Jeremy Brett played Max de Winter to perfection! As did Joanna David et al. We must applaud whoever chose Jeremy Brett because from thereon he was on the right path to be considered for Sherlock Holmes, in which role he excelled!

For me, Jeremy Brett is the ultimate and definitive personification of Max De Winter. I've seen the other versions (including the 1940's one with Laurence Olivier ) but this interpretation is perfect. I stumbled across this old series from the B.B.C. and was totally entranced. Anna Massey as Mrs Danvers delivers just the right amount of efficiency and menace to make her a deeply disturbing presence and perfectly cast. Thank you so much for uploading.

you may not read my comment but I would like you to know that I agree whole-heartedly with what you say here. The film we all remember has the definitive Mrs Danvers but Anna Massey rises to the occasion here, to enhance this absolutely spell-binding production that even the author must applaud!

I remember watching this when it first came out on the BBC and I was utterly captivated. Joanna David is without doubt the definitive girl - Joan Fontaine is so weak in comparison - and the later Anna Massey quite wonderful as the definitive Mrs Danvers, with Jeremy Brett so much better than the strangely wooden Laurence Olivier. Indeed, all those in the supporting roles are just so damned good.
Heresy, but the Hitchcock film has nothing on this piece of classic television. Thanks for uploading.

Of all 3 versions of Rebecca- this was the best one. It sticks close to dialogue in the book. A shame it is not available on DVD. I found a "bootleg" copy that was unfortunately recorded on the slowest speed with many artifacts, and quite blurry. If that person had only had the foresight to make a quality recording! The BBC started using sharply defined videotape to record their costume dramas, while in the US tape was poo-pooed in favor of film. (Tape is much sharper with better contrast than film.) However, in the 70's "broadcast" quality was analog and quite bad unless you lived 50 miles or less from the broadcast tower! Most parts of the US didn't have "cable" reception until the 1980's. We are lucky to see ANY surviving version! Another PBS series that was awesome and not available was "Motherlove", starring Diana Rigg as a sociopathic murderer of those close to her family. It's really creepy- look for it!

Poor spide, hehe. This is actually well-regarded as one of the best, if not the best, ever adaptation of Rebecca. Wonderful atmospheric studio sets, videotaping adds just the right kind of spooky mystery, it may have been for budget reasons but it's an added bonus way too many people brought up on American filmed TV shows fail to understand.

Wonderful that there was a whole miniseries! Hopefully, they've used the extra time to really develop the Author's intent. And I haven't noticed a single cigarette, so far. Just watched the '97 version, and had to watch most of it with a piece of paper in front of the screen, to block out the cigarette close-up shots, and with the sound off - reading the subtitles - because you could HEAR every drag on every cig.
I LOVE this Mrs. van Hopper!!! She must have been the inspiration for Hyacinth Bucket. Wonderful how she explains a man's hiding from her repeatedly as, "He must have had a penchant for me, but was unsure of himself."

I had forgotten seeing this all those years ago on 'Masterpiece Theater"--re-watching Brett in "Sherlock Holmes" recently reminded me that he was in this adaption of "Rebecca". Of course I love the Hitchcock version, and it is a film classic, but so far this version is the usual high quality British literary adaption for tv. Comparing it to Hitch is a bit beside the point--compare it to the usual crap you see on TV! And I love Jeremy Brett in anything!

The guy who plays Maxim reminds me of the actor who played Snape in Harry Potter. When I read it, I pictured Maxim sounding just like that. I liked the 40s version, but Maxim seemed too nice in that version, where in the book he was kind of a sarcastic smart alik. This version got that spot on.

Thank you for response. I recently watched Joanna David in the BBC version of "War and Peace" (1972) where she played the role of Sonya. She was cute there with black hair. I agree with you that the Hitchcock version is classic. Joan Fontaine is beautiful. I always loved her (I think you made a mistake - Joan played the title role in "Jane Eyre" with Orson Welles, not her older sister Olivia de Havilland). Yes, Liz Taylor was cute child-actress in that time and she played her role perfectly.

I think both versions have strengths. The 1940 movie, being a movie, takes 130 minutes. The BBC mini-series takes about 200. Some of those extra 70 minutes are used well to develop the characters. Others are filler and drag the pacing down. For instance, in Episode 4, did we really need to see everyone go on and on trying to find the right telephone exchange, and watch Dr. Baker slooowly walk across his office to his phone? The BBC framing story is bizarre. Who is the man the heroine is talking to? Her psychiatrist? In contrast, how chilling are the movie's final shots as the "R" of that emotionally loaded embroidered case is consumed by flames! (Which is BTW not a "Citizen Kane" ripoff - "Rebecca" was made the year before.) Though I think Jeremy Brett makes a dynamic Maxim, I personally prefer Olivier. They both capture what an insensitive jerk Maxim is, but I find Olivier more magnetic. Too often during the BBC version I wondered why the heroine was still captivated by this guy. I thought both Judith Anderson and Anna Massey were equally wondrous and terrifying as Mrs. Danvers. I like Joanna David's sensitive, nuanced portrayal of the heroine, but as for dinging Joan Fontaine for portraying her as a simpering wimp - for most of the story, the girl *is* a simpering wimp! Who in their right mind wouldn't have sensed a red flag in Mrs. D's push for the portrait dress? Joanna David had the advantage of a screenplay that omitted some of the heroine's most cringeworthy moments. "I don't want you to love me, I won't ask impossible things. I'll be your friend and companion, a sort of boy." I just wish the 1940s Hollywood code would have allowed the novel's original version of Rebecca's death. I would have loved to see Fontaine and Olivier play out that endgame!

Bonjour. Je cherche la version française de ce feuilleton, en DVD et VHS. Pourriez-vous me dire où je puis la trouver ? J'ai beaucoup aimé cette adaptation du roman de Daphné du Maurier. D'avance merci d'une réponse. Cordialement

Great to see Max being played so well. Such a contrast with Olivier's one dimensional overacting.

Is Firefox good? I have been having a lot of problems at Justin TV and was told to get firefox. As to the actors in this version, I think they were both perfect for the part, when JD daughter went on to play the same part in the CD version she was too pretty and By far not wimpy enough.

Not as good as I remembered, Joanna David is perfect but for the fact that she is patently too old at 32 - 'the Girl' was just 21 in the book. Everyone else more or less looks the part but is under-rehearsed and wooden; Brett never varies his tone at all whereas in the book he displays all possible emotions. Still, a helluva lot better than the excruciating ITV version with Charles Dance

I love new Mrs. Der Winter in 40's version more, i love her stunning look, it's cute. But this is more like in the book.

@bluegrassbaby86 I suggest you find the Faye Dunnaway version of Mrs Van Hopper, with a proper American accent and over-acting to much you cringe.

I know the "girl without a name" in the book was supposed to be reasonably plain but I'd like to think they could at least cast someone with some attractiveness. This girl is positively plain with not much presence.
