I'm 66 and I remember using the gum wrappers to make necklaces. Gosh the things we used to do. Thank you. I just recently got into making paper beads. I'm going to try this again. Thank you. 😊
when we were kids in the late 70's we did this with Wrigley's gum wrappers and made long chains we hung in the doors instead of beads. (not that I'm againg myself, LOL) would also make a great book mark.
Loved how you inked the edges of each strip. The finished look reminded me of a vintage map. ! It is so much fun to braid paper. I did those gum wrappers in the 60's. Thank you. I am inspired.
Oh, Laurel, 4-H was just a magical time for me as a kid - I loved it SO much - and that's also where I learned to sew! I can still sing the 4-H Pledge song and I bet you can, too! "I pledge my head to clearer thinking...my heart to greater loyalty...my hands to larger service and my health...to better living for my club, my community, and my country!" 🎶 Now that'll be in both our heads all day! I'm so glad to know you're a 4-H kid, too. Thanks for watching!
Oh these are adorable braided papers!!! I can't wait to give it a try. I was thinking of perhaps using a bit of watercolor or ink to color up some of the strips because I loved the way the map colors worked so well with the book pages. Then I could maybe coordinate some of the coloring used to make the braids match some of my projects. Here in Northeastern Nevada, Elko County, the kids are still very involved with 4-H. There is a big participation for the county fair each fall. And the high school has a very active FFA and Rodeo Club, but then we are a rural area. I don't believe there are nearly as many participants in 4-H in the more urban settings. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊 another fun idea.
@@annekenlon I've been lucky enough to have a couple of people in my life at different times that I could bounce ideas off of. But it's so much easier and more frequent now that UA-cam is around.
I’ll have to watch this later. But the zig zag pattern in the braided paper reminds me of how we used to fold stick gum wrappers and then hook them together to make chains. Of course they weren’t thick (wide) like your papers but that memory just jumped out at me when I saw the pattern. I’ll be back. ❤
Jenn, when you have a chance to watch it, you'll see that I have the exact same memory! I wasn't the one folding the gum wrappers, though, but my daughter was!
@@deannecaracciolo8045 I chewed gum and was always handing sticks out to kids. They aced their wrappers for me. I can sort of remember how to make them. But I don’t buy gum so much and am wondering if any still wrap them separately. Bazooka bubble gum and wrappers. I think we tire them in half to make chains. I know I had a very long chain - oh and my dad chewed a lot of gum too. Such memories!❤️
Our thrift shop sells children’s books for 10 cents each. Some of the colors are so beautiful. Their pages would be lovely with these braids. Love the idea. Great tutorial!
Hi Anne, just discovered your channel this week. Made your paper strip birds (need more practice on those, smile) and these braided strips. The braided paper strips make beautiful bookmarks which I then enclosed in packing tape. Love the inspirations! Thanks!
Thank you so much, Brenda! I really appreciate your joining me here. There is so much joy in junk journaling - whether you give it a try or not, I hope you'll enjoy the vibe! Have a great weekend!
Oh, my, yes - especially the Stampin' Up designer paper (of which I seem to have a vast amount) is a decent weight for folding - not as thick as card stock, not as flimsy as the advertising paper I used. Thanks for mentioning it!
@@annekenlon I forgot to ask - how long were your paper strips please, I know it probably doesn't really matter but I b thought your finished braid was a good size. TIA
Oh, I'm so glad it's still going strong. I absolutely LOVED 4-H and all the skills and experiences it brought me. I grew up in Auburn - home of the only stoplight in Nemaha County!
Anne the 3 parts of forgiveness for french braid deprivation: I forgive all people , I give them permission to forgive me, and I forgive myself...lol.....TFS YOU and your creations...as usual....❤B
Oh, Brian, I am literally laughing out loud. You'll be happy to know that I asked my now-adult daughter just yesterday if she felt deprived about my lack of French-braiding skills and she assured me she had never felt ill effects! What a relief!
Was thinking the same thing about the gum wrappers. But it was 60ish years ago for me.😊 I'm 67.
Yep, I was in Middle School in 1967 and we made the paper chains out of gum wrappers. We used to chew a lot of gum.

I was a proud 4Her with a grand champion Holstein heifer calf. Loved fair time! I'm now 70. My great niece is really doing well in 4H.

omg this technique could be great for bookmarks! Or even some jewelry statement pieces! Love this!
Yes, they're so nice and lightweight - and flat! - they are quite versatile! Thanks for watching!
What a fun and new-to-me idea! I bet you could extend the braid by gluing more strips at the ends and continuing. Thanks Anne!
You could absolutely do that! Thanks for watching!

I made the gum wrapper chain in the ‘70s. Mine was over twenty feet long. Dad chewed a lot of gum.

I wonder if it would work if the braid was made over a 1" wide strip of paper going down the middle?
Maybe so! Let's give it a try!
This is too cool
Thanks, Tina! I hope you have fun with it!
Would modpodge coat it well enough to protect the braid, in your opinion?
Wow, good question! Several thin coats could probably help a lot toward that end! I haven’t tried it, but it’s certainly worth giving it a go!
Vocal fry!! Usually only hear teens!❤
Thanks for the feedback!
