      My top pick right now is the Tiger 1200 GT Pro/Explorer because it weighs a bit less (I'm transitioning from a 750 bike) thus allowing for a bit more versatility but now I'm wondering... can't wait for the full review!

      I’m 2021 RT owner and I totally agree with you, except brakes. I would like to have more powerful and crisp brakes, especially when I ride with my wife. But I have Hayes brakes installed. All the rest is awesome and you forgot to tell about fuel mileage. This bike is very efficient. I usually spend 5-5,5 liters per 100 km and i am not really slow, one day i was riding with neighbors and they are slow, so i had 4,7 liters consumption for such big bike!

      Great review, thanks Ian, I consider boxer engine the safest to ride, It protects legs better than any other bike if you hit a car and if you slide on the road falling down…it happend to me and I was not trapped under the bike. I own a 1250gs and I also love the hill assist feature…while taking a photo or checking phone or setting something on the bike you have free hands and legs and you’re not bothered by pulling any brake. Cheers from Italy!

    I have this bike (2022) and it’s everything he said…and more. It really does handle that well. As to the radar cruise control - I agree that a motorcycle rider should never sit in a fixed position behind a car for a prolonged period - but to his point, it’s not to be used as a default mode of riding - it’s to reduce fatigue on long rides. This bike is designed for touring, and all-day riding can be draining (fatigue is very dangerous) - this helps recharge energy and should only be used for that purpose and for limited periods.

      3 second gap, you know some jack wagon is going to pull in there. and if the cruise is set at 82 I want to go 82. He is in the center lane, lanes on both sides are moving by at a prtty good rate. Not a safe situation IMO. I had adaptive cruise on my truck and hated it - most worthless feature ever.

    Great video Ian! I recently did a skills class/track day. One of my classmates was on the previous generation of this bike. I witnessed firsthand the massive performance envelope of this bike. Everything from low-speed gymkhana work to tire-blistering lap times. It has SO much more than most riders can use and WAY more than is usable on public roads. 😮

    Wow! This machine really takes care of so many of the"little annoyances" of touring, especially two-up riding - handling luggage, lighting, and adaptive suspension. Great information vid. I have a 2019 R1250RT, it doesn't have the adaptive cruise but has everything else mentioned. This bike is so much fun to ride whether its on a long distance trip or out riding with a friend on Sunday. Performance is awesome and it sounds awesome when its being revved out. It also doesn't feel like a 600lb bike and handles very well. I do an annual long distance trip and this bike is perfect for that. I will say one needs to replace the stock seat as after 150 miles I HAD to get off the bike as my butt was hurting. I bought a custom seat from Sargent Seats and it transformed the bike's comfort. I highly recommend it if you buy this bike. The only negative for me, is the ever increasing and high cost of maintenance at the dealerships. Service intervals are every 6K miles. The smaller services at 6K mile (18K etc.)intervals are now up to $430 and this is just an engine oil and filter change and inspections. The large service at every 12K miles (24K miles etc.) is now up to $1040 which in my opinion is a total rip off. I drive a MB E450 wagon with a 6 cylinder twin turbo engine and the large services for that are only about $879. No idea how my twin cylinder BMW bike costs more to service than my MB wagon.

    It is the handling of these bikes that make them so great. When you sit in the saddle for a while, you never get sick of the buzz when you hit the twisties. The modes are well chosen and as Ian says, this is the best tourer. Not an off road machine by any means but if most of your travels are highway oriented, what a great balance between comfort and performance. Another good review....

  • @all8849
    @all8849 9 місяців тому +7

    Great review Ian! I have the 2022 RT and I absolutely love it. Its an expensive bike but you get what you pay for in this case. Its my first bike with the tele lever suspension and I am quite impressed. The bike feels very stable with little to no front dive even under heavy breaking. I was looking for a motorcycle with good power, handling and wind protection. I do about 60% twisties and 40% highway and The RT fits all my needs. I thought the electric windshield was a bit gimmicky at first but now would have a hard time going without. I could say the same for many of the features on this bike.

    Great to see you testing non-ADV bikes Ian and applying your characteristic analysis - more of the same pls! I swapped my ‘23 GSA for this. Much prefer the dynamics and front-end feel of the shorter wheelbase and 17” wheel. I am tall with 36” inside leg. Yes the knees are a bit more bent but I’ll take that all day. Also mitigated by the high seat option which I have. Weather protection is vastly superior too allowing more months riding p/a. If you don’t go off road this really is the most comprehensive do it all bike money can buy. Best. G.

    I agree with you on all points, especially the handling. I own a 2023 RT and ride every Sunday up in the Malibu hills with a couple of friends who ride Panigales. This bike handles like a beast. I ride with the panniers off to save weight and to filter easier and its taken me a few months to really trust it, but I can ride it pretty fast. Its a little heavy, but so comfortable on the freeway to and from the hills. The two main competitors are the BMW S1000 XR and the Ducati Multistrada V4 (particularly the Pikes Peak), but I chose the RT in case I do want to travel. I will just throw the bags on and fill the tank and go. Looking forward to your full review.

    I am the original owner of a 09 Kawasaki Concours 14. It has been great. My bike is old school with no tech. I generally keep vehicles for a very long time. I like the RT but wonder how well all that tech will weather once out of warranty. Thank you for the review. Your content is excellent.

    • @steveh7108
      @steveh7108 9 місяців тому +12

      Even under warranty you still have to find a dealer when something goes wrong with that Tech. And BMW is the worst as far as a good dealer Network. You won't often find yourself well over 100 miles from any dealer.
      Even my 2013 k1600 GTL was a great bike but you had to go to a dealer just to turn off the engine light after you change the oil yourself.
      I still think BMWs are some of the greatest riding bikes there is, but they also had some of the most recalls of any motorcycle out there. And without a decent dealer Network, it can be a major headache.

      Thats a philosophy question. There is no choice on newer bike, everything is computerised. On my 2015 RT you can connect your mobile but on my older 2004 Ducati ST3 it´s completely locked. So shall we go back to carburated bikes? Some do and I understand that.

    I enjoyed this first video. I bought my 21 RT in July 2022 and have accumulated 20,201 miles throughout the great Texas Hill Country and Big Bend area. You nailed it when you said this is the best all around bike as it does all I want, which would require 2 or 3 other bikes to accomplish well. Myy everyday ride is without the luggage, making it lighter and more flickable for the twisties. I love this bike and after getting off, I look back and go wow! I look forward to you follow up video on this RT.

    Thanks Ian I’m looking forward to the rest of your review. The RT is in a league of its own however this is reflected in it’s hefty price tag. I wasn’t quite in the position to purchase new so went for a 2019 approved used from BMW. It came fully serviced with a 2 year warranty and saved myself around 10k GBP. I absolutely love it 👍

      You can get a really nice R1200RT for a good price - for a song, if you'll go for an oil/air cooled.
      But a lot of BMW dealerships won't service anything over 10 years old, which partly explains it.

    I've got a 2013 R1200RT, the last of the air/oil cooled boxer engines. There is so much of what you describe on the 1250 that applies to my 1200. The windshield, brakes, adjustable suspension, etc. Of course, the electronics controlling all that is far better than on my bike but I have to say, my R1200RT is by far the best touring bike I've owned. It's the first bike I've owned that, like you pointed out, I can ride in total calm. I've owned a Goldwing, a Harley Ultra Classic, ST1100, and a 1983 R80RT and none of them came close to my R1200 in terms of wind protection, even after multiple windshield mods. I'd love to update to the 1250 but that's not an option right now. Maybe some day. Then again, my 1200 is still going strong so I have no real reason to spend the money.

    Ian, great review as ever. I’ve had RTs from the early R100 series, a K100RT, R1150RT and finally a 2005 R1200RT. I liked it until I rode a GSA which for me at just 5’8” showed how cramped (or sporty) the riding position is. I did the deal there and then.

    Hi Yan! This is truly true, I’ll be looking forward to your extended video about the RT but I just want to say for now that even comparing it to the BMW K1600, the RT has details that converts it in the ultimate all around bike that you can have exception made to the more technical off-road trails for which the bike is not designed to endure.

    That removable saddle bag is slick! Maybe it's nothing new, but it is to me. Last time I rode was in the early 80s so this was a fun vid. What a great choice to have! That windshield is crazy cool. Must be a blast to be on the design team. I'm a big fan of BMW, been driving one or another (car) since the 70s, with a '72 2002 in the garage right now. It's not a bike, but it's darn fun and pure.

    It's been more than twenty years since I had this conversation with an experienced biker. He reminded me of the people that take advantage of the dynamic geometry of most telescoping systems. The Japanese tried mechanically linking the brake system into the fork damping on my Nighthawk S, but with very little effect. I really liked the Levers on my Oilhead, but I think I could work with the bikes braking dynamics on a Norden for instance.

    Always looking forward to watch your reviews . I find there are very few Y. Tubers like you that really know what they talk about. I purchased my new R 1200 RT 2007. I'm almost 74 . The last couple of years I was thinking about reducing to a lighter bike but when I ride the RT I want to keep it. Lets not talk about pulling the bike out of the garage. Of course one can't compare my RT with the R 1250 RT version . Many actual features though started with the BMW s like mine . Of course they are not perfect , but who wants them to.😊

  • @Slowcalcones

    The RT really is such a great bike. So many features. It rides through mountain roads like a sport bike. Can do 16 foot u turns and it feels very nimble at low speed as well. You really don't feel like you're riding a large touring motorcycle. It is such a well rounded bike that's built to put down some miles but has such a surprising fun factor too.

    I own the 2022 RT and just finished a 6000km bike trip on it.
    The review is bang on.
    Absolutely love the adaptive cruise control. Game changer.
    I have it fully loaded riding 2 up and the electronic auto adjusting suspension is much appreciated.
    To be honest my only critiques would be that it would be nice to have reverse. When it's fully loaded up reversing can be tough. When it's just me and no luggage it's no problem.
    Also the BMW navigation system is not quite as good as Google maps and has screwed me a couple times. But I do love having the nav integrated into the display.
    Besides that it's perfect. Love the power and performance. Absolute joy to ride. I don't see myself trading my RT in anytime soon.

    How does this handle the twisties compared to the r1250gs/Gsa? I currently have a Gsa and to me it feels like it handles better then the fjr1300 and concours 14 that I’ve had in the past, it just doesn’t have as much top end power as they had.
