Do yourself a favor. Do whatever you can to make it to their show. It will blow your mind and youll likely be part of history as their retirement is coming soon. They dont see America much because of past issues with the law. But as you already mentioned in the videos production value is high. Experience it, Enjoy it. Its an unforgettable experience even for non fans.

Never underestimate their lyrics, "Du Hast" is one of the few songs that has not many lyrics, but some songs of them are lyrical masterpieces, Till has such a special way to use words.
In many cases, you can only understand it when you speak German (I'm a German), the translation of Tills lyrics into English doesnt always work cause the use of words is too special.

True, it really shows that Till's lyrics are deeply rooted in german culture and very inspired by the mood of german romanticism.
      He's definitely a poet.

Regarding the lyrics: You really have to dig deeper into the Rammstein-catalogue - and, as a bonus, have a really good grasp of the German language - to appreciate the genius of the lyrics. The simplicity you mentioned is merely a very cleverly used stylistic device that usually transports a way deeper meaning and, due to the additional usage of countless metaphors/ references to literature and culture and plays on words, allows countless interpretations. This stuff simply gets lost in translation. Btw, Till is actually a well respected poet in Germany.

I guess the main attraction to Rammstein is a number of things. Their riffs, obviously. Their shows, the pyrotechnics, obviously. Tills voice. Their sense of humor. The lyrics are brilliant (in German, they do not translate that well into English, and tbh, German fits this music way better than English), they're funny, disturbing, and sometimes absolutely beautiful. Their music makes you want to move. They sound completely unique. And they like to stir things up. Never a dull moment with Rammstein ;-)

"Du hast" (you have) and "Du hasst" (you hate)is a pun. Until to the part "Du hast mich" (you hate me) everyboby (in German language) think "you hate me" but then he says "Du hast mich gefragt" and from that time it means "you have asked me" It is about a wedding. "You have asked me and I said nothing" (Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt)

the refrain "willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein für alle Tage? NEIN!" in "Du hast" means "Do you want to be faithful until death devides you? NO!" it's the question the pastor askes you if you want to get married with a person. and at the end of the song (its on 3:19 on the original video version)if u listen closely the play of words hits sneaky (and hard): cuz then he sings just for one line "willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen? NEIN!" which means "do you want to love her until the death of her vagina even in bad days? NO!". and its hardly to hear in the first place even for a german native because of "scheidet= devides" and "Scheide=vagina" sounds very similiar....and my interpretion of this harsh line is that when the partner gets old and withered and isnt as beautiful as in younger years the sex isnt good any more and you just break up/divorce. i think its an overall critic on the marriage concept itself....but yeah they give you much space for different interpretation with their lyrics and play of words :)

    • @bienenkonigin1414
      @bienenkonigin1414 2 роки тому +1

@@daGruedz I think the line is: "Willst du bis zum Tod, der scheidet, sie lieben..." (Do you want to love her until death separates you...), and again what you hear ist something different, that is to say: ""Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide sie lieben ....?" which means "do you want to love her until the death of her vagina." This is another play on wording and hearing: Der Tod, der scheidet / der Tod der Scheide. Just nuances in pronounciation, and Till is flirting with this potential, poetry bitch he is

Dude some of the best adages have been the fewest words. Du hast is a statement about monogamy. He is asked if he wants to be married to the same woman forever and his answer is NO. Sometimes you don't need a lot of words to make your point.

    Greetz from Hannover in Germany!
Rammstein always have awesome videos, but their live shows are even beyond these. Here are some suggestions:
"Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen" (Paris Version) --> Pyro Fashion, power, everything that Rammstein stands for
"Sonne" (Live Rock im Park / Rammstein Official) --> Hot as the name giving sun (Sonne = Sun)
"Mein Teil" (Live Hurricane Festival 2013) --> Read the story behind the song (a real case of cannibalism!) first.
"Benzin" (Madison Square Garden) --> Benzin = Gasoline --> burns well. And maybe also a man?
„Ich will“ (Hurricane Festival) --> Ich will = I want ->Sure you want to see it
There are of course a lot more insane live videos of them: "Links 2,3,4", Engel, "Mann gegen Mann", "Mutter", "Feuer Frei", …
    Have fun and rock on!

I was in the Army in Wurzburg, Germany in the late 1980's. Rammstein has the same hard hitting kind of punk sound that I remember from the punk clubs but with modern twist. I think that is why they are so popular in Europe. Also, for a punkish kind of band, their sound is really crisp. I can remember punk bands in Germany with songs that had lyrics with maybe 10 words, Du Hast is consistent with that.

Rammstein loves the double meaning of words in their texts. These are usually very lyrical. In addition, live as a band they are incredibly good. If you have the chance - go there. But you should really watch the official video of their song "Deutschland". That will blow you away too.

Wow! Jinjer and Rammstein on the same day! Two of my favorites!
There´s some reasons for the huge popularity of these guys and boy, do they go against the odds! I mean, a german heavy/industrial metal band that sings mostly in german (in german!!), doesn´t have a pretty boy as vocalist and has official videos that are NSFW to say the least, selling out stadiums across the globe is not by accident. You really got have an x-factor!
    And the main reasons are:
    - Heavy, crunchy and powerfull top of the game kind of riffs.
    - Great melodies mixed with the heaviness.
    - Surprisingly catchy chorus!
    - Originality and unique sound.
    - Till´s voice.
    - The electronic part, especially in their earlier records.
    - Amazing and second to none live performances.
    - Controversial topics always on the table.
    - Pushing boundaries in everything, from lyrics and videos (some of them are funny as hell, others very meaningfull or straight x-rated) to epic live shows.
As for the lyrics, the few expressions and words I know of german are due to them. I look up the translation of the songs names to get a feel of the song and in a lot of them i read a rough translation one time to understand it better but that´s it. It´s all about the music! I find myself singing a lot in german by memorie but don´t really know half of what it means, and that´s not a bad thing. Music has no real language., especially good music. Sometimes you sing something in english and only after years you realize "oh, that´s what they meant". And has people pointed out, a lot of it gets lost in translation due to their trademark play on words and double meanings.
If you want to really understand better, there are 4 or 5 songs that defined the first decade of the band and sky-rocketed them to the top. "Du Hast" the breaktrough song that you reacted, "Sonne" with one of their best riffs and a great official video, "Links 2,3,4" (live in Paris is amazing), "Engel" (live in Madison Square Garden is a blast) and the Triple X soundtrack song "Feuer Frei" (also don´t care for the movie but the official video is very good).
Then with the "Reise, Reise" album they got really huge in America especially with their hit "Amerika", that is probably one of their most commercial songs but it´s still a blast, has an awesome official video, has a tongue in cheek double meaning and has english lyrics mixed with german. Try some of these for starters and you won´t be disapointed.
Wow, sorry for the long assignment but I get carried away with this band! Keep up the great vids. Peace.

Ok german here trying to explain "Du hast":
"You have me" and "you hate me" sounds the same in german. But "you have me" makes less sense alone, so you start the song hearing "you hate me" and at the end of verse it becomes "you have asked me... but I said nothing". The other verse "Do you want to be faithful until death parts you?" Is the usual question you get asked by a priest when you marry someone. The background female voice then says "jaaa/yees" and he answers "Nein/No".
At the end there's also a twist on the word "scheidet" which means "to part/divorce" but there's also the word "scheide" which is a means either "scabbard" or is a very clinical word for the female genitalia. So instead of "Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet.../Do you want until death parts you...." he says "Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide.../Do you want until the death of the female genitalia..."
So, I think, the song is about a guy and a girl, the girl wants to marry and the guy doesn't and now she hates him. Many Rammstein songs have this "alone the sentence means this but in context this" thing. Many are a lot more cryptic than this one. Some are like a murder mystery where you're trying to figure out what exactly happened, who killed who and why.

    Nice video!
First, about Du Hast: It's really a play on words. The song evokes some lines of Wedding vows, so It's about having one another, but the play on word bring us the meaning.. How love is close to hate. And in the chorus, when they throw us the wedding vows: There are both of the answers: "Ja" on the background, when the flames are going up, and "Nein", when the flames go down... That's my interpretation, and I read some other comments in this direction!
About this song! It's just a great song! Till singing high notes full blown!! Great

Another Rammstein mega fan here, I believe they're popular, regardless of language barrier, there's emotion in the music and lyrics even though you might not understand them, you can feel them.
Du hast, is also on of the older songs, and was one of their first big hits back in the 90's, , everyone knows the lyrics to that song.

    Happy you're discovering Rammstein!🤘
I'm an expat living in Germany for 13 years so I'm fluent in the language. We used to analyze some of Rammstein's lyrics in our language courses! The vocalist is the main songwriter, he's also a poet. For those who speak German, Rammstein's lyrics are a treat to read and hear. Till does a lot of word games (like the song *Haifish* - which means shark - which includes loads of phrasal verbs with the verb _halten_ in German, or the song *Los* - which means start and less - which also plays with both meanings of the word to tell a sarcastic tale of their own story.)
There are loads of fans of Rammstein that started to learn German because of them. Till likes to write lyrics like a tale, he also sings sometimes as a narrator more than a singer.
Now, on the keyboardist lol. His name is Flake. He's most of the times the butt of the joke in Rammstein's live performances. The very members of the band say Flake is the one who never truly fitted with them. He doesn't look like a metal head, he's skinny, nerdy. He's an author, too. His job in the band is mainly to compose the melodic, piano/keyboard lines in songs and to make the setlist for their live shows. In a lot of live versions of their songs Till, the vocalist, and Flake play dynamics similar to the one in this video.
If you're interested, you can read the translation to their song lyrics here: www.rammsteinworld.com/en/lyrics

the song is about dominance and pain like to give and take. the keyboarder is called Flake. He is practically the band victim at the live shows.😂🤪 He is constantly on fire and even crazier. Believe me . Greetings from Germany 😎🤘🏻

Rammstein has been around for decades. their music, no matter if you can sing along to the lyrics or understand them, is loved by soooo many across the world. their concerts aren't just concerts, they're a theatrical performance and an experience. I've seen them 4 times in the states and I've never been disappointed. I've even taken friends to see them even if they don't actively listen to them and they've turned into massive fans too. everyone in that band are all trained pyrotechnics so they are able to do all the crazy stunts that they do that not a lot of bands can do so they're on another level with their fire toys and gimmicks. other bands just tend to do the flamethrowers straight up in the air but these guys can do so much more. their craziest stunt I've seen them do is for their song Zerstören. Till comes out in a giant trench coat and he's singing and it seems like a chill moment only for him to open the coat at the end to reveal suicide bombs and he explodes himself and the stage goes black. maaaaanmnnn, the first time I saw that live was wild. they've also done stunts where he whips out a fake dick and stimulates buttsex with his keyboardist and then sprays the crowd with water or something... that got them arrested after their show in France lol. I don't think they do that stunt very often though because it doesn't always have the best end result lol. he bullies the keyboardist but that's kinda just their shtick for their live shows. it's just kind of showing their goofy side lol. they're a lot of fun live and I highly recommend you go to one of their tour stops this summer/fall. they're worth it.

Riffs are great, shows are great, videos are great but what makes me love Rammstein is their lyrics and Till's unique ability to deliver a story: dark, disturbing, provocative, and yet deep, packed with emotions, intelligently written, and simply beautiful. He is a very intelligent man with a great sense of his native language. Modern poet so to speak :) Check out "Mein Herz Brennt" piano version official video (it's very important) - I was crying when I heard and saw that, so heavy song.

It's always a PLAY ON WORDS and it's always about the DOUBLE MEANING with Rammstein. The simplicity sometimes, the references, metaphors and ambiguity, it makes you think , makes you wonder and question things around you. Rammstein is thought provoking , brings out the dark side that people don't talk about ; talking about subjects people are too scared to talk about.

Riffs and shows and so on, but they're also loved because they're not afraid to tell in their songs about everything that is wrong and messed up, expose lies and hypocrisy and tell how it really is. They will tell you how things really are, accompanied by crazy cool riffs and tunes and then in the end they'll blow everything sky-high with a truckload of pyrotechnics. What's not to love.

Also you need to listen their other songs to understand why everyone loves them (their songs are provocative and they make fun of a lot of things and sing about some stuff that not everyone would be brave to sing and speak about, almost all their songs have double meanings), also watch their music clips (they are like a little movies).

To make the lyrics to du hast easy.
Its a play on the wedding vows. In the early part of the song he saying you have me. She wants to get married and is asking for it but he stayed silent. Then it goes into the vows and he says yes but she overpowers him with No, the nein part in the chorus . Then the du hast becomes the i hate you. For basically breaking his heart

This song is about pain... But it's also about being reborn thru pain...
'Flake' isn't used in this video "Because he has nothing else to do" His hand expression of moving it from left to right is a German expression of being Insane/crazy. Also when Flake rises from the ashes he is a *Sparkling* version Hologramesque version of himself... Hence the rebirth into something beautiful.
The fact he is *Blown up* at the end is a tie in to the Original video for the song when in the end the whole band is blown up. The odd walk is Also meant to symbolize the newness of his being as we are all awkward when taking our first steps. 😁

Great reaction. It may help to translate the song for you to English, so enjoy.
    Verse 1]
You are alive just for me
I stick medals in your face
You are completely devoted to me
You love me, because I don't love you
    You bleed for my salvation
A small cut and you become horny
    Your body, now totally disfigured
No matter, what is allowed, happens
    [Chorus]
    I hurt you
    I'm not sorry
    It's good for you
    Listen how it screams
    [Verse 2]
With you I have to option to torture
    Barbed wire in the urethra
Put your flesh in salt and pus
First you die, but then you live on
    Bites, kicks, hard punches
    Needle, pliers, dull saw
Whatever you wish, I don't say no
    And insert rodents into you
    [Chorus]
    I hurt you
    I'm not sorry
    It's good for you
    Listen how it screams
    I hurt you
    I'm not sorry
    It's good for you
    Listen how it screams
    [Bridge 1]
You are the ship, I'm the captain
What's the destination of the journey?
I see your face in the mirror
You love me, because I don't love you
    [Chorus]
    I hurt you
    I'm not sorry
    It's good for you
    Listen how it screams
    I hurt you
    I'm not sorry
    It's good for you
    Listen how it screams

Rammstein and lyrics and melodies is a fascinating subject, especially if German is not your native language. Rammstein lyrics seem to be very simple on a first look, but if you take a deeper dive into the lyrics is when you start to uncover the different layers which is the fun part. This is also the reason why most fans at some time decide to learn German to get a better and deeper understanding of the meaning of their songs. Most of their songs are also accompanied by the music. So the lyrics and music goes hand in hand. To answer your question for "Du Hast" it is a play on words and if you would translate it one on one the meaning is "you have". But as mentioned earlier Rammstein lyrics are never that easy and lot of the double.triple meaning and play on words gets lost in translation.

So for anybody still wondering about the "Du Hast" thing:
    Lyrics are:
    Du
    Du hast
    Du hast mich
    Du hast mich gefragt
Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab' nichts gesagt.
    This translates to:
    You
You have (but also sounds like: Du hasst - You hate)
You have me (but also sounds like: Du hasst mich - You hate me)
    You have asked me
You have asked me and I said nothing.

Hello, I am German and yes. "du hast" is a song playing with the words "have and hate". "hast" = "have", "hasst" = hate". First line you will naturally understand "you hate me" but then it turns into "you have asked me".

  • @derekfalconberg3481

Here we go..... 🤪 The Du Hast lyrics thing. Ask a person who’s first language is German, with a strong grasp of English as second. They’ll most
    likely translate to :
Du hast mich gefragt, und ich hab nichts gesagt.
You have already asked me, and I have said nothing.
The official English version is :
You hate me to say, and I did not obey.
Second verse is a play on the German wedding vows, woman says yes, man says no.
In the official video (Directed by David Lynch) we have the guy being brought to warehouse/building by his SO. They kiss before parting (she’s saying yes).
He goes in, with a gun at his back, hand on it. A crowd of guys in masks meets him. Then they’re laughing, hugging, and doing drugs or some weird blood stuff. (First verse.) His SO’s car blows up as he’s coming (I suspect he rigged it, him saying no).
The song is actually about group loyalty by my understanding. They had all either just been left, or had left partners during Herzeleid album (‘94). So there was a great sense of loyalty to each other at that time, I think that may still be to this day. Look at many other bands - 5 different lineups over the tears? Or more?
    My 2 cents. 🙂

Here is what I think he is doing in Du Hast. A guy is talking to a woman. He tells her, you asked me and I said nothing. Then he repeats several times, You have me. Then, there is a repetition of wedding vows...basically, will you love each other and be faithful, etc. until you die? Lady says
“YA” or in English,“yes” in the background girl chorus. The the guy, and the audience, yell “NEIN”. It’s the age old, girl gets guy, or does she? When she finds out that he didn’t mean yes forever, does she have him, or hate him? They let you decide, but my money is on “HATE”. Watch the official video for more levels of meaning, or just enjoy playing it really loud to irritate your neighbors. I’m 71, but enjoyed loud rock back in the 60’s, and these guys make me laugh.
PS. I won’t watch most of their videos with the grandkids and warn you that they are for MMM audiences only....they are fairly filthy, and very, very disturbing. The one I would watch with anyone is Engel, which is heart wrenchingly sad, but lovely with cool pyrotechnics.

"du hast" is a play on words, because at first you just hear "du hast" what could mean "you have" or "you hate" then "du hast mich" means "you got me" as well as "you hate me" and then the chorus is "du hast mich gefragt" which means "you did ask me". Those auxilliary verbs man :D

DU HAST is an exception, most of rammsteins songs have usually way more lyrics and are more complex. Its got little lyrics but because of that non germans can sing along more and i think that makes this song so popular.

  • @TheWappla
    @TheWappla Рік тому

U can translate du hast as it is spoken in three different ways into english. The first is "you have (done)", the second one is "you own (me)", and the third one is "you hate (me)". The chorus is: Do you want to be faithful until death seperates you? So it is a Song about the toxic character of marriage and love. In fact it is a complex love song compressed into one word and thats genious.

I think the biggest thing you’re missing regarding the lyrics. It does t matter. It’s the music and the visual of it. I was front row in Chicago and it was insane
If you listen to Bach. Beethoven etc. you don’t listen to them for any lyrics. There aren’t any. It’s an even in musicianship. It’s about the experience
With rammstein. When you learn what he means with the lyrics. You have a deeper appreciation for his intentions for the song.

The popularity is with the riffs, but also the lyrics in other songs take themes nobody wants to talk about, "Mein Teil". That song is about a cannibale. Or "Mutter", wich is about a living who is born in a labratory. Only to say some of the songs.

People are right on "Du hast" being a play on words. It sounds like "Du hasst" and the structure of the lyrics is meant to misled the listener, the true meaning can only be seen from the complete sentence.
