Awesome video, thanks so much. Was getting very frustrated I couldn't just jam along practicing my guitar (I'm just a beginner) along with a drum track but understand now. I bought my R8 second hand. I think you under rate your guitar skills, I thought it sounded great.
bro... lol ur video, aside from hilarious, was probably better than any I have seen on the R8 so far. Much appreciated I got this thing and almost threw it out the front door an hour later. I was missing the old Tascam's so bad until I came across this vid. Thank you
If you have a bass amp with an Aux In you can run one of the R8 outputs to it. What I like to do is record my bass, panned to the right, then run that channel straight to the bass amp. Everything else goes right channel out to mono in the PA. This is a very cool setup if you can play, or fake your way, on various instruments. For instance, I'll record a couple of guitars and bass then sit behind the drums and play along. The R8 has a "Control In" jack so you can run a simple foot switch to start and stop playback.
Nice video man! Been watching and learning..liked and subscribed...any possibility of a "how to" on recording vocals properly and getting a good clear recording? The proper set up when using a sure 58 microphone on the R8? There seems to be no how to on vocals on the R8?
I just got this and when i hit the 1 and turn the green light off, it never changes to red ever so I cant arm it. I hear my synth but it just refuses to arm . Is there an additional setting to start this?
Make sure plugged into input one, little toggle to guitar/bass, push the button for on/off to on, the gain turned to about 3/4 up, then try cycle track 1 from green to red. hope this helps!
I’ve been looking for a tutorial doing what you describe at the end of this vid. I want to edit my drums so I can have an intro, fills, change ups. Can you do a tutorial on this?
@@RustyWeaveStudios ok boss, I cancelled the tascam under your recommendations, I am a little nervous this thing looks so cheap, at least in the pictures...thanks.

I have had no luck with putting files on the unit unfortunately. So I use the R8 as a base to start. Then transfer those wav files to pc and further edit/master/upload.

This might be a silly question, but how easy is it to punch in at a precise second in the track if you mess up something small and you need to punch in to redo or overdub? This might determine whether I get this or a DAW. Thanks.
Something I find very annoying is the fact that I can’t play a loop at the exact same time that I hit the pad. It blinks. And then it starts playing whenever it thinks it’s right. This is very stupid. Is there a way to bypass this?
Hi, sorry if this is a dumb question (I'm a beginner and haven't bought this yet), but do you plug in the guitar directly to the recorder? Or is it guitar to amp and amp to recorder? What if I want to use my own guitar pedal?
All 3 will work, you can go directly into R-8 and use the R-8 effects; or you can plug your guitar into your amp and then plug the amp's direct out/ record out into the R-8 or mic your amp and the mic is plugged into R-8 or even use the mics on the R-8; or finally you could plug your guitar into your pedal and then the pedal into the R-8.
You can do all your drums on one track. You can create and save patterns that are up to 100 bars long, then in the sequencer, you can put as many of those patterns in sequence as you need on one track.
Can you put different patterns on a single track? I thought you have to put each pattern on its own track, then bounce the audio to a single track to consolidate.
@@E-BikingAdventures ah interesting. I think that must be in a firmware update, because it didn’t used to be that way. Thanks! I will dig through the manual more.
Hello there. I have a problem and i think maybe you can help me. I bought this device without the journal so im kinda fucked right now.. Here's the problem: i have by accident assigned a self-made drum-pattern to the wrong channel and i have tried to erase it for three days without success. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction how to erase it? Cheers and thanks for the info i snapped up from this video!
As a basic recorder it's great. As a drum programming machine it's useless. You can't import files into projects. So the provided internal drums DONT WORK in the recorder bar for jamming.
I can't believe how much I enjoyed using this away from computer recording. Thanks !

Great video Man ! I got my R8 yesterday - I was laying down tracks in no time after watching this ! Thank you -

Can you give newby to zoom R8 any advice on tracks without drums? Is the r8 suited /capable of "no drum" tracks?
@@kvkcoils8011 You can have no drums for sure.

Best instructions I've seen so far. My Zoom R8 is on the way!! Just an old rocker here, Thanks
Thank you!!
Quick question: Does unit allow live panning of a track while in final playback mixdown for creating master file? Thanks.
I believe so. Panning would need to be live while recording to the master track. Never needed to pan so not 100 percent.
Yes. All is included in the master. Volume and eq changes. That's so cool about mastering.
@@svenjansen2134 thanks 😊
Best tutorial - made all the difference to being able to get started with the Zoom R8 - thanks
Just bought one of these I'm a bass player but I also play guitar can't believe what these things do for the money amazing
Very good tutorial. 8:12 Do you really need to spend a track for drums ? Wont the drums sound without a track assigned to them ?
Need to assign drums to a track
Two tracks if stereo.
Wow this is actually a good video. Thanks man I just got mine like a few days ago . This has helped me lots .

Dude it has xlr inputs and phantom power. It records everything. Has on-board mics even.
@Sven Jansen ha! Thanks for reply..I have since found how to do it. When I posted that comment was when I first got the R8.
thanks for putting together this tuto. really helpful for basic commands on a R8 with guitar. your enthusiasm is making it cooler than the manual :)

Forgot about that gain dial. Make sure the master track is off not red. If master track red you can only green or off tracks.
did you format your sd card?
Question how do you register online with Steinberg when you buy this package they ask for elisance and I don't have one of those
Should of been a key in the box somewhere. Honestly I don't know if I have it. All my crap is in storage so I can't look for it.
Or like on included documentation
I’ve been looking for a tutorial doing what you describe at the end of this vid. I want to edit my drums so I can have an intro, fills, change ups.

Maybe in the future yeah.
You can create all that as a pattern up to 100 bars at a time, then sequence as many patterns as you need.
glade y take about the pan i was gonna ask butt you talk about it lol
great video , thanks
I ordered the tascam, not sure if that was the right choice, are you still happy with this machine?

My amp has a input for recording do i put my guitar in my amp then into the zoom r8 or straight into the r8 and add use a speaker?
Can do that or headphones. Up to you, I would try both and see what you like for sound.
@@RustyWeaveStudios alright thanks man
If I wanted to start with a short guitar lick before the drums kick in, how would I do that?
Use metronome and track sequencer for drums. I do cover those in the videos. Hope this helps!

Does this unit have reverb, or if you do you need to use a reverb pedal if you wanted it on guitar or vocals?
Has reverb for any input device.
great video , any tips on synching my recorded song fr a keyboard, per instrument track by track?
You will need to set the tempo on the R8. Other than that I have no idea. :(
You have to play in step. Follow the rhythm.

I have made punch ins on some of the recent songs released. Is possible without any disrupt in the track.
Get one anyway because it's also an audio input & surface controller for running in your fav Daw
Very easy because it has a footswitch input!

Yes. The fill is just another drum track you make or use preset.

Nice. When you changed the tempo did it also automatically change the tempo of the guitar too? I didn't know you could do that.
If you recorded guitar at tempo 120 then changed tempo to 140. You would need to lay the guitar down again at the new tempo.
