The most important part of learning to SURF is preparing your body for the journey. No one is stressing the importance of core strength exercises such as (push-ups, sit-ups, bar dips, stretching, balance workouts, etc.) and weight training for stamina/endurance. When you have established & maintain these fundamental core strengths, your progression in surfing levels will increase much quicker.

Nathan is first class. It’s a nice change to see his generation of surfers share the stoke.
If you have access to a pool, get a bungee cord and belt. Anchor it to a tree or post and jump in on your favorite board for resistance paddling. I did this for several weeks before a Mentawais trip this year and it paid off.

Can we have a bit more on paddle tekkers please...ie...do I put all my arms in and dig deep all the time,? Or to elbows only? Do I pull under the board or straight down or away from the board when paddling.....are there certain times to paddle in specific waYs ...ie are your paddle strokes always the same strengths snd speed or say just b4 you pop
up do you go for quicker/shorter strokes only to elbows or another technique...can you talk us through the paddle technique from when the wave is 5 metres behind you till you're up and riding please...sorry for nerding on paddling but it'll massively help me out to know what to practice.

Pushups, pullups and delt work pretty much cover it for me. Make sure you are doin full range of motion. Slow and controlled on the eccentric. Bands are fine for warmup but you want to build muscle so weights are going to make you strong. Lower weight with high reps (max 30) to build endurance and strength. Mix in cardio. Boom done.

One of the most impressive things about you Nath is the ability to take a beating and carry on as if nothing has happened. Ive seen vids where you take multiple massive waves on the head, get washed in and just run down the beach to paddle out again! I hope you have some fitness app on the horizon because I would sign up! No way I can keep up with this sort of intensity but appreciate the paddle strength tips and can only hope to emulate the "never say die attitude" in the bigger stuff! lol bigger stuff being over 4ft for me!

Coming out of a 15 year drought of no short boarding and barely any body boarding I did modified straight arm pull downs on a overhead cable machine. Worked great doing max weight for sets of 20-30 and 2min interval sets. Also did "sprints" as my cable machine allows me to pull the cable quickly without the weights flying around. Also with the machine it allows 2 handles on 1 side to work with equal weight so I get the bench in an incline position and grab both handles and do a swimming motion for basically the same sets as the straight arm pull down. In December I couldn't hang in the current at 6ft prays on a bodyboard now I can short board for 3 plus hours pretty easy

This is a new genre hydromind is leading the way. To be surf ready in places that don't have surf all the time... Stoked... But what I really want to see Nathan Florence do. Is paddle out at ocean Beach San Francisco and get some barrels. You have to add it on to a Mavericks trip.I think
(ocean Beach San Francisco )might be one of the hardest paddle outs right next to Puerto Escondido. It's sort of is California's Puerto Escondido... If anyone else would like to see Nathan and his friends get barreled and make the craziest paddle out. Say so.!! One of the hardest chargers out there

My life has always revolved around snowboarding but since I’m not very rich and Canadian, I’ve always felt aimless during the summers but I always loved being on the water. I grew up canoeing a lot and kayaking which lead to my job as a whitewater raft guide which I did for 4 summers. I didn’t love that though so I quit that and moved to a town with a good skate scene. I didn’t grow up skating but the community felt similar to snowboarding in so many ways and I love board sports. That was fun but I got hurt lots and I was missing nature so when I got to try surfing it really occurred to me that this could be my new summer thing because it combines 3 things I love so much; board sports, water sports and nature. Then I discovered travelling and now all I can think about is getting out of Canada to find some swell in a warm place. It’s taking over

so I've a question.... hope you don't mind, you mentioned in one of your recent videos when john got "8 perfect waves at pipe and backdoor" that he used several skills including crowd manipulation. how does one manipulate the crowd or how does that work in general? it seems you are all such a tight knit community and often out surfing together. I can understand it better i think in competition but is it something you put a lot of thought into when just free surfing so you can get the best waves? your whole family (including not by blood) is very inspiring thanks for sharing a little of your life with the world, makes my week each week seeing you all loving life and nature!!

Nate love the gym set up! Iam sure you have plenty of resources, but I have been a Owner and CF coach for 12 years. Would be happy to help with anything related to CF. Keep up the great content.

Do you have tips for speed and flow generation

as in on your board or speed of workout, cause ive noticed if you practice skating and not pushing only trying to generate speed from the tail and pumping its very similar and increases the amount of speed I generate on the wave.

      simply put: surf more.
I find a good way of doing this is to paddle back out anyway after the wave you think will be your last wave.
