He is just perfect as De Winter, looks perfect for the role, and everything, plus that shot of him right at the start was amazing, he was so attractive.

Good heavens, he is among the best ones on screen. No matter what he's doing, he does it excellently. And I've only seen part 1.

I love how Max makes sarcastic remarks to Mrs. van Hopper and they just fly right over her head.

I love how he really obviously turns his face to talk to his future wife and Mrs Van Hopper acts like he is still talking to her.

I've watched this over and over and over again. Can't get enough of this version of Rebecca. I'd never seen it before. Wasn't even aware that Jeremy Brett had done it. I adore his portrayal of Maxime de Winter. He captures the tormented heart and soul of the character so perfectly and the wonderful love story between he and his new bride.... how beautifully that was captured as well. This is a far superior version than the Olivier version, though that was good as well. BBC always hits the nail on the head. Thank you so much for uploading.

Have been a fan of Jeremy Brett ever since I saw him in the TV series Jennie. Wonderfully versatile and brought depth and humanity to every performance. And he is the definitive Holmes as per the original books.
This version of Rebecca is definitely the best aside from the iconic Hitchcock version. It would have worked wonderfully as a stage play I think. It carries the claustrophobia and pent up feeling of the original story. Great acting and a joy all round. Thanks for posting. ✨💖✨

Jeremy Brett is the best Max. Even better than Laurence Oliver....yeah i said it 😅...in fairness he brings the character alive. And his accent is so ❤

I agree about Olivier. Jeremy is superior, in this and other roles. I think Olivier was a bit of a ham, and overrated.

Very Nice, beautifully adapted. JB is the perfect visualisation of the perfect Max De Winter, scion of the house of Manderley. Joanna David is perfect as the young artless lady of good family who is reduced through circumstances to become a companion of the crass, common and loud name dropping social climbing thick skinned Mrs.van Hopper. She is just hunting for an invitation and he is not biting. Very amusing. But she doesn't recognise the fact that he holds her in contempt.Worth watching.

My favorite version by far...Mrs. Van Hopper reminds me of Margaret Thatcher. Joanna David is pitch-perfect and Jeremy Brett, as always, is pure viewing heaven!!!

Many thanks for posting. I became a huge fan of Jeremy Brett for his superb portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, but had no idea of how much other great work he did, most of it apparently seldom seen in the USA. I stumbled across a reference to his work in Rebecca, and have begun watching it. Definitely better than the 1940 version.
Many thanks for posting this wonderful collection !!!

The mystery is why hasn't this version had a proper DVD release? It is by far the best version of 'Rebecca' yet the only way to get a copy is to buy a knock off copy from sellers of British films and TV series. The other series which mysteriously has never had a proper dvd release is Dame Diana Rigg in 'Mother Love' for which she won a Bafta award.

Some jolly fun trivia. Jeremy Brett was previously married to Anna Massey (Mrs. Danvers). And Joanna David's (the girl) daughter, Emilia Fox, later played her mother's part in the production of "Rebecca" with Charles Dance.

Anna Massey's brother Daniel Massey worked with Jeremy Brett in the 'Problem of Thor bridge' episode in granada tv's Sherlock Holmes. their father Raymond Massey played the role os Sherlock Holmes in 1931.

Jeremy Bretts so amazing...that brooding presence...he can just work it so much that it seeps through the screen! I always wish we could have seen more of him in leading roles! But I suppose he wasn't the 'fashion' for a bit, or maybe was always more occupied with theatre work...anyway, wonderful Maxim De Winter. I also recognize Joanna David as being Lizzies aunt Gardiner from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice adaptation! So interesting to see her here, and I think she fits the role better than Joan Fontaine, in terms of looks anyway, because in the book I think the second Mrs De Winter is noted as being somewhat plain (one of the reasons Maxim is attracted to her) and Joan Fontaine is so beautiful in that part you often think Rebecca would have had a run for her money looks wise, had she been alive!

@AjrimmerMr It is my opinion that this is the best version of Rebecca ever, considerably better than Joan Fontain, and even better than the Emilia Fox version, which was OK except for the ghastly Faye Dunaway overdoing it something terribly as Mrs Van Hopper. I think she wrote her own script. Then at the end they confused the whole story with Jayne Eyre.
I don't know where this 1979 version has been hiding. I have been chasing it for years.

I can't help but find Daphne du Maurier in all her books and films of them. She was a dreamer and in her admission always pretended to be someone else. Daphne could have been Rebecca or Mrs Danver, but may be not the 2nd Mrs de Winter though. Daphne could also have been Lady Dona St Columb in "Frenchman's Creek" - romancing a cheeky French pirate !!
