Thom's vocal performance on Fake Plastic Trees is inspired by Jeff Buckley. They went to see him live in a small venue in North London and were so blown away that they went straight back to the studio afterwards. As legend has it Thom sang the song twice then broke down in tears.

“My Iron Lung” was a song they wrote about the trap of having the song “Creep” as the defining song of their early career. Like an iron lung, creep was both life-support and a prison, they felt.

Fake Plastic Trees was indeed re-recorded after Thom and the gang went to an intimate Jeff Buckley concert. He then began to fiddle more with sharp changes into his falsetto and that's the early maturity you're sensing. Your father nailed it.

My Mum is a very cool person aside from going to Queen's last gig (with Freddie) and a bunch of other notable bands and singers, she actually hung out with a couple of boys in Thoms year in school, she went to a all girls, they where at a all boys, the schools are often linked in plays, balls and other social events, so she was a tomgirl and get on well with them, hung around outside school and were really good friends.
They were are day pupils like I imagine RH were iv never asked her about it properly with regards to radiohead, the correct time hasn't arisen I find it slightly embarrassing like I love radiohead there my favourite band and I relate to some of there songs on a real personal level (The Bends especially and OKC to a slightly lesser extent helped me alot during that awkward phase of age 17-19 and it was my first time finding my own music that resonated personally and independently other than the beatles) but don't want to expose myself even though I'm 21 now, but it's so wierd it's like Ed O'Brien has a very similar accent to my mum aswell, especially as I'm not from that area, the same as my mum.
It's a bizarre connection, ages ago I looked in a school book online and the blokes which my mum knew are in the rugby 1sts team and rowing, Thoms mentioned in the theatre section in the same book! (wierdly with a diffrent spelling Tom not Thom) but I also know some of them were more quiet and academic and theatrical like what Thom and the others were like. She was quite surprised when she found out Tom Hollander went there aswell (who was also mentioned in the theatrical part of the book on the same page as Thom IIrc). The school has quite alot of famous alumni but even so its fascinating to me. I'll ask her at somepoint, it'll be a intresting thing to see I know she likes pink floyd, Paul Simon etc but I bet she only knows radiohead as the creep band and even less of the idea that they were formed there but I'll have to see what she says maybe she does know partially etc...
She also used to hang about with hardcore 80s goths in college as a woman who was the complete opposite in floral patern dresses but that's another story.....

BTW: interesting snippet: 'The Bends' (the song, the title track) sounds like a sort of straight ahead throwback to the sound of their first album because it was a song written in that time period but held over for their second album. They could have recorded it for Pablo Honey if they'd chosen to. The band has ALWAYS done this. Songs can end up on albums DECADES after they were first written (True Love Waits for example). But typically they will be metamorphosed in style to fit with what the band is currently doing (Nude on In Rainbows is another example, which dates back to OK Computer time).

Younger Radiohead fans and maybe even global Radiohead fans play down this album, especially in comparison to OK Computer (which was only recorded 2 years later than this BTW), but actually for Radiohead's contemporary generation, especially in the UK, it is still THE Radiohead album. I personally continued to listen to the band over the years and my musical taste evolved so it is not my personal favourite but there is a generation of people to whom this is the epitome of the band, and it is an album they love. It's an 'indie' rock classic. Many people in the UK stopped following the band with Kid A, which is ironically when America first started picking up on them, so there are really two groups of Radiohead fans: 90s fans and post Kid A fans.
You will hear mainly from the 'post' fans (or people like me that continued with the band) because the 90s fans of course are not watching videos like this or talking about the band online, but be aware that this album is the most loved with MANY. The Internet has a way of distorting perceptions of things like this beecause it biases what you hear to the opinions of the people inclined to be on the internet talking about music. ie. younger people of a certain temprement / personality. This group will shout from the rooftops about Kid A. Many Radiohead fans of the time HATED it, few loved it immediately, and many stopped following the band and didn't come back. I know many people like that. These people will be dismissed by the Internet community but they exist in large numbers.
The 3 biggest Radiohead albums are, and probably always will be OK Computer, Kid A and this. I'm not saying they're objectively 'the best', they're what the most people know / love. This is not a minor Radiohead album of interest just as a curiosity.

There were a lot of bands putting albums out at the time, but "The Bends" was just astounding to me. Thanks for the video guys. I, personally, have always loved Radiohead's first two albums. Not as much as a lot of their other albums but still hold them both in high regard. As far as British alternative rock goes, they're classics and have a lot of seriously great songs. Plus, these guys were really young at the time and just starting out.
I, honestly, never understood a single ounce of hate either of the albums got. Just because they're a different genre, and the band continued to evolve and change over time, doesn't mean Pablo Honey and The Bends are anything short of great. I do admit Radiohead have better albums but I never disliked their early work, at all.
The hate towards them didn't even start until about a decade after they came out. They were both beloved albums all throughout the 90's and even into the 2000's. I honestly attribute people bashing them to ignorance. Back when people had a far better understanding of music it simply didn't exist. Once the whole social media obsessed, millennial era began is when you really started hearing it. It's as if a few ill informed people said they hated the albums, other ill informed people read it and wanted to jump on the bandwagon. Whenever I hear someone say "those albums suck" (or something along those lines) I ask them to name a couple songs off each album and they, literally, never can.
Again, their first two albums are simpler and less evolved but they are by no means bad albums. On their own they stand up against any of the other British alternative albums from the time.
