The members of Led Zeppelin were all state of the art players and could do a lot of things that other bands couldn't. In Black Dog they are purposely combining different time signatures between drums and guitar; it creates tension, then explodes when they meet in the chorus. Structually (and lyrically) this is classic blues, which was foundation of many of Zep's best tracks (before they took it to the next level). As others noted, it's not a simple composition; you need to listen to it a few times, but eventually you'll realize it as one of the classic rock songs of all time. Jimmy Page's solo at the end is fire.
It was named after a black dog that was hanging around the entrance to the studio. You can't really get the groove, because I believe the guitar riff is in 5/4 time, but the drums are in 4/4, that means the beats sync every twenty notes
There is also a time change in the middle of the riff. It is easy to play wrong. A little difficult the correct way. With a drummer that gets it right the song works. An average drummer, forget it. And then of course good luck finding a singer.
@@bc2198 Incorrect. That’s a black cat. The title of this song has nothing to do with the lyric, they chose it as a joke because a black dog was hanging around the studio. And he’s right about the timing, they deliberately chose a rhythm you can’t dance to.
You should listen to the studio version of Dazed and Confused. First played by Jimmy Page when he was in the Yardbirds but it became a favourite with Led Zeppelin
You can basically just start from their first album and go from there. So many great songs. A few of my favorites - kashmir - dazed & confused. - over the hills and far away - trampled underfoot - communication breakdown
As their channel is very diverse in content, there would always be a long period of time between LZ video posts. Wouldn't it be better for their channel if they only reacted to the most suggested songs by viewers? What do you think?
Black Dog is just one of the many types of songs LZ does. It's fun to watch them perform it in concert, but it's not a sit down and listen song especially when your not that familiar with their music. They are known for their unique song construction, unexpected tempo changes, amazing guitar riffs, powerful drum rolls, and Robert Plant's vocals. Led Zeppelin are also great live performers, and since you have only reacted to their recordings, it would be nice to watch your reactions to an actual live song. As they never play their songs the same way when they play live, it is important to find the right performance. I think you would really enjoy their song Kashmir live at Knebworth 1979 official video. This has all the elements I mentioned and everything you said was missing. It is an epic performance where you can see and hear how good this band is. A second choice in my opinion would be Since I've Been Loving You live at MSG 1973 official video or Stairway to Heaven from the same concert. Lastly I would like to mention that Jimmy Page the guitarist was a highly sought after studio musician prior to starting Led Zeppelin, and he played guitar and harmonica on some of Tom Jones early songs.
Zeppelin made music to make you think and cause discomfort....through lyrics and composition. I love your reaction, truly your first listen I can tell. It will grow on you though...as does all of their music 🎶🤌🏼
Listen to 20 more Zeppelin songs then come back to this...From personal experience, I guarantee it will grow on you. They played outside the box more than any rock band in the 70's. Definitely go to When The Levee Breaks next....it hits hard!! Also, Going To California is pure ear candy.
As a drummer the first time I heard this on each stop before Robert starts to sing again you can hear John Bonham click his sticks together every single time. A very interesting and powerful way to state the STOP ✋ 🛑
Hey guys, thanks for doing my pick!!!… so you didn’t quite get Black Dog the first time around but I promise you play it a couple more times, and it likely will end up on your playlist!… Zeppelin has such a wide variety of styles and yeah you probably should do Since I’ve been loving you from Madison Square Garden 1973 next. I was at that show July 29, 1973 so two days from now is the 50th anniversary!… the other pick I would actually have for you next is the studio version of Going to California so you can hear their beautiful all acoustic side as well. Rock on!
Thank you Ed - it was our pleasure! Very much appreciate you supporting us! We've got Stairway to heaven from MSG coming next but we'll add Going to California to the list because we haven't even heard that mentioned yet!
In folklore some black dogs are considered to be evil in nature (which I think is bs). Like the black lab that lived next door to David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam) and he said the dog supposedly talked to him and told him to kill people. If you look inside of Led Zeppelin's 4th album with the song "Black Dog" on it and you open up the album and reflect the picture of the one half of the mountain of rocks up to a mirror and make it reflect to make a picture of a whole mountain you'll see what looks like a demon dogs face on the rocks. You can actually see this on the internet for yourself. Zeppelin is notorious for using subliminal messaging and subliminal pictures on their albums like in the song stairway to heaven he sings: "She's buying a stairway to heaven" That is a subliminal message that you can buy your way to heaven but you cannot you have to repent.

First time I saw Song remains the same I was left wanting and not used to non studio versions,. in time I came to appreciate it for the greatness in it (but its far from perfect) and how it captures the time and how big they were then. But I think more people are familiar with studio versions and I think thats the best way to begin appreciating LZ (or almost any band).
Black Dog is filled with oddball time signatures and was notoriously difficult to play, and so of course it's hard to move to in a traditional way. But they actually sell it really well, especially because they keep coming back to that straight-8 which suddenly feels so comforting and John Bonham is really making the bell on that ride cymbal ring to signal how solid and relatable that straight section is and that's your chance to traditionally rock out for a little bit. But if you relax and take in the overall feel of it, this song is actually a great rock dance song all the way through. People my age have all danced to it, but I have seen some really sexy dancing to this thing, oh my. And I noticed that Ms B&B really lit up in those straight 8 sections. I agree with her also that I really love his voice in this, and the provocative lyrics of course. And also, great point about how different it is on a first listen.
Kudos for spotting the difference between the guitar and drum time signiatures. When this came out it took me a while to figure it out. Rick Beato explains it best.
Zeppelin sometimes had 2 different time signatures in the same song. Sometimes the whole band was in 1 signature and switched up during the song, sometimes the rhythm section was in one time signature while the guitar and vocals were in another.
The radio was the biggest influence on everyone knowing music that wasn’t necessarily our type because we were all listening to the same stations. Zeppelin, Beach Boys and others were before my time in the early 80’s, but they were played frequently, so we knew them. The internet killed the shared musical experience with everyone silo’d into their own niche.
I just looked at your Zep reactions - great job keeping up with the playlists, btw - and I noticed you haven't seen them live yet. 👀 May I suggest "Since I've been Loving You" live at Madison Square Garden 1973? Buckle up and settle in for some kickass blues with a punch. BTW, I personally don't consider Zep a rock band. To me they're more like a blues band that rocks. Especially their first 2 albums. Anyway. Zep live. You won't forget or regret. ✌🏼❤
I adore Led Zeppelin! They are sooo good! Thanks. When are you going to react to the unplugged version of black by Pearl Jam? I know you reacted to the studio version, but sorry it doesn't come close to the live. One of the best performances ever!!
Jimmy Page said in an interview that he liked Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" & how the vocals stood on their own before the instruments kick in & that was the inspiration behind the style of this song.
“Since I’ve Been Loving You” from their 3rd album is the way to go, studio version first. It’s time to slow it down a little bit and experience this amazing beautiful music.
Fool in the Rain, Rock n Roll and D'yer Mak'er are three of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Don't think you will be disappointed with any of those three. Studio versions.
this defined "head banging" rock and roll when I was about 16 or so; we LOVED it in the early 1970s!! remember, most all early British rockers were HEAVILY influenced by Black American Blues singers which is where the line "I don't know but I been told, big leg woman ain't got no soul" came from. Yes, it was a concert song; it was not for "ballad" listening. Robert Plant is one of the top 5 "screamers" of all time!!

Really a great reaction. It was great to hear someone break down the idea of sometimes needing to listen to something several times before you are super into something. Some things never completely jibe, but often being familiar makes something even better.
You’ll have to pick another winner. I don’t do much more than enjoy the videos and leave an occasional comment. Love your work! I get a kick out of watching folks listen to the older tunes for the first time.
John Paul Jones wrote this song. No instrument is playing the same song. The members said that this was the hardest song to play live. And yes it is called Black Dog after a Labrador Retriever that hung around during the making of this masterpiece of an album
Nice reaction guys. That time signature can take a few listens to get the hang of, so you're not alone there. From the same album you will really enjoy "When The Levee Breaks" and for a bit of a slower, bluesier feel, check out "Since I've Been Loving You". Both studio versions I would start with before heading towards the live versions. "How Many More Times" from their debut album is another to check out. For something a bit later on in their catalogue, try "In My Time Of Dying" and "Kashmir" from 1975.
When I was 8 or 9 in the late 70's this was the first hard rock song I heard. It was at a arcade I would go to and they played this alot on the juke box. I remember this with early arcade video games like asteroids, missile command, thief and football.
Everyone was going crazy when LZ performed this to a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, 1973. I should know because I was there - I sort of remember the tickets being $10 - it was 3+ hour concert...just imagine that! Do yourselves a HUGE favor and listen to them LIVE - the MSG, 1973 concert is a great way to start...the way they adapt their songs to the stage is AMAZING!! Have fun!
I was four when this song came out,and one of my older sisters was a huge Zeppelin fan. I remember running and dancing round the living room to this when it came out in 71,and my sister played it over and over. It still sounds as good as then!
That's zep very diverse. There catalog is huge. Not everyone will like every song like I do. But that's ok. Imo you should keep listening they will surprise you. Zep forever 😊
Very good, you caught the fact that the drums and guitar are playing in two different time signatures. Which is insanely difficult to make sound right. They do it on other songs as well
Grew up with this. Good take on the groove being erratic. This is Rock Ouy Music. We were partying to this up on a mountain at night in our 4WD Trucks where no one else can hear and crank that shit.
Yea Guys , You also Have to Hear “Since I’ve Been Loving You and When The Levee Breaks And Watch Them Live at MSG 1973 !!!! They Will Blow Your Minds On How Great This Band Was !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They liked playing around with different time stamps so they only met up on certain beats. I don't know anything about musical structure, but I've heard it adds a challenge.
Anything from Madison Square Gardens 1973...Since I've been Loving you is always been one of their top tier performances, but everything they do is good to great!
Great freaking reaction, guys! Just came across your chan for the first time and am exploring--as are you! Zeppelin is my favorite group, and as you know there are many of us Zepheds who like to see and hear what "new ears" think of our band! Good or bad, opinion tho yeah, it's usually GOOD, lol. Two songs after this one on the album is one of those "other sides" to Zeppelin, "Battle of Evermore." Acoustic but energetic, lovely, a guest female vocalist, otherworldly, Lord of the Rings lyrics--awesome!
The reason you can’t catch the groove is because the drummer is playing in 4/4, but the guitar and bass are playing in 3/4, so that gives it a weird “hitch” at some points of the song. It was largely improvised in the studio, off the main guitar riff
For something very different from them you should take a peek at Rain Song. You will be more than pleasantly surprised. It shows a different side to them and is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites.
Omg, I had the same comment. And the time signature is off between the guitar and percussion intentionally! The idea is to grab you to engage your mind and think about what you’re hearing! One of the very best Zep songs.
Two of the influences for this song are Muddy Waters' 1968 album Electric Mud and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac song OH Well. I suggest listening to OH Well it has the same call and response with the vocals and the music.
With the grove changes in Rock n' Roll you need to listen to these songs a few times to get and understand the flow , but once you do, OMG, you'll be dancing!!!👍👍👌👌✌✌😃😃
Black Dog packs a wallop like a Sledgehammer. Its the first track on their iconic Untitled album (IV), and with Rock and Roll the 2nd track, it was a one two punch in the gut of heavy power rock when I bought this album in the mid 70s, and it is still.
At the beginning of my first high school music class, the teacher put on this song. The speakers were massive and the beginning with the weird strumming cut through the air. Everybody likes the teacher from that moment on and listened to whatever he wanted us to hear.
Next Led Zeppelin song you must do is "Kashmir" live from Celebration Day Concert. There first concert together after almost 30 years and also their last concert. Iconic performance. Millions tried to get tickets for the concert.
You are right, it is a great concert song! I saw LZ in 1974, this song brought the house down (but then, all their songs did)! I recommend seeing this on video to get a better feel for it.
So sad! My mom had music playing all the time, so I know music from before I was born. I did the same for my kids, and they are very well versed in all kinds of music! I've listened to their music as well. We still go off on it all!
I lived through the rock earlier years. I'm black went to an all white school only 14 blacks but I had a lot of white friends and we groove to led zeppelin. Jimmy page was one of the best guitar player ever. Music in the 70s was the best. Been to a lot of concerts black dog was one of there best check out grand funk railroad inside out. I believe you'll like it enjoy. The best time in my life
I grew up on these guys and many other bands because I borrowed my brothers and sisters album collection and listen to them... Always making sure to put them right back where they were. LOL! If you guys do movie reviews I would suggest watching in The Song Remains the Same. I believe that's what somebody was referring to as Madison Square Garden. Incredible movie. Sticking with music... Custard pie, Celebration Day, Kashmir, Rock and Roll, Nobody's Fault But Mine.. I can go on but let's see where we go. Thanks and keep up the great work. Glad you're enjoying.👍🍻🇨🇦
Jimmy Page was the sorcerer. Plant was the apprentice. Bonzo was the backbone. Jonsey fleshed it out. Young kids do not know how this blistered the musical industry. Dig... and dig deeper. Peace on earth.
With its sequence of time signatures and pauses for vocal soloing, it’s definitely not meant to be danced to…without a continuous groove, the only thing it is for is enjoyment! ☺️
The guitars and drums are playing in different time signatures. A black dog in some English folklore is a bad omen. And a black dog was hanging around the studio. But it is a great tune.
You guys absolutely need to listen to When The Levee Breaks!
If I could hit the thumbs up on this 100 times I would.

Looking forward to more from LZ. What gets me about the band is all their songs sound unique. That’s really difficult to pull off but they deliver.
You’ll have to pick another winner. I don’t do much more than enjoy the videos and leave an occasional comment. Love your work! I get a kick out of watching folks listen to the older tunes for the first time.
John Paul Jones came up with the complex main riff with the goal of making it so that no one could dance to it.
Dazed and Confused is my favorite Zeppelin song.
Rock Out , type o
It's a party song for high energy . Nothing like being hammered , blasting down the highway with this tune melting the speakers .
Yea Guys , You also Have to Hear “Since I’ve Been Loving You and When The Levee Breaks And Watch Them Live at MSG 1973 !!!! They Will Blow Your Minds On How Great This Band Was !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dynamic between all four was incredible, especially Bonham and Page.
They liked playing around with different time stamps so they only met up on certain beats. I don't know anything about musical structure, but I've heard it adds a challenge.
Anything from Madison Square Gardens 1973...Since I've been Loving you is always been one of their top tier performances, but everything they do is good to great!
Best and most versatile band ever. Led Zeppelin. They covered all genres.
Best Band ever
The Lemon Song, Good Times Bad Times, Going to California, Kashmir, Nobody's Fault But Mine. There are so many choices.
The live version of "Since I've Been Lovin You" is one of the best live performances ever recorded. Check it out! (Madison Square Garden 1973).
For something very different from them you should take a peek at Rain Song. You will be more than pleasantly surprised. It shows a different side to them and is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites.
"In My time of Dying" totally bluesy
You don't dance to zep, you listen and appreciate it
Omg, I had the same comment. And the time signature is off between the guitar and percussion intentionally! The idea is to grab you to engage your mind and think about what you’re hearing! One of the very best Zep songs.
You can def dance to Zeppelin. Not this song but many, many songs...with the right partner....oh my. You def can dance!
The crowds definitely danced to this. Perhaps not as individuals, but as one collective organism, lol.
I dance to zeppelin 😊
No. We listened and appreciated WHILE we danced. Some of those songs are impossible to just sit through, you have to DANCE.
Rock and Roll the greatest, longest, most iconic Genre in musical history and not just in my opinion but also stated facts
Two of the influences for this song are Muddy Waters' 1968 album Electric Mud and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac song OH Well. I suggest listening to OH Well it has the same call and response with the vocals and the music.
Led Zeppelin - All of My Love !
Great reaction and comments! Gallows Pole is a good Zeppelin song.
With the grove changes in Rock n' Roll you need to listen to these songs a few times to get and understand the flow , but once you do, OMG, you'll be dancing!!!👍👍👌👌✌✌😃😃
My favorite Led Zeppelin song is the last one I listened to.😊😊😊
Great song!!! Top three Led Zep song for me.
I was born in 1972 and we listened to everything, music was so much better then.
Led Zeppelin rocks our teenage time back in the 70ths ❤
Iconic Rock song!!!!
It's style is inspired by Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well, and both are heavily rooted in the blues.
Black Dog packs a wallop like a Sledgehammer. Its the first track on their iconic Untitled album (IV), and with Rock and Roll the 2nd track, it was a one two punch in the gut of heavy power rock when I bought this album in the mid 70s, and it is still.
Classical and Rock N Roll the longest and best genre in musical history
At the beginning of my first high school music class, the teacher put on this song. The speakers were massive and the beginning with the weird strumming cut through the air. Everybody likes the teacher from that moment on and listened to whatever he wanted us to hear.
Robert Plant is now collaborating with the Queen of Bluegrass, Alison Krauss.
Highly Recommend their version of: Black Dog.
Next Led Zeppelin song you must do is "Kashmir" live from Celebration Day Concert. There first concert together after almost 30 years and also their last concert. Iconic performance. Millions tried to get tickets for the concert.
This is the very 1st song that I've heard by Led Zeppelin. It was 1989 and I was 14. My buddy played this song everyday after football practice.
Instantly grabbed. Killer track. Keep going.
We listen to SiriusXM when we’re on the road and we like the station that has the classic rock 1000 best countdown. This is number one.
Main stay while driving in my teen years and now at 63. Zep never gets old.
The best time in my life
Indoor venues had explosive light show to go with music
Led Zeppelin Kashmir ❤
3:00 AM hauling ass down Black Snake Road. Oh yeah.
Sorry, that was for the earlier comment about driving with Black Dog blasting.
Zep holds the undisputed #1 rock song with Stairway to heaven. This is not the typical rock band, these are the gods of rock.
Young kids do not know how this
blistered the musical industry.
Dig... and dig deeper.
Peace on earth.
"Out on the Tiles" is a favorite of mine
Zeppelin has a very versatile list of songs
Heart played this when starting out, you can find videos of it, Crazy good.
I can see your point about the start/stop of this track, but honestly after hearing it a few times, it sounds more "natural" IMHO.
