He didn't say she became his mother he said "but you turned into a lover and mother, what a lover you wore me out" Rod Stewart initially was the singer for legendary guitarist Jeff Beck's band.
Yes, but it's still obviously about an older woman who was just using him. "The morning sun when it's in your face clearly shows your age". "All you did was wreck my bed, and in the morning kick me in the head. Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore. "
This song is from the album "Every picture tells a story". The title track is an excellent example of Rod and his band really rocking out. Nothing like his later soft rock, and something I recommend if you want to explore that side of his catalogue. This was hugely popular back in the day.
Maggie May was everywhere in late summer and into the fall in 1971 as I started my freshman year of college. The whole Every Picture Tells A Story album is great and is another one from the amazing year of music 1971. This album has remained in my top 10 favorite records of all time.
An all-time classic. The mandolin near the end adds so much to the song. Great, natural, believable storytelling by Rod The Mod. This is likely his best known and certainly most played radio song. This is the era when Rod was rockin'. My two other favourite songs of his are Tonight's The Night and the pure rocker Stay With Me with his previous band The Faces.
I am a huge Rush , Stones , Zepplin , Queen fan but Rod offered another side of greatness growing up ohhh my , That I never turned off and a great rabbit hole , One of the best live performers. Ever , You can do any live song and look out , 🥰
When Rod was in The Faces they were known as a "pub rock" band. Hard drinking, girls and football ( soccer) was their thing and they played to the pub sensibilities 9f Britain at the time. They made some banging rock tunes at the time too. Check out "Stay With Me" "Pool Hall Richard" ot "Cindy Incidentally " by them.
I am by no means a Rod fan, but I can certainly appreciate a good song. This is one of them. Another is The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II). It does upset me though when people think of him when you mention the song Downtown Train. Makes me want to scream "NO! TOM FVCKING WAITS!" 🤣
Great reaction. Rod's first 4 albums are truly great records. Very different from what came after... check out "I Know I'm Losing You" by Rod, same album as this song. You'll dig it
Great song. I was only in my 20s when this came out. Rod is the bomb. A year or two ago, he went out and filled the potholes in front of his home, which didn't please the street dept., but hey, they didn't do it. Imagine a rock star filling pot holes! He is just amazing. ❤
Rod has so many hits. I think the first song of his I heard was I was only joking which I think you guys would enjoy too 😉 Great reaction Peace out guys ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
On the radio, they never play the acoustic intro, they just go right into the song. At least that's what I remembered when I used to listen to the radio.
6 @@morrisgautreau6704 i like it without.. its not really connected to the song.. and the song has got a little more punch w/o it.. its one of the few songs that work in a shorter version
@@stevendoran877 It has been a long while since I listened to the radio, I honestly can't remember if it was AM or FM, it was most certainly the station that did not play the intro.
@morrisgautreau6704 I hear about the radio lol. I was a freshman in college when this came out, and the FM station I listened to always played the intro
I love this song, great reaction guys. I'm sure you know some of his super hits Da Ya Think I'm Sexy, Sailing, Baby Jane. My personal favorite is Downtown Train, a super song. Rod Stewart is a guy well loved in Europe. In the football (soccer) World Cups, when Scotland used to qualify (not for a long time now), he was always one of the stars of the tournaments because of his legendary parties and attending every Scotland game. Really a lovable character.
That was one of my personal favorites to your reactions to any music. Its hard to not feel it, but there was something that was really honest to your reactions to this one. For me. Thanks for being humans with me.
So funny, growing up one of my friend’s mom’s would always listen to Rod Stewart and Michael Bolton so we knew a lot of their stuff. 😂 easy listening love songs. Can’t imagine I’ll ever request any but I’ll def be singing along.
Rod is also short for Rodney, as in Rodney Dangerfield. Rod Stewart is a legend over here in the U.K., big all over the world though. You should check out some of his interviews..he has a brilliant sense of humour, and is a lovely person. Big Fan here. The song "Sailing" is an absolute must listen.. Hot Legs, Young Turks, Forever Young, The first cut is the deepest are all insane bangers. Enjoy. Love your channel guys, you have a nice community.❤
He was not only sucsessful by his own, he wrote a ton of hits for other musicians and bands. for a long time he was one of thest earning musicians in the world
Great reaction! Rod Stewart is not my favorite artist by a stretch but THIS has been one of my all time favorite songs since I was a kid. It actually gets more meaningful to me with age (45). It was the first song I learned to play on mandolin when I was 15
I was 10 when this came out and it played ALL the time. When I had my daughter at 23 years old, named her Meghann, but we called her, and still call her, Maggie May. Also, I can't hear Sir Rod Stewart without thinking of Roger Taylor in Queen. Roger's voice is always compared to Sir Rod's... not sure if it goes the other way around. Love love love this song... and choosing the song with the guitar intro? Chef's kiss!
Fun Fact: The name "Maggie May" does not appear in the song; Rod borrowed the title from "Maggie Mae," a Liverpool folk song about a Lime Street prostitute that the Beatles included on their Let It Be album. Stewart liked the play on words the title created, sometimes introducing the song by saying, "This is 'Maggie May' - sometimes she did, sometimes she didn't."
@NeverTrustGhost another fun fact about Rod Stewart (indirectly). When Rod Stewart left Jeff Beck's band, a young Steven Tyler (who i believe was still going by his birth name Tallarico) wanted to audition. So he gathered up a bunch of local musicians and recorded demo tapes to send in. He didn't get the gig, but liked the group he gathered for the demos and they became Aerosmith.
Great vibes on this one, I love that the requests are moving to different genres of rock, it makes it less predictable and exciting. Still waiting for my DR. John request but enjoying the videos in the meantime, the mowing my carpet line made me chuckle
I used to be In the car w the radio on all the time when i was young and i remember songs starting in 1967. 60yrs old now...and i figure ive heard over 15,000 unique songs..Maggie May has settled in at no. 3 behind 1.Reelin in the Years..2.Beginnings..this old Italian dude at a restaurant my family and i went to a lot could PLAY over 15,000 songs. Sadly he passed.... on the guitar..and learned the accordion it
1990 something Murfreesboro TN. We were sitting 4th row ( me and my mom and dad) I was shocked as he came down from stage and started a conga line with my mom hanging on to him they went all over the venue!
Oh wow I love this song, what a nice surprise from you guys! Rod Stewart was a major sex symbol when I was a kid, I recognized that album cover from one in my mom's collection, so many great songs to choose from if you guys decide to do more, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? is a really fun one I think you would like, or Hot Legs 😎🖤✌
I can highly reccommend the killing of Georgey boy parts 1 and 2 by Rod Stewart, a breakthrough song for gay rights in the 70's.and a really good song.
Good video guys! Rod Stewart was one of the best Blues singers at the time, 1968-1972. He sang on Jeff Beck's album Truth. His version of Willie Dixon's You Shook Me is out of this world. None of the tracks were close to Soft Rock.
This was Rod at his best. I always wondered if the words "Or find myself a rock & roll band, that needs a helping hand" was a reference to when he was recruited by Python Lee Jackson to record one song, "In a Broken Dream", because their singer didn't think his own voice suited the song.
lol! 😂 I always get a laugh session with y’all’s reactions. Listen to some songs from The Faces, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood (pre Rolling Stones) band . Pure RocknRoll✌🏽🇺🇸
Thanks for this, guys. A shame the REAL Rod Stewart--the BLUE-EYED SOUL ROD STEWART--should come as a surprise to so many people now, seeing his early work is his BEST work and the reason anyone paid attention to him throughout the 70s and 80s. Again, thanks.
When it comes to real Rock n Roll always check out the Greatest Classic Rock first the 60's, 70's and 80's...... after that Rock just wasn't the same any more it was all metal, grung and thrash trash
One of my all time favorite songs. This is on ny desert island playlist. Great story, great vocals, and that mandolin....He was also in Faces. Check out their song Oh La La which was sung by Ron Wood I believe.

Growing up in the 70’s, Rod was a favorite and so is this song. A classic to me!
One of my favorite bands is Faces.
He didn't say she became his mother he said "but you turned into a lover and mother, what a lover you wore me out" Rod Stewart initially was the singer for legendary guitarist Jeff Beck's band.
Mother was definitely short for Motherf**ker.😆
Yep, python lee Jackson, in a broken dream was the first time I ever heard him ❤
imho his best vocals are on the Truth album
Yes, but it's still obviously about an older woman who was just using him. "The morning sun when it's in your face clearly shows your age". "All you did was wreck my bed, and in the morning kick me in the head. Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore. "
As a little kid I always misheard this lyric as "wet" my bed😅
I didn't realize it until my 30's😂
The mandolin break that ruled the world.

Fantastic album and especially love the song "Every Picture Tells a Story".
For me it was my senior year of college. This album dominated the whole year. So many bangers and great ballads. It's still on my playlist.
Yup, fall of freshman year, cheerleading for football, this song was the soundtrack.

Hit #1 in both the UK and the US the week it was released.
Wish I had a dollar for everytime I heard this one on the radio back then lol.
Saw him in concert in the 90s and he kicked soccer balls into the crowd and he hit the top seats

Rod Stewart did a banging cover of the Motown classic "I know I'm losing You". I saw them in concert early 70s, Fleetwood Mac opened for them. 👍👍👍
