Hope you guys learned something listening to me ramble! give the vid a Like for Snook and her war on lizards! let me know any other tips tricks vids you guys interested in!!! comment below and if you like the channel subscribe!
Hey man, any tips from a pro like yourself will always be put to the test. Haha. Much respect tho for putting out these ‘HOW TO’ vids, it really puts into perspective how much you care about surfers and their progression world wide. Big-ups and mahalo brotha. Hope to see JonJon battle for another world title. YEWWW! 🤙🏽
Thanks for the advices, legend! Not specifically a tip trick vid but I would be interested in a vid about your quiver and which board on which type of wave you're riding. Maloha!
I'm almost 50 now. Been an avid surfer since I was 12. I'm a cold water, Pacific ocean waterman. From SCUBA to body surfing to living on a boat. Mother Ocean is the meanest and most beautiful woman in existence. Nathan, what I wouldn't give to have someone share this incredible knowledge when I was learning. You're sharing pure gold here. Of course the young can't appreciate the value of your info...but I hope you know that we get it. Everything you said here was not new to me, or many of my age, but I appreciate what you're doing for the young or new. Bravo. Much respect. Keep doing what you're doing.
Wow man i really like these kinds of videos. It’s very uncommon to have a surfer at this level who is so articulate and can picture different scenarios so accurately. You would be a hell of an instructor. Im going out there next thursday and def try to use these tips on closeouts. Greetings from Uruguay, and keep on uploading this kind of stuff!
Can’t wait to try this out. Just started riding barrels in OBX last week got worked multiple times no idea how to bail and board hit me in the face while tumbling in the waves. Now I know to jump in front hand first to penetrate into the wave and seal turn out the back. Board goes behind you with the wave no fear of board hitting you
So good man, wow! You should put time stamps in these with titles (you can just put them in the description like this 0:00 - introduction 1:47 - X impact 3:53 - Y impact etc) this is such a valuable video resource and the more people can reference it the more helpful it will be. Just a suggestion, but dude...SO good. Thank you!
Nathan- I don"t know if you read these comments but your barrel and duck dive advice videos have been THE most helpful tools I've used to improve in becoming a marine mammal like yourself. Super appreciate it brother
This was great! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Falling has a steep learning curve, especially for someone like me that isn't super comfortable in the barrel. Much appreciated brotha!
Just got into a bad situation in a barrel and found this video. What a great source. Nathan described super realistic scenarios and excellent and clear explanations to avoid bad endings like the one had with four stitches on the neck and broken teeth. I can’t wait for the next barrel, but with more knowledge now! Meow
I am pretty sure I should watch this video two days ago, my right eye contour just got hit by my board in the closeouts, fortunately my eyes and my brain stay healthy but got a slightly blowout fracture of the orbit. The power of that turbulence area is really really crazy 🙃
This is so helpful! I love your theory on the water being stretched haha it is interesting, yes it’s strange, but I believe it!! Thank you for these very informative rambles, keep it up please!! 👏🏼🙏
What an absolute beast of a video. Thank you Nathan ! A Spanish surf instructor I know lost his right eye when falling in the barrel. The nose of his board scooped it out when he jumped forward and thus I’m utterly terrified of the idea of making contact with the nose while ”jumping forward” as I’m a newbie in the barrel department, but eager to improve. You guys have any tips on how to “make sure” you avoid the board while performing the jump? Especially backside seems tricky when u don’t have time to jump back / steer the board away from you. Thanks in advance and greetings from Finland 🇫🇮
Wow! Thanks for sharing this... Honestly, I've always wondered how could you guys master tuberiding by learning over a reef break! Now I know beach breaks are your school, and I will look differently to a close-out line-up 😉🤙 seal turn was the best. We naturally do this on bodysurf to avoid the smach, but never realized could be used on surfing too 🤪
Great video, rewatching prior to a barrel trip, and not to be a dxck, what you are discussing at 10:50ish is that water molecules have a strong bonds: hydrogen bonds, so what your describing sounds like it make sense, I've yet to experience that, but sounds scary.
Love the video. I wish I could use some of these techniques but I live on the east coast of Florida where the last barrel was recorded in 1972 . 3 foot is considered massive here. Still like listening to you talk. Keep it up love you videos.
A thing I learned with 40 years of surfing on sharp reefs including live reefs was wear reef booties. Everyone scoffs at them but it's nice being able to touch down and not get torn up.
Prayers out to you and your friends and family. Stay "hunkered down" as we say in Florida. Could be some lifetime swells on the south shore ahead of the H. Dougie.
Dude, you are the best!!!!! I've been looking for this topic for the last week, and found nothing, since I'm getting quite screwed everytime I fall in a backside barrel. Thanks!!!!
I always seem to use my front arm on the drive forehand and backhand. That use opposite hand and seal turn is the best thing I’ve ever heard. Swell coming again this week in oz. Will be definitely using the seal turn. Thanks Nate 🙏🤙
Super rad having learned all these techniques myself and having them backed up by you! Totally agree with the water tension thing! Have woken up the next morning after some "concrete water" with minor concussion symptoms more often than I would like...
That last move, I’ve always been amazed when Kelly Slater does it in WSL. Looks so cool and simple when a real pro does it. I’ve been looking for basically this exact video for years! Thanks man 🙏🏼🔥🌟
Thanks for making this! I have seen you and JOB bail on Pipeline waves by jumping feet first and always wondered how you did that with shallow reef below. Now I know! :D Snook is too cute!
Great tips as always Nathan Florence! Thanks a lot! I was wondering what the disadvantage of shooting my board forward and jumping feet first off the back. That way the board doesn't have the chance of hitting me in the head. Is there a higher chance of board snapping? Or something else? I live in a punchy beach break area and do this often in closeouts or when I can't exit correctly.
@@NathanFlorence has been firing ! should dm me @samslorach on insta, just so whenever you down this way or i'm over on the north shore could tee up some sessions!
Great video Nathan, thanks a lot!!! What about kicking the board forward and butt diving (or sitting on the wave...), then doing a jelly-fish like movement with the arms to move out of the wave pull? Any inputs? Have worked for me in some situations, specially on the backside...
Thanks so much for sharing and not keeping it to yourself. As I've said before, you have a talent in your communication, keep it growing and good waves!
Can you show more video clips of the last option you described? So often I watch you guys go through the backside of The wave in a close out but the video gets cuts to the next clip. I want to see the progression you guys go through on a bail....Tbh I really wanna see all the after parts of you guys bailing on waves. Maybe an aerial view with a drone.
Thank’a for all these details that’s awesome!!!!! You talk about leash size when you have to jump front of your board. How do you choose your leash size? Especially step up

Been waiting for this one .................. that was Gold !!
Snook is awesome !
So helpful thx.
Gave a like for Snook giving you a wet willy at 15:56 lol
My personal favorite eject is blowing the takeoff, getting stuck in the lip, board flips over as we're going over the falls, and land on the fins.
Hahaha this is a classic and a must do
my hip cringes with memories
Hahahahaha i broke one of my fins like that the other day in France
Got a fin my thigh this week.. Now I'm rewatching this video with 7 stitches.

Yeah except it’s an actual interesting topic
The seal turn changed my life, now I feel much more confident at the beach break near my home! Thank you!

go forth and practice
@@NathanFlorence hahaha if you need me i'll be at pulling into every close out for the next 6 months..
I also asked for it a lot.
Nathan you are awsome
Kucing called your bs 😂❤ cat was like: you're wrong you are all wrong! Don't go to the waaateeeer😅
As a bodyboarder I feel jealous u guys have an “eject” option, we just get carried underwater for miles
but you don't have to worry much about your board hitting you
Noah Fuhrer yea true
aaauttch man

You should do like a Survive Hawaii series where you talk about the gnarliest situations you get into and how to manage them
good idea!
This was great! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Falling has a steep learning curve, especially for someone like me that isn't super comfortable in the barrel. Much appreciated brotha!
stoked you enjoyed!

Hi Nate, 100% agree, you'll learn more trying to ride closeouts. Snookies got it right, eliminate all snarky lizards!!

I 100% agree with you, throw the pride aside and send it with the booties
I like the one reef bootie on back foot
This is like learning how perform an emergency landing in flying. Thanks for the insight! I don't think anyone discusses this.
your welcome

so its almost more important to learn how to fall than it is to actually barrel ride, thanks Nate
It´s amazing how you and the rest of the gang make everything look so easy even when death is a real possibility.

Dude this was such a good video
Thanks for another great vlog! BTW, what's up with the cable coming out of the ceiling and plugged into the outlet?
Thank’a for all these details that’s awesome!!!!! You talk about leash size when you have to jump front of your board. How do you choose your leash size? Especially step up
I use a strong 6ft-7ft leash, ideally I shove my board to wards the beach away from where I am jumping
Nathan Florence Thanks for the answer! 🤙🤙🤙👍👍👍
My prayers are with you, your family and friends. May that hurricane turn right.
I'll be sure to do this next time I'm imagining myself in a barrel 🌊
mad seal technique
You should write a little book about these tips. There isn’t a lot of information out there like this! Thanks!
Nathan, so good thank you for sharing all this information.
