Something a little different gonna start doing more of these! You savages let me know what your interested in or want to learn about! also if ended up trying workout at the end let me know your scores!
Great idea. I want to know what you do for balance outside of the water. Also, I've been practicing handstands because of you and want to know how long you can hold one for?
Ok seriously I don't have time to watch this right now--but I just wanted to say there is no other pro surfer vlogger out there that does these kind of helpful videos. What I am saying is that you're a mensch. Good on you.
The most important part of learning to SURF is preparing your body for the journey. No one is stressing the importance of core strength exercises such as (push-ups, sit-ups, bar dips, stretching, balance workouts, etc.) and weight training for stamina/endurance. When you have established & maintain these fundamental core strengths, your progression in surfing levels will increase much quicker.
i can vouch for this! Went to Ecuador and surfed every day for 7 weeks after 20 years skateboarding experience. I did learn to surf, but still injured from it 2 months later !
I'd love to see videos of you analyzing your waves with your brother where you explain what makes that ride a good ride, where do you put your feet and why, what was going trough your mind, etc. Love these videos, keep them going
Nathan is first class. It’s a nice change to see his generation of surfers share the stoke. If you have access to a pool, get a bungee cord and belt. Anchor it to a tree or post and jump in on your favorite board for resistance paddling. I did this for several weeks before a Mentawais trip this year and it paid off.
Dude, I love how your workouts always incorporate proper technique. It shows you know what you're doing. Whenever I make it to Hawaii, ill love to have a workout session with you. I believe you're super underrated for your workouts, they are solid! more surfers need to get on your program or create their own. keep on Doing Something Right! #DSR
Can we have a bit more on paddle tekkers please...ie...do I put all my arms in and dig deep all the time,? Or to elbows only? Do I pull under the board or straight down or away from the board when paddling.....are there certain times to paddle in specific waYs ...ie are your paddle strokes always the same strengths snd speed or say just b4 you pop up do you go for quicker/shorter strokes only to elbows or another technique...can you talk us through the paddle technique from when the wave is 5 metres behind you till you're up and riding please...sorry for nerding on paddling but it'll massively help me out to know what to practice. Cheers nate
I wanted to improve my paddling endurance and I came up with a similar exercise to the one in 6:35 because I felt like it replicated paddling the most. Glad Nathan agrees
Pushups, pullups and delt work pretty much cover it for me. Make sure you are doin full range of motion. Slow and controlled on the eccentric. Bands are fine for warmup but you want to build muscle so weights are going to make you strong. Lower weight with high reps (max 30) to build endurance and strength. Mix in cardio. Boom done.
Thanks! I just discovered if I smile while I’m doing these and probably any routine, I felt grounded, stronger, and having fun 😃 Just did the laying down arm lifts over large containers of coconut oil because I don’t have kettles 😂 So grateful for having these exercises 💛🙌
I’ve had four shoulder surgeries in six years. I’ve lost so much strength and ROM it’s, to be candid, depressing. My last one was right before Covid hit and was not able to to attend physical therapy or go to the gym for recovery. Thank you for the crossover symmetry product, just bought it.
I’m in the same boat, shattered my shoulder bodyboarding twice 2 years ago and needed surgery on it twice. Despite a relatively steady yoga practice I still don’t have full ROM. Can you please let me know how this goes for you?
One of the most impressive things about you Nath is the ability to take a beating and carry on as if nothing has happened. Ive seen vids where you take multiple massive waves on the head, get washed in and just run down the beach to paddle out again! I hope you have some fitness app on the horizon because I would sign up! No way I can keep up with this sort of intensity but appreciate the paddle strength tips and can only hope to emulate the "never say die attitude" in the bigger stuff! lol bigger stuff being over 4ft for me!
Coming out of a 15 year drought of no short boarding and barely any body boarding I did modified straight arm pull downs on a overhead cable machine. Worked great doing max weight for sets of 20-30 and 2min interval sets. Also did "sprints" as my cable machine allows me to pull the cable quickly without the weights flying around. Also with the machine it allows 2 handles on 1 side to work with equal weight so I get the bench in an incline position and grab both handles and do a swimming motion for basically the same sets as the straight arm pull down. In December I couldn't hang in the current at 6ft prays on a bodyboard now I can short board for 3 plus hours pretty easy
Thanks for sharing this video. I'm excited to learn about how elite surfers prepare for surfing -- fitness, diet, etc... It's easy to assume that elite surfers are "naturally gifted," but clearly that is one small slice of a much bigger pie.
This is a new genre hydromind is leading the way. To be surf ready in places that don't have surf all the time... Stoked... But what I really want to see Nathan Florence do. Is paddle out at ocean Beach San Francisco and get some barrels. You have to add it on to a Mavericks trip.I think (ocean Beach San Francisco )might be one of the hardest paddle outs right next to Puerto Escondido. It's sort of is California's Puerto Escondido... If anyone else would like to see Nathan and his friends get barreled and make the craziest paddle out. Say so.!! One of the hardest chargers out there
Bad asthmatic. Getting back into stand up after a decade hiatus. Need these gym techniques cause, surprise, surprise paddling (esp to catch a wave) tends to make my asthma come on... Cheers for these tips. 🤙
You should enter the Catalina to Manhattan Beach paddle board race for the hell of it. Back in the 80’s it was laid back now just like surfing it’s serious. I know you could make the distance but it would be a challenge.
Nathan ! Thank you a lot for showing me the crossover symmetrie. I feel so match relief off my shoulder pain🙏. This thing really works and I feel so much better after only one week of this exercises. God bless you 🫶
When I was a teen we moved from Punalu'u which had mediocre waves but pretty much all the time, to Hau'ula which had better waves but only when there was a swell, and of all things I discovered just good old push-ups did wonders for me. I also used to just paddle, even when I was a little kid, until my arms felt like noodles and then paddle some more.
Awesome, CrossFit workouts are applicable across many spectrums in sports. I need to work on my strength and endurance with paddling after a 2 decades off the board. Motivating to see someone in the surfing world applying WODS.
Hey man!! Great videos!! I'd like to learn how to train resistance under water! Cause sometimes you have heavy holdowns and I'd like to learn how to be good at holding breath, emergency breath, and the mental process to get trough it! Thanks 👌
Awesome work out tunes. Thanks for the tips. I haven’t actually seen a video on how to do a frontside fins out snap. Figured out backside but yeah that would be cool
Lack of mobility is definitely my biggest issue. Clearly your techniques work though Nath. Your endurance with paddling is the best in the business🤙 Can you show a routine to build strength and flexibility in the hips. I find my biggest issue surfing is being able to compress at the hips instead of bending my back and leaning over. 👍
Nate! You got some the best energy on youtube my man! Couldn't feel more blessed to have some of this content to look forward to during this Pandemic especially. I hope to emulate your mentally as I face some challenges that are sure to be on this way in life. Maybe not a challenge the size of JAWS! however I think we can all agree that seeing the world through your lens can add a little pep to all our steps. Aloha from SD BRO!
There’s one thing you forgot to mention that has increased my paddling efficiency by a full 7%. Have pump it up playing on repeat in your head while padding as well as while in the gym and on your way to/from the gym.
Thank you Nate. I have been following your Sessions at Jaws . You Are one of the Surfers That have raised the Barr in big wave Pro Surfing. Yeah good Advice . Look forward to future Footage.
Thanks a lot for this one! I had already a couple of shoulder injuries and surgeries, but of course I still surf and have my own workout. But i will add some of these to my exercises. Great Vlog, thx!
Awesome suggestions for improving back and shoulder flexibility. Going to buy a Crossover Symmetry band now. I use a Vasa SwimErg which seems to be working for paddling fitness.
Advice on technique of paddling, dropping in, and riding in the barrel. Also advice on progressing from being an Amateur surfer to advanced. Love your informative videos. I always watch when they are about teaching us. Thank you always putting out great content btw.
Great stuff. Thanks Bro. Love to see some exercises/stretches/plyos to both get the popup quicker and my overall surfing more dynamic. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Would be super rad to have a how-to on how to kinda improve your turns, like specific turns like holding on to a big close out float or like timing and making a roundhouse cutback look sicker or just generally how to kinda improve your turns and get more rotation and power out of them. Love the videos, keep up the great work. Oh and come surf New Zealand.
On the exercise at 6:03, arching your back helps you paddle for MUCH longer. I remember Nate explaining it to his dad in this video ua-cam.com/video/5_uWAdHElYU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=NathanFlorence at 10:07.
My life has always revolved around snowboarding but since I’m not very rich and Canadian, I’ve always felt aimless during the summers but I always loved being on the water. I grew up canoeing a lot and kayaking which lead to my job as a whitewater raft guide which I did for 4 summers. I didn’t love that though so I quit that and moved to a town with a good skate scene. I didn’t grow up skating but the community felt similar to snowboarding in so many ways and I love board sports. That was fun but I got hurt lots and I was missing nature so when I got to try surfing it really occurred to me that this could be my new summer thing because it combines 3 things I love so much; board sports, water sports and nature. Then I discovered travelling and now all I can think about is getting out of Canada to find some swell in a warm place. It’s taking over

Agreed -- super simple, no equipment needed. Battle ropes are another good one with minimal equipment. A full body workout, great for surfing.
