The Meaning of The Bends by Radiohead

- This is my first video essay/analysis about an album where I talk about the meaning and the beauty of it. I started this series with The Bends by Radiohead because it's one of the best 90s albums and it also has Just, Street Spirit and Fake Plastic Trees. Also I hate Creep. Enjoy!

Bro got the bends about making this video
I'm literally Thom Yorke
He deep dived the album
Looking forward to your next video … No ‘pressure’. 😉🤿
@@Krysiss He's literally me
the first radiohead album i listened to from front-to-back
same, I would listen to it everyday when I was in my way to school
"immerse your soul in love" is definitely the best way to end this great album
‘Creep’ doesn’t “suck ass” it’s a genuinely decent song with insane catchiness, summit and emotional drive to it.
Is it in there top 25 songs or so? Probably not, but it’s still a great song.
nuh uh
@@Krysiss He is true. Probably my least favorite song from them but this doesn't mean that it's bad.
despite being overrated and overplayed, i think creep is fucking awesome man, it's a great song, just not as much as their songs later on.
@@ja-migo I agree
My Iron Lung might just be one of my top Radiohead song, purely because of the line "This is our new song, just like the last one, a total waste of time, my iron lung" Like Thom just takes away all the metaphor and symbolism and said right to our face that he hates creep
Can't blame him tbh
@@Krysiss It's pretentious to hate Creep. If you are a songwriter you can appreciate the songwriting genius of that song. Although the climax of the song is mainly lifted from the verse in the "Air That I Breath" by the Hollies (in Creep "She's running out again..") "Creep" still has its own life. Even though the chord structure are almost the same as the Hollies song and like priorly mentioned the middle 8 vocals in Creep has almost the same melody as in "the Air that I Breath" But the verse and the Chorus in Creep" is completely original, and masterfully written - Thom didn't hate the song because of the songwriting. He hated it because of what it brought, and how the label was pressuring them to come up with another Creep. Just like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Nirvana. Kurt didn't hate the song before the fame, then he wouldn't had put the song on the album. the same applies with "Creep"
@@Atlas65 it's not about pretentiousness, I genuinely don't like the song, I can't get over how cringy the lyrics are
@@Krysisshow tf do you cringe at them? I love the lyrics
@@ToniToniChopaaa people can have opinions
i swear everything single track on the bends is just., (haha) from planet telex, the bends, high & dry, fake plastic trees (best song), bones, (nice dream), just, my iron lung, bullet proof… i wish i was, black star, sulk, and street spirit (fade out)…
The bends and Ok Computer are two of the best albums of all time. What an incredible band!
they have so many perfect albums
In Rainbows n Kid A
I really love High and Dry specifically because of how simple it sounds but the meaning hits very close to home for me. I'm in some serious burnout because I've pushed so damn hard and I did lose it
I thought that bones was about an old man talking about aging and the pain of being old. I interpreted the line where he talks about how he used to be peter pan as a metaphor of how he used to be so young and energetic. I also connected it to peter pan being a symbol of youth.
yea I can see that too
wow... I've listen to the bends album many times and still get mind-blown when learning more about the songs lyrical meanings and messages. Super entertaining and informative!
Thank you
This is too good for 1K views
thank youu
@@Krysiss deserves way more
for a video with less than 300 likes this is very high quality. stand proud, you are strong
thank you
Im 14 and this was deep 👆😔
U gotta make this a series man I would watch every episode.
I prefer to hear people talk about Radiohead than listening to them. Please, don't stone me, I'm just not into them.
Everyone has their taste but I feel like if you listen to them enough you'll start liking them
Great work! Can't wait till the HTTT video.
probably gonna go through the albums chronologically if I make this a series
@@Krysiss I loved the video. You need to make this a series.
Good shit, hope you keep making more of these videos, as someone who is getting into radiohead this is great stuff
thank you, i'll try to cover all their main albums
Kudos for the subtitles. I personally don’t have any trouble understanding you at all- but I’m a native speaker of English. I have lots of friends who are ESL speakers though and they often complain they have trouble understanding even perfect English sometimes depending on if it’s in a foreign accent though, so they’d super appreciate the extra time you took to transcribe the script for this video
Yea they don't really take me too long and they just make the video better. It's nice to see that people are finding them helpful.
Please dude keep doing stuff like this, I loved it
will do, thankss
it was confirmed fake plastic was actually about consumerism, but i guess its nice when art has other interpretations
there's definitely a story there about love too but Thom's lyrics always have a lot of interpretations, thats why I love them so much
@@Krysiss true true
do you have a source that confirms that?
Well done man, love the video !
thank you
Great work❤
Perhaps it's a trivial thing to comment about, but I really enjoyed the way you read that comment during your explanation of Black Star. I laughed really hard when I heard that.
lmaoo as soon as I saw that comment I knew it would be perfect for the video
@@Krysiss so appropriately inappropriate, right!? It definitely served to illustrate your point well.
Great video!! And yeah I think we all would really love more albums.
Something like Lizzy Stardust or are you experienced would be nice
Ziggy Stardust? Yea that's definitely on the list
Can't wait for more.
Literally started falling into a deeper love for The Bends, oh no, I'm becoming a Radiohead fan.
It's over for me boys.
say bye to social interactions
@@Krysiss can’t say goodbye to something I never had
Creep is so underrated by Radiohead fans
The song The Bends was written back before Pablo Honey came out. It was originally called The Benz. Knowing this, we can't really say it was written about life after skyrocketing fame. I do love this album. I listen to it when I need that "90's" sound. I love how young Thom's voice is.
I just thought they changed the lyrics after they released Pablo Honey but I don't know
@Krysiss and they may have some. I feel like I read they had even played it live before they released Pablo Honey. I'm sure some RH fan knows more about it than I do.
i love this album so much
samee
Its hard to compared the love for their albums. Kid A and OK Computer are absolutely amazing, so is The Bends but just differently
I hate when people compare Radiohead albums for no reason because they have completely different messages and sounds. That's why I wanna make this a series so there's a bigger discussion than just "this album good, this album bad"
Nice video!
thankss
This is the best video I’ve watch on the bends I think so many people gloss over it because they want to get to ok computer,kid-A in rainbows ect. But this is arguably a top 3 in there discography and Its truly a alt rock utopia album
thank you, I was suprised when I saw thay barely anyone has talked about this album on UA-cam
@@Krysiss it’s a shame
I always thought interpreting My iron lung as being just about Creep quite limiting. For me it's about modern life in general and about how we all go about our day despite feeling something is way off about the world around us
better than kid a and moon shaped pool ive believed this my whole life since the moment i was born i was born to listen to the bends on repeat
thanks dua lipa
Don’t listen to these stupid hate comments. I loved this form of video and I am looking forward to seeing more of these types of videos 🔥
the comments have been nice on this video luckily but thanks lol
great video 👏
Thank you!
I love it
Im not the type to say if this is really a way of claiming or just cope esque words on trying to say this stands out or not in some shape form or manner but this album is the definition of the embodiment/epitome of a real human being with flaws and faults to some perfect quintessential extent yet to convey a projecting imperfectly raw unwillingly thought out conceptual album for the majority of people who think this is/isn't the pinnacle of their musical career plus the way you or in general look at it but for me this album is the real but profound deal of radiohead's brilliance on how they execute certain ways on creating their talented craft indirectly immaculate in my opinion as if god spoke to them to make this type of thing for their own fame scrutiny's sake i guess.
The 8bit is sick btw
What are your thoughts about Enter Shikari?
Plz do more of this
will do
Almost makes me want to do a Dagoth Ur Breaks Down Radiohead Albums
0:13 What do the flags in the rankings mean?
no idea, just found a random review on google
Great video, mate! Happy to be corrected, but wasn't that Street Spirit quote from Thom actually fake?
"This quote goes back to a defunct post on followmearound.com. Apparently the excerpt originally comes from the book Radiohead: From a Great Height, transcribed from an interview which could probably be identified if someone looked through the bibliography of this book." This is what people were saying on reddit but I kept seeing this quote everywhere so I thought I should include it, not sure if it is 100% real but it does describe the song.
also im glad you liked the video :)
@@Krysiss totally agree that it perfectly describes the song. Whether it’s real, or not, it’s very believable because it resonates with how many of us feel about the song.
Good video! Keep it going
Thanks, will do!
Their only genuinely mainstream alternative album, slaps from Planet Telex to Street Spirit (Fade Out)
bro censored depression
Awesome video btw
I am eliminating depression from this world
thom once said just was about a narcissistic friend he had to let go, because he was too much.
i guess that makes part of the lyrics more literal
Great vid but why did you censor depression at 13:51??
UA-cam doesn't like it when you discuss "sensitive topics". It's really annoying but I can't do anything about it.
@@Krysiss ah ok
Planet Telex 🔥🔥
Can you make a video about bôa
good idea actually
If you're going to interpret what ThM's song expresses, I suggest you use a more time-accurate footage, preferably near the time the song/album was released. The footage from the 2000s Planet Telex concert while the song is made around a decade ago would be less applicable as proof of your interpretation. However, the whole album tracks interpretation is good.
I see where you're coming from but it's pretty hard to find high quality footage of concerts from that time. The whole video would be in 240p if I did that. Also Radiohead worldwide blocked my video when I used their music videos lol. Anyways I'm glad you liked the interpretations, I think that's the important part.
@@Krysiss Ah, my bad for not realizing the copyright issue.
Did I get this right? High and Dry was written by Tom before the band success, but it talks about it?
The song was written before it but the lyrics were changed to talk about his success
The Bends is one of the albums
it is an album
please please do more
will do 🙏🙏
I dont understand your opinion on High and Dry its a beautiful song and one of my favorites of all time
idk just doesn't do it for me I guess
Link for the eight bit bends album.

You could literally type your comment into the UA-cam search and it is the top result.
8:19 that’s literally my friend from school!!! Omg 😂
really? lmao
@@Krysiss yeh they sent me a message as they were shocked (they are an insane Radiohead fan)
Man sounds like High Boi
the bends was writtern before creep so isnt actually about their sudden success
high and dry was also written before creep but they just changed the lyrics after
The Bends? More like You're Bent
look who's talking
Wish High and dry wasn’t on the album. It’s the only blip.
0:37 PLEASE TALK ABOUT HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS. 10. OUT. OF. 10.
I will definitely try because it's like one my favourite albums ever but I can't really analize the lyrics on that one lmao
0:02 and already a lie 😔
Sorry but I just can not listen to Pablo Honey 😔
It is their 2 good album
Please do more of these…ok computer!!!!
I will definitely do one on Ok Computer and In Rainbows
@@Krysiss what about kid a?
yess, I just want to save up for a better mic so the videos come out better
@@Krysiss I think it sounds great but you’re the creator😂
@@Krysiss i understand mr video maker
Haven't watched the video yet but I'll share my opinion rq
WAY too many people praise OK Computer like it's the 2nd and 3rd coming of Jesus Christ and I feel that for the accessibility of The Bends for someone like me into Radiohead made it several tiers higher than OK Computer
Hail To The Thief is my #1 though
Anyway I'll watch the actual video now
can we get amnesiac lore ?
I need to look into it because I wanna make a video on Kid A/Amnesiac
I like Pablo Honey :(
HOW DARE YOU???
Imagine not having the bends smh.
First good album? Yeah
I really do like You and Anyone Can Play Guitar from Pablo Honey, but i can't say that it's a good album
8:18 is my girlfriend lol
my guy bring creep listener data using spotify wtf
Pablo Honey is a good album. It's diferent and more simple than Radiohead later works, but it has great songs. It don't deserve all this hate.
It does have some good songs but it's just not for me I guess
at least it’s not the worst radiohead album, that title goes to “king of limbs”
@@velvet-ambiance King of Limbs is awesome once you watch the in the basement video
@@leepicrandomaa only redeemable version of that album
@@velvet-ambiance The king Of Limbs is the only album that Godrich kind of screwed up it sounds robotic and sometimes kind of muted and mixed poorly. The basement session for TKOL is among Radioheads best work. Listen to Bloom and Little By Little and see the difference the organic instruments and the addition of Portishead drummer Clive Deamer makes that album swing like hell. The addition of the extra songs that are both great especially The Daily Mail fill the album out. I Dare any Radiohead fan to watch the whole session and say it's a bad album because it's not.
My favourite radiohead album the imperfection is what makes this album it inspired everything they became to be
Now do in rainbows
will do
no way you calling ok computer better then the best album in the world (the bends)
come on now
Hey, not all americans love Creep.
there's still hope
hate this talk about "best album" blablabla . its subjective.
I was just making a joke in the intro but yea I agree, it's all subjective, you can like whatever you want
I love The Bends and this video is great. But Creep doesn't suck dude, this is like annoying Radiohead fan 101 you're better than this
Half of Radiohead's fans love Creep and the other half hates it so I would get backlash anyways but it's just my personal opinion on the song. I think it's a bad portrayal of Thom's work, I'm not trying to be edgy
Sorry if I'm coming off too rude lol, I'm glad you liked the video
No way you have more subscribers than Misclick
lol
Creep is not a bad song stop telling yourself that it dosent make you cool
agree to disagree I guess
11th comment i think
thank you soldier
why do u bash the us sm bro 😭
I HATE THEM (jk just funny)
The first good album ? WTF ?!! Pablo Honey was great.
it was alright
Could you do a video about Weezer?
I'll do it just for you Weeztard45
Bro you gotta make another video about ok computer 🥹
Keep it up, man 💜
Will do!
