Dressrosa is a really great arc (8/10) that gets to much unfair criticism. It has flaws for sure but the qualities of the arc completely overshadowed its problems. I think the fans start getting arc fatigue because how long the arc has but we need to remember that while this arc was 100 chapter long we experience like it was 120-130 chapters because this was the arc where Oda start taking consistent breaks.
Hoenstly, anime-Dressrosa was trash. Why? 1. Way, way too many fucking crowd reactions. Every time somthing happens, it gets narrated by one character, then all the bystanders around get a few panels worth of reactions. By the end of Dressrossa I was so infuriated that can't look back at that arc and say that I enjoyed it overall. 2. Rebecca, imho, is very annoying, uninteresting, and cries way too much. Crying is a very strong emotional reaction, but when overused, it gets insanely annoying very quickly. As much greatness there is to be found in this arc, as portrayed by the video, it was the one arc that pretty much made me quit OP overall for quite a while and come back near the end of the arc by only reading the manga and skipping through the last few episodes. It's great to talk about etc. in retrospect, but I will not forget how frustrating this arc was when it was fresh and new.
@@florencep2209 Just do yourself a favour and STOP watching the anime and just switch to the manga. I really understand every person who gets frustrated with the anime because of the horrible pacing, I did too and switched to the manga about 5 years ago because of that.
The speech Doffy had about him holding the reins keeping the monsters in check really set his importance in the One Piece world and possibly the only true warlord of the 7 warlords. Also his motives why he is so manipulative are well detailed His father took him from "heaven", without explaining why The regular citizens tried to kill him, without him knowing why
There are many understandable reasons why people don't like a lot of Dressrosa, but damn it if it isn't still impressive for the sheer amount of planning and ideas that went into it.
@@davidmedina3031 Right. Most people bring up a single reason why they did not like the arc and that is the pacing, which is totally fine when you read the arc without any breaks between chapters.
They mention pacing but never expand on why the pacing is bad, the only valid argument I've seen with pacing is that during the final battles the manga spent too much time on what happens to every single character.
Island Boy that’s because judging pacing is entirely based on personal preference. If something is long most people would find it slow since it takes forever to get from point A to point B. But if you are enjoying everything along the way it doesn’t feel slow. For me personally while I loved this arc I did have issues with pacing in the sense that there were a decent amount of uncesssry scenes. For example there were atleast 4 scenes that shows people running away when the Birdcage began to close in. You only needed 1 or 2 scenes for this and the others were redundant. Redundancy. That was the main issue of pacing in Dressrosa. There was a somewhat decent amount of repeated scenes like the example I gave. But most of Dressrosa was great. It needed to be that long tbh. But if the fat was trimmed a bit it would be better
@@crowseye4434 I do not see how 2 extra scenes have any impact on the pacing as a whole. It takes maybe 30 seconds to go past those scenes or even less if there is almost no dialogue to read.
Dressrosa was a pretty solid arc, people just wanna treat Oda like he is some robot. Slowing down the arc doesn't mean that he is not doing his best, it just means that this is the best that he could do in balancing the issues of the real world and the story. Oda is not in perfect health, so that would mean that he needs to keep his energy for the strong moments where it is required a great thought process and imagination. Imagine yourself writing this entire story, and having to do it while you are sick, AND put up with Shounen Jump's high standarts, AND deal with the complaints of the fans? Most of us would not be able to endure this. In fact, Oda is probably the only one who can achieve this somehow. And how does he do it? Well, breaks are one of the ways, but slowing down the arc a little is probably the other. This is like a fight to him. No one writes a manga without effort. Just as how Luffy never gets out clean out of his big fights. And don't think that Oda is not aware of what is happening, the man had in mind how One Piece will end since he first started the series 21 years ago, so why do you think that he is not aware of some small issues in pacing in a relatively medium long arc compared to what's to come in Wano and the final war at the end of the series. Yes, Oda being in bad health doesn't make the arc better but also does not validate the billion complaints every day of him.
I think Dressrosas biggest problem is that Oda blows all his imaginary stuff (Dressrosa introduction, the toys, greenbit, colloseum and the factory) in the first 5 volumes. The second part has 3 of its 5 volumes of just shuffeling characters around and alot of fighting with only a bland city backdrop. And those fights werent even that good. Its not the pacing. The second half is just not as creative as the first half. (Laws flashback is great though)
Fantastic once again. I'm planning on rereading Dressrosa (including Punk Hazard, as it should) and this analysis provided me with a newfound appreciation for this arc that I personally underappreciated, and having a new perspective on it will definitely make re-reading more enjoyable.
I reread Dressrosa last week and the first 5 volumes where alot of fun and I was asking myself why people dont like this arc. . . and then 4 volumes worth of birdcage happened. Take your time with rereading Dressrosa. Otherwise its second half will burn you out.
I just noticed something ... The SAD Factory in Punk Hazard and the SMILE factory in Dressrosa make up the word SAD SMILE. And thats what happens to the people like O-Toko, Killer and the Pleasures. They eat the SMILE fruits they don't gain powers and they end up with permanent SAD SMILES.
Don't get me wrong, I like other UA-camrs and their theorycrafting, but i enjoy how your speculation is usually not as outlandish, a bit more conservative, and really considers the themes Oda is trying to portray.
I really like the fact that your arc analyses don't seem to shove some opinion down my throat how I should feel about an arc or how i should rate it. After watching the video, I don't feel like you're telling me "Dressrosa is so underrated and you just don't like it because you can't see the bigger picture and you're opinion is trash". You just present a viewpoint on an arc that some people may not have gotten before. How I incorporate that viewpoint into my enjoyment/rating of the arc still feels up to myself, which is great. Often I feel like some people with their "This arc is good and you have to like it" videos are trying too hard to force people to like it, even if they have valid points. Regarding the video: Fantastic job, as always. (btw I have been binge watching all your videos last week and wanted to thank you for your great effort and keeping me entertained while the manga is on break :)) Doflamingo has been one if not my favourite character in the series since his introduction and a lot of that has to do with the points you mention in this analysis. I just always felt like he was the only person in the One Piece universe who understood how the world works. Like you mentioned, he seemed like the person in the shadows pulling the strings which lead the main story. This comes back in Dressrosa which shows us that basically his entire life was a replica of the major themes Oda has been going with his story/his main villain the world government. Compared to almost all other characters and villains, he always felt and certainly is just so much more multidimensional, which made me love him from the get go. Still, Dressrosa surely has its major flaws and I'm sure you also have your negative opinions on the arc. It had absolutely phenomenal highs, but pretty critical lows in my opinion, which is just a shame since it always made me unsure if I should like the arc or not lol. But nobody can deny that its importance for the overall story is crucial, which of course doesn't guarantee a great enjoyment while reading an arc, especially weekly. Now since this analysis didn't seem very opinion driven and more on the analytical side, I couldn't really tell how much you actually liked the arc overall. Which made me realize that I would love some kind of arc ranking by you. You seem to appreciate the One Piece arcs on more layers than just the basic "how cool is the villain, how sad is the backstory" level. I know rankings aren't your content at all but I'm really interested in your opinion on certain arcs and what makes you like/dislike them. Of course it doesn't have to be a video, I'm totally up for reading an essay or something like that :) I hope I didn't overwhelm you with my long ass comment, but I just wanted to write down some things that went through my head after watching the video and I just love talking about One Piece. Don't overwork yourself with your business and UA-cam and take all the time you need for your videos. It's absolutely worth it and I will gladly wait half a year or more for one of your spicy analyses :]
@@sasakihaise5739 Yes, this applies to those negative kind of "analysis" videos/threads/essays whatever as well. I'm generally a bigger fan of objective analyses rather than opinion driven hate/love content.
there should never be negative analysis though, i read recently from Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Magnolia and Boogie Nights. Never say something is bad, just say it isnt for you. If you say something is bad, no one will take the risks they take to tell you stories you might want to see in the future. Ps. most of those negative analysis videos are just clickbait. Like everything wrong with...Movies. Hate those, stop putting things down because you feel superior afterwards.
@@july8studio I agree. I feel like most of the negative opinions are just people being edgy. They don't want to fit in the majority so they dislike what the majority likes, because they want to be "different". And by this difference, they deem their selves as superiors cos they "see" what most "failed to see". Or literally saying that others are "sucking 's ass" just bcos they don't give negative opinions. Then they complain that people are "denying" and "ignoring" their opinions? I mean, they're basically doing the same to positive ones.
Oh shit you changed your profile pic seriously this channel has been starting to look way more professional lately and I find Dressrosa to be the most interesting arc in one piece so I'm kinda hyped for this video EDIT: really nice video but you didn't bring up one of the biggest themes in the arc that is to say the theme of "memory" which I found really interesting on a reread and would fit neatly into the point you were trying to make with this video like comparing how the world government and Dressrosa deal with making people forget about the past
I know no one who can see through one piece's story better than mr. morj This makes me really appreciate the series even more. Oda is really pure genius encapsulating all these ideas.
Dude, you are the first youtube channel that I've actually gone and binged. Your material is incredible, and you really understand this series in a very core way. Kudos.
13:46 The parallel between Doffy and Im-sama I SEE IT NOW. What a genius move of Oda, foreshadowing us the end of One Piece by the exposure of Imu-sama's regime only to be beaten by Luffy. I think/hope there's an actual deep connection between Doflamingo and Imu

Thank you Mr Morj, here's to a great 2019 and more One Piece to come!
Morj is an absolute genius when it comes to analyzing One Piece. He really deserves all the praise and glory he gets from the work he puts into his videos. Also. There's only one way how he would know everything...he's actually Im-Sama. It all makes sense.
On a different I watch someone once commented that Sunflowers help with air cleaning of polluted air and can grow in places of radiation in the soil/ground...which after I remember when you showed the Sunflower fields Dressrosa had...beautiful flowers which are more connected to the Sun or light but can grow in tainted/poison soil really shows what Dressrosa was on the outside and inside under Doffy's Rule...
Thanks so much for posting. I only recently found your channel but love how indepth your analysis are. I really didn't realize how close the events of dressrosa so closely parallel the main story of one piece with respect to the WG and the celestial dragons. Keep up the great work!
Great analysis! Btw I want to add some thought on the theme of Dressrosa, the Corrida collesieum purpose and its meaning. There's a contrast between Corrida collesieum in Riku's and Doflamingo's regime. In the first, CC was not simply an arena for sadistic entertaiment, because the kingdom and its citizen are peaceful, weak military (unlike Wano), and not glorifying conquest or barbarism (in fact they condemn Kyros's crime). But this is how CC become important part to shows how king Riku's regime and Dressrosa as land of passion and love, through Kyros back story we saw what is mean to be accepted, to be worth accepted, redeemed, and achieving status of hero. King Riku praise Kyros' barbarism as talent, and with CC as 'purgatory' he become the hero he deserve. In contrast, during Doflamingo's regime, the CC purpose are transformed into another visibility of false hope, it became 'inferno' instead purgatory. It is inferno for Rebecca and Riku, as if they're a sinner. Its also an inferno for those who lose, thrown into the deep of oblivion and 'reincarnated' as slave-toy. Beside of this metaphor, CC as a place of false hope are correspondence to Doflamingo's rule of who is the champion, that is those who obey his command and rule, not those who dare to fight for their own right (as we seen on Rebecca). I thinks this CC also gives us another visibility of Doflamingo's godhood, he decide fate, hope, and live.

Also his motives why he is so manipulative are well detailed
His father took him from "heaven", without explaining why
The regular citizens tried to kill him, without him knowing why
I didn't think you'd make analysis videos about old arcs. What a pleasant surprise!
Your vision of Oda's work is God class. You see what he is trying to say and portray better than a lot of people doing this. Great work
There are many understandable reasons why people don't like a lot of Dressrosa, but damn it if it isn't still impressive for the sheer amount of planning and ideas that went into it.
There aren't many reasons, the only one for me was reading the arc week by week.
Finally a video from Mr.Morj
OMFG YES! THIS IS LIKE MY CRACK FIX
Lol righttt
Another masterpiece, as usual. 👌
This is Morj's best video to date
I just noticed something ... The SAD Factory in Punk Hazard and the SMILE factory in Dressrosa make up the word SAD SMILE. And thats what happens to the people like O-Toko, Killer and the Pleasures. They eat the SMILE fruits they don't gain powers and they end up with permanent SAD SMILES.
Don't get me wrong, I like other UA-camrs and their theorycrafting, but i enjoy how your speculation is usually not as outlandish, a bit more conservative, and really considers the themes Oda is trying to portray.
I just wanna say that I found your channel recently, I'm binging your videos. I love them. Thank you.
you showed me a perspective on arc that I've never seen before!
Damm man another fantastic video
Best one piece analysis channel! I love this channel
(btw I have been binge watching all your videos last week and wanted to thank you for your great effort and keeping me entertained while the manga is on break :))
Doflamingo has been one if not my favourite character in the series since his introduction and a lot of that has to do with the points you mention in this analysis.
Of course it doesn't have to be a video, I'm totally up for reading an essay or something like that :)
I hope I didn't overwhelm you with my long ass comment, but I just wanted to write down some things that went through my head after watching the video and I just love talking about One Piece. Don't overwork yourself with your business and UA-cam and take all the time you need for your videos. It's absolutely worth it and I will gladly wait half a year or more for one of your spicy analyses :]
About first paragraph you could say the same thing when someone says "wci is trash" or Dressrosa is trash" or other nonsense like that
@@sasakihaise5739 Yes, this applies to those negative kind of "analysis" videos/threads/essays whatever as well. I'm generally a bigger fan of objective analyses rather than opinion driven hate/love content.
Great comment.
there should never be negative analysis though, i read recently from Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Magnolia and Boogie Nights.
Oh shit you changed your profile pic seriously this channel has been starting to look way more professional lately and I find Dressrosa to be the most interesting arc in one piece so I'm kinda hyped for this video
EDIT: really nice video but you didn't bring up one of the biggest themes in the arc that is to say the theme of "memory" which I found really interesting on a reread and would fit neatly into the point you were trying to make with this video like comparing how the world government and Dressrosa deal with making people forget about the past
Haven't even watched it yet but I liked the vid cos I know it will be good
I know no one who can see through one piece's story better than mr. morj
This makes me really appreciate the series even more. Oda is really pure genius encapsulating all these ideas.
Now i want a Marineford and Ennies Lobby arcs analysis.
2 years after. he has done both
@@theflashgordon193 The thematical video about Marineford is not yet out
@@justaway6901 After he met his sales goal he's now bringing the full analysis of marineford which is apparently gonna be almost an hour long.
Incredible analysis, I can appreciate Dressora way more than before now. You're one of the best One Piece analysis on UA-cam
Dude, you are the first youtube channel that I've actually gone and binged. Your material is incredible, and you really understand this series in a very core way. Kudos.
Best OP channel hands down.
I was thinking a few days ago about a MrMorj dressrossa vid and how necessary it is. Thank you again for enlightening the community.
Mr.Morj is my favorite one piece UA-camr to underrated . I wish I could see him , best guy, and craft dwarf in a stream all together .
My boy always with the big picture! Loved the vid dude
Dude these videos are OUTSTANDING!! HOLY SHIT MAN! The amount of love, craft, and story you weave and create with these video discussions are on point! BRAVO!
We need more analysts in the community. Mr Morj and Craftsdwarf are the only two of the ones i follow regularly but most of other youtubers are reviewers or wannabe critics. I sometimes watch tekking coz his videos are entertaining and informative. Grandline reviewer, Kol and grandlive chronicles are worth checking out too.
Mr Moji, the man who will one day rule the One Piece Community!
All this greatness and just 14k subs.
Saying that for all hell to break loose, the one controlling the strings should be the first one to go made me shiver. Your analysis is criminally good.
Yess I’m glad your back!!!! Keep up the great work
masterpiece again
………yeah. This guy has his head on straight. The level of analysis Mr. Morj provides on his videos is something I have not seen before. Like, frick.
Yet another brilliant video. Thank you!
I love it, Love the work you do, I will always point to your videos if someone asks me about OP, smooth flow voice work and great simple presentation of ideas, I cannot wait to see what Oda will give us in the future but I hope you will be there with us, explain, linking plots and reminding us what has come and what is still to come!
Your my go to One Piece guy. Thank you, the work you do is AMAZING
Your analysis of Doflamingo was one of the greatest one piece analysis‘ on UA-cam. Love your channel
I thinks this CC also gives us another visibility of Doflamingo's godhood, he decide fate, hope, and live.

this video aged really well
I'm watching this instead of writing an essay that I was supposed to do two weeks ago. Why are my priorities like this lmao.
Wow even though I had my problems with the arc I knew it was a very important one for one piece. It showed off all the players in the world and how they affect each other but this vid made me appreciate it so much more. Great work
One of the many appealing aspects in your videos is the music you put in. I simply love it.
Keep up your good work!
Your contact is fantastic. I didn’t really like Dressrosa but this is the first video about it that has me genuinely looking at it in a different way.
