The amount of comments that naturally use the pronoun 'she' or 'her' to describe Dame Edna Everage is testament to the brilliance of the late Barry Humphries. To have have successfully created such a convincing character that is in contradiction, so outlandish, so exaggerated that it should be obvious that this is nothing but someone in costume. Yes, my dear Possums, she's a legend or shall I better say the most legendary Australian woman!!! When I saw Dame Edna for the first in London, I was thrilled. She's so overwhelming that nobody can resist her. Whenever she appears in Great Britain all her shows are sold out weeks before her arrival. She 's probably the only comedian who's allowed to gossip about the Royals, international movie stars, politicians and other high-standing people, and she plays her role very well!
What always came across so clearly about Barry Humphries was his razor-sharp intellect. He would run circles around anyone and everyone in his presence - not just because he was funny but also because his brain worked so much faster than everyone else's. Just read his wiki entry, which is fascinating. Go and read it.
Dame Edna is in a class of her own. Not only did she commandeer the show from the moment she appeared, at 6:07 she got a good jab at Chevy Chase, who acted like a real asshole when he appeared on her show. The elegance of the insult is elegant, charming and full of venom. "Of course, little Chevy cut quite a few classes...." BRAVA!
