When you first heard them over the radio everyone thought they were a black group they got so funk and the groove We used to step and skate to this back in a day
so true i first heard them on the radio in High school and i used to think "Man thats cold blooded why did the name themselves that" not knowing they actually were a white band! amazing music love all of their stuff Queen of my soul, a Love of your own, Soul searching, pick up the pieces so many great songs
45 years on and I still can't get my head around that they're Scottish! What the FUNK! Geek moment: that was sleigh bells not tambourine. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF
Proud to have known them and done PR for them for about 30 years. Great guys. Excellent music. Retiring from touring after next year, so see them if you can! ❤
I didn't know they were retiring from touring. Fortunately I am seeing them in 2 weeks. They are playing in a festival where I live with Morris Day and the Time and Con Funk Shun. I am REALLY looking forward to hearing AWB! They are on my bucket list. I am just saddened that Hamish isn't with them and they have lost some original members. Should be a good show.
@TheDivayenta We went this weekend and saw them in a festival with 4 bands. In my opinion they were the best. The other bands were Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, ConFunkShun, and Morris Day and the Time.
When I discovered AWB in 1974, I had no idea these brothers were from Scotland! They were so funky, there was no way they were white! Later in life (1997) I had the opportunity to be part of a US Silicon Valley based team to do a “start up” in Scotland, where i lived and worked for several years. Then it all made sense. Loved your reaction, esp the part abt “dripping funky dust” as they exited the studio! You guys are expert AND funny! Kudos! Louie
The pride of Scotland! Watching them is a hoot- kilts and all! Cut the Cake and Pick Up the Pieces live!!❤❤❤Im dancing here! Dance Party with Airplay Beats! Lovin’ the sleigh bells!!!!
You got this sick old white lady to get up and dance this morning! 😂 I remember hearing them out of Detroit when I was young and listening to CKLW AM radio from Windsor/the Motor City. They were up there with Parliament for one of my favorite bands. Oh, and they're SCOTTISH. That blew my mind.
Britain and the US have been playing this game of musical ping pong for over 400 years, each putting their own spin on it, and sending it back and forth over the Atlantic Ocean! 🙃
I had the privelege of seeing AWB, a bunch of pale white guys from Scotland, perform this live in 1976 as part of their "Soul Searching" tour. You must check out "Soul Searching". They performed live on Soul Train. Check that out as well.
The Average White Bros were the best. I got that album with Cut the Cake, and I was hooked. This goes back to when the funk was fire, alive and well across the board: Earth Wind and Fire, Sly and the Family Stone, Zapp, Ohio Players, Tower of Power, Kool and the Gang, Wild Chery ... That is a deep rabbit hole WELL worth the time to explore.
This song broke things out of that disco era to me. In high school we’d do “the Bump” to this which was considered quite provocative for the times unless it it was a house party! 😂 such a funkyass grove! That bass is just nasty!!
AWB seemingly came out of nowhere laying the funkiest funk down. Thank you, Europe! This isn't just funk. It's FOUWNK! You know the song is funky when everybody does the bobblehead.
Our Scottish funk brother's! Alan Goree and Hammish Stewart got the r&b/soul/funk running through their veins! You can't fake the funk! You either feel it, live it, breath it, or you don't! Definitely ancestral brothers! Steve Ferrone on the drums rounding out the rhythm section! That brother was killin' those skins!
Yes! School Boy Crush! Same funky groove: 'I'm the One' and 'Goin Home' off the 'Soul Searching' LP They used to do shows in their kilts! Back in '74 I was on U of Pittsburgh track team. Our hurdler, J.C. Floyd did overnights at WAMO FM, the "Urban Contemporary" station in town. My friends and I picked up a copy of this at the local store, gave to J.C. and said you've GOT to listen to these guys. That night, 'Pick up the Pieces' hit the airwaves dedicated to Pitt track! Where we (couple of white guys) responsible for AWB's success? Nah. A good story, though! Love you guys!
@@susanmurray7654 it’s weird! My wife’s family are Scott’s (first and 2nd Gen immigrants) I have to say, they are the LEAST funky people on earth! Peace
Beautiful choice my brothers. I was always a funk freak. Enjoy the trip. Funk till you drop. Hang on tight P.S. loved the To Short and Rahkim reference You brother are still unrivaled.
Scottish funk with such a nasty groove. Glad you reacted to the studio version. The production on their songs is superb. Now check out another side of AWB with If I Ever Lose This Heaven and A Love Of Your Own. This group does it all!
Hey fellas from Ned in Spain. Yeah..OH YEAH this is a B-O-M-B ! As you and others have stated they were Scottish and White but when their original drummer died just after Pick Up the Pieces they got Steve Ferrone, a Black drummer from Brighton UK who played with Bloodstone. He's played in the studio and live with many many top tier bands and orchestras of all styles ever since.
Steve Ferrone on drums! When Tom Petty was auditioning for a new drummer in 1994 - supposedly when Ferrone walked into the room half the drummers grabbed their gear and left. Maybe that is a legend - but I’d believe it none-the-less. He’s soooo good. Let this be my request for you to try some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
LOL, head bobbing immediately! Yessir, these guys are as white and as Scottish as you can get and yet had the funk and groove mastered way back in the 70’s. Loved this reaction. Try “Cut the Cake” too, or anything from that LP. Thanks guys 👍
I was hooked on AWB when I first heard "Pick Up the Pieces" on the radio in 1974. I couldn't WAIT to get to the record store to buy it. Fast forward to 2007. My daughter left for college in Atlanta and took that record with her. I doubt I'll ever see it again, but it's okay. At least I know it's in good hands. Her generation and yours will keep good music alive. I don't listen to any other reactors but you. You're the best!
OHHHH, YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! SO FUNKY!!! They were ear-candy for me, back in the 70s!!! THAT FAAAAT BASE.... GLAD you dug it!! HUGS!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, they have more jams and they are still performing! I saw them around 2018 and they turned it OUT! I'm 64 and I was 15 when this came out and we are still jamming with them💃💃💃
I said it back in the 90's when I first discovered who they were after already knowing "Pick up the Pieces" was one of the funkiest songs ever recorded, I said it after discovering all their other hits and I will say it today. One of the unsolved mysteries in music history is how a band this damn funky could come from Scotland. To this very day it baffles me. These are some bad boys tho and fact that they are not in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame makes my head hurt. It's criminal.
!!!! It’s 3:30 am. Got up to let my cat in. Thought I’d see what you had in store! AWB !!!! Listened 3 times!! Now you gotta hear Person to Person. Welcome to some of the best funk on the planet!!!
Was waiting for the day you would hit this one, I knew it would blow you away! Sometimes they even wear kilts onstage when they perform. NOT at all Average! Thanks so much for all you do!
One of my favorite 70's bands! OG's of blue-eyed soul. You have to react to them live. There are 2 songs from them live at montreux 1977. "A love of your own" & "Person to Person"
AWB is so funky, this is my favorite jam of theirs. I saw them in 75 with the Commadores and LTD. On a side not the it drummer Steve Ferrar when an and played drums for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. AWB has a collection of funk.
If yall gonna go AWB, listen to "A Love of Your Own," "Queen of My Soul," "Im The One," and "Soul Searchin." In a nutshell, listen to every song they ever made!!!! Some bad boys outta Scotland!!!!!
Growing up in Canada during this time, I couldn't not Love the Funk. I still have a Vintage Mint Vinyl Album of the Average White Band, {the White Album}. Through them I found Motown. 🎶✌👉🇨🇦
FINALLY....MY JAM...This jam is the biggest wormhole in your brain...rent-free for the rest of your days. At one time it was THE most sampled cut. I bartended in a beach club in the 70's and when this came on, I was dancing in a trance. It always knocks me out. It's like an old friend. And that's not a tambourine, it's sleigh bells! George & Parl/Funk matches this deep groove with "Night of the Thumpasaurus People"...a longer !ooser jam but the same hard unforgettable trance. Saw both bands live.. They deliver everything you need.
OK usually my White Ass knows the OG before the sample, but I heard this and was like “Microphone Fiend!” Rakim spitting bars over that funky ass loop. 🔥
Drummer Steve Ferrine is one if the best and has played with everyone including beungbtge drummer for Tom Petty until his passing. He's revered and it's easy to see why when you hear the groove on the AWB recordings. Cut the Cake, Work to Do, of course Pick-up the Pieces all great tunes. Can't go wrong with any AWB records
I’d like to recommend another British band who’ll surprise you with all the funk that oozes from their music. Down to the Bone. Some of their best songs are: Black Choice, Sound as a Pound, Cellar Funk, The Zodiac, Searching for a Simple Groove and A Touch of Voodoo.
Love AWB, ever since I was a kid. Check out these songs from their Person to Person live album: Person to Person(for more fantastic bass) Cut the Cake(slower and groovier than their studio version. Probably the best version of the song) Cloudy(way better than their studio cut of the song. It sounds completely original! Hamish(pronounced Hey-mish) really hits those high notes!)
I just sat here chuckling watching you two. I wonder if you guys needed neck massages after that with all that funk that just kept hitting you. I hope you went and googled it on UA-cam after you listen to this. Soul train had them live and they were just as funky
Great reaction, gentlemen! AWB got some great funky grooves, loved them since the 70s. Check out ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ and ‘Cut the Cake’ thanks as always
I suggest you listen to Love Your Life from the album Soul Searching. You should check out Person to Person, Got The Love and their cover of The Isley's Work to Do from their self titled 1974 album. This is the album with probably their biggest pop hit, the mostly instrumental Pick Up The Pieces. I would also suggest Catch Me (Before I Have to Testify) and What Cha' Gonna Do for Me from their Shine album. Chaka Khan covered What Cha' Gonna Do For Me on her album of the same name. If you're interested in some ballads I suggest A Love of Your Own (Soul Searching), Cloudy (the version from their live album Person to Person), For You, For Love and If Love Only Lasts for One Night (Shine). The instrument that you thought was a tambourine is actually sleigh bells played by their second drummer, the great Steve Ferrone. (The only black member of the group and the only Brit. The rest of the band is Scottish.) He replaced the late great Robbie McIntosh who died tragically after the release of the 1974 album. AWB were the real deal.
The LEGENDARY Iconic Average White Band
If this groove don’t move you, your soul is gone. About as funky as you can get. One of the best!

There is nothing average about this white band. Thanks for the reaction!
One of the funkiest songs, ever. Nobody thought Sleigh Bells were funky, until this came out. And that bass line.
Lol
We had so many fly white bands in the 70's. We didnt know they were white until they came on the Midnite Special on Saturday nites
It's so crazy these guys are Scottish! The UK bands really took the best inspiration from America and created some iconic music...just wow.

@TheDivayenta Yes there are 2 original members still with the band. The founder/vocals/ bassist Alan Gorrie and Guitar player Onnie MacIntyre.

Steve Ferrone on drums. Those eighth notes on the Christmas jingle bells to open the tune are 🔥🔥🔥! This was one of Prince’s favorite grooves.
"Hey! Wait a minute! Hold on!"😊
The bass just kicks it in this, and the jingle bells... more jingle bells!

Old White lady here - so enjoy your comments, Gentlemen! They are informative, insightful and thought-provoking. Many thanks!
You went straight for the funk jugular bypassing pickin' up the pieces and cuttin' the cake. My favorite AWB song.

When AWB was dropping it and topping it in the '70s on "Cut the Cake" this was THE sh*t...
A crazy underrated band. That baseline reaching back and slapping your mama.
I was looking at AWB wikipedia page and they were discovered by Eric Clapton's tour manager and he helped get them a contract with Atlantic records.
Those are sleigh bells, I believe -- not a tambourine. Great tune. Also check out their version of "Work to Do," and "Person to Person." Very soulful.
Yepper!
