Dame Edna absolutely knew what she was getting into when she invited Robin Williams onto her show. Although she had always dominated every interview she had ever been on, she knew the difficulties of someone who was, like her, an off-the-cuff improv comedian. She gave him his 15 minutes of fame, then took back control. There are very few impovs who can do this when they are put on the spot. Both brilliant, different styles, but both gave a nod to each other for their craft. What the hell will we do now that they both are dead?

Amazing dynamic in this video. Robin storms in and completely takes over. Edna has no choice but to let him roam free and wear himself out a bit. When his energy starts to decline a little, she rips his mustache off but it doesn't take him down enough. She has to call him out on his "stupid Italian accent" and over the top energy. The last two blows almost took him down too much so she comforts him and builds him up again at the same time as involving the other guests and rounding off the show with a musical finale. Brilliant!

I was really impressed with the way Humphries handled Robin Williams, because both of their styles of humor demanded that they be in total control of the moment, especially Williams. He (or rather her, ha!) graciously gave Williams the stage at the same time never letting anyone forget who was in control. That was the one thing about Williams that I totally disliked. His absolute need to totally take over the stage from everyone else. Ruining the timing and confidence of other comics. He demanded that everyone become his audience. Edna never lost a step and certainly didn't become part of his audience

What a time when tv was made with passion. How funny Dame Edna trying to bring Robin Williams back down to Earth not yet realising that this very situation became the ideal celebrity interview for any aspiring TV host and that losing control of your own show to this man would one day be considered an honour and a privilege. I'm an Australian but unfortunately only old enough to have Hey Hey It's Saturday as the closest thing I would get to this 😢.

"you're a kaleidoscopic nightmare as a matter of fact."
"carpe per diem, seize the check." robin broke up barry pretty good with that one.

There are not many (any?) people who could take over Dame Edna's Show. Edna did well to wrestle control back, claiming Robin had been trying to get on the show for ages. This is amazing comedy.

The biggest surprise is not how well Robin pratically takes over the show, but how Madge doesn't react to being called Nancy Reagan. RIP Robin Williams, Barry Humphries, Rue McClanahan and Madge.

I think people have got it wrong, imo there wasn’t any upstaging by Robin here. I believe it was all part of the script although improvised, if that makes sense. That’s why both Robin and Barry were comedy geniuses. Also, everyone keeps re-quoting “carpe diem, seize the check”, but how about giving a shout out to Rue McClanahan’s “keep your pecker up”, when advising Edna, and the irony of that, as well as Robin’s retort “good luck with that” back to Edna ….so hilarious! 😂 All four of them (Madge included) sadly gone now! May they RIP.

PS That frail woman is a woman who was a long time actress who played Madge Allsop - originally a Kiwi. Incredibly funny - Recall Edna bashing her for knocking over her Gladis and destroying the set ( a set up of course ) and she kept that face. Golden. Passed several years ago but she was brilliant .

The Madge Allsop character was a Kiwi, but Emily Perry (who played her) was actually British - born in Devon. She passed at age 100 in 2008.
