Love this video. As an intermediate plus surfer, info on how to get to the next level is hard to come by - esp hands-on raw footage with commentary. Was great hearing how you think in the lineup. Hope you do that video on more complex positioning and priority decisions in a crowded lineup. That’s a topic I’d love to hear more about. Thanks Nathan.

Nathan this is one of the most fascinating videos I've seen you make. The explanations of what is going on and your responses to them is riveting. This was a huge day at pipe with 3rd reef waves. Watching how you navigate the waves and especially the crowds was fun. I'd be very interested to hear more about how the crowd determines priority on waves. Nice work!
Man you're inside break down of what it's like to surf pipe is insane. God knows that I would have loved to charge that wave when I was a grom watching Sonny, Johnny boy, and the rest of the OG's, But I can live that through your POV. So psyched on how you format and film your vlogs!!

Best advice ever: Just because the crowd is there does not necessarily mean the waves are there. I consistently score waves all by myself because I go up the reef beyond the crowd or a peak down the beach!
You are such a happy human dealing with what most believe to be terrifying even if surfing for decades. Keep that humility and happiness alive. Apréciate you teaching everyone young and old and sharing your experience. Aloha!

Love these types of videos. Have definitely utilized the duck dive when the wave breaks in front of you before but never understood how it worked. Type of waves that you go 'I should not have made it through that' are often times because of what you described. Thanks man!

Looking forward to the lineup explanation. I'm from FL so the battle for waves really isn't as cut throat or more so as dangerous as Pipe. I get more annoyed if someone gets in my way, given the outcome isn't as treacherous on our slow moving beach breaks. About 20+ yrs ago, I surfed on Maui with a few guys who knew a lot of the local crew (Windmills, Honolua Bay, and a beachbreak near Ho'okipa), so in a way I was ok(?) in the lineup, but I was really, really, really, really careful not to do anything stupid. I would catch basically the waves no one wanted, and honestly I couldn't have been more happy . I also did just as you showed, paddle more into the break just so I wouldn't mess anyone up. I'm hoping that earned me some leeway with the local crew. At my 2nd session at Windmills, I had a local tell me I wasn't ready for this type of wave. At first, I thought he was being a jerk, but honestly he was kinda looking out for me. I'm sure he's seen his share of tourist getting pummeled, and not only did he want me out of his way, but I really think he knew I was about to draw blood on the reef. That day I got caught on the inside, and shredded up my feet and shins on the the reef. So how crazy does it get with crowds at Pipe? I'm assuming if someone is out there surfing Pipe, then they have some level of ability. But at the same time, I'm wondering if there are certain "types" that mess up the line up. I am 99.9% sure I'll never be out there, so I'm very pleased with the videos you and Koa Rothman make of Pipe. The technology today with GOPros and UA-cam make it like I'm actually there, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I surfed Windmill my whole life. Being brought up in Honolua Camp before Kapalua took over. The reefs of Maui are actually really scary, as they are alive coral. It can be super dangerous. The guy that told you ,not ready was really trying to help. It takes time to get it and you can cut up in a hurry.

@@patricknoveski6409 Yeah, I got that vibe from him as the swell picked up. The first day I surfed it, it was waist to chest high, glassy, and was a powerful wave. No one was out but me and two of my friends. In FL, it would have been a packed lineup, but my buddy (who lived there at the time) told me this was "small" for the locals. My first wave was like I was surfing in an aquarium. I still remember the vibrant colors of the reef and the clear water. I'm used to being able to punch out the back when bailing (FL waves are much weaker), and when I tried it there I was swallowed up. The second time it was a bit overhead with some bigger ones every now and then. There were a few more guys in the line up, and that's where my dumb, naive "North Shore" (the movie) mind-set went. My buddy knew a few of the guys in the line up because he was a night manager at one of the resorts, so he introduced me. The guy who warned me reminded me of a distant cousin, and was direct when he said I wasn't ready for this wave. I at first thought he was just trying to get me out of the lineup by intimidating me, but he would paddle away from us to get in better position. I at first would kind of shadow him, stay about 10-15 yds away, since he has the local knowledge and I wanted to be in a good spot. I watched him catch a few waves with ease. He was out there maybe 45 min then he left. I finally caught a wave that proceeded to dump me on the reef and then the next wave finished me off. I ended up climbing up on a few rocks, defeated, cut up, and bloodied. My buddies watched the whole thing, and at first were worried, but then didn't let me live it down when they saw me climbing the rocks by the cliff. My buddy told me he's never seen anyone do that before. I'm glad it was pre-iPhone because it was pretty embarrassing. Ended up nursing quite a few cuts on the feet and shins the rest of the trip. Still wouldn't trade anything for those memories!
One of the worst "localism" situations I ever experienced was in Florida, at Sebastian Inlet around 75/76. I surfed Trestles with the Cali Crazies and it wasn't as bad as Sebastian! Just nowhere to "spread out" there, everyone right next to the jetty to catch that screaming right!

@@TooDaft And they didn't mind gang banging an outsider! Real hospitable bunch! I surfed it several times over the years, sometimes without incident, but usually with! Sorry to see that break gone, but not that scene! I could have had an easier time on the beach snaking their ladies!

These are great tips for everyone that applies to most breaks; positioning, duck diving, situational awareness, reading the ocean are all needed to matter where you surf

I love the part that you talked about in 18:42. This is so key to me when I bodyboard, as I would look up, find a pocket, and get straight back up with my board tilted a bit. This is really helpful as you can get behind the have quickly, and possibly paddle hard to get out of the next sets, like clean up sets for example.
mahalos for this every young surfer should know most of this. really showed what's going on in the line up (not just PIPE ) descriptions of techniques are spot on. took me half a lifetime to learn these on my little sandbar. I fared very well in the islands as a result. your true master of your craft when you give back with your insights. mahalos. Capt chris.

The process of decision making is so valuable to hear from you. For example I can paddle and duck dive no problem in good size waves. I can read waves better but when they get into bigger waves I struggle trusting myself because I don't want to get worked.
Lesson I learned today: The double scope !!!!! 🤩 I'm adding this to my game.

Nathan, thanks for sharing this. The best takeaway IMHO is that you sacrifice yourself with the wave instead of paddling for the shoulder and potentially being in the way of the other surfer and getting run over. Also I find when it gets bigger it is more of a sneak in and out of the zone looking for the in between ones that tend to shape better. Cheers from South Australia.

This is gonna help so many surfers new and old coming into or back into the lineup at pipe. You’re the man for sharing this. Love the situational awareness, using rips to your advantage, and having a real opportunistic mindset at pipe. But most people should know, a 10 foot insider, though sounding nonchalant to Nathan, is black belt pro surfer level shit and 100% life threatening. Blows my mind how you guys go about your sessions laughing the whole time when most of us are shitting our pants out there 😂🤯🤙🏽

Solid advice there Nathan. So many who follow the crowd mentality and eventually start paddling over to your spot where the sand bar is ripping hard (not huge sets) but the average wave.. and you end up with more and less energy used.

Love these videos. It sounds like a lot of the stuff I say in my head or occasionally bitch about out in the line up: why is the group sitting too far out, in a spot that isn’t working, and why do people not have situational awareness when sets are coming...like longboarders taking off nervous across to come back over the fall onto 4 shortboarders when they could’ve done the same bail off from where they were without putting four more people at risk. Thanks for the double explosion tip for a duck dive. I’d love to hear more about that exactly. I couldn’t see it exactly on the clip though I think I get what you meant.

This is a gem of a video, for novice to pro. The enemy is “panic,” right? And the tools to defeat panic are knowledge, physical endurance and Zen-like composure. Easy to say onshore but every word and observation in your post is capable being life-saving. At 70 I don’t charge big stuff anymore, but at 70, 6 foot is the new 12 foot! Nathan-Thank you for providing such invaluable lessons for watermankind!
