I got a couple of Maverick 88s a year old so ago on sale at Fleet Farm for $160 each I think. The 5+1 model. Didn't really need them but got all excited after the TFB TV burndown video. I also have a Mossberg 500 which is definitely smoother but essentially identical.

I bought the same h&r 20 gauge to take my hunter's safety course, I think it was actually required in NY at the time, when I was 13. Paid 79 bucks for it. Still got it 33 years later, still works. Great video as always 👍
The first shotgun I ever bought was a used Winchester Defender at 18 for $150. I named it Roy, and that bad boy would eat anything I put in it and carried 8 rounds. Who knows how many shells I put through it. After a while the forearm nut wouldn't thread at all and Loc-Tite was useless. I sold it to a gunsmith who knew how to fix it because I didn't have the cash at the time in my late 20's. I'm 51 now and I wish I never sold it.
Around 12-13 years ago there was a phenomenon where 20 gauge shotguns where spiking in sales and it was because young people where getting them for their first home defense and older people where getting them for their last home defense shotgun.
I got a Taurus G2C for Christmas based on your review. I really like it. I'm actually wearing it as I type this. I took it out today and fired some Hornady Critical Defense through it. This gun has fed everything I've put through it with no failures of any kind. I put 50 rounds of aluminum cased ammo through it today along with the Hornady. I got this gun on sale in Texas for $250 and it came with 4 magazines. It also came with a coupon for a holster and a laser. I'm really liking it. It's so easy to carry. The Mossberg Maverick 88 is a very reliable gun. My son and his three friends all have one. When they were wanting to dove hunt they did not have anything. They each bought one, we did some training, shot some clays, and in short order they were prepared, AFTER I forced them to go get a game license. Yes, the game warden might show up and the fines are STEEP. They have had these guns for about 10 years now and every year they hunt. Sometimes I will take my slinger machine and we have some clay contests between us all. I have an old I got decades ago in a pawn store. It was a refurbishment project. It works like a champ.
I can't imagine anyone risking hunting without a license. Fines are steep, but there could also be jail time on it. Besides, the license fees usually go to a worthwhile purpose like land conservation, which is a anomaly for our government today.

I found my 88 at a local big sports store...for $190. Just over a year later they are now $225 at the same store. Stock up on the bird shot and 00 buck and slug..NOW..
I think it all comes down to perception of training. I grew up shooting a ruger single-6 .22 as my first pistol at around age 7. I guess because of my age, I decided to start engaging targets that FAR exceeded the expectations of the PISTOL because my imagination didn't care. At first my dad stopped me, but was surprised when I could regularly hit 65+ yard targets. I never understood guys that train 6-8 yards from their torso targets... I feel like a blind man could 2 head 1 chest a torso at 6 yards with their offhand.
Yeah I use to practice at 75yards on clay pigeons with a 38 special undercover lite 2inch barrel and could get them but I can't shoot a semi auto handgun like that 😂🤣
@jong2359 the reasoning behind training at that distance is that it's the distance that the vast majority of self defense shootings take place. Also, new shooters trying to improve don't learn as much since they can't always judge how/why they missed from longer ranges.
You recommended the G2C a long time ago and I bought one. It's been very reliable, accurate, easy to clean and feels extremely good in hand. My son has a Hellcat and I've shot that and wasn't impressed. In fact,.. he couldn't deny how good my G2C is and felt, $200 or not. Good pistol. So,.. to date,.. Chris has recommended two guns (one rifle) I've bought and love them both for the same reasons. *Thanks Chris!! You've never steered me wrong.*

A few years ago my wife wanted a shotgun. I bought her a Maverick 88. It’s HER gun but I’ve taken it out many times to the range and I love it. Mossberg/Mav 88 is what I always recommend.
To the .40 Glock trade-ins. A little shopping around online and you can find 50 rd boxes of Federal HSTs for 25 bucks a box (+tax and ship, of course). So for about 350 after transfer fees, you can have a great gun and a couple boxes of the best off the shelf defense ammo money can buy. .40 might not be in vogue, but it has dropped MANY a bad guy.
**the 40s have been doing for decades what they can now claim that the 9 mm with advanced bullet technology can do. **Just remember that isn't the first time they've claimed the 9 mm was the be-all and end all cartridge. **And once you run out of your premium defense loads the 40 truncated cone bullet will do more damage than a 9 mm ball round. **In fact Massad Ayoob likened the performance of the 40 TC fmj to almost equivalent to the 45 ACP ball round. **And you can buy a conversion barrel for the Glock and new 9mm magazines and you can run 9mm too.
@@walterzoomie the beautiful thing about CZs, at least 75-patterned CZs, is 40 and 9mm mags are the same. A CZP06 mag and a CZP01/Compact 9mm mag are the exact same thing. A 15 round 9mm mag is just an 11 round .40 mag. Makes for super easy compatibility.
It is really reliable when you got a working one It’s like a Glock clone but 200$ however once you test it and know you don’t have a lemon you are good put some time in on it and see if it works for you I love mine only had to loctite on my front sight post at 500 rounds and been good since

3,500-4000ish rounds and mine is going strong. It's been pretty banged around too. I kept it on me as a backup service weapon, even, because I had a fantastic department to work for.
Another great video! Maverick 88 is my go to for shotguns. Have had mine for close to 10 years, has never failed me. Also, I carried the Taurus for a couple of years as my daily. Back then it was PT111 G2, well over 1000 rounds through it, with no issues.
I must give a big thanks for your real life review. I was both surprised and impressed to find someone who both espouses and recommends the 20 guage. Ive shot 20's all my life and as you pointed out in the video, in practical terms theres very little difference between the 20 and the 12. Definitely will keep coming back for research into my future purchases and education as well. Keep doing Gods work my good sir!!

One of my favorite firearms to this day is my lil New England 20 gauge single shot I picked up at an auction NIB for $20 years ago.. I haven’t shot a mountain of shells through it, but it’s had enough use to get a good technique of reloading it. It’s downed a lot of dove and pheasant, and it’s stupid light and easy to pack.. A lot of firearms have came and went, but that lil shotgun will always have a spot.
Great video. Well thought out. Honest opinion's without making someone who can only afford $200 feel bad about it. I have all types of guns, and really respect the Maverick 88 and the G3C. For the price of a Glock you have home defense and CCW need's taken care of.
I worked in a gun store for 10 years and sold hundreds of Taurus G2c and never had any complaints. Also the SCCY. The only thing about the SCCY is they are snappy. Iraqveteran 8888 did a glock test on the SCCY and it passed. Way better than the Hi Points. Great video as always thanks!
The DAO trigger of the SCCY is terrible. Esp for a newer shooter. To have to stage the trigger at damn near 8lbs. Then try to align the sights before it falls is awful. Mined you I have a g2s and that's not a great trigger either yet still leaps ahead of the SCCY. Maybe the vp9 has blurred my perception😂
I have seen SCCYs fail drop tests, though. Don't know the model, but it was a little subcompact 9mm my friend had. He set it on a shooting bench, recoil of the long guns knocked it off, it went off when it hit the ground. He summarily unloaded it, and we then used it as a target.
My brother in law bought a sccy and the trigger broke after 10 shots. A guy I work with also has one and he says its only reliable with wolf steel case 9mm.
Just saw a Mossberg 88 used & new at my local gun shop in North Alabama. $158 used & $215 brand new. Regularly see the Taurus G3 on sale,but Ive never seen them lower $260 anywhere New and haven't seen any used ones. The G3 not on sale runs $ 285 new.
I had to pay like $330 for my G3c but this was still during the pandemic days and supply shortages allowed gun stores to get away with higher -- though not ridiculously so -- prices. Whatever .. when you got it you got it. Can last a lifetime.

@@rpwbass I've got the Ruger EC9s in recent months and it's largely replaced the G3c as my EDC. Just so much lighter and can easily be carried in a jean pocket.
a couple shotguns not mentioned but i can highly reccomend the Stevens 320 (usually 180$) and the G-Force GF2P (usually 170$) and the Rock Island Armory M5 (usually 200$) usually don’t trust imported shotguns but i’ve put many rounds through these (mostly the RIA) and they’ve been dead stop reliable there’s also tons of videos online of them working reliably
Them Steven's 320s are clones of the Winchester SXP. If your able to swing one a basic SXP Defender runs in the upper 200s to low 300s. I have the Trench variant that went in the upper 300s. Only reason I bring that up is the fit n finish on the SXP line is better overall then the Steven's are. And to be fair to the Steven's, a 320 did pass TFB-TVs shotgun burn down and it surprised James 😅
More like the poorest of the poors set up. Why does everyone assume that bad guys are going to be unarmed. 9 times out of 10 you would be done against an armed assailant
This video is a huge public service. The advice is extremely sound. My additions would be to show how to take the deer plug out of the shotgun because most people have no idea that it could be in there. And on the taurus, second strike capability is actually a big plus. Sometimes cheap ammo is Milsurp European machine gun ammo and has hard primers.
If you’re gonna go with a .22LR handgun, what about the Keltec P17? It’s semi-auto, 16+1 capacity, and for $200 you get the pistol plus three magazines included. It seems like a much better option than the revolver.
My local Walmart pretty much has the Maverick 88 (12 gauge, 20 gauge, & 20 gauge youth) in stock most of the time for $197 for over 2 years now. Mossberg 500 has been around for 63 years, and the Maverick 88 has been around for 36 years. Pretty impressive run for both if you ask me!
The first handgun I bought was a hi-point C-9 25 years ago. I got it for 75 bucks and never had an issue with it but it was during the magazine ban when you couldn't legally carry. Today I would recommend saving for a canik.

Maverick 88 for home defense & hunting, Heritage Rough Rider with both cylinders for small critters, Ruger LCP for your pocket rocket, a MilSurp if you can even find one, and I'd even say a Taurus Judge if you get lucky like I did.
I have a Mav 88 security model, 7 shot i believe. Fantastic gun. I bought mine for about $220 only about a year ago, brand new. I did add an adjustable stock to it just because i could and it just makes it more comfortable for different people to shoot but even out of the box it’s going to work every time.
Nice to see Taurus in the mix, I have shot over 500 rounds w/ zero issues. I also picked up 2-17rd mags from Lakeline, very happy with the performance of my G2C w 17rd mag. Great video!

Very good information don't always need expensive things to get the job done I love my Benelli but I use less expensive firearms my first rifle was a savage 243 paid $200 got my fist deer still have the rifle 31 years later.keep up the good work
Honest Outlaw, I'm with you on this great video! I grew up on single-shot shotguns...got my first duck, pheasant, and turkey with them; they are far from obsolete. And I concur with your plug for the Heritage Rough Rider pistols; I had a $38 credit at my local FFL, so I picked up the basic Rough Rider (RR22B4) with the 4-3/4" barrel and rosewood grips for the whopping sum of $114 out the door (in middle Georgia). At that price, I couldn't afford not to buy it, LOL! I tested it at 16 feet in my garage (freezing, windy, and dark outside) with CCI Quiet rounds and it was dead on...perfect for pesting. Later on, I tried it with hollow points on my 7-yard range, and they were spot on, too. For just over a hundred bucks, it makes for a perfect truck gun, a spare gun for...whatever. Great video; keep up the good work! :)
Maverick 88 is such a great gun. Took it to the range shot some clays and it worked flawlessly kick wasn't even bad felt just right. Recommend security model with 7+1 tube and if you want later change the stock to a foldable
When my wife and I got our first house, we didn’t have a whole lot of extra cash for anything. We did, however, save up for a couple months and picked up a Mav 88 with extended mag, and a Taurus PT111 G2. The Taurus cost us $150 (used) and the Mav 88 was $175. We still have both, but have graduated to more expensive more optioned out firearms. It’s funny, we still take the originals out once every year or two just for fun. When friends or family want our advice on firearms, it usually comes down to a pump shotgun and an inexpensive semi-auto (usually a PSA Dagger or G3C).

Mrs. Outlaw looks like she could take on an army with that 20 gauge. Yes, I highly recommend the Maverick 88 as well. Clean and lube it, and practice practice practice. Mine came from the factory really stiff. It's broken in now.
Hi HO I bought my G3C based on several reviews and the price. Frankly being a new gun owner most of the problems I’ve had were with me. I’ve had very few jams or double feeds with the G3C - like under 3 in about 120 rounds. I can’t say the same for my PT145. It’s very picky with ammo and absolutely won’t handle hollow points. It’s just not reliable enough to be concealed carry even though it’s small. Your video on gripping the gun correctly improved my accuracy dramatically. Good work.
Ruger costs barely any extra and you're getting half an order of magnitude greater reliability. Also you're supporting a fully American company and not a Brazilian one.
@@benn454 I won't knock on you because you ARE correct about the videos theme. At the same time if people just save up an extra three or four hours of their McDonalds paychecks they could get a Ruger EC9s. Mine was $240. Has had no feeding issues whatsoever unlike my Taurus.
@@hamishcarter8982Idk man, I have a Ruger LCP + LCP Max, and my family have multiple Taurus G2s or G3s. I've had issues with feeding on both LCPs, and weak mag release springs on the LCP Max. Also rusting issues on the slide. Never any issues on any of the Tauruses. Ruger's been milking its reputation for too long. If I wanted a non-pocket pistol, I'd go with Taurus over Ruger at this point.

As a European it's interesting to see this list. Due to import restrictions you guys seem to have quite a small selection of cheap stuff. Dispute sanctions Baikal shotguns are still quite big here. Baikal along with Norinco both make fairly good cheap copies of anything you could possibly want, from shotguns, AKs, hand guns etc. With a brand new single shot 12 gauge going for 150 dollars and a used one for 50 dollars if that (and that's mostly tax). Also the cheap hand guns here are typically made by Springfield, norinco or Tanfoglio, although the EU hand gun market is weird as most countries limit the number of hand guns that can be owned, so glocks, HK and Sig, high end revolvers and olympic 22lr stuff is more expensive than you guys but anything old or not 9mm or higher caliber is dirt cheap. You can literally pick up a perfect Walther PPK for 100 dollars no problem (if you live in a country that gives you space on your licence). Derringers, FN High powers, pocket pistols, ex 1980s police and military service pistols are all well under 200 dollars.
Police trade ins are so slept on. I got a police trade in Glock 22 and it still runs perfectly. Think about it, most officers will never get into a shooting, and the most officers retire after about 20 years on the high end and are only required to do a 40 round course once a year at most agencies. 40x20= 800 rounds put through it over 20 years.
Police trade in or civilian used, I don't think you'll find a Glock, Sig, or M&P at or under $200 unless it's hot and someone wants to get rid of it. Edit: M&P full size
@@blakenoble4014 got a police trade in. It was perfect circumstances. My dad is a deputy and he has a buddy who is a retired deputy who owns a gun shop locally. So he gave me a hefty family discount since he’s known me and my family forever walked out $315 taxes and background including. So I guess technically before taxes and background I was in the $280ish range which while not under $200, is a hell of a deal. 4 mags too.
Before I got out of law enforcement, the Taurus Gs were filling up our gun vault in our evidence locker. Cheap and effective. I'd cavoite on the SAA .22s like the heritage and say find a sale with the dual cylinders so you have the option of .22LR or .22WMR. They still go for under $200 and gives you options and a little more bang for your buck. Had a lot of the heritage rough riders in the evidence locker as well. Both are effective. Also on the LE trade-ins look around and try to find the dealer they trade to. Many will buy the whole lot of a departments guns and sell them for the same price. Most departments will have extra guns to replace if something happens and these guns will have very little wear and tear, but will be listed at the same price. If you keep an eye on these dealers and get in fast you can grab a barely sometime never used gun. Sometimes you can find black powder SAAs with conversion cylinders in pawn shops for under $200 because they are not common and they don't know a lot about them, its still a SAA but steps up to a .357/.38 or .45LC. most you have to remove the cylinder to reload but after 5-6 rds of cowboy lead.
This is spot on, the 88 is literally the benchmark for utility and reliability any shotgun should try to make. The Taurus pistols are great and as far as the single action 22’s I’ll bet any car jacker you poke a hole in with one will charge their mind.
I recently bought a Ruger LCP for 180. Brand new from Palmetto State Armory.I love how easily concealable it is. Just carry it in your jeans pocket. Came with a pocket holster, but only one magazine.
I've mentioned it in a previous video, but the Diamondback Sidekick should be mentioned alongside the .22 revolvers. Brand new it's out of the price range, but it's close enough that if found on sale or used it should be at or under $200.
Heritage revolver in .22 mag is insanely accurate. Its a shame there's no good loadings though But the mav 88 is absolutely the correct answer for cheap home defense

I’d like to add, if you have 200$ and save another 50-100 then you can get a PSA dagger Glock clone damn good gun full of features that I trust my life on. Save even a little more and get a micro dagger.
@@jamesbuchanan3145 I have the real Glock too, but after about 3000 rounds of various quality through the dagger it’s at the point where it’s in my carry rotation. It’s a damn good gun for the price and costs about 1/2 what a Glock would. It’s better to have a dagger today then wait months to save up for a Glock.

The Maverick 88 is probably the best gun for the money, period. I bought mine for $230.00 and then replaced the stock with a Magpul stock, and bought an M-Carbo trigger kit. The gun is near flawless and still cheaper than a M500.
I would get a Hi Point JXP 10mm....got one just to try out 10mm it is fantastic and very accurate..put many many rounds through it including SIG JHPs 0 issues none!!....really like it !!
@@bendabutcha yep. Personally, I'll buy 10 dagger compacts over any Taurus. That's just my bias, but to be fair the Dagger is a fuckin sweet shooter. Just put another 300 rounds on mine today. Nearly at 6k overall without a single issue that I didn't cause (I reload).
Taurus has a horrible track record that they are overcoming recently. I have a Taurus tx22 and a .357 tracker. I love them, but I'll pick something else to defend my life with based on their track record. That could change, but it would take years/decades
The Taurus G2C is the #1 best-seller at the gun store I manage. Here in NC, they run about $299 new...and $300 is the typical limit people put on themselves to buy a gun. That being said, times are tough and sales have plummeted. Thank goodness for decent, budget-friendly guns

I bought a used M&P shield 9mm a few years ago for $250 that had hardly been shot. Came with both mags. I have done nothing to it except shoot it quite a lot and clean it now and again. Still my edc to this day and I honestly don't have much of a desire to change that.
No reason to want anything else unless you can afford another , great guns I suggest that gun to all my new gun owner friends and 90% try it and buy it
@melroberts8877 yeah, I've thought about upgrading to the shield plus, and at some point I probably will, mainly cause I would like to be able to accommodate a weapon light, but my first gen shield works great and ai can shoot it very well so I'm not in a rush.
I have a Pardner pump, bought it a few years ago, new, for about $199. Works just fine. I have a G3, full sized. It runs just as well as my M&Ps and Glock 43. My first shotgun was a HR Pardner single shot 12 gauge. It was tough, but a limbsaver and practice, it's effective.
I agree with the 20 gauge, I have a Savage and and H&R single shots. Simple to use and very reliable. When you are poor, you can make it work and work very well.
I have more expensive firearms and still my 20 gauge NEF single shot is what I grab to small game hunt a lot, especially if going to do a bunch of walking. Not what I grab for home defense, but I’d be happy to have it if it’s all I had. Just build a technique that works for you that keeps it fed and will be in pretty good shape.
Stoeger STR-9C is a great gun that you can get under $200. You can also get a PSA Dagger for around $230 if you wait for sales and buy the slide and frame separate. Great video though! Always love your recommendations, very knowledgeable
Good video. Nothing wrong with the Maverick...I've shot many and have never been disappointed. I would not be afraid to use for home defense. That being said, I have a Remington 870 that I bought over 20 years ago, as it is a bit better than the Maverick and there were more barrel options available to me as I also use it for hunting birds and also for protection in the field (think heavy slugs for grizzly).

I bought the same h&r 20 gauge to take my hunter's safety course, I think it was actually required in NY at the time, when I was 13. Paid 79 bucks for it. Still got it 33 years later, still works. Great video as always 👍
The first shotgun I ever bought was a used Winchester Defender at 18 for $150. I named it Roy, and that bad boy would eat anything I put in it and carried 8 rounds. Who knows how many shells I put through it. After a while the forearm nut wouldn't thread at all and Loc-Tite was useless. I sold it to a gunsmith who knew how to fix it because I didn't have the cash at the time in my late 20's. I'm 51 now and I wish I never sold it.

Around 12-13 years ago there was a phenomenon where 20 gauge shotguns where spiking in sales and it was because young people where getting them for their first home defense and older people where getting them for their last home defense shotgun.
I got a Taurus G2C for Christmas based on your review. I really like it. I'm actually wearing it as I type this. I took it out today and fired some Hornady Critical Defense through it. This gun has fed everything I've put through it with no failures of any kind. I put 50 rounds of aluminum cased ammo through it today along with the Hornady. I got this gun on sale in Texas for $250 and it came with 4 magazines. It also came with a coupon for a holster and a laser. I'm really liking it. It's so easy to carry. The Mossberg Maverick 88 is a very reliable gun. My son and his three friends all have one. When they were wanting to dove hunt they did not have anything. They each bought one, we did some training, shot some clays, and in short order they were prepared, AFTER I forced them to go get a game license. Yes, the game warden might show up and the fines are STEEP. They have had these guns for about 10 years now and every year they hunt. Sometimes I will take my slinger machine and we have some clay contests between us all. I have an old I got decades ago in a pawn store. It was a refurbishment project. It works like a champ.
I can't imagine anyone risking hunting without a license. Fines are steep, but there could also be jail time on it. Besides, the license fees usually go to a worthwhile purpose like land conservation, which is a anomaly for our government today.

I think it all comes down to perception of training. I grew up shooting a ruger single-6 .22 as my first pistol at around age 7. I guess because of my age, I decided to start engaging targets that FAR exceeded the expectations of the PISTOL because my imagination didn't care. At first my dad stopped me, but was surprised when I could regularly hit 65+ yard targets. I never understood guys that train 6-8 yards from their torso targets... I feel like a blind man could 2 head 1 chest a torso at 6 yards with their offhand.
Yeah I use to practice at 75yards on clay pigeons with a 38 special undercover lite 2inch barrel and could get them but I can't shoot a semi auto handgun like that 😂🤣
@jong2359 the reasoning behind training at that distance is that it's the distance that the vast majority of self defense shootings take place. Also, new shooters trying to improve don't learn as much since they can't always judge how/why they missed from longer ranges.
You recommended the G2C a long time ago and I bought one. It's been very reliable, accurate, easy to clean and feels extremely good in hand. My son has a Hellcat and I've shot that and wasn't impressed. In fact,.. he couldn't deny how good my G2C is and felt, $200 or not. Good pistol.
So,.. to date,.. Chris has recommended two guns (one rifle) I've bought and love them both for the same reasons.

A few years ago my wife wanted a shotgun. I bought her a Maverick 88. It’s HER gun but I’ve taken it out many times to the range and I love it. Mossberg/Mav 88 is what I always recommend.

To the .40 Glock trade-ins. A little shopping around online and you can find 50 rd boxes of Federal HSTs for 25 bucks a box (+tax and ship, of course). So for about 350 after transfer fees, you can have a great gun and a couple boxes of the best off the shelf defense ammo money can buy. .40 might not be in vogue, but it has dropped MANY a bad guy.
**the 40s have been doing for decades what they can now claim that the 9 mm with advanced bullet technology can do.
**Just remember that isn't the first time they've claimed the 9 mm was the be-all and end all cartridge.
**And once you run out of your premium defense loads the 40 truncated cone bullet will do more damage than a 9 mm ball round.
**In fact Massad Ayoob likened the performance of the 40 TC fmj to almost equivalent to the 45 ACP ball round.
**And you can buy a conversion barrel for the Glock and new 9mm magazines and you can run 9mm too.

@@walterzoomie the beautiful thing about CZs, at least 75-patterned CZs, is 40 and 9mm mags are the same. A CZP06 mag and a CZP01/Compact 9mm mag are the exact same thing. A 15 round 9mm mag is just an 11 round .40 mag. Makes for super easy compatibility.

3,500-4000ish rounds and mine is going strong. It's been pretty banged around too. I kept it on me as a backup service weapon, even, because I had a fantastic department to work for.
Got a maverick 88 with an 18.5 and a 28 inch barrel for under 250 brand new a couple months ago. Great inexpensive pump gun.
Another great video! Maverick 88 is my go to for shotguns. Have had mine for close to 10 years, has never failed me. Also, I carried the Taurus for a couple of years as my daily. Back then it was PT111 G2, well over 1000 rounds through it, with no issues.
That G2 would also run Sig P226 magazines.

I must give a big thanks for your real life review. I was both surprised and impressed to find someone who both espouses and recommends the 20 guage. Ive shot 20's all my life and as you pointed out in the video, in practical terms theres very little difference between the 20 and the 12. One of my favorite firearms to this day is my lil New England 20 gauge single shot I picked up at an auction NIB for $20 years ago.. I haven’t shot a mountain of shells through it, but it’s had enough use to get a good technique of reloading it. It’s downed a lot of dove and pheasant, and it’s stupid light and easy to pack.. A lot of firearms have came and went, but that lil shotgun will always have a spot.

I worked in a gun store for 10 years and sold hundreds of Taurus G2c and never had any complaints. Also the SCCY. The only thing about the SCCY is they are snappy. Iraqveteran 8888 did a glock test on the SCCY and it passed. Way better than the Hi Points. Great video as always thanks!
The DAO trigger of the SCCY is terrible.
Esp for a newer shooter. To have to stage the trigger at damn near 8lbs. Then try to align the sights before it falls is awful. Mined you I have a g2s and that's not a great trigger either yet still leaps ahead of the SCCY.
Maybe the vp9 has blurred my perception😂
The only real drawback of Taurus is the finish, and the g2 series/tx22 has some awful, fragile, won't stay zeroed rear sights.
I have seen SCCYs fail drop tests, though. Don't know the model, but it was a little subcompact 9mm my friend had. He set it on a shooting bench, recoil of the long guns knocked it off, it went off when it hit the ground. He summarily unloaded it, and we then used it as a target.
I've had a SCCY CPX2 for 10 years. It is such a POS my conscience won't allow me to sell it. Not even to my mother-in-law.
My brother in law bought a sccy and the trigger broke after 10 shots. A guy I work with also has one and he says its only reliable with wolf steel case 9mm.
I agree with your assessment if 20 gauge shotguns. My primary home defense firearm is a 20 gauge Mossberg Shockwave.

Just saw a Mossberg 88 used & new at my local gun shop in North Alabama. $158 used & $215 brand new. Regularly see the Taurus G3 on sale,but Ive never seen them lower $260 anywhere New and haven't seen any used ones. The G3 not on sale runs $ 285 new.
The G2c and G3c are below $200 new after rebate often for the holidays at the end of the year.
Check Grabagun and buds gun shop or gunbroker for a better g3 or g3c or gx4 price. Ik they aren't local but usually they have great prices
I had to pay like $330 for my G3c but this was still during the pandemic days and supply shortages allowed gun stores to get away with higher -- though not ridiculously so -- prices. Whatever .. when you got it you got it. Can last a lifetime.

@@rpwbass I've got the Ruger EC9s in recent months and it's largely replaced the G3c as my EDC. Just so much lighter and can easily be carried in a jean pocket.

Yup I have both and got both at crazy cheap brand new.
a couple shotguns not mentioned but i can highly reccomend the Stevens 320 (usually 180$) and the G-Force GF2P (usually 170$) and the Rock Island Armory M5 (usually 200$) usually don’t trust imported shotguns but i’ve put many rounds through these (mostly the RIA) and they’ve been dead stop reliable

Them Steven's 320s are clones of the Winchester SXP. If your able to swing one a basic SXP Defender runs in the upper 200s to low 300s. I have the Trench variant that went in the upper 300s.
Only reason I bring that up is the fit n finish on the SXP line is better overall then the Steven's are. And to be fair to the Steven's, a 320 did pass TFB-TVs shotgun burn down and it surprised James 😅
I actually carry a 3.5" Heritage RR birdshead 22mag in a homemade learher deep-tuck IWB holster ....its my King of the Poors set-up😉

This video is a huge public service. The advice is extremely sound. My additions would be to show how to take the deer plug out of the shotgun because most people have no idea that it could be in there. And on the taurus, second strike capability is actually a big plus. Sometimes cheap ammo is Milsurp European machine gun ammo and has hard primers.
If you’re gonna go with a .22LR handgun, what about the Keltec P17? It’s semi-auto, 16+1 capacity, and for $200 you get the pistol plus three magazines included. It seems like a much better option than the revolver.

My local Walmart pretty much has the Maverick 88 (12 gauge, 20 gauge, & 20 gauge youth) in stock most of the time for $197 for over 2 years now. Mossberg 500 has been around for 63 years, and the Maverick 88 has been around for 36 years. Pretty impressive run for both if you ask me!
I wish walmart would carry the security version of the model 88 wich has the 7 or 8 round pump. But they won't because it's not the hunting model
The first handgun I bought was a hi-point C-9 25 years ago. I got it for 75 bucks and never had an issue with it but it was during the magazine ban when you couldn't legally carry. Today I would recommend saving for a canik.

Maverick 88 for home defense & hunting, Heritage Rough Rider with both cylinders for small critters, Ruger LCP for your pocket rocket, a MilSurp if you can even find one, and I'd even say a Taurus Judge if you get lucky like I did.

I have a Mav 88 security model, 7 shot i believe. Fantastic gun. I bought mine for about $220 only about a year ago, brand new. I did add an adjustable stock to it just because i could and it just makes it more comfortable for different people to shoot but even out of the box it’s going to work every time.

Honest Outlaw, I'm with you on this great video! I grew up on single-shot shotguns...got my first duck, pheasant, and turkey with them; they are far from obsolete. And I concur with your plug for the Heritage Rough Rider pistols; I had a $38 credit at my local FFL, so I picked up the basic Rough Rider (RR22B4) with the 4-3/4" barrel and rosewood grips for the whopping sum of $114 out the door (in middle Georgia). At that price, I couldn't afford not to buy it, LOL! I tested it at 16 feet in my garage (freezing, windy, and dark outside) with CCI Quiet rounds and it was dead on...perfect for pesting. Later on, I tried it with hollow points on my 7-yard range, and they were spot on, too. For just over a hundred bucks, it makes for a perfect truck gun, a spare gun for...whatever. Great video; keep up the good work! :)
Paid nothin for my Mav 88. Uncle got to old to handle it and told me to have it. He had just the pistol grip on it. Put a Hogue stock on it & love it.
Maverick 88 is such a great gun. Took it to the range shot some clays and it worked flawlessly kick wasn't even bad felt just right. Recommend security model with 7+1 tube and if you want later change the stock to a foldable
When my wife and I got our first house, we didn’t have a whole lot of extra cash for anything. We did, however, save up for a couple months and picked up a Mav 88 with extended mag, and a Taurus PT111 G2. The Taurus cost us $150 (used) and the Mav 88 was $175. We still have both, but have graduated to more expensive more optioned out firearms. It’s funny, we still take the originals out once every year or two just for fun.
When friends or family want our advice on firearms, it usually comes down to a pump shotgun and an inexpensive semi-auto (usually a PSA Dagger or G3C).

Hi HO I bought my G3C based on several reviews and the price. Frankly being a new gun owner most of the problems I’ve had were with me. I’ve had very few jams or double feeds with the G3C - like under 3 in about 120 rounds. I can’t say the same for my PT145. It’s very picky with ammo and absolutely won’t handle hollow points. It’s just not reliable enough to be concealed carry even though it’s small. Your video on gripping the gun correctly improved my accuracy dramatically. Good work.
Also some LEO trade in pistols can be had for around that $200 mark. S&W M&P 9mm/40 and the Glock 22s in 40

@@hamishcarter8982Idk man, I have a Ruger LCP + LCP Max, and my family have multiple Taurus G2s or G3s. I've had issues with feeding on both LCPs, and weak mag release springs on the LCP Max. Also rusting issues on the slide. Never any issues on any of the Tauruses.
Ruger's been milking its reputation for too long. If I wanted a non-pocket pistol, I'd go with Taurus over Ruger at this point.

I don’t have 10% of your knowledge but I do enjoy learning and listening to you. My first gun was an H&R single 20 gauge as well. My dad got it for me and I still have it 60 years later. My second was an H&R 22 mag I got about 1981. What a great gun to shoot. I picked up the H&R 20 and 12 gauge pumps about 20 years ago. Great guns on a budget.

As a European it's interesting to see this list. Due to import restrictions you guys seem to have quite a small selection of cheap stuff. Dispute sanctions Baikal shotguns are still quite big here. Baikal along with Norinco both make fairly good cheap copies of anything you could possibly want, from shotguns, AKs, hand guns etc. With a brand new single shot 12 gauge going for 150 dollars and a used one for 50 dollars if that (and that's mostly tax).
Also the cheap hand guns here are typically made by Springfield, norinco or Tanfoglio, although the EU hand gun market is weird as most countries limit the number of hand guns that can be owned, so glocks, HK and Sig, high end revolvers and olympic 22lr stuff is more expensive than you guys but anything old or not 9mm or higher caliber is dirt cheap. You can literally pick up a perfect Walther PPK for 100 dollars no problem (if you live in a country that gives you space on your licence). Derringers, FN High powers, pocket pistols, ex 1980s police and military service pistols are all well under 200 dollars.
I have two Maverick 88s, one in 12 gauge, one in 20 gauge. They are both amazing reliable guns.
Police trade ins are so slept on. I got a police trade in Glock 22 and it still runs perfectly. Think about it, most officers will never get into a shooting, and the most officers retire after about 20 years on the high end and are only required to do a 40 round course once a year at most agencies. 40x20= 800 rounds put through it over 20 years.
Police trade in or civilian used, I don't think you'll find a Glock, Sig, or M&P at or under $200 unless it's hot and someone wants to get rid of it.

@@blakenoble4014 got a police trade in. It was perfect circumstances. My dad is a deputy and he has a buddy who is a retired deputy who owns a gun shop locally. So he gave me a hefty family discount since he’s known me and my family forever walked out $315 taxes and background including. So I guess technically before taxes and background I was in the $280ish range which while not under $200, is a hell of a deal. 4 mags too.

Most shooters I know couldn't afford enough ammo to wear out a Glock, or nearly any other pistol.
Before I got out of law enforcement, the Taurus Gs were filling up our gun vault in our evidence locker. Cheap and effective. I'd cavoite on the SAA .22s like the heritage and say find a sale with the dual cylinders so you have the option of .22LR or .22WMR. They still go for under $200 and gives you options and a little more bang for your buck. Had a lot of the heritage rough riders in the evidence locker as well. Both are effective.
Also on the LE trade-ins look around and try to find the dealer they trade to. Many will buy the whole lot of a departments guns and sell them for the same price. Most departments will have extra guns to replace if something happens and these guns will have very little wear and tear, but will be listed at the same price. If you keep an eye on these dealers and get in fast you can grab a barely sometime never used gun.
Sometimes you can find black powder SAAs with conversion cylinders in pawn shops for under $200 because they are not common and they don't know a lot about them, its still a SAA but steps up to a .357/.38 or .45LC. most you have to remove the cylinder to reload but after 5-6 rds of cowboy lead.

This is spot on, the 88 is literally the benchmark for utility and reliability any shotgun should try to make. The Taurus pistols are great and as far as the single action 22’s I’ll bet any car jacker you poke a hole in with one will charge their mind.
I scored a ruger police service 6 357 for 150 bucks! It's a great back up for me. Also scored a walther p 22 for 200, good accurate gun!

I recently bought a Ruger LCP for 180. Brand new from Palmetto State Armory.I love how easily concealable it is. Just carry it in your jeans pocket. Came with a pocket holster, but only one magazine.
I've mentioned it in a previous video, but the Diamondback Sidekick should be mentioned alongside the .22 revolvers. Brand new it's out of the price range, but it's close enough that if found on sale or used it should be at or under $200.

Heritage revolver in .22 mag is insanely accurate. Its a shame there's no good loadings though
But the mav 88 is absolutely the correct answer for cheap home defense
Hornady makes a critical defense load for 22mag. Winchester also makes a 22 mag silvertip.

@@jamesbuchanan3145 I have the real Glock too, but after about 3000 rounds of various quality through the dagger it’s at the point where it’s in my carry rotation. It’s a damn good gun for the price and costs about 1/2 what a Glock would. It’s better to have a dagger today then wait months to save up for a Glock.

Fair point. And I'm strongly considering a Dagger for a "glove box" gun. It's between that and the SD9 2.0 from Smith. I'm leaning towards S&W because , again, reputation.
The Maverick 88 is probably the best gun for the money, period. I bought mine for $230.00 and then replaced the stock with a Magpul stock, and bought an M-Carbo trigger kit. The gun is near flawless and still cheaper than a M500.

I would get a Hi Point JXP 10mm....got one just to try out 10mm it is fantastic and very accurate..put many many rounds through it including SIG JHPs 0 issues none!!....really like it !!

@@bendabutcha yep. Personally, I'll buy 10 dagger compacts over any Taurus. That's just my bias, but to be fair the Dagger is a fuckin sweet shooter. Just put another 300 rounds on mine today. Nearly at 6k overall without a single issue that I didn't cause (I reload).
Taurus has a horrible track record that they are overcoming recently. I have a Taurus tx22 and a .357 tracker. I love them, but I'll pick something else to defend my life with based on their track record. That could change, but it would take years/decades

The Taurus G2C is the #1 best-seller at the gun store I manage. Here in NC, they run about $299 new...and $300 is the typical limit people put on themselves to buy a gun.
That being said, times are tough and sales have plummeted. Thank goodness for decent, budget-friendly guns

I bought a used M&P shield 9mm a few years ago for $250 that had hardly been shot. Came with both mags. I have done nothing to it except shoot it quite a lot and clean it now and again. Still my edc to this day and I honestly don't have much of a desire to change that.
Can't go wrong there. Shield is an awesome EDC.
No reason to want anything else unless you can afford another , great guns I suggest that gun to all my new gun owner friends and 90% try it and buy it
@melroberts8877 yeah, I've thought about upgrading to the shield plus, and at some point I probably will, mainly cause I would like to be able to accommodate a weapon light, but my first gen shield works great and ai can shoot it very well so I'm not in a rush.
I have a Pardner pump, bought it a few years ago, new, for about $199. Works just fine.
I have a G3, full sized. It runs just as well as my M&Ps and Glock 43.
My first shotgun was a HR Pardner single shot 12 gauge. It was tough, but a limbsaver and practice, it's effective.
I agree with the 20 gauge, I have a Savage and and H&R single shots. Simple to use and very reliable. When you are poor, you can make it work and work very well.
I have more expensive firearms and still my 20 gauge NEF single shot is what I grab to small game hunt a lot, especially if going to do a bunch of walking. Not what I grab for home defense, but I’d be happy to have it if it’s all I had. Just build a technique that works for you that keeps it fed and will be in pretty good shape.
Stoeger STR-9C is a great gun that you can get under $200. You can also get a PSA Dagger for around $230 if you wait for sales and buy the slide and frame separate. Great video though! Always love your recommendations, very knowledgeable

You mentioned the Ruger security 9 at the end. I got back in November I think for $224 and very happy with it. Goes great with my PCC.
Good video. Nothing wrong with the Maverick...I've shot many and have never been disappointed. I would not be afraid to use for home defense. That being said, I have a Remington 870 that I bought over 20 years ago, as it is a bit better than the Maverick and there were more barrel options available to me as I also use it for hunting birds and also for protection in the field (think heavy slugs for grizzly).
