I'm going to preface this and say that I'm not at all taking anything away from Neil when I say this, as I'm a huge NP/Rush fan....but as a drummer, crossovers really aren't hard to do. They look great...they're flashy...it's a real easy way to impress everyone, but they're not at all hard to play. I was 14 years old and saw Neil do them in concert on the Hold Your Fire tour...I was doing them the proficiently the next day after practicing them for about an hour. Getting them up to speed took a few days.

This man was unbelievable, he didn’t even seem human. His drum solos were the pinnecle of every show. I saw them live on every tour since Permenant Waves, 1980 and his drum solos were always incredible, but somehow he topped his own solos each year. The man was already considered the best rock drimmer since their 2112 album, in 1976.
Most musicians would just stay there, but Peart was never happy with his playing, so he had the humility to seek out jazz legend Freddie Gruber for lessons. That was when he began having those Jazz parts towards the end of each solo. Peart was actually triggering those horn sounds himself.

FYI. Neil started this drum solo from ending of the Mystic Rythms, which that song required his back drum kit, that his his electrict drum kit, his percussion board is on his right, then he hits a certain percussion tab to turn the drum kit back to the acaustic side of the kit which is considered his front kit, that he plays a majority of his drums for about 95% of his songs.!!! Any time you see Neil play the drums with the percussion on the left side he is at his front drum kit.!!

Even into his later years, he was still taking lessons from other drummers. He was a sponge of knowledge and always wanted to get “better.” Although he was mostly noted for progressive rock, he was also a huge fan of jazz and swing music (hence the ending of that solo.) Those feet you saw were in ballet shoes. He wore them to get a better “feel” for all the pedals and triggers in his kit. I was only fortunate enough to see Rush live 6 times but every time was unbelievable- and usually after his solos, I felt a little dizzy and had to sit down…

The 'front' half of his kit, where he started off, was electronic/digital, and the back half (when it rotates and he turns around) is the traditional/analog drums. What I've always loved is that as monstrous as that kit is.. not a bit of it is for aesthetics. He used every piece in it, to create these masterpieces.

Neal played a session with Buddy Rich's old band, and also did a drum solo tribute to Buddy Rich as well.

    Pronounced PEERT…
The end is a tribute to Neil’s favorite Drummer-Buddy Rich

It’s pronounced “peert.” As Geddy once put it “ear, with a p in front and a t at the back”

You see lots of fireworks on stage with Neil, but the thing that comes out is just so damn musical. He always plays with phrasing and nuance. He was a great musician who happened to be a drummer. RIP.

Just to let you know, he triggers the horns with the electronic pads. I have no idea how he remembers which pads to hit. He's a genius!

He was way into his career when he reached out to a drumming teacher who taught him the overhand/underhand technique. That snare part in the middle was likely a tribute to that teaching.

He did have two kicks, he’s definitely one of the greats. The big band sound was homage to Buddy Rich, one of Neals greatest influences.

You need to watch the Xanadu live Exit Stage Left tour from Montreal in 1981. He plays much more than just the drums in it. It is an amazing video to watch all 3 of them play such a complex composition.
