Anne, spray your old ink pads with water and watch them come back to life!!!! Please don't toss!!!!!! Love your ideas!!!!!!! Just using plain brown paper bags for journal pages is great. I love to write on that paper!!!!!
Hey, Betty! I do spray them occasionally - and you're right, it does extend the life of the pad for a while, at least. Yes, writing on the grocery bag paper is SO satisfying, isn't it? That's what I used for pages in my first junk journal three years ago! (when we were all housebound and had lots of grocery bags from curbside pickup!)
@@annekenlon My ink pad was a little dry when I was doing the scoreboard thing & I sprayed it (I think you mentioned Pam from the Paper Outpost & I learned to spray the pads from her) & kind of smeared the wet pad across one piece of scored paper & it came out pretty too.
Hello Anne. I also had you pop up in my feed this morning. I also Loved. The waxed paper technique it is so unique looking! Also liked the different sewing 🧵 stitches. Thanks for sharing the different techniques they are great!
Good afternoon. I am binge-watching because I am a new subby. I really enjoyed the wax paper technique, and the faux leather technique is one that I used with my third graders when I taught Elementary school. I'm a retired 32-year veteran teacher. Another idea to think about is spritzing the paper lightly with water. It helps to relax the paper a little easier so that anyone that has difficulty with crunching the paper with their hands would not have to press as hard. Little 8 year old hands have a hard time really squishing down the paper sometimes as well as seniors that have arthritis. Just a little something that may help those that do have dexterity difficulties. As a retired teacher I have to tell you I love your presentation, you keep things moving in a nice even way, your voice is very pleasant to listen to, and you don't dwell a long time after the idea has been presented and demonstrated instead of beating the horse to death for an hour. I predict you will have success with this channel.😊❤
What great tips about easier "squishing"! I'm thrilled to know you used this technique with your little folks. I knew it wasn't new! Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it.
I wish I could add a photo. I tried your scoring technique on a three different pieces and they are all so beautifully interesting. The first was on a small piece of printer paper I had left over that I had added a mix of ink sticks colors of browns, turquoise, and pinks/fuchsia. I scored the piece and ran my walnut ink pad heavily over the scoring. It made a beautiful piece. The second was a page out of an old book I am using to make my first journal. Cutting out pages to make room for the journal (a technique I found here on UA-cam). I decided to try your technique on one of the pages. The pages are a fairly thick off white with black ink instructions and pictures. I scored the page as you did, then used my walnut ink pad and heavily swiped it over the page. With this page I made an envelope like the one of your youth book, what a beauty it is. The pictures and writing became an interesting design to the page. The third I made as the first but on full card stock printer paper. Thank you, they are all so beautiful. I will also be using the wax paper surprise, I really like that one too.
Oh, what a LOVELY project you created - I can imagine it perfectly, even without a photo. I'm so honored that you're using one of these ideas for your first journal. I hope you get many more ideas here - many congratulations on making your book, and thank you for watching!
Perfect! As someone who likes to go Old School Junk for my journals and dig into the recycling bin, this right up my alley. Thank you. I am headed off to iron some waxed paper NOW.
This was chalk full of wonderful ideas! You are a great teacher and your presentation was right to the point! My kind of tutorial!!! Thanks for sharing!
You're so welcome. Yes, when I first started, I really watched Pam regularly and learned so much from her. She is fearless and just goes for it! Thanks for watching.
My favorite new to me idea was the waxed paper. The grocery handle #1 was good too. The other grocery bag handle comes in long rolls. I love it as a medium. My favorite project with it was weaving it around a long tube and making a wreath. I taught it for several years at a family conference. Leather conditioner does not seem to go rancid like some hair cream or hand cream can do. I used it on a TN cover and it looked really nice. Thanks for sharing all the other ideas, loving the wax paper one too.
Great tip on the conditioner, thanks! I've not had a problem with the hair conditioner turning on me, but then as I mentioned, I don't really use that step anymore. I've never tried hand cream - agree that I'd probably avoid that, as I've had some years-old hand creams go sour right in the tube, then you run across it in a drawer and try it and eeew! Thanks for watching!
Oh, Tim - he might as well have a direct line to our bank accounts! I honestly don't begrudge him a bit for building such a successful business, and his stuff is great quality, but I DO sometimes sigh when I realize how ubiquitous he has become! Thanks for chuckling with me - and thanks for viewing! Welcome!
Thank you so much! Yes, I'm also a card maker. The inking technique on the embossed cardstock is probably something you've already used! Thanks for watching!
So funny how suddenly someone that you’ve never heard of before just pops up in your feed, it seemed like your video popped up for quite a few of us. I love the wax paper idea, I have to try that. I don’t know if I have any paper bags but I’m going to try it on coffee dyed paper and see what it does. We used to make that faux leather look with grocery bags when I was a kid, 1000 years ago, after the horse and buggy brought us home from the grocery store, but we used shoe polish as the ink. Sounds like by using the hair conditioner it was almost a form of momigami where you put the lotion or hair conditioner all over the paper before you crumpled it up and then you crumple and crumple, and make it all soft and fabric like almost. 😊
So happy to have you aboard - and yes, this one surprised me that it caught on so strongly! I have a few of those "horse and buggy days" crafts in my repertoire as well (if you watch my "Triple Trio" page layout video, you'll see a real oldie-but-goodie). Thanks so much for watching!
Will she really share? My dear old cat Betty was also known for claiming paper bags as her own, and she wasn't terribly generous with them either! haha. I miss that old gal! Have fun reaching an agreement with your dear one, and enjoy crafting! Thanks for viewing!
I do spritz with water, which helps, but I'll have to check out that ink refresher. Leave it to Ranger to have a clever product we all need! Thanks for watching!
I'm so glad this popped up in my feed. I can't wait to try some of these techniques. I have done the one with the round paper handles before and that makes really fun paper.
Good morning 😁😁 I'm thrilled to meet you! You fell into my feed this early morning and I'm VERY glad! I love paper grocery bags in general, but now... 🤯 I've been doing Pam's faux leather for years but I've never seen any of the others. I LOVE the plaid, both sides have their appeal, right? I'm up early for a doctor's appointment... I'd much rather cancel that and just stay home and binge on your vids, but **sigh** I guess I really should get dressed and - you know - be the adult the world thinks I am and actually GO!! Greetings from your newest subbie in the southern California desert, MK 😁🌵😁
Oh, my, I'm so delighted I could be part of your morning! Hope your appointments went well and you could come home and craft! Thanks for watching, and welcome!
Hi Anne! I saved this video because I’m gonna try to make all of these ideas! I especially love the ironing on wax paper! WOW! I also love the leather look! IThank you for all of the ideas! I’ve been saving my handles from paper bags that I collect! I love your idea! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ❤
So neat! Laughed when you said, "We're gonna take a field trip." I'm new to your channel- already tried the scoreboard technique & can't wait to try the others, especially the wax paper one. I'll be back. Merry Christmas!
Hello fellow crafter👋 Thank you for sharing your ideas these are definitely a must try always looking to spruce up tags!🫶🏼 New subscriber here 👍 wishing you and your family A safe and Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas, Tim, right?! He does seem like a nice fellow, which I guess is good considering how dominant his business is! I like my Vagabond embossing/diecutting machine a lot.
Hi, Anne. Your channel just popped up on my feed this morning and I really liked your content. Especially the waxed paper technique. Also liked the look of the inked scored lines. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄

I just found your channel and subscribed after seeing this one video. I never do that, I usually check out the video list before I subscribe, but I loved this video so much that I broke my own rules!! I have already cut up a large paper bag while watching and I sent this video to my daughter so we can "zoom craft" together and make some of these! Thank you so much for some wonderful ideas! Happy Crafting and Merry Christmas🎄
Welcome! It makes me so happy to know you and your daughter will be crafting virtually together and having fun with paper bags! Thanks so much for watching!
Hi, I just subscribed. So glad I found you. I LOVE the waxed paper technique and can’t wait to try it! Thank you for sharing! Also loved the embossing/inking idea 😀
It was an eye-popping discovery for me - when I wasn't expecting it! I just wish those things happened every day - they don't, but I try to celebrate them when they do! Thanks for watching!
Ok. I came here by way of 3/22 video of flowers made with strips and stamped. I reference that purposefully. 😂😂😂 Anyway, great great ideas!! I crumpled copy paper and used various colors of ink (a Pam video sometime back). I have seen them recently and though they are quite pretty and colorful, I like the idea of two-times now that I’ve seen this video. I had some dry inks from non-use and tried spritzing then adding glycerine. Too much glycerine. Some inks totally changed colors. Seems it brought out base pigments or something. Anyway, I tried them on a tea dyed paper using stencils. The paper got really soft and felt damp for quite some time. I think glycerine is in lotions (esp hand which I’ve seen used for faux leather). So I guess that’s what I ended up with. I ordered new ink pads and some different colors as a result. I’m holding the messed up pads. Sigh. Anyway, this video was packed with ideas … big time. I end up with so many ideas but balk at creating things. I need a plan, a strategy! Or “just do it”! Lots of things here to try! TFS ❤❤❤❤
The waxed papers truck reminded me of how we use crayons or candles to mark on paper or eggs as a resist. I wonder what will happen if you paint over this paper bag after this treatment. Will have to check this out.
Thanks so much for viewing! I think I'll be using the wax paper technique a lot, too - it was such a surprise to me when I noticed what it could do! Happy holidays to you!
When I make. faux leather , after crumbling the paper, I dilute hair conditioner with warm water spray it on cover, one side let it dry, then on other side crumble again then when dry swipe the ink pad over it, this makes the paper to actually feel like soft leather .
i just discovered your channel! i’ve subscribed as I’m looking forward to whatever else you come up with for junk journaling. love crumpled wax paper technique on paper bags; AND that the handles can also be used- awesome!🤩
Nice techniques, Anne! I seem to have quite a few paper bags around here so these will come in handy. I thought the wax paper also had a leather-look to it. Wishing you many blessings over the holidays!
Great techniques, curious if you were to use dye sprays or other ink applications if the waxy markings might act as a resist? What fun, thank you for sharing! 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I've not tried the resist technique yet, but someone else mentioned it as well. The surface is perfectly smooth, and you can write easily across it, so I tend to think the resist factor wouldn't be there, but you never know with inks - I'll try it soon! Thanks for watching, I really appreciate your interest!
Wow, that's a great question. I haven't tried the wax-marked paper with dyes but I should do that soon! Perhaps another video is in the making! :-) Thanks for watching!
love these ideas but in my state you have to use reusable bags or pay for each grocery bag. You should also review faux leather paper using glycerine very similar to hair conditioner.
Yes, the grocery bags aren't quite as plentiful as they used to be (and environmentally, that's a good thing). The same technique can work on brown craft mailing paper. I've even done the wax paper technique on plain white drawing paper with a similar intriguing result. Thanks for watching.
TOSS IT?!? If you are going to toss that ink pad, toss it my way!! 😂 i add water (glycerin too if you are so inclined) and it brings it back to life. You just popped up in my feed and so far i am enjoying your video. I have subscribed. Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much, Valerie - I'm thrilled to have you aboard! I do spritz the pad with water frequently, but I think it's starting to wise up to my trickery and is holding out on me! I've had it for years, so I don't suppose it owes me anything. Thanks so much for watching!
Marvelous ideas! Regarding the ironed wax paper: can the wax paper, itself, be used in a journal, or is still too waxy? It has an almost rice paper look. Thank you!
Thank you! I found I can still easily write on the wax-marked paper with an ordinary pen, so it's great to use in a signature as a writing space. I mentioned in the video that it's not sticky, but I checked it again just now for write-ability - it's fine!
Thanks, Rachel! I Use a Janome sewing machine - it's not as fancy as many machines, but it's decent quality. I bought it for quilting almost 20 years ago and have rarely given it a rest that whole time. Most machines now have at least a few fancy stitches on them. It's really worth trying. My Janome doesn't seem to mind switching back and forth between paper and fabric - I do get it cleaned regularly!
@@annekenlon Thank you so much ! do you use a certain type of thread ? I have tried the brother and singer machines but my thread keeps getting tangled or just breaking ! I really want to sew my papers for my journals ! Ugh !
@@rachelgale54 I just use ordinary Coats & Clark thread, the same standard thread everyone uses for sewing. I have found that if the thread is VERY old, it'll break - which is why I don't buy vintage thread at estate sales. You may want to check to make absolutely certain your machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is firmly seated. Also, check the tension on the machine to make sure it's not too tight. I'm no expert, but I'm sure you will figure it out! Have fun!
Omg i used to work as a secretary in pathology at children's hospital in Boston and I said to myself that looks like a slide of cells and then you said that😂
I can say that that is very very interesting video! I try to find alternatives when it comes to Tim Holtz. In Canada, the prices of TH are ridiculous. But, in a way, it gives us more creativity 😂I am learning a lot with you! Thank you for sharing!!! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!
Wow!!! Just saw the effect of the crumpled waxed paper. Definitely saving this to try these wonderful ideas. Many thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!

TFS ❤❤❤❤
I know, my head is often spinning with too many ideas as well! It's a nice problem to have!
😂 Enjoyed the Video!❤
So glad! happy crafting - I appreciate your taking time to comment!
Great ideas!
Glad you like them! Thank you!
Thanks for the fab ideas!!!!!
You are so welcome! Glad you liked them!
The waxed papers truck reminded me of how we use crayons or candles to mark on paper or eggs as a resist. I wonder what will happen if you paint over this paper bag after this treatment. Will have to check this out.
I'm going to try that out, too!
Thanks for these ideas. Love the wax paper one and sure will use it! Glad I found your channel and subscribed. Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much for viewing! I think I'll be using the wax paper technique a lot, too - it was such a surprise to me when I noticed what it could do! Happy holidays to you!
So cool!
Thanks, Renee, I do think these are really fun!
Love these ideas.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
When I make. faux leather , after crumbling the paper, I dilute hair conditioner with warm water spray it on cover, one side let it dry, then on other side crumble again then when dry swipe the ink pad over it, this makes the paper to actually feel like soft leather .
Great idea to dilute the conditioner! Thank you!
Hi. New subbie here! Nice ways to use bags. Love it thank you ❤
Thank you so much! I'm really happy to have you aboard! Happy New Year!
What an incredible video!!! I have learned so much!!! So happy to have found you!!! I am a new subbie… YAY TYSMFS!!! Blessings ❤
Oh, my, thanks for your enthusiastic and lovely words! You're making me blush! So glad you're here.
i just discovered your channel! i’ve subscribed as I’m looking forward to whatever else you come up with for junk journaling. love crumpled wax paper technique on paper bags; AND that the handles can also be used- awesome!🤩
Thanks so much for watching! I did enjoy doing this one - the wax paper thing was a really fun discovery! I appreciate your comments!
Nice techniques, Anne! I seem to have quite a few paper bags around here so these will come in handy. I thought the wax paper also had a leather-look to it. Wishing you many blessings over the holidays!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your support!
Thank you for some cool new ideas! I subscribed.❤
Thanks, Judi! So happy to have you aboard! And yes, get out that wax paper and have fun!
Absolutely Brilliant!!!! Love this!!!!
Thank you, Darlene! It's always fun to see your name pop up here! I appreciate you!
New subscriber- luv the wax paper technique. Like how explain journaling ideas - thx u
Thank you so much for watching! I have fun doing these projects - welcome aboard!
Hi there, great techniques. Will the wax create a resist for dyes, maybe try different mediums like sprays, watercolours dribbling down? 😊
Wow, that's a great question. I haven't tried the wax-marked paper with dyes but I should do that soon! Perhaps another video is in the making! :-) Thanks for watching!
Thank you! The effect is beautiful!
Thank you so much! That wax paper thing was a fun surprise and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
love these ideas but in my state you have to use reusable bags or pay for each grocery bag.
Thanks for watching.
have you tried doing the wax paper in an embossing folder then pressing it on the paper? It's really fun!

Terrific ideas, Anne! Tfs💜
You are so welcome!
You are such a good teacher. This was very fun. Unfortunately i dont have an iron. Havent ironed in years.😊❤
Get one cheap at a thrift store! ❤
Thanks, Suzy! You might have to snag one to do this!
New to your channel. Will check out your playlist.
Thanks, so glad you're here! Happy crafting!
I am amazed and can't wait to try this technique. Merry Christmas, Anne.
It'll go great for you, I just know it! Have fun, and Merry Christmas to you as well!
Hi Anne, I love your script embossing folder, is that a Tim Holtz one? TIA
Jennifer, it's not a Tim Holtz folder - it came in a box of Cuttlebug-branded folders I got from a neighbor years ago!
😂 those pesky ink pads.
I am about to leave for a long road trip and can use some of these ideas and craft while hubby drives. 😂 thank you❤
Marvelous ideas!
Oh Wow ! these are fantastic techniques ! Please tell me what sewing machine do you use for those stitches !!??
Have fun!
thank you so much !@@annekenlon
Anne, wouldn't this be cool with lighter weight brown paper...like Amazon brown packing paper???
I've often done it with that Amazon packing paper - I love that stuff! Thank you for watching!
Just spritz water on your ink pad or if you have any re-inker that would be perfect!
You are a good sqisher Anne😅
hahahaha, thank you, Sharon!
Why toss old distress ink pads? There are re-inkers available.
Those are some great ideas for embellishing plain brown paper. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips!
Omg i used to work as a secretary in pathology at children's hospital in Boston and I said to myself that looks like a slide of cells and then you said that😂
It TOTALLY does, right? There's such a strange, interesting energy to that pattern - I just love it! Glad you noticed it, too!
Don't toss that ink pad, re-ink it!
Hee, hee, I will!
Thank you so. much! So happy to have you aboard!
