      Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen anyone duckdive that much whitewater even in HI...I would estimate that wall of whitewater he dove was 15ft, if he actually managed to hold onto his board (we don't really see) I'd be even more shocked, the ragdolling he must've taken while basically wrestling his board would have to be nuts.

    Nathan mahalo for sharing these important duck diving tips. I'm no way a big wave surfer just 4 maybe 5 feet Hawaiian is my max and even at that size I get completely worked. Seeing you make these split fractional micro second decisions in those size waves, in gnarly conditions with multiple elements thrown at you, was intense. Respect.

      Same, I get absolutely worked on duck diving just overhead days. I cant imagine triple or quadruple the height, volume and prob speed. it takes a special type of person to see a wave like that and say yeah, lets paddle out.

    Man the calm with which you guys deal with these situations. You get straight up rodeoed on that first wave you duck dive. Pop up 50 yds north like it's nothing paddling some more. Unbelievable. Just mad respects coming from me man It's an honor to watch guys like you surf. An honor just to watch.

    This vid warms the heart of an I'm old coot who started surfing in 1970... got the old memory banks turning over. Bailing wasn't an option back in the day, as legropes were'nt invented or commercially available until the mid 70s, even then they were like bungee cords, dangerous things, that would send the board flying back into your face when you surfaced.. they would stretch as they had thin rope and outside rubber casing..gonna say I didn't start using leashes until 1979/1980ish..Its a habit that stuck with me..bailing is a last option...Having said all that, duckdiving those giant waves takes a massive set of balls, and tremendous strength..well done for pointing this out Nate, good lesson for many .. you legend. Seen too many incidents and injuries over the years from bailed boards.

    Nathan your tip of being "hyper-aware" of the surroundings popped into my brain yesterday at a shallow reef at Ericeira where there was a shallow duckdive zone and this got me out of it. Also, the "staying hyper-aware" approach helped me this week to dare to paddle out to swells out of my comfort zone that I'm sure before I would've chosen to stay on land, too caught up with the idea of not being able to "stay calm". I know the steps I need to follow now to be ready to chase my surfing goals and a big part of the blueprint is thanks to your breakdown videos like this one, it has been a money changer for me! Thank you and all the glory in your Slab tour brother.

It's like a bird of prey is swooping in on you. You have to make the best choices you can to get out of that situation with the least amount of damage.

    Really helpful and a reminder that in waves big enough to break a leash it makes it more important to at least try to duck dive even though it might look hopeless - in some situations (like Ocean Beach San Francisco on a strong side current day) we would be in more trouble if we lost our board in due to a broken leash so that was a great breakdown.

    • @szacharym
      @szacharym 7 місяців тому +1

      It's a matter of pick your poison...In big waves the problem becomes when you injure yourself holding onto your board. Have seen guys get KO'd and all kinds of injuries to the upper arms and shoulders. OBSF is famous for this so you may have heard stories.

    Your experience and details hit home when put into practice. I’m not in “big” waves but frequently some “long swim breaks” and I’ve broken a few leashes and had to do the 200/300m swim. Current is the worst. These duck dive vids have really helped me improve, committing, sometimes white knuckled. But way less swimming and those extra split seconds on a big set are priceless. I also never knew you could get so thrashed and still have a successful duck dive. All the videos we see are these clean, smooth circular dives, but in reality that ain’t happening on a set and if you avoid eating or losing your board and lose less time, it seems like a success 😂. Thanks Nate 🖤🤙🏽🐓

    Something I found out by accident and we tested in Mexico was shallow duck dive on bigger waves. This helps both during shallow and deep water. But only if you're not in the 'fucked' zone. (wave is going to crash on you. But if you have the distance to duck dive and waves are massive, do a shallow. Just go under the water a few inches. I know it sounds counter to what we normally do but it works. A handful of us tested out different duckdives in Puerto and up the coast. It surprised us all. What happens is you get pushed back, but you miss the main disturbance right under the water. (the foam v air is also going to cause disturbance (staying afloat). But a shallow flat horizontal dive will keep you away from the main disturbance and you'll pop out behind the wave but a little backwards. Which sometimes is the best option (moving back). The main thing we found out is that it 'kept our breath'. That was the main thing. Not being rag dolled. Takes away panic, fear, and when you're a better distance form the explosions you have more options. And most of the time you have more energy and breath to paddle further forward. (remember we tested this shit aha ha ha) -- Try it.

    Droppin knowledge! On a similar note, you should make a quick vid on bailing. I'd be interested to learn best practices for bailing in small/medium/large barrels. Only the small barrels would apply to me haha, but curious to know if it's safer to try to keep standing as it closes out, dive/jump ahead of your board, or shoot your board out in front of you. I would assume this changes as the wave gets larger. Keep killin it!

    ❤ this is such a great video, sharing such valuable and experienced gained knowledge :) all of those tips are gold. thank you. in other news, today i paddled out into some pitching mostly closing out but occasionally shifting and fast pitching spitting lefts, mostly more inside between larger closing low tide beach break sets. the first two attempts, i got pitched hard, one more over the falls, the other more simply pitched :) and while id prefer that challenge over mushy peaky weak waves with weak unsurfable shoulders, i switched into even more critically cautious mode. thereafter, there were a few maybe makeable but hollow fast drops, a couple i wish i had tried, and the rest mostly only paddling into position only to not go and wisely so. other than getting pitched twice, and the whitewater ride in at the end, the session consisted of me only watching the beauty and power of pitching lips. one thing that made me feel even better about that session was the boat trip video of yours that i watched where you paddled over to that psycho ledge unknown reef slab while john stayed close by on the safety dingy while you had a first person investigation but wisely did not paddle into anything :) while my session was baby pool compared to yours, and you likely would have done so much on the waves of my session, i still felt somehow better for having done only what i did :) thank you for sharing your adventures from your perspective :)

Even though I ditched and dove, I got tumbled at least three times. Luckily my leash didn't break and I duck dove next wave and made it out.
