If you see what he did at 2:57, I noticed him doing this in a couple other videos. I just fixed my problem because I figured out why he did this. I had a carbon (soot) buildup where the nozzle shoots fuel into the firebox on my hot air furnace. I had just had a service on my furnace because it would run about 20 seconds and kick off. The service company blamed everything but what they were doing. The replaced the nozzle, the CAD, etc. but they were blaming my chimney when they couldn't fix it. That's when I realized, he's knocking out any buildup where the igniters and nozzle go. In my case, the CAD could not "see" flame, and was kicking off. I just knocked a screwdriver in the cavity and the buildup was gone, and my furnace works great. Just so you know why he's doing that in his videos.
@@donlane2610 just so you know, my furnace is still working great. When I pulled my burner unit out. There was a build up all around the round area. Since it was dark and the soot buildup was black, you didn't notice. I thought to myself, "the only thing I haven't tried is rattling a screwdriver around the opening like that guy does". Now I know why. The buildup was right in front of the CAD unit and couldn't see flame, and dud what it was supposed to, shut down. Good luck
You saved my family a lot of money. I do the basic maintenance on my Weil- McLain boiler. This week I changed the nozzle, pump screen and oil filter, plus replaced the pressure regulator and air eliminator (both rusty). After this the burner would not start...couldn't find the problem. Watched a lot of your videos and some others...tried a few things, but no power. I called a local company to fix it. For an $80 service call fee, he diagnosed the problem as the Cad cell relay ignition box, and wanted $941 to make the repair. I said no...went to the local supply house and bought one for $50, put it in, and still no power. I went back to the videos and I kept noticing in some of yours the T-T loop (my old box didn't have T-T connectors)...I tried it and the burner works great. Thanks for your videos.
I am a tech here in the UK and watch your videos quite often, I find the control of those Beckett burners strange. Our burners have very specific steps in the ignition sequence, when first powered they run only the fan for around 10 seconds to purge the boiler and remove potential fumes (negating an explosion from occurring), then they open the oil solenoid and at the same time the HT igniter is operated for around 10 seconds and the photocell is bypassed, when the igniter is turned off the photocell is brought into the scene and must see light to keep the burner firing, should the photocell see dark or fail then the control box will shut everything off and turn on the lock-out light which requires human intervention to resume operation.
There's no easy answer here. Great video. We all run into a stumper once in a while. You worked the problem and it paid off. Baby the fashionable orange coat Florida dog.
Good job Steve. Sometimes you have an ass kicker of job, especially when it's electrical. I had a bad protector relay on one of my furnaces a few years back, kept tripping out at night and then happened more often, during the day a few times too. Sucked going out to a cold shop. Changed it out and problem went away.
Nice work Steve. Intermittent problems are the WORST on any kind of equipment. Everything always seems to work great right when your staring at it! I'd rather walk in to a completely dead system..., easy as pie! Lol.

The motor finally failed. Good catch. I hate those intermittent failures. It took me a couple days to find an intermittent furnace door safety switch. It would only fail after a couple hours running while I was at work.
+1, reset problem we call this. Always on a call if the problem doesn't show it self to me right away I turn the burner on/off with the aquastat, over and over, sometimes 20 times or so. Until I'm satisfied the motors starting switch is good and the relay is good as well. Also this would never be the case had that been a riello!
+M Bet for the most part i have good luck with beckett but there is that one time maybe one a year that can be a problem .trips out once a week when your not there .
Hey steve. Nice video. I'm on Long Island and have been at it for 24 yrs. not shore if you blew back fuel line,if it's rest cited the oil will cavitate. Foam up inside pump. I cause that air in pump. And will go off on safety.but when you started it and it just buzzed That was a dead spot in the motor. When that happens I ck orange from 8184g to look for 120 if you have 120 then it's bad motor. So think you got it. Also while burner is running you can ck ohms on the F F. terminal on 8184g relay. I like to see under 800 ohms. Let's me know the cad cell is seeing flame properly. Nice job keepem coming.
I was thinking the same thing, see the 120 before condemning the motor. That flexible coupler looked nasty too,. Shotgun method is ok unless you have to return again, then they loose confidence. It didn't fail till the relay was banged around a bit. I think that helped reveal the real problem. And hey, spring for a new gauge! 😄 We all get Hesse, it depends on the understanding of the customer. Mike A tech instructor I met that uses a Testo and computer to adjust his settings told me the O2 was more critical than the co2. Shoot for 5.5

The hard part while working on the Becky is stooping for an extended time without using a small bench. The next day the back reminds me of the stress I put on it the previous day. Our Becky is 22 years old - I change the nozzle and filter and clean the electrodes and say a little prayer. Sure enjoy your informative videos. PS: Wish the fire box was insulated with thin bricks instead of that fluffy compound that falls into the path of the flame causing starting issues when it starts burning.
Mines keeps doing the same thing Steve i change the primary control i chang the electrodes new tip a good cleaning and from time to time it trips but it only trips when its trying to restart again once its starts it will run fine only when it trys to start it will trip seems like the igniter is intermittent i dont no i did the spart test seems like a decent spark im clueless I just order the suntec filter and gasket and I also bought a psi gauge tester to see if its at a 100 psi or something
Out of curiosity why don't you habitually check cad cell readings when doing trouble calls? I've encountered many weak or bad cad cells causing what I refer to as nuisance lockouts. Not a slam just a curiosity. Enjoy the videos!

Steve. I’m have the same issue with Becker AFll 100. Start up clean. Runs for a few minutes them the fire sound erratic and shut off. I’ve had time where it runs for a month, week then some times just a few minutes. Can’t figure it out
Nice Video. I really appreciate your efforts. I think, it was not the motor. Motor does not have any feedback system (in this case). It is connected through a relay switch, which means worse case scenario it would stay off so will the transformer and the valve since they are all connected though a single relay with no feedback(one and the only feed back this system has is a cad switch). Best guess that was just low operating voltage (input) at the relay switch.
You show in the video good oil flow but you didnt check the pressure wondering if that could be an added problem some burners require different pressures did I miss something

@loneranger482002 anything over 3.2 ohms is a flat spot? That’s odd because I have a motor the finally stopped and I whacked it and it started again and it was reading 3.5 but I decided to ohm test the new motor and it was like 5.4-6 so how can it be anything over 3.2?
How can I run the the furnace after had been trying several times without getting the flame on. I am afraid there can be some extra oil on the combustion chamber. What should I do to be safe???
Without removing the burner and bench-testing it, I am afraid such a situation as Steve encountered is a matter of replacing parts or installing a new unit. Been there, done that!
This is a long shot, I've got a similar model Beckett, It keeps having intermittent issues, it will start up run for a bit, shut off and then just short cycle, (turns on for 15 seconds or so blows out air then shuts off) and just keeps repeating, due to where I live no one around here works on these things(Floor furnace). I've pulled the filter, the nozzle, made sure they were all clean and even pulled something next to the solenoid and made sure it was clean, I cannot figure out this issue and it's driving me nuts, any thoughts on what it even could be? the motor doesn't seem to get hot and spins freely, I made sure the gap was right on the electrodes with a gauge( and cleaned them). Any tips or insight at all would be sincerely appreciated I'm just trying to keep the heat running for my family at this point.

I say the house is haunted and a poltergeist is loose in the basement. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a ghost of an electrician or steamfitter. I say get the Ouija Board out of the truck, better yet, bring the dog in the house to sniff out that saboteur ghost.. FYI Ghosts are afraid of reindeer via their supernatural powers of flight and are also hooked-up with Santa. The dog is the key for this service call.
Call backs are nightmares of techs! So the main problem was the pump right? Because, you changed the blower motor then you went back, and change the pump as well? That pump was pumping 140 psi right? so maybe thermal overload was tripping after awhile? Tough repair Steve.
+Guy Hakverdi all original parts . mutipul issues on this one .i did not change anything that i did not think needed changing . calls like this one can be tough it runs great for a week or so then the call by the time you get there the reset has been reset and running fine
If I could go back in time I'd say "Clean the nozzle back plate, it's so dirty the CAD cell can't always see the reflection of the fire and thinks it's gone out". Oh well, that was 3 years ago!
Hate to see the bill you sent her because you replaced pretty much everything. Watching this was like watching a dealership mechanic work. They can't figure out what the issue is and they just start replacing everything at the owners expense in hopes of getting it repaired. I just call them replacement mechanics. I never even one time seen you pull a multi meter out at check current to the igniter or motor or pump or what amps they are pulling. You just said "well this is old so it might be the problem".
I dont know what kind of dealerships you go to but intermittent problems are a bitch. You can only go by what you find at that point and time and go from there. We dont have magic wands like you apparently.
Anybody know what I might be experiencing? My oil furnace has been tripping recently after running too frequently. Had a guy come out and look at it, first time he replaced nozzle and primary control, and still had a problem. Next day he replaced filter and screen. Still had a problem. I was looking up and down and decided I'd have a go at replacing the transformer myself, which I did. Still have a problem. Before it trips, there will be a hum for about a minute, either it will call for heat or trip. After I let it sit for an hour or so, it will run normally. Then after a few cycles, happens again.
Centrifugal start switch in the motor aborted mission I would bet. I hear spark every time the power switch is closed, that tips me off that the protector relay is "ok", (but good it was changed, the contacts probably took a shit kicking breaking locked rotor current of the motor.)
No amp draw test?? was the fan moving freely? Was there voltage to the motor? "if I can't find anything wrong I'm just going to change the motor" Guess you found nothing wrong huh?? Hell why not change the pump while your at it bub?? You are a hack indeed! Now that I think of it that boiler is pretty old, might just as well change the poiler.....parts changer!!
But he DID find it..cycled it on and off until the problem occured..the motor was obviously bad..no need to test it. If you work on enough motorized equipment, regardless of what it is, you know when you have an obvious bad motor and who cares what the ohms or amps are. Change out the motor and get the unit up and running.
The hum when the motor didn't start should have told you something straight away. Either oil pump stiffened up or motor bearings should be checked by manually turning. If they're smooth and easy then look for failing start capacitor then check the motor starting torque. Motor bearings are a common failure but if you change them make sure to use sealed, high temperature type.

How did he test that to find out? I just bought a new one last year and now i think its broken again because its doing the same thing

I think you got it Steve, I had a bad cad cell, That would work for a day or two, and then trip out. Took me three trips to find it.

My first thought was the CAD cell ( flame sensor) not recognizing the flame or CAD relay. I guess it was motor and relay.
Those intermittent problems are the worst. I have had those many times, and tough to diagnose.

Think it calls for a 51771U, failed in less than two years after replacement.
Call backs are nightmares of techs! So the main problem was the pump right? Because, you changed the blower motor then you went back, and change the pump as well? That pump was pumping 140 psi right? so maybe thermal overload was tripping after awhile? Tough repair Steve.
+Guy Hakverdi all original parts . mutipul issues on this one .i did not change anything that i did not think needed changing . calls like this one can be tough it runs great for a week or so then the call by the time you get there the reset has been reset and running fine

Not if it locks the burner.
Could it had just been a dirty cad cell ?
Dont think so because if it was cad cell issues. It would fire up until lockout time was achieved then would shut its self off. Maximum of 45 seconds
I had bad relay solder joints on the controller in two places within a month.
If I could go back in time I'd say "Clean the nozzle back plate, it's so dirty the CAD cell can't always see the reflection of the fire and thinks it's gone out". Oh well, that was 3 years ago!

Hate to see the bill you sent her because you replaced pretty much everything. Watching this was like watching a dealership mechanic work. They can't figure out what the issue is and they just start replacing everything at the owners expense in hopes of getting it repaired. I just call them replacement mechanics. I never even one time seen you pull a multi meter out at check current to the igniter or motor or pump or what amps they are pulling. You just said "well this is old so it might be the problem".
I dont know what kind of dealerships you go to but intermittent problems are a bitch. You can only go by what you find at that point and time and go from there. We dont have magic wands like you apparently.

Anybody know what I might be experiencing? My oil furnace has been tripping recently after running too frequently. Had a guy come out and look at it, first time he replaced nozzle and primary control, and still had a problem. Next day he replaced filter and screen. Still had a problem. I was looking up and down and decided I'd have a go at replacing the transformer myself, which I did. Still have a problem. Before it trips, there will be a hum for about a minute, either it will call for heat or trip. After I let it sit for an hour or so, it will run normally. Then after a few cycles, happens again.

Centrifugal start switch in the motor aborted mission I would bet. I hear spark every time the power switch is closed, that tips me off that the protector relay is "ok", (but good it was changed, the contacts probably took a shit kicking breaking locked rotor current of the motor.)

But he DID find it..cycled it on and off until the problem occured..the motor was obviously bad..no need to test it. If you work on enough motorized equipment, regardless of what it is, you know when you have an obvious bad motor and who cares what the ohms or amps are. Change out the motor and get the unit up and running.

The hum when the motor didn't start should have told you something straight away. Either oil pump stiffened up or motor bearings should be checked by manually turning. If they're smooth and easy then look for failing start capacitor then check the motor starting torque. Motor bearings are a common failure but if you change them make sure to use sealed, high temperature type.
