    *sigh* If only all the men in the world had the looks, the grace and the charm of the beautiful Jeremy Brett. So very missed. But I thank you immensely for sharing this classic. What a shame it's never seen the possibility of a DVD release! Crazy.....

    Jeremy Brett: elegant, well-spoken and completely, devastatingly good-looking. The consummate gentleman.
    In real life he appears, from his various interviews, to hv been fun-loving and warm. He is sadly missed. R.I.P.

    Oh wow, didn´t know of this version! Like it very much!
    Twenty years later it was Joannas Daughter, Emilia, to play the role of the "New Mrs. DeWinter" with Diana Rigg as Mrs. Danvers. That version I ike, too.

    Jeremy Brett is a smashing Maxim de Winter. At the beginning, in his interaction with Mrs Van Hopper, there was a twist of humor to his portrayal that some of the others don't have.

    I read that Laurence Olivier saw this mini-series and told Jeremy Brett, "You were better than I was in that role!" Of course, Olivier was in a feature film based on the novel, whereas this mini-series is very close to the novel.

    I like how in the book the waiter didn't see the mess until Maxim came to her rescue. LOL I like how he ignores her because of her station. I wonder if (like the book) her meal is better because she is with him, the distinction embarrasses her.

    Quite fun to see Jeremy Brett in this role. I always thought Olivier was so perfect for the character, I always pictured him when reading the book. But Brett is indeed a good choice, not as nobely handsome as Olivier, but he had more charisma imo, more of the Rochsterian sex-appeal. And I've always loved Brett as an actor, much more than Olivier.

      To add to that I think the reason Maxim fell so deeply in love with her is because he had gotten what he thought he wanted in a woman when he first married Rebecca...beautiful, accomplished, talented and seductive. Having lived through that, when he met the 2nd Mrs. De Winter her innocence, earnest affection and complete confusion over life must have been absolutely refreshing comparatively. This new type of interaction, and the chance to see what life would be like with a woman who would be nothing life Rebecca must have turned his whole life around. Of course, this all took place internally because Maxim doesn't emote happy well. lol

    I don't see how this one or the new one could ever take the place of the original Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine version. Even though it wasn't as true to the book I always thought that none of the others equaled it even though the others are also good.

      I prefer Laurence Olivier in the role of Max too but Jeremy Brett wasn't miscast. Like Olivier, he was an extremely handsome man. I preferred the speaking voice of Olivier though.
      I think I liked this actress in the part more so than Joan.
      This girl seemed just that bit more socially awkward but all in all both couples were outstanding.

    This is horrible! The actor playing Maxim has the most annoying voice. He is so harsh. There is no warmth between these characters, the lead actress has no glow asJoan Fontaine did.

      Just an observation...but the Hitchcock version was not true to the book. Jeremy Brett embodies Maxim De Winter. He is aloof, bitter, short tempered and snobbish. If the goal was to bring the book to life I think he did a fabulous job. He was played much to softly in the 1940's version and Fontaine (while wonderful) was to skittish by half. Maxim and the 2nd Mrs. De Winter were not warm with each other through most of the book...another consequence of Rebecca's overwhelming presence in their lives. Brett's accent is marvelous and perfectly fitted to the upper class, public school educated Maxim. This of course is just my humble opinion.

    • @Lisbeth170872
      @Lisbeth170872 3 роки тому +4

      Oliver is not snobbish enough. One wonders how he could have chosen Rebecca in the 1st place. One can see why Brett's Max may have chosen Rebecca by snobbery. And be 'ashamed' by his choice later on.

      I like d the Fontaine/Olivier, think F had a wonderful glow about her. But that film, the story, was superficial compared to this. More depth here in the characterisations etc.
