I'm Brazilian, and we speak Brazilian Portuguese here. They came to shoot in Rio de Janeiro, which caused a lot of excitement, as everyone was talking about a Marvel movie being filmed in our country. They were very cautious, especially with the language aspect, which is usually dubbed into English or features actors speaking English. However, they took care and invited some Brazilian actors to appear in the film.

Well, despite the effort being appreciated, I'd say "very cautious" is giving them too much credit. They tried to have the actors that were supposed to be locals in the story speak PT-BR, but most don't sound like native speakers at all and have weirdly constructed lines that clearly are just direct translations of English lines, apart, of course, from the ones that are actual Brazilians, like the pretty factory girl (portrayed by Débora Nascimento) and the martial arts trainer (which isn't an actual actor, but was portrayed by the real martial artist Rickson Gracie).
It would've been better (and probably not even expensive, at least at the time) to just hire an entire Brazilian cast for that part of the movie (they'd need, what, about 4 more of them to cover the ones that actually have lines?), but it is what it is -- it's already a surprise that they bothered to have some at all back in 2008, when I think most studios really didn't care in the slightest about this type of stuff, but again, "very cautious" is giving too much credit imo.

0:53 Ed Norton is my fave Bruce Banner/Hulk, his acting chops speak for themselves, was sad when he wasn’t cast for further MCU films, from memory was cause he clashed with the director and Kevin Feige over the writing/direction of the Hulk in the movie so he left MCU due to creative differences & they got Ruffalo instead.
4:10 It’s Portuguese but Brazilian dialect/accent rather than Original European one.
5:50 “Don’t make me angry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry” line was from The Incredible Hulk tv series from late 70s, the actor who played Dr David Banner, Bill Bixby says that line right before he turns into The Hulk played by Bodybuilder, Lou Ferrigno. Also the theme for the show is iconic too 👍🏽👍🏽. EDIT: Tv show changed Bruce Banners name to David for some reason, if I remember, I’ll edit comment.
21:52 Yeah, he does lol. Tim Roth is another awesome actor too 👍🏽.

    The Ruffalo-Norton timeline:
Director Louis Leterrier's first choice for this was apparently Ruffalo but he was unavailable. Marvel was excited at first to get Norton because he was also a creative type, a writer and director. The plan was for Norton to be Hulk in the Avengers. But he (apparently) clashed with the Marvel higher-ups and kept angling for more creative control on the Avengers film, which led to them parting ways. By that point, Ruffalo was available and he's been the Hulk ever since. Fun fact, Marvel has only replaced four main MCU actors (as opposed to the Marvel films produced by other studios). One was because an actor died, one because he was unavailable (I'll tell you when we get to those films) but the other two were because of disagreements: Norton as Hulk and Terrance Howard, who played Rhodey in Iron Man. When you do your Iron Man 2 reaction, you'll see Don Cheadle instead. Ruffalo and Cheadle are in for the long haul.
One thing to note, try to remember the names and actors of the supporting characters from this film, because the characters from this film have the longest gaps between appearances. General Ross doesn't appear again for 14 movies...the rest don't appear again until after Endgame. This makes this film kind of an anomaly compared to other MCU projects.
Fun fact since you mentioned you had already seen Thor: Ragnarok ... when Ruffalo makes his flying leap out of the spacecraft to become Hulk (but fails) that is a callback to Norton Hulk jumping out of the helicopter in this one.
On the Iron Man end credit scene... when Iron Man ended up being a success, they signed Sam Jackson to a NINE-PICTURE DEAL based solely on that post-credit cameo. At the time that was an insane thought, but no one's laughing now!!

Marvel originally wanted Mark Ruffalo for Hulk, but he was busy with another project and they got Norton. Norton was a diva and tried to control too much of the story, so they kicked him to the curb. By the time they had the Avengers movie ready to film, Ruffalo was available and we got the best version of the Hulk on film. About Samuel L Jackson: Marvel took a huge risk with him, as they basically signed him up for a whole slew of appearances, at a time when they didn't even know whether the "MCU" project would take off like they hoped.
Edward Norton, on the other hand, only did this one Hulk appearance. He was silently replaced with a different actor in the movies to come. "Silently" meaning that there's no story or anything where Bruce Banner would need facial surgery or something like that; he just looks different the next time you see him.

The best of which is this moment at 12:55, with Banner bribing the guard with a pizza. The guard is played by Lou Ferrigno, who played The Hulk in all five seasons of the series, all three made-for-TV Movies in the late 80’s-early 90’s, and even voiced the Hulk for the 1996 Animated Series; as well as on the first two Avengers films.

    "These are bad guys..."
When I first read a Hulk comic, at the age (probably) of about six or seven, it confused me no end. The Hulk was the title character, so he was the hero, right? He was the good guy. So why were the army and the police and everyone else always attacking him? Why couldn't they see he was a superhero? Why was he fighting against them, crushing tanks and destroying buildings? It took me some time to appreciate the character fully. He's like a cross between Frankenstein's monster and Dr Jekyll/ Mr Hyde. When written properly, he can be one of the more complex Marvel characters, and all the more interesting for it.
"You won't like me when I'm angry..."
I'm sure the phrase must have existed beforehand, but it really entered the public consciousness and became a kind of catch-phrase when it was used by the Hulk in the 1970s TV show. You could bank on it being used at least once in every episode (or it seemed that way!) I guess it was a kind of meme, before memes even existed!

From here on out, there's at least one credit scene, sometimes two. I think one of them down the road has four separate scenes. Glad you were able to add the scene from "Iron Man" to this one!
I'm not giving any spoilers here, but part of what makes the MCU interesting going forward is all of the crossover. I'm pretty sure you already understand that. This movie had a little bit of this at the end with Tony showing up, and some references to SHIELD. Crossover generally increases as we go forward, so you have to pay attention. New people aside from the title characters are added. I think you already know it, but keep an eye out for Stan Lee! Also, two of the richest men in the US happen to have cameos in the next film. Everybody tends to recognize one of them, but nobody seems to catch the other, as he has a relatively low media profile, so I'll point him out now: Larry Ellison of Oracle, who I think gets to say "Hey, Tony!" early in the film, just before Stan's cameo. He's currently #5 in the US. It's kind of funny how you can have hundreds of billions of dollars, be a key figure in the tech industry for decades, be in a major film, and still fly under the radar!

I really appreciate elements of this film, but it's far from my favorite take on the Hulk. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though! Personally, I feel like the depth of Hulk and Bruce Banner as a character really needs a whole TV series to be properly explored, which you just can't get across in a single film. Ang Lee's 2003 movie tried this, and in many ways, it was a cool, experimental film that stands out regardless of whether you think it's good or not. But for me, nothing comes close to the Hulk from the 1990s Incredible Hulk cartoon or Earth's Mightiest Heroes from 2010. Animated Hulk is just really well done, and that's partly thanks to animation being a lot cheaper than live action and the benefit of having a whole season to spread out storytelling across different story arcs.
    *MCU Origin:*
In the MCU, we don’t get much of Hulk’s origin story, as the film skips over it. However, the basics are summed up in the opening sequence. The U.S. government and army were working on replicating the Super Soldier Serum (which is important moving forward) for decades but to no avail. Banner was pressured by General Ross to take part in the project. In the end, Banner uses a special primer and exposes himself to too much gamma radiation, causing the experiment to "fail" as he transforms into the Hulk, injuring both Betty Ross and her father.
    Mainline Comics (Earth-616) Origin:
In the mainline comics, Bruce Banner’s origin involves a test on a new gamma bomb by the U.S. Army and General Ross at a nuclear test site. A teenager named Rick Jones wanders into the blast area, and Bruce tells his colleague Igor Starsky to stop the countdown. However, Igor, secretly a Soviet agent, does nothing, hoping Bruce would die in the explosion and the gamma project would be stopped. Bruce saves Rick by throwing him into a protective trench, but is hit by the gamma bomb himself, turning into the Hulk. This origin, introduced in Incredible Hulk #1 (1962), reflects the Cold War tensions of the 1960s something you'll notice across all Marvel comics during this time.
The Fantastic Four, for instance, emphasized the optimism surrounding space travel, portraying astronauts as celebrity figures, much like how the public viewed them during the Space Race. Spider-Man reflected the social unrest of the era, with students protesting the Vietnam War and many of Peter Parker's classmates being drafted, with Peter himself facing that possibility. Meanwhile, The X-Men highlighted the themes of bigotry and racism that were prevalent during the time.
    *Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) Origin:*
The MCU draws a lot from the Ultimate Universe, a modernized continuity from the 2000s. In this version, Nick Fury gathers a think tank in the late 1980s to early 1990s to recreate the Super Soldier Serum. Bruce Banner is part of this group and experiments on himself with a version of the serum, only to turn into the Hulk, injuring several people before fleeing. Two of the think tank members, Mary and Richard Parker. Peter Parker's parents were among those wounded in the process. This origin is quite similar to what happens in the MCU film, Ultimate Universe loved to tie a lot of characters' origins to the Super Soldier Serum, with everyone and their mother trying to recreate it. Each attempt resulting in different side effects. It was a unique take meant to "ground" the reality of that universe. However, I prefer the individual uniqueness of the mainline comics, where characters’ origins are less connected to each other, allowing for more diverse and distinct backstories.
There is a key difference to both the Mainline comics and the MCU: Ultimate Hulk has a much darker side, as he engages in cannibalism and often eats his victims. The Ultimate comics had a much edgier, grittier tone, which made certain elements hit or miss for a lot of readers, including myself. So I'm glad the MCU reflected more of the Mainline comics.
    *MCU Mixture:*
The MCU is like a melting pot of mainline Marvel comics, the Ultimate Universe, and its own unique changes to characters, events, and places. For the Hulk, the MCU blends elements from both the gamma radiation and General Ross aspects of the mainline comics with the Super Soldier Serum program from the Ultimate Universe. Personally, I like both origin stories. The gamma bomb incident is heroic and a cool concept, while connecting the Hulk to the Super Soldier Serum adds a different, more tragic layer. Both origins offer unique and compelling aspects to the character.

Forgot to mention but the reason this film skipped the origin story is that it had already been explored a few years earlier in Ang Lee's Hulk (2003). We do get a brief recap of the origin during the opening credits with the film jumping ahead to when Bruce is on the run. This makes it less of an origin film and more like "another day in the life" of Bruce Banner. However, we do see the emergence of his villains, so you could argue that this film serves as more of an origin story for his villain roster than for the Hulk himself.

The "science" behind the Hulk is explained in weirdly-high detail, as comic book science goes: The original process to make super soldiers involved injecting the subject with a serum, and then bombarding them with "Vita" radiation. After the original process was lost, the military was able to scrape the serum together from blood samples of test subjects, but they could never recreate the Vita radiation. So, they tried other kinds of radiation. The Hulk is the result of replacing the Vita rays with Gamma rays (and some unique genetic characteristics of Bruce Banner).

In Captain America 1 they created a Super Soldier Serum that was essentially perfect and made Captain America who he was, but the research was lost and many countries around the world have tried replicating it but couldn't get it exactly right which makes it result in strong but not as strong candidates or freaks and monsters they can't control as easily such as the Hulk.
Bruce took a version of the Super Soldier Serum. Bruce thought Gamma Rays would get the results Ross was searching for but was wrong. Although it was technically a failure, Ross saw this as an opportunity. The serum he gave Blonsky was only a small dose of an experimental version of it as to keep him focused on the mission, so that serum had unpredictable results with a full dosage and he wasn't as strong as the Hulk. And Blonsky was advised there could be negative side effects.

That 3rd transformation always gets me with how painful it is for Bruce Banner to transform into Hulk. Also, one of Hulk's abilities is that he draws more strength from his anger. The angrier he gets, the more powerful he becomes. To answer any questions, Bruce Banner's grasp over Hulk depends on HOW he transforms. If it happens voluntarily, Hulk has more of an ability to reason and comprehend things. But if it happens through uncontrollable stimuli like anger, Hulk is the living equivalent of a wrecking ball.

The intro to this movie, where they tell the origin of the Hulk, is a copy/ homage to the Incredible Hulk TV show, which aired in the U.S. from the late 70s to early 80s on CBS. The muscular security guard they show on the school campus is Lou Ferigno, the actor who played the actual "Hulk" as they couldn't use CGI then, and make him big like the comics and this movie, so they painted a muscular guy green. The famous line, "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" that they played with during the intro, is from an episode of the TV series, and used in the intro.
They also did the homage in the movie intro telling the origin story because just 5 years earlier in 2003(before Marvel got the film rights back) Universal made a Hulk movie simply titled, Hulk, directed by Ang Lee (crouching tiger, hidden dragon) and starring Eric Bana (Hector in Troy) as Bruce Banner, Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross.and Sam Elliott as General Thunderbolt Ross. It might be on Disney plus as well. It was the 1st CGI hulk, but the movie lacked action, and tried to delve more into the psychological trauma of Bruce.
And they had to get the rights back because in the 90s Marvel Comics went bankrupt and had to sell the movie rights to studios to stay afloat. 20th century fox got stuff like Fantastic 4, X-men, Sony bought Spider-Man (and still own his movie rights to this day, thus why they make movies with characters that appeared in Spider-Man comics 1st, like Venom, Madam Web, and Morbius.)
2006 Marvel took out a loan to make their own movies with the characters they had left, the biggest characters they had left were Avengers characters like Iron-Man, Thor, Hulk, etc. Iron-Man and this movie were both released Summer of 2008, Iron-Man was a huge hit. (This movie actually did about the same business as the 2003 Hulk) Then in 2011, as they were filming the Avengers, Disney bought Marvel comics, which of course includes the movies they were making. And a few years later bought the 20th Century Fox movie catalog, thus giving Marvel the movie rights back for characters like X-men and Fantastic Four. Thus how you got Deadpool and Wolverine as an MCU movie this past summer.
Last, here's the intro for the TV series. In the show they called him David Banner, (made Bruce hus middle name, you see it on the tombstone in the intro) because a producer at the time thought Bruce sounded too gay.

Welcome to the MCU! Happy to have a new reactor to watch enjoy these movies for the first time.
A couple of things: While there isn't a post credit scene for "The Incredible Hulk", there are these short films that came out that add a little extra to the first bunch of Marvel movies. They are called Marvel One-Shots and are considered canon. Here is how they line up:
"The Consultant" should be watched after "Iron Man 2" (4 min run time)
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To Thor's Hammer" should be watched before "Thor" (4 min run time)
"Item 47" should be watched after "The Avengers" (8 min run time)
"Agent Carter" happens one year after the events of "Captain America: The FIrst Avenger" (14 min run time)
"All Hail The King" takes place after the events of "Iron Man 3". (14 min run time)
And, about the tv show "Agents of SHIELD", you should not watch it until after you've seen "Iron Man 3". The show is an excellent show, and still rates 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. The show, through the first few seasons lines up with the movie releases. Unfortunately, as time went on, and studio politics got involved between Marvel's Movie and Television divisions, the sharing of info got less and less. So the movie tie-ins got less and less. But the show remained an excellent show. You can look up how the shows line up with the movies, so that you don't spoil either.
Looking forward to following your journey through the MCU!

Back when I was on a big movie binge in the late 2000's, Edward Norton was one of my favorite actors, so I really enjoyed his character here! Liv Tyler was a welcome sight too. In general there's just soooo many great actors and actresses in the MCU!
I remember, this movie exceeded my expectations so much back when I originally watched it. I wasn't too sure what to expect really, but enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would! I think in general, I just loved the personal side of it and getting to know the man inside Hulk. With these MCU movies so far, sure they're action packed superhero movies, but I've loved all the character development throughout them. With Tony finding his purpose, and Bruce here finding and accepting himself within
Just speaking for myself, I love that you're on the left side now! With the way my monitors are set up for the Patreon watch-alongs, you being on the left works out so much better for me haha

The serum the General gave the middle-aged soldier isn't the same treatment Bruce had, it's something left over from an older, less "successful" program by different scientists with a different biochemical approach but the same goal. The General is unable to replicate Bruce's work -- primarily because he doesn't have the data Bruce has hidden (and swallowed here), but presumably also because Bruce destroyed a bunch of stuff when he first turned into the Hulk. Plus he doesn't have Bruce's expertise or the access to study him.

Here is an interesting thought, back in the 1950's and yes I'm dating myself, there was a movie called the amazing colossal man, in the movie a soldier gets caught near a nuclear test and somehow survives the explosion, in fact so much so his body starts regenerating at an alarming rate and starts to grow. Now I firmly believe that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee were inspired by this movie because in the comics Bruce Banner gets caught in a Gamma explosion and survives and becomes the Hulk.

So whoever told you "the hulk has no post credit scene " wasn't technically wrong. But that's also why this one doesn't really do a full-on 'origin' story, since it had been done just a few years before. You might even want to check it out if not but for comparison.

The government will continue to go after Hulk because regardless of how the situation turned out, it is basically two things that drive them. Either they want to continue to develop the Hulk's blood to make better soldiers and if he doesn't agree to work alongside the government well then the hunt goes on. Or, if they see they can't control it, then they will want to destroy it. It is kind of like a child mentality of "If I can't have it then nobody can have it." There was pretty much a similar thing with Superman. Even though there is this entity, this super being that is helping to save lives, if the government can't control it, they will view it as a threat and there for try to destroy it or to manipulate/control it in some way. I have seen many super hero movies and that story line seems to still stick around. If you want some background on the Hulk, up to you if you want to make it a react video, but I recommend you watch 2003 Hulk movie. It is pretty much a different story line but that one does go into like how things were before he became the hulk. Pretty much the main story line that was shown at the beginning of this film during the intro. Anyways, I look forward to your journey through the MCU. Once a reactor gets started on the MCU journey, even though I would have to wait a few days til the next reaction video in the series, it still in a way feels like I gotta wait months like we all originally did having to wait for the movies to release over the span of a decade or so. lol

Good reaction! I will say that Hulk isn’t evil. He’s really was only trying to defend himself from anyone that attacks him. He’s also a separate entity living in Bruce’s body. Stan Lee (Hulk’s creator who also created most of the Marvel characters) said that one of the things he based Hulk on was the Frankenstein monster in that they’re both seen as misunderstood creatures who try to do good or be left alone but people keep treating them as “monsters.” Bruce & Hulk at some point learned to co-exist in the comics after Bruce realizes that Hulk isn’t a monster but a creature wanted to be accepted. Spider-Man is actually one of the first to see Hulk as mistreated because he can relate because half of the public view Spider-Man as a menace. ^^

I absolutely love that's what Stan Lee envisioned for Hulk. I wish we would have seen a bit more of that in this movie- but it is only his original/struggles so far so we can better understand who he is. I do wish they would have kept Edward Norton because I thought he made a great hulk!
Thank you so much for the super! Glad you enjoyed this one. See you in Iron Man 2 next!

    • @ldkinbote
      @ldkinbote Місяць тому

@@kaliwali Yes, Stan said he based the idea for the Hulk on both Frankenstein's monster and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. So you can see the changing part into a monstrous personality being the Jekyll/Hyde thing and the way people treat him, as a monster, as the Frankenstein part 'cause the Hulk isn't like Mr. Hyde in that he's not the dark side of Banner, but more Banner's protector. Think of someone who has D.I.D., so when they're threatened, a protector personality emerges as a coping mechanism. The personality may be tough, but not evil. He comes out when Banner needs protecting and saves his life, but when he's forced out, he kinda lashes out at anything he perceives as threatening which might be anyone nearby.
One thing they don't say, but they show, is that the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he gets. Blonsky (The Abomination) is base-level bigger and stronger than the Hulk, but during the fight, you see Hulk getting angrier and he eventually overpowers The Abomination (and yes, that is his name in the comics 😁). I'd heard it said that Hulk's strength limit is, theoretically, infinite since there's no telling just how angry he can get.
Also, you asked why Betty stopped him from killing Blonsky, she doesn't want to see Bruce become a murderer. Hulk does kill people, but usually unintentionally and the people are collateral damage of his rampages. Another reason people view him as a monster. This movie takes place early in his... "career" so they didn't have a lot of confirmed deaths linked to the Hulk, although they did mention potentially a couple of hunters, I think.

  • @shawnkroll3950
    @shawnkroll3950 Місяць тому

The Hulk is a "protector" yes he gets angry, but he uses that anger to protect or self defense. You see that in end when Hulk turns his back on his adversary to save Betty from fire on helicopter. The abomination on the other hand wanted the power and uses his anger and rage on others. Bruce is the Hulk and Hulk is Bruce..they are one in the same..Bruce didn't start to realize that until Betty mentioned that he recognized and even while anger strives to protect. Glad you enjoyed the movie. I prefer Ed's version on Hulk cause yes he is scary...but in a lot of ways Hulk and Wolverine stories are similar...military wants them as weapons, but they are men. Why Betty and Charles were so important because they saw the men not a weapon. And the guy wasn't addicted he was power hungry before the gamma treatment. Also, no Betty didn't want The Hulk / Bruce to kill him because it may change him. Bruce as a man is not a killer. AKA killing leaves mental scars and could cause him more trauma.
