Thank you, excellent review/comparo!... same as some of your other follower, I come from sportbikes all my life, been riding for almost 50 years and even did road/track racing in my early years, anyways,.... I have had a 1200 LC GS from 2014 to 2016, since I needed it to get to my work on a wild life reserve /farm in South Africa, and I thoroughly enjoyed that particular GS, then there after I went back to a K1600 GT, then a S1000 "single R" 2016, and then last year I bought a new R1250 GSA in October.... strangely enough, I never really enjoyed the 1250 GSA that I found too heavy and too high/bulky ( much more so than the K16) and in February 2021 I bought the latest Gen 2 S1000 XR and have since clocked 15 000 km of absolute fun and bliss.... obviously I am more of a tar road rider than off road, and I find the XR the perfect weapon for adrenaline, fast touring, fast scratching in the mountain passes and canyons carving on long and even sharp slower corners.... both the GS/GSA and XR can indeed be ridden fast, but the XR is far more agile, and handles far better in every tarmac / asphalt roads situations when ridden hard, fast and skillfully than any of the current GS or GSA although the high torque at lower revs of the GS/GSA can be a non negligeable advantage in some of the tight twisties roads, but again the XR ridden at high revs in the correct gears is mostly untouchable.... just my opinion and personnal experience, ... at the end of day to each its own of course, and both are absolutely wonderful quality machines from one of the greatest manufacturer ! It was an enjoyable read - thank you for sharing your experiences! I'd love to ride in South Africa, had a chance to stay there once for a month and deeply enjoyed. Even the slight thrill of Johannesburg and some rural areas. Now as for riding fast and hard - perhaps this could indeed be where the XR could outperform a GS in terms of handling. I never tried to push those bikes to the limit, so my conclusion is that in everyday riding, a GS was more pleasant for me personally to deal with. But seeing your expertise in sports bikes and likely the skills of handling some of the most powerful bikes, I get the point. And yeah - it's all about those revs in an XR. When one is at the right spot there, this bike is - as you said - untouchable. All the best and stay safe!

I've owned a 2018 XR for three years and have 35,000 miles on the odometer. I keep trying to like the GS because I do a lot of touring and I read/watch lots of reviews telling me that it is the "best" bike for that, but when I actually ride the XR and GS back to back there is no comparison for me. The GS feels so slow and big compared to the XR, despite what people say it doesn't feel quicker to me even in the lower RMP range, and I hate the quiet farting sound of that GS engine (notwithstanding that I know it's a technologically great system). V-Told is right about fuel capacity though -- my GS buddies still have 1/4-1/3 of a tank of fuel left when I need to stop for gas on my XR. 38 miles to the gallon on my XR versus nearly 50 on the GS. Oh well, I still love the XR. Most fun I've ever had on a motorcycle!
That's why they make the XR. It fits a different niche than the GS. It certainly put a smile on my face when I rode it.

Very nicely writtten - thanks for sharing your perspective! What matters is that your bike suits you the most. @BradRB made a perfect point saying that "that's why they make the XR" - exactly! Not everyone likes a GS, Ducati Multistrada or Honda Africa Twin. XR has edge over them in terms of performance, KTM will likely do the best off the road and BMW F850GS may be the most fuel-efficient. The ultimate question is what each one of us values the most. That's why I believe thos comparisons need to go point be point to clearly show in which circumstances which bike can have an edge over others. I'm super glad that you're enjoying the XR as it's an awesome bike. If you've got a stretch of road where you can let it breathe, then there's not much out there that can keep up with it. My 2021 Triple Black GS, is the most comfortable bike I ever owned. So neutral. It can go long distance, and it can play as a sport bike as well, Handles Amazing 👍🇺🇸🇩🇪

I actually traded my GS for a Triumph 900-GT Pro..then o traded that for a Triumph Rocket 3R, it’s a sickness, but a good one 😉
I used to own a GS and now an XR. Like Regis L. says, there’s no way that the GS feels lighter, quite the opposite, it has less 26kg but it seems 50kg less.

For a guy who doesn’t like the XR so much you are always returning to her constantly. Why is that? Just put it aside and compare the GS with another bike…KTM…Ducati…etc. I have a 2021 XR and I can tell that it blasts the GS anytime. Drop 4 gears? Nop…just ride on the right one and there’s enough power for anything! Cheers and keep the good work on the reviews.
Here's the GS and Ducati Mutlistrada V4 then: ua-cam.com/video/kPAURf-Bri0/v-deo.html Yup, you may ride on the right gear until at some point you might want or need to explode forward. The XRs that I've been riding do just fine sitting in the 6th gear at 100 km/h (60 mph) cruising, being buttery smooth, quiet and relaxed. Now since you've having an XR yourself, you know what happens if you roll the throttle wide open in those circumstances. If you don't want to drop so many gears to explode forward, you'd be better off on a GS in that particular situation. I believe it's worth understanding and so it's there in the review. Yeah, one may start dropping gears way earlier or stay in the second half of the rev counter at all times, but I don't think that may ride like this anywhere else except for race track. I believe an XR is fabulous, and to me is the most exciting in terms of performance out of the top trio (GS, XR and Ducati Multistrada V4). I also like its looks the most out of those. Not sure what's there not to like about it. It's down to where and how we use these bikes so that they satisfy us the most. All the best!

Hardest parts with those reviews is that some people are so dumb that even if you lay all the facts on the table they would just not be able to process them and keep shouting their NPC lines anyway. So sad really...

Awesome comparison...I've got quite a few miles on my 08 GS Hex head and am looking at a new bike. My sons ride Street Triples and I wanted something in that vein. Having ridden an XR I think I'm gonna just stick with a NEWER GS. The bottom end torque is just too good and the higher revving inline 4 just doesn't suit my riding style. The GS pulls like a tractor from idle and I enjoy that torque and the rideabilty it fosters. Thanks again for a great review.

I bought a 2021 XR. I'm 5'7" and the GS felt too big. I'm coming off sportbikes so I wanted a very fast, comfortable sports touring bike that I will never go off road with. The XR fit that bill perfectly 🥰. The GS is a fine bike BUT "very fast" is probably not a word I would use to describe that bike. Two very different types of bike for sure...
Nice one, I agree that "very fast" may seem like a bit of an overstatement in the case of a GS. Especially comparing to XR.
@@VToldsMotoShow I tried both bikes and the GS felt massive in comparison. I also knew that I have no desire at all to go off road with my bike. I wanted something different than what I was used to. Which was Japanese sportbikes from 1985 to the present. A bike that was fast, comfortable, accommodate luggage and decent for two ppl. And the XR checked all the boxes.

lol... GS = VERY FAST... too funny. I have an XR and I several mates with GS's, which we refer to as Toyota Camry's... i.e. boring. and all they want to do is swap bikes and ride the XR.
Was trying to decide between the two, now it's clear: the GS is the better choice for me.

I’ve owned both. Eventually chose the GS over the XR because GS, for me, was more of a “jack of all trades” kind of bike.

I think I lost hope after seeing Suzuki's last V-Strom 1000. Perhaps on the other hand, some other bikes are evolving in a direction that many of us would like. Thanks for a hint about it.
Although I love the motor on the XR, for me the GS is king of comfort and long distance touring.

Having had a GSA and currently owning a s1000xr I have to say there is no comparison really. The big GS is a workhorse, easy position and is built for lugging lots of luggage if required. I feel it lacks top end umph.
The xr is a bit like Marmite you either love it or hate it. The lower end is uninspiring but once you hit 4th gear it gets real. The handling is great and the response is wicked.
Both very different beasts in there own right!
I’m waiting to see what BMW are going to bring out in 2022,hopefully with more bhp so keeping up with the KTM 1290 should be easier. The XR can match them but it’s limited being a sports tourer. Love the grey colour though,mine has matching grey luggage sets it apart.

If you’re riding twisty roads, the XR is faster IMO. I have a 2016 XR and a 2018 1290 SAS and the XR handles better and like you said, if you’re in the right RPM, it pulls like hell. If you raced them side by side in a straight, butt dyno would have me bet on the KTM though. The acceleration on the bike in any gear is strong. I haven’t had a chance to ride the new 1290 though. I’ve heard the handling is better with the new tank setup.

Hi man, you really have the better reviews of all. Just a little help. I’m a Harley guy which the universe let tried an XR and immediately fall in love. I know it has no off road things, but there is a lot of videos of an XR doing off road things. I guess is not that good as a GS but for a Sunday dirty road is good enough? Thank you very much
Hi, thanks for sharing. Yeah, I'd say that S1000XR's offroad capabilities are like any other regular motorcycle, for example BMW R1250RT - similar position, a bit more weight but in turn more torque down low. XR isn't really an offroad beast with small wheel travel and an inline 4 engine, but on the other hand on the street likely nothing would beat its performance in any similar category. Cheers!
Test rode an XR, went with a GSA and have a single R for weekend rips 🔥
And that's a kind of a solution too!
no bad combo, GSA for comfort and a bit touring and occasional off road, and the single R for week end blasts, I like it, have had both as well, but now riding the Gen 2 XR also very capable for "week end rips" and allows you long distance escapes in comfort and far better protection than the R...enjoy!
i have a R1200R LC and a 21 S1000XR, i love both but the XR is very dangerous for your Driver License
Very well-said about the XR's tendencies to put riders in trouble. It can do that, oh it can!
GS for me. I like the XR but it doesn't fit well with the roads in my area or my riding style as I like to go off the beaten path.
That's fair enough - offroad is definitely reserved for a GS out of these two.
some misreporting, you can get a lowered suspension on the XR from the dealership making the seat height lower.
Not sure where the misreporting is but you may get both motorcycles with a lowered seat and both may also come with lowered suspensions. The lowered suspension is an option that one needs to pay additionally for while I believe that one may choose a seat that suits them when a bike is being configured.
Nice video, although my perceptions from the XR are different. I normally ride the R1250R - riding the XR is like driving a Ferrari, whilst riding the R is like riding a tractor. Both are fun though. I would probably put a heavy girlfriend-passenger on the R though. Just intuition.
Thanks for sharing. So R1250R should feel similarly in terms of engine to R1250GS since it's the same powertrain. The boxer and this inline 4 cylinder engines are both fun but in different areas - I'd put it this way.
S1000XR. Love my 2022 model. Have to change exhaust thow.

Honestly love both bikes. Brand new the GS is a couple thousand more dollars compared to the XR. Would enjoy the dirt road travel the GS can do but not sure it’s worth 3-4 grand more for that. Think either is a great choice depending on what you like to drive ADV vs touring. Think the GS is more versatile but XR is more fun carving canyons. Kinda wish they would make a GS with a little more HP and not so damn big. I’m a short dude and would only go down dirt roads.
Since you're mentioning canyon roads, I'd recommend that you ride a GS as it may turn out that it's one of the best bikes for a twisty road out there. I personally would choose it for such riding conditions myself over the XR. On the other hand, the difference in maximum performance is hugely in favor for the XR and it demolishes the GS. Flexibility is a different story though but if you want, then outside the city you may keep the XR at higher RPM and it will explode then too when needed. So yeah, I wish R1250GS had more power too.
I have a Gen 1 XR.........and my friend just got the Gen2, I can hardly hear it when we are out compared to the Gen1 he had before , for that reason I just bought another Gen1 (late 2018 low miler) simply because the Gen2 doesn't excite me enough yet, I have a feeling I will have a GS next time tho. Adore my Gen1 XR in the mean time.
I'm happy that you're enjoying your XR. It definitely sounds better than the successor, however perhaps an aftermarket exhaust could help the 2nd gen.

V-Told pozwolisz że nie ze wszystkim się zgodzę, komfort różnie rozumiany na obu motocyklach jest podobny. Wygoda zarówno kierowcy jak i pasażera jest podobna. Jedyna różnica którą podałeś to grzanie w tyłek które można dodać akcesoriami. Odnośnie tele-lever - tutaj moje odczucia są wręcz przeciwne - mniej czuję hamowania bez nurkowania - mam wrażenie iż jestem oderwany od asfaltu i nie czuję tego co dzieje się na styku koła z asfaltem. Moment obrotowy o którym mówisz iż jest dostępny w GS wcześniej i mocniej ma swoje zalety ale i wady , serio przy niskich prędkościach i powiedzmy 3 bieg na GS lub wyżej - dodanie gazu spowoduje początkowo szarpnięcie na boki tym motocyklem a dopiero później przyspieszenie i to też nie jakieś oszałamiające, XR w takim przypadku zamruczy basowo i równo zacznie przyspieszać dając pewność prowadzenia, wyobraź Sobie taką sytuację na zakręcie i częściowym złożeniu, naprawdę miałem taką okazję zbadać na GS wraz z żoną jako plecakiem i nie było mi do śmiechu na GS. Składanie się w zakręty - jasne GS z racji niskiego środka ciężkości chętniej kładzie się w zakręt, chętniej też na nim się złoży do końca po przekroczeniu pewnej granicy (tu trzeba uważać aby zaleta nie stała się wadą przy większych złożeniach). Dźwięk silnika w GS który podałeś - dla ucha kierowcy jest jeszcze znośny, niestety dla pasażera jeśli nie masz kufrów a wydech jest fabryczny , daje się mocno we znaki i bez zatyczek pasażerka mówi zdecydowane dość. Mam kolejną generację XR obecnie, miałem też okazję przejechać GS ponad 1000km w 2 dni zwiedzając Nasze góry i parę zakrętów na Jurze Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej, także szybkie podróżowanie po S8, osobiście więcej mi w GS przeszkadzało niż zachęcało , pomimo presji otoczenia które zasiada na zwykłych GS i ADV . Wolę większe spalanie i czasami zajrzenie do łańcucha (wierze w nowy łańcuch MEndurance) niż wystające cylindry i haczący czasem wał (tak , czuć to na podnóżkach jak przeszkodę poprzeczną... o czym wielu riderów od GS nie wspomina). Lubię adrenalinę i odkręcanie manetki, wiem też czemu Ty nie lubisz QS w GS bo tam po prostu On nie działa - to tak jakby zmieniać biegi przy pomocy młota 20 kg ! w XR różnica jest ogromna !. W GS QS działa sensownie do około 3,5krpm później to już jest poza skalą doznań .. ;)
Dzięki za podzielenie się spostrzeżeniami. Część z elementów emocjonalnych - a właściwie wszystko postrzegane jest w przypadku motocykli emocjonalnie - są subiektywne. Pytanie wtedy sprowadza się w zasadzie do dwóch rzeczy. Pierwsza to ilu osobom wydaje się podobnie, ale to jak z demokracją... dla dowolnej innej osoby nic to nie zmienia. A druga to właśnie jak to przekłada się na konkretną osobę. Generalnie GS jest uznawany za wygodniejszy i dla mojego tyłka on jest istotnie nieco wygodniejszy. Dla Twojego może być identyczny :). Dźwięk XR akurat mi również wydaje się bardziej znośny niż boxera, który mnie męczy i wcale mi się nie podoba. Z kolei jeśli chodzi o jakiekolwiek szarpanie GS-em na boki, to ono ma miejsce tylko na postoju podczas przegazowania i to już trudniej jest pojąć. Gdyby wał zrobiony był z plastiku, albo wahacz był z plastiku, to może wszystko by się gięło na boki, ale to nie pierwszy wał w historii BMW, więc mało prawdopodobne. Opis QS bardzo mi się podoba i to coś nowego - bardzo ładnie powiedziane! Teraz nadchodzi ciekawy czas, bo pomału wygląda na to, że nowy GS powinien być zaprezentowany. Być może pewne elementy zostaną zmienione, może BMW nas czymś zaskoczy. Z drugiej strony z racji popularności i uwielbienia dla niego u tak wielu kupujących, rewolucji trudno jest się spodziewać. Ale czas zdecydowanie ciekawy! Jeszcze raz dzięki za feedback!

Does the XR have an enduro mode? Didn't notice you mention that, and if it doesn't, then how could it possibly be considered an adventure bike?

@Bikelife gave a correct answer - XR has no enduro mode nor enduro capabilities and yeah, it wasn't meant for that at all. However, the comfortable, upright position is a huge plus in my opinion - unlike sitting on any sports bike. Very interesting and unique.
Brakuje jeszcze tylko BMW R1250RS do porównania. Może warto o tym pomyśleć bo może nie w Polsce ale w Stanach podobno całkiem dobrze się sprzedają więc dużo ludzi chętnie by taki test zobaczyli
RS to ciekawy sprzęty i rzeczywiście często widzę tu pytania o niego. Z R1200RS miałem okazję spędzić trochę czasu i finalnie stwierdziłem, że to maszyna dla fana boxerów. Dzięki za podpowiedź!

When you choose a bike you do it with ur heart not with ur head!
I ride the XR because my heart is with inline 4 sound and feel the super sport behaviour..
but doing 500km a day for 5 days in a row is not something that is will enjoy.. So an XR is the right bike for me...
I don't think you can put the GS and the XR head to head.... It will be like putting a donkey to horse.. Lol...
As long as we enjoy any vids about motorbikes...we are good... Ride safe ✌️
People still consider these two so I believe that it’s beneficial to analyze them head-to-head still.
I recently sold my 2018 R1200 GS. For me, the size and weight was getting a bit much, also it just seemed too agricultural to me. I've had both 3 and 4 cylinder bikes and have found I just like the smoothness of those engines. I must admit though that the GS certainly was comfortable. I'm considering an XR, but not sure if I will like the handling if it feels heavy in the twisties.
After mentioning 4 cylinders, perhaps it would make sense to check out Kawasaki Versys 1000? Its engine is amazingly smooth, sounds great and feels comfy enough despite shorter suspension travel. Not the best for twisties though. But the XR isn't the best here either. That might leave you with a Triumph Tiger 1200 and its 3-cylinder engine.
@@VToldsMotoShow I’m looking to get something lighter, possibly getting a naked bike that can be fitted with accessories to make it comfortable for longer rides (screen, heated grips, etc. ). At present, I’m seriously considering a 2023 Yamaha MT-09 SP.
Anyone with a GS has found validation.... But the real question is: which bike makes you want to get on and ride it. No doubt he GS is a dependable adventure bike (like a Toyota Camry) just not inspiring to throw the leg over and put a smile on your face.
Oh, Toyota Camry analogy was a bit cruel. I wouldn't go that way but rather put it this way: Range Rover or a Lamborghini Urus.

Good video but one big mistake. You can go on a big trip of few thousands kilometers with XR without problems with chain meintenance.
Cobra Nemmo2 and M type of chain which you can order as option will give you lots and lots of kilometers with no special chain maintenance so you can feel that you have shaft and not a chain😉
I've heard of that but I'm skeptical. But yup, there are ways of keeping the chain properly lubricated with aftermarket devices.

I can confirm. No special chain maintenance on long roads. Cobra Nemmo2 does its job fine.

I’m a GS owner but I’m looking for something a bit more sporty. I don’t want a sports bike because I’m 193cm tall😅, I hope the XR will do it for me
Try a KTM then - both S and R variants of a 1290 Super Adventure. Or a Ducati Multistrada V4 even though I personally am not a fan of it and hate its short gearing. But being 193 cm tall, it may be worth taking a look at these too ;)

It was Warsaw, Poland.
XR is far and away the better machine for type of riding I do. The GS is a true off road capable machine. The XR is a gentleman's sport bike and is not a true off road machine at all. The XR ticks all the boxes I am after.
Yup, that's all correct and if an XR suits your preferences better, then that's great and it's a clear path for you.
Two very different bikes. By comparison with the XR the GS is a heavy, slow but super comfortable bike
I tested both & found the GS much easier and more comfortable. I’m 6.2 & don’t like the riding position or engine on the XR

The seat of the XR is really uncomfortable. Pushes you forward into the tank. Terrible!

i owned both bikes and i can tell you that even if the gs is overrall slower, the gs his way scary and fun to ride.
It's a good way to put it. I also find the GS extremely fun to ride.
The XR is a very top heavy bike. The GS actually feels lighter.
Gs feels lighter on low speeds because of its weight distribution, same for xr feeling top heavy.
Its what they were built for: crank it up to high speeds and the xr starts feeling sharp and nimble.
Yes, we know you love the GS. Yes, we’ve heard you make these comparisons before. Maybe review a different bike? On it’s own merits? Without explaining why it’s inferior to the GS?
I love almost all of them in the circumstances that they were specifically built for. Each one has its edges somewhere else and it's worth knowing that, and therefore comparing. What bike would you like to get a review of instead of an XR?

for me xr all the way! i like sport style bikes dont litke tanks in street otherwise buy a k1600. like power and light as possible and thin go between cars

Nothing beats the pleasure of immediate torque.GS wins hands down.
In terms of torque there's indeed pretty much nothing that matches a GS.

Take the CAT off the XR and the exhaust "wakes up" and that is confirmed! I have both, one for when I feel like riding a sport bike(XR) and one when I feel like touring(GS) for long distances.
I dream of having enough $ to not choose 1 or the other😂
The one downside I still see with the XR is the fact, that you need the high revs/speeds to feel the punch. That means you are always driving at illegal speeds, even here in Germany. Cause lets face it, driving on the Auitobahn is the most boring thing ever on a motorcycle. The Boxer engine can´t give you the same joy as the 4 cylinder in high revs, but at least you can use its power. Just looking at your short driving examples, there is not a single moment on the XR, where you seem to stick to the speed limits (not blaming you, absolutely understand it, would do the same). That is why most likely I will shoot for the RS or the Super Duke GT. If I had a race track near by, different story I guess. But I live close to the Alps, there torque takes the win all day.
Good points, and I myself would be very interested in a Super Duke GT for that same reason of useful power availability. I know from other large KTMs that this engine is full of fire also down low, so it should be doing the job in this regard.
Its just a matter if preferences only..what the heck if u like the xr go for it if u like the gs go for it... if u have more money buy both..chill✌🏻

I testrode a 1250 GS from 2021 two weeks ago. 19.000 km all packages for 16 k euro.
Brought it back after 15 min. I really wanted to like it and to buy it. But the engine was vibrant above 4 k as fuck. The sound of the boxer sucked big time and QS was a good joke. I wonder why the bike is so hyped...
I dislike thhe needle. Hard to see actual speed as fast as digital

XR is indeed a great bike. But BMW really screwed up the seat. It is just horrible.

And S1000RR weighs less than S1000R.
