Great job can't believe it was your first neck. Inspiring! It's sometime nice to roll of the fretboard edge so don't worry about the sanding, maybe roll off all up the neck?
Great work. You are the King of the Spirit Level! You have more spirit levels than some people I know have teeth. Or for that matter brain cells. Anyway, well done and as someone yet to take the plunge in building an instrument, really helpful.
Haha thanks mate! I can get spirit levels pretty cheap so I figured I'd just use them rather than buying expensive straight edges. If you're thinking about building a guitar, I'd say go for it! Great to hear you found this helpful, cheers!
@@AlexisGuitars lucky you. I’m all for a bargain; today I made some bench cookies out of takeaway sauce pots and some non-slip matting I have - worked perfectly! As for build, I’ve been relentlessly watching build vids and planning it for a few years so I’m close to taking the plunge and f-ing up some perfectly good wood. Looking forward to seeing your build progress
Nice! I had to Google what a bench cookie is which highlights just how little sport I do. Thanks for the support! I can't wait to start work on the next steps of this. Hopefully I can start next week with the work for part 3
Regarding the neck shape going into the fretboard, that's fine! I carve about 1mm into the fretboard typically :) also cutting the fret slots is a little easier if you radius first. Great stuff, good luck with the rest
Cheers mate! Appreciate the tip! Yes I think I will go into the fretboard next time when carving to try it out and see what I find more comfortable. Thanks for watching :)
Looks pretty good to me. It's a very terrifying thing to do for the first time (it was only a year ago I did my first!). I think I've decided to route the truss rod channel through onto the headstock too, especially as on that first neck I managed to drill through the back of the neck! As for oak... the guitar I made has an oak neck and it seems stable so far, but I bookmatched two pieces which should help against twist. The oak grain is quite prominent which might put some people off to hold - but I barely notice.
Thank you! Interesting about the oak grain, that's one of the things I like about it! Haha I could see no way of drilling a hole to the truss rod cavity without either drilling through or missing completely so chose the easier option
Oak is fine. My very first guitar is 100% oak and I have no issues with warping/bending. I even prefer the oak fretboard to my mahagoni fretboard on my second build. So don't sweat it.
That's great to know, cheers mate! Yes I really like the feel of my fretboard and neck. I can only assume they are oak. I'm pretty certain about the neck but the fretboard is a slightly darker colour so not sure. A mahogany fretboard sounds really interesting, though!
Don't listen to the people who say you can't use oak. The instant someone starts talking about "tonewood" you can pretty much ignore everything else they say. Brian May's "Red Special " has oak components - the solid central core of the body and the fretboard are both oak. If it's good enough for Brain May.............. Another UA-camr, Keith Brown (a woodworker, not a guitar builder) made a guitar from salvaged oak coat stands, and it sounds pretty good! Here's a link to Keiths playlist - ua-cam.com/video/8GrsDfIVBQ4/v-deo.html Possible disadvantages to using oak:- Some people consider it unnatractive. It has a very open grain, and this may need filling depending on the finish you want. But mostly, it's heavy! Looking forward to the rest of the build!
Thank you so much for the info! I love the open grain feel of it. At the moment I'm thinking of just oiling the neck so will probably leave it open. I'll check out Keith Brown's channel and yes I absolutely agree, if it's good enough for Brian May haha! Thank you for watching mate
Interesting, and thanks! I'm not sure it is though, as the grain is quite open. Would you expect that from fir? I used douglas fir on the body and it looks and feels rather different
That was amazing mate! You made a pretty good Job. This is a Fine handcrafted neck
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it!
You are doing some great work.. Tim Sway will be proud of you re-tasking materials lol!
Haha cheers mate, I appreciate the feedback! Thanks for watching :)

Cheers mate! Yeah I'm definitely going to roll it off a bit all up the fretboard to soften up the edge. Can't wait to get to actually play this!
Nice work! The fretboard looks great!
Thank you very much!
Really impressed you tackled making a fretboard on your first attempt. I'm still too scared to take that on!
Thank you! The fretboard was by far the hardest bit so far and I won't know how it went until it's string up haha
Really impressed with your first neck. For my GGBO build I still bought a neck kit.
Thank you very much Graham! Annoyingly I won't know how it went until I string it up though haha. Good luck with your build!!
Well done! Looks like you got a good result there 👍
Thank you! I'm really pleased with it

Wow that is cool, been waiting for this vid
Cheers mate!
