The 4D Meat Scam! What About Species Appropriate?

  • The celebrity UA-cam pet food marketers love telling you commercial pet food contains awful stuff like 4D meat. They also love telling you you should feed your dog like a wolf, because corn and other ingredients are just fillers. so feed them a species appropriate diet. That all sounds great but lets break it down. Is it all marketing and makes no sense?

    I love this Glenn! Thank you so much for shedding light on this topic. I was one of those who was influenced by the two crazy cat ladies and all the other names you mentioned thinking I should totally be feeding raw to my cats. I was in a pet store here in Canada where they sold raw and "higher end" pet foods, the lady behind the counter rushed over to me and gave me this 45 min chat about how bad kibble is and here.... watch this movie called "Petfooled" not sure if you've seen it, it's here on youtube, making me feel like the worst pet parent lol. After trying to get my cats to eat raw which they hated BTW, I tried Carna4, it's okay not the best though, so now after watching your videos I've done a full circle and now I've gone back to feeding Hills prescription diet lol I just opened the bag and my cats are inhaling it lol Thanks again for putting out such fantastic content. OH if you could review the hills multi benefit cat food that would be awesome. Thanks again! :)))

      Homemade or worst case go for farmers dog but it's expensive and homeade is more trustworthy. I treat my dogs like my children. Only the best. I lost a dog to kidney failure, trusting normal dog foods. Never again.

    Most of us are not opposed to "byproducts" but what really ticks me off is the pricing on pet food knowing the inputs are less expensive than "human grade". I wish a "fair priced" pet food company would come up. Especially for those of us with multiple pet households that end up taking in pets to give them a good life and are trying to feed them as healthy as affordable. Great Video!

      I very much agree. If this helps you at all, I buy my 2 cats and 1 dog their kibble in bulk. Both bags are about 15.5 pounds. When I open it goes in the freezer and I have several storage jars that I refill every few days. It's a bit more work, but it saves so much money because the bigger bags are a lot cheaper.

      @@Jaycv-dq3rg 💯 I think this guy still works for Hills the way he supports this garbage. Dogs live alot longer and even longer if we feed them homemade. They don't need to eat diseased food anymore. They've evolved to dogs plus they live longer the better we feed them. Dog food ain't it

    Entertaining video. I have three criteria, ingredients, nutrients, litter box odor. When I feed my cats fresh food, I don't worry about what is going into them. Nor am I too concerned with the low bioavailability of organic calcium and phosphorus. And there is little to no litter box odor. With any commercial food, wet or dry, the litter box smells. Especially with Panda, since she does not cover up her business. Happy Caturday!

    Only that's not what they are saying. As someone else mentioned the diseased animals in the wild are not the same as diseased from farms.
    -the elk in the wild probably doesn't have any drugs in it.
    But I wonder if you could tell why if by-products are liver and other organs, why aren't they named in the ingredient list or even appear as a separare ingredient after liver in some cases?

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  12 днів тому

      Sorry for the delay. I have to wonder if the diseased animals are ever treated at all, and what diseases are common? its the depressing part of the pet food discussion I try to avoid, to be honest. your question about organ meat vs by products is a great one that I can't answer. AAFCO used to be very strict and you couldn't differentiate your ingredients like today. you couldn't even say deboned chicken vs chicken. so we are stuck with definitions that are way too vague. That's why the nutrient profile is the only way to judge food.

    I feed my dog a prescription potato/rabbit diet and she is doing well on that (she has IBD). My concern is that despite RC saying that she should eat over 200 kcal for her 7 lbs, she would gain too much weight on that much food. I am sure she gets enough protein on that amount of calories. She maintains her weight with 165 kcal a day even with a mile walk every day. But is she getting enough of the other nutrients like vitamins or trace minerals. Or is all of the nutrition based on calorie intake and if you regulate the calories, all the rest falls in place?

    Hey there. Is there a cat food you found that has a comparable nutrient panel to science diet? My one cat is reluctant to eat the hills and the hills has a sour vinegary smell that I’m not too happy with. I do want to prevent urinary issues. I have a 13 year old a 3 year old and a 4 year old all spayed strictly indoor.

      My vet recommended the Royal Canine Feline Oral Care kibble to me and she said it also has the nutrients in it for preventing urinary issues. I went with Science Diet instead, as my cats absolutely love it, but I would say this is also a really good option, based on my vet.

    10:25 - the DogRisk group led by Anna Hielm-Björkman that Rachel Fusaro interviewed actually recommends feeding 4D meat to dogs for ecological sustainability. I will have to find the interview for you, but it's in English.

    • @ZaryaTheLaika

      "Ecological and healthy dog food from abattoir by-products" by Antti Kivimäki published by Suomen Kulttuurirahasto on Septmeber 15, 2021.
      Contains interview with Siru Salin, a veterinary nutritionist employed by Snellman meat processing plant and a member of the DogRisk group that Rachael Fusaro highly praises.

    • @ZaryaTheLaika
      @ZaryaTheLaika Місяць тому +1

      Technically Salin didn't directly say 4D meat. Just implied here: "in the past, some of the by-products were supplied to fur farms and the rest to pet-food producers. With fur farming continuously declining, it is worth considering how the products could be more effectively put to use elsewhere"" because everyone in Finland knows horse meat, elderly cows etc used to go into dog food because there's too much antibiotics and medications for human consumption.

    Some of the stuff he says is good, but as soon as he says corn is good for dogs, it eradicates his credibility.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  3 дні тому

      Well, I'm glad you think some of my stuff is good. I would suggest you don't concern yourself with my credibility because I'm simply the messenger. I'm not the PhD nutritionist or the board certified nutritionist. Those are the folks saying corn can provide energy, fatty acids, amino acids(protein), fiber, etc in a well balanced diet.
      You can disagree with that, but perhaps you should also question the credibility of the folks telling you different. First clue, what are they selling? second clue, do they have any nutritional qualifications at all. Thanks for the comment though!.

    • @Tailionis
      @Tailionis 3 дні тому

      @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy science tells me corn isn't good. Humans can't digest it, and dogs struggle to digest it as well. Corn is used for filler in farm animals, and so it makes sense to use it as a filler in dog food. It is not good and simply a cheap thing to add.
