It's interesting to see you posting on Joe's video because I started watching you for all the sport bike stuff. Ironically, THE TWO FASTEST RIDERS I've seen on the street were two old dudes in flight suits on BMW sport tourers/grand tourers. All I know is they had boxes on the back and big ass screens on the front. This was 2010 so all the usual liter bikes were represented and even all us bitches on smaller bikes who wasted money because you could learn on a 1000. 😂 Actually our group was pretty cool and took care of us. Anyway, we chatted them up and they asked if we ride here regularly because they've never us. Really cool guys. The BMW guys asked if we wanted a tow up the mountain. Mind you the liter bike guys were all combinations of VERY FAST street riders/track day riders/pro-am racers(Some of them rode with slicks and take-offs on the street) They sarcastically accepted the old timers offer and we waited while they packed their boxes. We start off doing our MotoGP weaving to warm up our tires while the older gents were just ahead of us chatting it up. We hit turns 1,2,3,4,5,6, hit the apex of the 7th turn and the old timers were gone. The liter bikes immediately took off which left us 750/600 riders with one pissed off sweeper on an R1 who didn't even know he was sweeping that day. He told us to "take your time, work on your lines, and I'll come back for y'all." We're doing our thing and eventually catch up to the liter bikes and continue up the mountain. Guess who we see at the top of the mountain with their flighsuits halfway zipped, side boxes open, eating snacks, and smoking cigars: The old timers. "Well gotdamn. What happened? We thought y'all come here all the time. We were just cruising." They were like 62 and 60. They told us sportbikes were a no-go at their age, trikes weren't even bikes(they said some funny shit about trikes I can't remember), and that they basically wanted something they could could ride "quickly" when needed. 😂 Yeah, sure. Oh yeah, they used to ride track, but it was expensive and they got tired of riding in circles all day. Riding mountain roads was like riding a new track every ride. Before that introduction I thought BMW motorcycles, besides the S1000RR, were bikes for dudes who wore suits to work and cruised the countryside taking pictures. Be careful out there Baron, Jason Statham, and Joe. Oh I and still ride too. By myself or with vetted riders.
Joe, one thing to keep in mind on that GS is that your front and rear brakes are tethered, when your front brake lever in used, it drags the rear brake. However when you press down on the rear brake, the front brake is not applied. Get into the habit of using your front brakes just about all of the time. The only time you'd only use the rear brake would be if you blow a corner off the tarmac onto slick grass, stand the bike up then you'd apply the rear brake.
Loved this video and really hope we see more bike content! Completely different style to the usual first ride videos, a lot more real world and it's great to hear the perspective of someone riding a big bike like the GS who's not been riding for years.
The Alpha and Omega of bikes 🙌... they get under your skin, im on my 4th 👍. Had sports bikes for years but eventually realised that on our roads, and for doing big days, touring etc .. the GS just ticks all the boxes 💯👍
Joe you're killing me - we have matching M3 Tourings (Dravit Grey with Silverstone interior) and now you have bought the same bike !! We are twins from different continents! You will love the 1250 mate - I have had mine 2 years and they are AMAZING. Went the GSA as I live in Australia so our trips are a little longer than UK so needed the bigger fuel tank. Enjoy and welcome to the Motorrad family !!!!
I've got that exact bike, had it for around 4 weeks after coming from sports / naked bikes... I just can't stop riding the thing, does everything so well. The perfect bike for potholed UK roads
Joe welcome to the wonderful world of motorcycling which will bring many wonderful new adventures ….. had plenty of RR’s and now have that exact GS and it’s the perfect around bike as Chris will tell you 👍👍👍
Nice riding! I’ve been riding for 32 years, mainly superbikes. I still love it! Last year I bought exactly the same bike you have there. It’s bloody awesome.
Ian was my instructor too @ World of BMW. Very good man. He allowed me to ride their GS too after my test pass. Pretty much sealed my decision for me. People thought I was mad to buy a GS as a 1st bike.
Hi joe welcome to the biking community, it’s great to see you’re enjoying riding and also you look so natural while riding 👏🏼. I’m a massive petrol head and absolutely love my cars however there’s just some kind of feeling you got when riding a motorcycle that you just don’t get from driving a fast car and that’s why I love it so much. Keep up the great work 👍🏼 ride safe 👌🏼
Joe as a fellow BMW Driver and Rider what a cracking video that gives a great insight for those who dont know what being on a bike is like. So much freedom balanced with a lot of responsibility. ENJOY!
Wow, this is a surprise ! Good move Joe, I doubt you'll realise at this stage how addicted bikes can become! Ride safe buddy! PS you've chosen the world's most capable, comfortable bike! Cheers.
Welcome to the fold. It does feel like a DH MTB , similar geometry and handle bar width. I like your ambition with the knee sliders! See you at some point no doubt for a coffee
Please let BMW know that if they have another one kicking around I will gladly ride one around and review it for them. This morning I rode out over the Peak District for a few hours and then went out again this afternoon over into Wales and back. Once you get the buzz there’s nothing like it. There certainly isn’t a brand new car at 17k that can put a smile on your face like that bike will. Enjoy the summer.
I passed my test with BMW Royston last weekend. Can't imagine what insurance is like on a 1250 GS as your first bike with 0 no claims. I'm looking at Tiger 900's
Good choice of bike - I have exactly the same one!😀 You mentioned doing a day of advanced training, but I would urge you to pursue either the IAM Roadsmart or the RoSPA courses. Both are based on “Motorcycle Roadcraft The Police Rider’s Handbook” and will make you a faster, smoother, safer and more confident rider. If you have ever followed a bike cop and marvelled at how they cover ground so quickly and (apparently) so effortlessly, then now’s a good time to find out. 👍
Welcome to biking good sir! Fellow 1250GS rider here - absolute beast of a bike (I leave for Picos De Europe on Tuesday - so excited!!). BTW - the indicators self cancel but its still good practice to cancel them anyway. Enjoy!
Absolutely loved this! Joe you are a natural! Also, I watch a lot of bike content and your audio setup is spot on! really great quality, looking forward to all the upcoming two wheeled content!
Really nice video Joe , a bit of bike content ads some more verity to an already awesome channel. Wouldn’t necessarily have to be a review , just watching you bumbling around our beautiful countryside and chatting on a bike is entertaining and relaxing to watch. Thanks for your content 👍🏻
Great to see you out on the GS Joe 👍🏻 Have you found the brake hold function buddy it’s really useful especially on hills 👍🏻 Also indicators do self cancel on the newer GS’s I love my GS Rally ❤

Spot on choice the GS Joe, within the 1st 6 month's of getting mine I decided to try the GS on some easy off road touring with Toro Adventure in Spain. It's a great way to expand your knowledge & skills & familiarise the way the GS is off the asphalt. Toro Adventure do different courses/touring & use the GS1250 HP so don't worry you don't have to use your bike! Europe is having a dry spell at the minute but the routes we did were I'd say beginner level anyway. Enjoy your time on the GS, awesome machine. Daz
Congratulations and good to hear that you've taken up riding! Have you done any biketrackdays yet? Also the California Superbike School is a good one to try out 👍
You can ride any bike mate. Some rear sets can make all the difference on any bike. Phil crowe can hustle a sport bike round the TT inside the top 10 and hes a mountain of a man. Perkins (chris) is also a tall bloke and has no problem. Hopefully see you exsperiance of plethora of different bikes on your new journey. Jumping straight onto the GS is the benchmark for a touring bus though. I want to see the progression to that first 180+hp 3rd gear wide open theottle exsperiance 😂
You need to try an S1000XR. I think you'd enjoy one. Bit of a tippy toe bike for myself, so should be ideal for you. Sports bike engine in a taller package.
Thanks for the great and entertaining video. Got job as always 😊. I would love to see you review the new R12 nineT when you get the chance, as I have been considering buying this bike or its predecessor the R nineT. Would love to hear your opinion on it 👍

Nice to see from a bike rider perspective and promoting a safe approach. Sadly too many road users, whatever they are on/in, seem to think they are indestructible, that everyone has seen them or that they have priority over everyone else. If you show a little patience, we all get home safely. Also, if you wait a few seconds there is more of a gap to accelerate into 😀
That bike and it's spec is unbelievable. Not been on a bike for around 15 years, and back then, they didn't even have a fuel gauge. Tremendous vlog mate.
Sound was excellent. Nice ride. I've done a few trips over the years down through France and Spain on various bikes. I haven't had one for a few years now, but there's no doubting, they are great fun. The pot holes in this country are beyond a joke now. I live in Kent and they're no better down here, believe me. Anyway, enjoy the rides!
Sometimes I want an Africa Twin because I’m lazy and want the DCT. Sometimes I want a multistrada because it’s a rocket. Then I go look st my 1250gs and I just can’t trade it. It’s the perfect mix of fast enough and comfort. My wife rides behind me and she says she sees people breaking their necks to stare at it. It’s the adventure so it’s massive overall. Primary brake is your front brake because of weight transfer (just like in a car) but go some where quiet where you can practice emergency braking, start out easy and increase speed and brake pressures as your confidence grows but practice in applying your back brake ever so slightly before your front brake as this will help mitigate weight transfer and keep control in emergency situations and maximise braking on sealed surfaces. Practice practice practice as this’ll help this become second nature particularly in emergencies when you you need to chuck the picks out.
