No Black, No White ~ just straight up Funky.. and some of us white peoples can dance that shit..! Im glad We the People can agree on Good Ole Funk from back in the day..
Play that funky music white boy. Wild Cherry song made a huge contribution not often appreciated today. They were White and we black people accepted them. The young are more fortunate than they think. We did the hardest work with wild Cherry kicking out funky music. Be grateful for today's blessings 🙏, before they vanish.
After all these years, changes in line up etc. they still got it big time! This might be one of my favorite versions of one of my all time favorite songs. Vocals still spot on, and the bass line totally badass!
I am a 55 year old Black man From SF east Bay Hood. When I was a kid, James Brown, George Clinton, Cameo & this band was the badest funkiest and we all loved their music. i still play it in may car MP3 Player today
If you've ever been to tipitina's, you know how small it is, but the band had the crowd rocking doing SCHOOL BOY CRUSH, audience participation, people were literally hanging from the rafters. People dancing in the isles whatever room they had left. Great show 😎 . They did all of they're hits . Plus an encore. We partied that night . Thanks AWB!
Man, that drummer is punishing that groove!!! That's Adam Deitch. Makin' it not too this and not too that and without being overbearing. This is Funky Drummin' 101. All his adlibs are in the right places. The secret to good music (especially funk) is that the silence, space, rests and gaps in the song "is music also" and it has to be heard. The music has to breath. Everyone be careful out there..
Man, does he!, you're good to give Adam Deitch the major credit he deserves and I'll readily support your motion! I was an enthusiastic AWB fan in the 70s, and it's only been 10 years ago or so that I found out Alan Gorrie had that great euro-funky outfit still running and "pumping" at 'par' with what they did before (if not as new, of course). The handsome center-stage-grabbing youth who fills in for Hamish really does the job, and so does, indeed, Adam Deitch. Everything you pointed out about him is relevant, I just object to your "Funky Drummin' 101" metaphor: "909" would be more adapted, I believe, at that point when you've worked so much that you're back to full simplicity, supported by full mastery of every hit, phrase, pattern, cycle, etc. Comparing his drumming with that of (almost-)original AWB drummer Steve Ferrone is even more revealing: Ferrone's playing was exquisitely adapted to AWB's music, very bouncy but very subdued, subtle, light while still very complete, consistent. What it reveals, to me, is that Deitch could be said to embody "21st Century Funky Drummin'" while Ferrone was one of the most articulate (Original) 70s Funky drummer. Don't you think?
1mespud thank you!!! As a keyboardist and vocalist I constantly have to tell young dimmers... “ please stop playing all over the song!” It’s like they want to show all their chops in one song..... Music hogs... gets on my nerves. Can’t even sing cause they playing every chop Known to man... ugh!
One of my *all time* favorite bands playing my favorite cut. I've seen them live in '77, '79 & 4 or 5 times since then. They kill it every time I've see them. As Funky as it gets.
These cats are truly the opposite of average when it comes to true funk....they had me rockin' back in the day and today....I'm very glad they are still performing and hopefully I can see them live soon:)
I totally agree with you 💯 The Average White Band Is still my favorite group from the 70's and still Is School Boy Crush All -Time Favorite Song 🎤🎶🎼🎵🔥🔥💯💕🙋🏾😘👍🏽4Real Ppl 💎💯 😉 Enjoy your Day My Friends and Family Amen 💖🙏🏾
From the 2nd LP Cut the Cake . It's just like school in 1969/70 . In 1974 Mate told me about this Funk group he heard in some London club , Scottish ( what ?) called the Average White Band .... I laughed ,you winding me up ? Lent me a cassette of the White album AWB what an outfit . Was in town that weekend to buy anything with AWB on it A funk band that didn't sell out to Disco .
That's my jam! AWB are the baddest white boys I've ever heard. I remember growing up to this song. They don't make good music like this no more nowadays.... Best FUNK band ever HANDS DOWN!!!
Great music. I remember when this song was first released in the 1970s. Sounds just as good as it did back then. This is one of my favorite groups. These youngsters need to learn that you need to play an instrument sometimes.
This is so soulful, and un-scripted. As I listen I can't wait to hear the next riff, drum beat and voice inflection. So Good. More of this and less violence laced music. Thanks for sharing
This is what REAL music sounds like...buying a computer and figuring out how to loop someone's else's music DOES NOT make you in the same universe as these guys..
@@harryparker3723 Not really, take your computer and make something of your own. Without a sample or loop that was made by a real musician. And have it last as long as this classic has. Then you'll be doing something. Otherwise..........................😶
This bass line was originally played by Hamish Stewart who left the band years back. This bass player plays keyboards for a lot of bands. He plays keyboards for Darryl Hall when he invites different artists to his home to gig. I believe its called Darryl's house!

The original members are gone except Amish steward. The spirit of AWB comes through the decades. Music is now racially integrated. Today's young take for granted what was rare in the 1970's. AWB has my absolute respect, because they paved the way for everyone to do black music regardless of color.
This right here, this right here, funkier than a can of Magic Shave. I often wonder how some people can’t understand what we feel whenever we hear AWB. If this doesn’t make your body move, something wrong with you. Long Live AWB 😎
heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy just a little bit....man....this use to be the joint......dang this take me back......these white boys always sound like they was brothas from the hood...and they still look good...heyyyyyy
absolutely loved them; worked at a big place at the time, and everyone (contemporaries) was heavy into them... thanks so much for this upload!!! great one. a great regret of mine is never having gotten to one of their shows! amazing band.
Back when the first came out, I realized I had a little soul brother in me. 66 year old white boy and still feeling the groove. Now where is some of that hot chocolate.
Rainbo Roller Rink. Chicago. Clark and Lawrence Ave. 1994 - 1998. The best! We had it made. Back in the day! I will never forget it. The place where the South Side and West Side came together.

The lead singer is Eliot Lewis... he's one bad ass player. Kills the keyboard and has mastered many musical instruments. He is a bit stiff on this but his heart is down for the groove.... Big respect. Check him out on Live From Daryl's Place... dude kills it on "Walk On By" live as well.
Nope: that oh so handsome "kid" is just as brilliant as Hamish, as Alan Gorrie singer-counterpart and "Fender-bassist" (the mobile keyboardist role when Alan is on bass is just a tad more anecdotical) , and Alan still leads perfectly, moving on to 21st-century-colored funk, 30 Years After. Hamish made the mistake of defecting, thinking he had a more glorious future In Sir Paul's band, so be it and let the remarkable show go on! ;-)

I was in the tenth grade when that came out and I thought that song was one of the hippest vibes out that at the time. I still love it.
That is literally one of the best live snare sounds I have ever heard!
I'm a drummer myself. Man this dude is so funky. I can take some pointers from him!

Tim, you should Listen to the original two albums with Robbie McIntosh! He will blow your socks off. He drummed like he had eight hands!
I think this drummer is right up there with Robbie
ABSOLUTELY!
The rhythm in this song is just purely "hands down" funky! AWB simply was one of those bands that was "one the ONE!"
