Always appreciate your videos. We had a new furnace put in 10 years ago and it was nothing but trouble from day one as well. After multiple company’s and a lot of headaches we finally found someone really knowledgeable to get it running right. Your knowledge and videos are really appreciated and helped us make some more educated decisions with the system.
Based on watching several similar videos, i was able to fix my own oil burner that would not start....even when 2 other "pros" could not. I feel many are just in the business to replace. I've gone from fearing oil burners to appreciating their simplicity and generally standard and affordable parts.
Old post, but you’re absolutely right. Combustion lining deteriorates, “pro” says new boiler. The plate for aqua stat has a leak, “pro” says new boiler. If you can find a guy working in his own business like i think steve does. You’ll get a good service. But as you can tell, ive started despising these “pros”. I just do it myself anymore.
3 things that i have a problem with in this video. 1-Never change the degree of nozzel or spray pattern without checking with the manufacturer. 2-Always check pump pressure when changing nozzel gpms. 3- Always use a combustion analyzer. A few percentage points in efficiency is a big deal now. You CANNOT set a burner by eyesight.
Don't forget you can't just move the burner head that much. Zero the head and re-adjust to Beckett spec. Dropping the firing rate that much is probably under firing the boiler which can create it's own problems.
I would've varied fuel.flow at bleeder..then tested for hi flow after prepurge...check pump press. Look at table to get max gph. Compute by pump press. I thought that model takes 70 degree. Burner should say
I have a Beckett in my Aqua Hot. It fouled nozzles quickly and had a wet chamber. I determined it was the high temp cutoff switch short cycling at cutoff. I'm now in my second season without issue. What a pleasure - Now it's time to do my annual service while it's still running perfectly. 🙂 I've learned so much from your videos - THANKS!!
July 24, 2023 what the lol did you steal the DeLorean time machine from back to the future 😆 love the new truck and glad to see ya working again Steve. From your viewer Jason in Orlando, Florida. And I don't miss the winters when I lived in Michigan.
Then there's me thinking it was that, "FLUX Capacitor that was really the Problem...Mind you last year my Service Engineer serviced our Boiler in our Rental Property, he actually like Steve changed the Nozzle to a smaller Nozzle, cleaned all the Combustion Baffles, trimmed and dialed in the Air Fuel Ratio while there also replaced the Motor Capacitor, and the replaced that Variable Boiler temperature Thermostat as those pervious Tenants had been swinging off same for a pastime , and the Boiler Temperature would just really ramp up and the High Temperature Cut off would trip, and 'Lock out' the Boiler, like STEVE my Service Guy mentioned the Idea of fitting a really Larger Expansion Vessel to Protect the System, which we went for, due both the Size of the Boiler and also the number of Hydronic Radiators fitted in out Property...STEVE is Correct saying to those Two Helicopters ," If it was Easy ... you would be doing it" ... Great Upload Steve..." Good enough for this Neighbourhood.."
I had the same problem with my home furnace. The transformer was too weak to start the furnace only intermittently, but it was strong enough to set me on my ass while I was testing it....! Ouch.😵💫.. Changed out to a new one and it runs smooth now. Nice job Steve.
I remember, in my youth as a boilermaker, having to do oil to natural gas conversions, they were usually quick change outs, but some were real nightmares. Keep on keeping the trade alive brother!
@Sean Embry yes, in the 90s in the pacific northwest there was a push to convert every possible oil burning furnace and boiler to natural gas, so the made a shit ton of burner conversions, and some worked well, but most did what they were designed to do, heat just long enough to force the owners into new equipment.
If the spark gap is to wide (5mm) max the transformer has to work to hard to make the spark jump and it starts to weaken the transformer.before I retired when I was servicing and repairing oil boilers I always checked the gap.
Primary control was in hard lockout. All you had to do was hold the red button down for 45 seconds and it resets. Also, if you had a genesys contractor tool, you can program the length of time on the pre-purge, post purge.
thank you! i have a few parts from buying up stuff, trying to save on doing it myself and i have a transformer from older unit i will check cuz i bought it new 80.00 when first learning i should just but a newer burner, now from this video i might be able to service it and get it up and running after swapping out parts and setting my electrode tips right, i will play with air flow but in the past had a friend set it for draft because of smelling exhaust in the house, i can always mark the setting and put it back, I do not have the tools to check flow but i did see 5 lbs of crap that looked like rusted leaves in the heat tubes, i could not belive it! but i tried to not service my burner for many years and now will keep a log tag and date. was told if not set up or maintained the oil goes up the chimney unefficient because of it so anyone that cant work on these needs a burner contract for sure
Gotta love those oil burners. Switched over to a vertical Roth tank a few years back. Had to bleed the pump several times a week. Added a check valve and modified the pump with a return line same problem. Went backntoba sinhle line but added a Tiger Loop. Never another problem.

On Thursday my 50 year old commonwealth gas conversion burner died the boiler was 75 years old the tech jumped a switch got it running but the house didn't get above 55 on Friday morning at 10 am I got the proposal quote for a replacement and by 4 pm it was all done I was extremely lucky and happy
I noticed you never looked down the blast tube to see if there was any build up there and you didn't test the photo cell to to see if was dirty or checked on a meter to see if it had a good signal other then that you were thorough.
It seems like the smaller transformers with the curved top fail quick. I had one like that and it was changed for the large square one, and it never had a spark problem again.
I had a "five-star" company "senior tech" come in to repair my very old Coleman furnace last year. He screwed it up big time! My new tech found that the plastic new-fangled electronic igniter that they replaced my copper-core transformer with was incompatible with old furnaces due to grounding problems. Steve is right-on about electronic ignitors! One problem with HVAC techs is that often, they start the job on "first string" with a "90 day wonder" training program. It is like the training hospital who gets a surgical intern to practice heart surgery on the patient, substituting for the the consulting senior surgeon. The best techs have first, performed a year or two APPRENTICESHIP under direct supervision of an experienced lead man who knows the trade!
ED, what is the oil used? like kerosene or light fuel oil? sounds like different viscosities of fuel oil, we burnt everything at papermill from frenchfry oil to no. 6 fuel oil to diesel to turpentine oil. anything to make steam, we even burnt black liquor made from chemicals and pine tree oil. most oils have to be heated to proper temp to burn well.

Both the apartment I first lived in, and the house I bought a year ago, had 90s models in them, both ran fine.
The acorn nut is only used for setting your “Z” dimension or 0 setting , then the 5/16” nut is used to set your firing position on a Beckett AFG with a variable head L or V for your current firing rate . Also you need to check pump pressure it is mission critical on todays burners for proper combination and smooth operation . Can bet you lunch your gonna be scraping carbon from that retention head and throttle ring in six months

Great job. A shade tree plumber would have changed the pump and solenoid .Rolled the dice and pray for no comeback .Big nozzle will keep the oil company at your house.
looking at how blue/yellow/long/short/rolling the flame is. the delay is to stop the burner spunking too much oil into the chamber, with no ignition the fuel just sits there

Got a boiler pretty similar to this one, and am having issues. The boiler will go into lockout. I have to reset it, and just slightly open the bleeder at the pump for a second and it will have about a seconds worth of air, and then it will shoot fuel and start right up. Any ideas? I just moved here and need to replace the fuel filter, that may have not been replaced in years.
