    When the Noel Gallagher and Marty Schwarz and BB King and Emily Wolfe semi-hollowbodies are all under a grand, I think Dave Grohl is doing pretty well out of this.
    All bar the Marty Schwarz come with CTS pots. Adding Gibson Burstbuckers, keeping in mind that Epi will get them at wholesale or less, doesn't make up a £$€300 difference.
    It's exceedingly cool but like you I'm going to wait for a discount or a used example.

      Are Gibson pickups really that much better than Seymour Duncan, Dimazio, or Bare Knuckle? There are so many options to upgrade a cheap guitar with and make something unique.

    Totally hear you on the compressors. My sound changed (I think for the better) when I started using the Keeley Compressor plus. It's not that you want a compressed squishy sound so go and buy a compressor.... it's that it plays very nicely with the rest of your board and keeps everything just inline a little better.

    While not surprising given the circumstances (the highly competetive budget market with more and more brands popping up giving you all the essential classic shapes), I still find these recent Epis insane. If that is how the rumored strategy looks of Gibson "evakuating" the sub 2000 price bracket, then goodnight: it's basically chinese-made dentists guitars for those dentists that aren't yet 50 and haven't yet payed off their home and or student loans, as well as collectors and resellers.
    I remember 5 or 6 years ago the "pricier" Epis like the Old Glory or the Matt Heafy had a stellar reputation, great specks and they snuck into the "quality far eastern made mid price" bracket really well. So did the Epi LP 1959. I thought Epi would aim at the 1000 point and already was of the opinion that Epi would have to massively step up their game to continously and reliably establish themselves at that price point. They blew right past that with all their latest new releases.
    These here? They literally cost as much as the cheaper offerings from Gibsons (those with the thin satin nitro finishes ie) did just 5 years ago.

      You can buy an Epi SG for $199 or $299 or $499 or $699 or $999 the sky isn't falling because they have some premium models. Ten years ago the cry was 'why doesn't Epi make more Gibson level products' then when they do people are mad? Nah. Not buying it

      So Gibson should NOT offer sub $2000 guitars? Come on now. And all this angst over an Epi premium that cost as much as a basic Gibson makes no sense to me. Epi has $200 options. Gibson wants $5000+ for their models that Epi wants $1200-1600 for so to me if you mad at anything its why Gibson should be charging that much for their 'coo' guitars not why Epi should charge 30% of what the same Gibson costs

    • @PaulCooksStuff
      @PaulCooksStuff 2 місяці тому +1

      It's not about what %age of a Gibson price epiphone can realistically charge, they have completely different labour rates. The outrage is more about what %age of an epiphone price can epiphone charge. An epi 355 is under $500. But an epi 355 in Pelham blue, with different sound holes and headstock that's no more labour hours to produce is 2.5x that. The markup is very hard to justify. Dave's cut, plus pickups and hardcase aren't $750.

    • @I.am_Groot
      @I.am_Groot 2 місяці тому

      @@PaulCooksStuff You just don't like the price point. I get it. Yes the % matters because if Epi makes something similar at $750 to the $5000 Gibson some people will just buy the Epi which means Gibson sells less overpriced 'high end' models. Go buy an Epi 355 for $500 if that is what you want to spend

    You can still get a regular Epiphone ES-335 for around £500. I got my Epi ES-339 a couple of years ago second hand but in mint condition for about £300.
    There's no reason to be upset that some Epiphones are too expensive, when you can still get other Epiphones at the price you want to pay.
    If you're then going to complain the specs aren't what you want, then you might begin to understand why the more expensive guitar is more expensive.

  • @tostrmofo6686
    @tostrmofo6686 2 місяці тому

    The Gretsch Electromatics for me are the most comfortable Semi-Hollow at an relatively affordable price point. I'm with you regarding the gold hardware.
    The DG-335 for what I think is is to expensive, Burstbuckers out, Probuckers in and you can lower the price to something around 900. The Guitar is gorgeous, I used to own a Gibson one and sold it for 5 figures. I hated the neck, for what I know about you Andy, you really will like the neck.
    Didn't the in between sounds of the Strat starting to put the switch in between and it was kind of a gamble to get 2 pickups active at the same time? Will probably work (kind of) with the 54 reissue.

  • @MattSwain1
    @MattSwain1 Місяць тому +1

    Ultimately the people to blame for Epiphone’s price rises are those who are paying prices such as 1299 for the DG model. It’s a nice guitar, I’m not really interested in signature models but if it had been 999 then maybe I’d have bought one. At 1299, I can afford one but won’t on principle and others should do likewise. If you’re a person who grumbles about prices and then buys anyway, you are part of the problem. There’s plenty of choice of good 335-style guitars for half this money (and less)

  • @Civilian2.0

    I think the Gretsch guitars offer fantastic value for money, I have a G2622T Streamliner, and it's a very, very, good guitar - In fact, I'm now gassing for the Chris Rocha model featured on last weeks show. Still more affordable than recent Epiphone releases.

    unpopular strategy - hundreds of people will jump on to buy it then realised, it won't scratch the itch as it's another epiphone 335 but with diamond shape holes and pointy headstock. It will not gain value as a second hand because supply will be massive. My bet is that it will hit marketplace sooner than expected an i will gladly buy one for 750

  • @bassmandudge
    @bassmandudge 2 місяці тому

    Hi Andy, I've put a couple of, I guess, fairly negative comments on gibson/epiphone and gear pricing recently. I think my take is similar to yours...I am concerned about what i would call the normalisation of guitars and pedals pricing. My first rant about this was the chase bliss preamp, a triumph of marketing over substance. All those players who fell for the ....oooooo look auto sliders...like they havent been around for absolutely years on mixing desks .. but the huge issue was the price. So now £300 pedals ( that used to be £150 pedals) are now hailed as value as they are cheap compared to the £900 CB preamp..... If you deliberately drive the average price of gear up and throw in a couple of doozies. ( Epi firebird in conjunction with gibsons custom shop anyone) Then the DG seems good value in comparison. But its not a fair comparison as the Epi firebird is wildly overpriced imo. Same with Gibson les Pauls...Murphy labs for £10k makes a standard for £3k seem like good value... But its not. I'm 57 now...on my 50th i went looking for my first les Paul standard...my budget was £2k max..thats how much they were in the UK ....even then i never found one that i liked... So i didnt buy one... Now to throw a spanner in my own arguement, well almost, i think £1200 for the 335 DG is ok... I' m a cabinet maker and do luthering as well and the process of laminating woods and creating hollow and semi hollow body guitars is complex compared to a solid body...so there is extra work ..and i guess your getting decent pick ups etc. Normalising high prices for stuff makes increasing the price of lower end way easier and accepted by the masses... But i guess people will buy these in their droves and Epiphone will feel justified their pricing structure... Just imagine if we all got together and just said...um no..😂
    And in conclusion...... How many £900 chase bliss preamps do you see on youtubers pedalboards now....zero....and yet it was revered as the most incredibly flexible, best sounding, groundbreaking pedal of a generation....and it was as it allowed every other pedal company to double their prices and get away with it as we all see those now as value for money...

    Question: You feel the Grohl Epi is somewhat over priced at $1299, which is fair, but do you feel the same about the Gretsch Chris Rocha Sig you reviewed last week, which is also priced at $1299, and again, compared to the Gretsch's you mentioned this week at around $800, I believe there are some upgraded components on the Rocha, but does that constitute a $400 bump in the price?? Thanks!!

    Not long ago there was a Bonamassa interview/promo video for one of his signatures and Joe said the guitars now cost $2-300 more to make. I can't imagine pricing is in JB's wheelhouse but it is a bit of left handed behind the back messaging on Epi/Gibson's part. And seems somewhat feasible.

  • @anthonynonya
    @anthonynonya 2 місяці тому

    I'm no expert, but I think epi signature models don't really go down in price much on the used market. Your only option is early, while they're still easily available new. At that point, most for sale won't be old and beat up, so prices will still be close to new. Then, when they stop making that model, you'll never see them for the new price again.
    I hope I'm wrong because I want a discounted used one too.

    I think the word you want is "bamboozled". That word always gets me. lol
    The DG Epiphone's price doesn't seem that bad with what they have into it, which seems like a lot of quality. The problem, as I see it, is Gibson has is they don't have Fender's stratification from the Squire Sonic to the Classic Vibe, then the MIM axes, and finally the US-made guitars. It's Epiphone, which might be a cheap POS model in a starter kit with "Special" on the end of it, to the Lifeson model which is pretty impressive and Alex wanted to keep them all affordable as compared to having "Gibson" on it, or it's "Gibson" and you spend big bucks and spotty QC depending what you get. There's not a lot of in-between.
    Try saying the patrons list like the Great Gildersleeves.

    Same as the Explorer Korina. Which I have financed... I will say this. The quality is close enough to Gibson and less high maintenance

    The problem I have with Epi is their insane price increases. The only "majic" they have done too warrant the increase in $$$ is give people a Gibson like headstock. Everything else is Standard Epi China/Chibson factory processing. Not that thats a bad thing but they spend probably $100 making each unit overseas. So much for the "affordable" Official Alternative. That all being said I still Love my Sub $500 MIK Epi LP Custom. Its a tank.

    Hi, Andy. I'm in the same boat as you concerning the Epi prices -- I like these new models cosmetically but cannot bring myself to pay the price, for multiple reasons. While I might like the guitar(s), I know I would always feel a bit of regret because the specs just don't justify it. And the used market is going to be difficult, too, because how do you really tell the knockoffs from China from the "real" ones from China, and at this point, what's the actual difference other than the massive price difference?

    • @I.am_Groot

      Good point about knockoffs but specs and price point put Epi in line with other guitar makers. Ibanez AZ series basswood body Gotoh standard trem in house pickups. $1299
      Yamaha Pacifica also Gotoh standard trem gig bad $1349
      EVH Wolfgang Special MIM does have Floyd w D/Tuna no bag/case $1299
      Epiphone '63 Firebird Gibson USA Firebird Mini Humbucker w/hard case $1299
      You could make a case for any of these being better deals at $999-1099 but none of them to me stand out as something I would spend that much on given other options available

    The Epiphone Dave Grohl being $1300 definitely isn't cheap, but comparing the upgrades to the similar Emily Wolf Sheraton, like a 4th pot, Gibson pickups, and a different neck and headstock, I feel like that price makes sense. It's definitely not for the person who wants the best guitar at that price range, but it is an affordable alternative to the real deal when the real deal costs $7k or $20k lol.

    Harley Benton, Musi etc are making guitars with roasted maple, stainless steel frets etc for like $300. It’s very doable. Some Epiphones are priced rn like Gibsons should be priced, they’re ripping people off. Epiphone will lose their market if they keep doing this.

  • @disenchanteddad7759

    The Epiphone DG-335 might be a little too pricey for some folks' personal opinions, but we're talking about less than a fifth the price of the not-very-attractive (i.e. kinda' ugly) gold Gibson Custom Shop version, a tenth the price of the black version, or a twentieth of the price of the most-desirable Pelham Blue #1. Is it "too expensive for a Chinese-made guitar"? Considering you get a killer hardshell case ($150-200), nice inlays, real Gibson Burstbuckers ($380-ish) and upgraded pots, it's really not out of line at all, and that's strictly from a "sum of parts" perspective. Also considering that the fit and finish has been pretty consistent (something Big G struggles with, even), it's a great guitar for the money. Not a "bargain" (although more so than the Bonamassa '63 SG, which is awesome but should've come with USA pickups for the price), but not a ripoff either. Mine has a neck that feels like my '64 Gibson Custom Shop SG reissue, and was flawless out of the box. Lowered the pickups and bridge a little, and perfection. First guitar I've bought in a long, long time I've had no complaints about and didn't have at least some kind of buyer's remorse for. And for folks who want a "deal", there are always the Ali- and DHG-knockoffs, which are "close enough for rock-n-roll" for most, and then one can upgrade pickups if one wants and they can do it on a budget that they may feel more comfortable with. But as-is, the Epi DG is a helluva' guitar and definitely quite fun to play and record with. I love the look of the Firebirds, but I do agree those seem to be a little more "outrageous" regarding price. There's an upcoming SG/Les Paul Custom (Maestro, 3-pickup, white) coming, with the Gibson headstock, and I am quite anxious at how much it might cost.

    The Dave Grohl is $1899 here in Canada. I was considering getting one, but I have decided to pick up a Gibson Les Paul Classic instead for $800 more.
    As for the Fender Strat's price... find me ONE flagship Gibson that comes close to that price. In fact, find me any decent Gibson that comes close to that price. People pay 5 figures for Gibson guitars that have been 'Murphy Lab' aged, in other words had someone kick the crap out of them, so I think $2500 for an anniversary Strat, American made Strat, is not only a great price, but it's an incredible bargain.

    • @danielc196
      @danielc196 2 місяці тому

    • @barcham
      @barcham 2 місяці тому

      @@danielc196 But I guess you would think it is just fine paying upwards of $10k for a Gibson custom shop guitar? This particular guitar is a reproduction of the 1954 Strat, so it is to be expected that the controls would reflect that. If you want something else, then buy something else. Give it a few months and you will probably be able to find a new Epiphone that costs more than this Strat does.

I’m disappointed as I wanted the DG but I wont pay that… it says Epiphone on the headstock so it isn’t the Gibson that DG plays ( i know, price etc and i get it).. but its still €1400 for what people do see as a budget guitar (even if they are wrong).
