You don't technically need one if you have an open system. If you have an inlet check valve, then you need an expansion tank, since the heating/expanding water has no where to go. All that extra pressure could damage the tank. If you have an open system the extra pressure/heated water will backflow to the grid, which is fine physically but you're wasting money on heating
What does the expansion tank do actually? Our home doe not have one and the plumbers never mentioned it when the installed something for me.
