The portrayal of Dike is not entirely accurate. He was actually pretty highly decorated prior to his time with Easy. Part of why he "froze" during the attack on Foy is because he was actually wounded. IIRC the rest of Easy did not know that. This is also told from Easy's point of view and they just did not like Dike, whether justified or not, so we have a bit of a unreliable narrator effect with Dike.

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive of WWII wherein they committed almost half a million men from three armies from their Army Group B. The defense of Bastogne was critical as it prevented the Germans access to key roads essential to their success.

Most soldiers get little to no training with sidearms, which are typically close to useless in a combat environment, so they may not know how to handle them safely. If you choose to keep a round in the chamber a pistol should always be carried in a good quality holster which covers the trigger guard as a safety. You should never put them unholstered in a pocket or your waistband, as so often seen in movies ("Hollywood" often produces scenes displaying incompetent gun handling).

If Patton and the 3rd Army had not broken through then there wouldn't be a 101st airborne. They would of eventually been overrun and slaughtered. Plus its disrespectful to all those soldiers who suffered and died to break through. Don't be fooled. Anyone with any real knowledge of the battle would agree. The 101st needed to be rescued. Only thing about this episode that so greatly annoys me.

The men shaving mohawks while they're prepping to board were members of a demolition team called The Filthy Thirteen. They were tasked with demoing bridges in Normandy. Only two of them weren't killed or captured. The movie and book The Dirty Dozen is loosely based on them.

Before anyone criticizes Norman Dike, you should know he was awarded a Bronze star at Bastogne for dragging a wounded soldier to cover in full view of the enemy. He had fought with the 506th since Normandy and had been awarded his first Bronze star in Holland. Like Sobel, Dike was not cut out to be a company commander, especially in a situation like Bastogne (which was unexpected). In Winters after action report, he stated that Dike came to Easy Company with what we call PTSD nowadays. He ended up as General Taylor's aide and retired a Lieutenant Colonel. Lt. Buck Compton also fell apart at Bastogne before Dike did. After Toye and Guarnear was hit, he ran away from the line, earning him a severe reprimand from Winters. Unless you know the actual story you cant make comparisons between these guys or make judgements. I am not blaming you for anything as you are just following the story but these BOB reaction videos are a bit dangerous because of the negativity toward certain vets reputations. Every single man in this series was a hero despite the disgraceful narrative of the writers.

Thank you for this reaction. A lot of people share your feelings - this episode is heartbreaking. What Winters said about the bond among Easy Company veterans for the rest of their lives really resonated. I saw the same thing when I got to see a fiftieth anniversary reunion of Marines who had fought on Iwo Jima. It's hard enough in peacetime watching a bad leader take over the unit you've led and not being able to do anything about it - I was a company commander, and had a strong connection with the Marines in my company (though nothing like the one Winters had with these men.) Then my first sergeant and I both got transferred and a different CO and first sergeant took over. They were both pretty incompetent and both didn't seem to care much about looking out for their Marines. Any time I ran into one of the guys from the company in the PX or somewhere they would come up to say hello and then tell me how lousy it was now. Every time I saw that new CO I wanted to grab him and shake him until he rattled, and he wasn't even getting people wounded or killed, just demoralized. I can't even imagine what it would have been like watching my people dying because their lives were in the hands of an incompetent, indifferent leader like Dike. Leadership is a sacred trust. When you have life or death power over people, you owe them every bit of the absolute best you have to give them. Someone like Dike seems incapable of even grasping that concept.

The pistol Hobbler was carrying got caught on barbwire and it went off. Easy Company by their own admission didn't really like replacement officers because they weren't Winters he had set such a high standard so they may aswel been as incompetent as portrayed to Easy Company but Lieutenant Dike is portrayed as being an incompetent coward. However, in real life he performed many acts of heroics. For example, Dike was awarded a Bronze Star for his action at Uden, Holland, with the 101st Airborne Division between 23 and 25 September 1944, in which he “organized and led scattered groups of parachutists in the successful defense of an important road junction on the vital Eindhoven (sic)-Arnhem Supply Route against superior and repeated attacks, while completely surrounded." Dike was awarded a second Bronze Star for his action at Bastogne, in which "he personally removed from an exposed position, in full enemy view, three wounded members of his company, while under intense small arms fire" on 3 January 1945. In preparation for the 13 January 1945 attack on Foy, Belgium, E Company was attached to the 3rd Battalion, 506th PIR. Division Headquarters ordered the attack to begin at 0900 hours. During the assault, Carwood Lipton, at that time the company's first sergeant, described Dike as having "fallen apart." Clancy Lyall stated that he saw that Dike had been wounded in his right shoulder and that it was the wound, not panic, that caused Dike to stop. Dike survived the assault, and eventually returned to the rear in the company of a medic. Afterwards, he was transferred to 506th Regimental Headquarters to become an assistant operations officer. Dike then moved on to become, as a captain, an aide to General Maxwell Taylor, Commanding General, 101st Airborne Division. He later served in the Korean War. I do think aswel they massively over dramatised Dikes supposed breakdown i just don't understand how they could do that to someone im not slanting the men of Easy but for Ambrose to take these for batem and not cross check what they told him.
