  • I want to protect my headlights but can't decide how to do it. I could go the traditional route and use clear PPF. But I want something different so I decided to try out some tint. Not sure if I like it though. I might have my detailer try the matte PPF. What would you do?

Ouch, the tinted headlight clearly has increased diffuse glare.
Get ready to get flashed by oncoming traffic on a regular basis.

I have mine covered in clear PPF to protect them from rocktrips, matte might diffuse the light but not sure how much. Likely it will reduce brightness too (not as much as tint), im also not sure how much. Not sure if I like the look or not, but I would go for function over looks.

Tinting lights is usually illegal simply because it reduces what the cars light output was approved for. If you have an accident, I wouldn't be surprised for the insurance company to use that against you.

I've used Xpel headlight protectors for many years and swear by them. It's like PPF but much thicker and really protects from large rocks and sand. The vehicles I drove in Colorado before I started using the protectors would be sandblasted and pitted in a few years but with the protectors stayed looking new as long as I had the car (11 years in one case). You could compare around the edges where there was no protection (not noticable unless you knew and were looking for it) and could see the night and day difference the Xpel protectors made. It's one of the first things I did to my Model S.
As for the tinting, I'm not a fan. I actually don't mind the look, but the reduced light output really bothers me. If I were doing that, I would use the hard plastic ones you can easily pop off at night so it doesn't affect output when you need it. Removing and replacing them would probably get old in a hurry though.

I still want to know if that front lip upgrade increased your range. I'm thinking of getting their whole aero efficiency kit (including lowering springs) which they claim will increase freeway range by about 43 miles. That'd make a LR RWD Model 3 have almost 400 miles of range!

The unlit tint looks real nice with the colour of the white. Makes the lights section stand out. But, of course, you won't see this as much cause the lights are almost always on.
I had a question about the indicator lights and wanted to ask you guys this. Do you guys know if it's possible to have a dual-colour indicator light? I would imagine that it's possible to program it so that when the light is solid, it acts as part of the brake lights, and when it flashes, it flashes amber/yellow (left turn, right turn, or hazard lights). I'm patiently waiting to purchase a Model 3 and would love to have that as perhaps an after-market upgrade. I'm originally from the UK and am used to seeing yellow/amber rear indicators. Cheers guys, love your channel! -Michael

Matte tint may always cause glare because it diffuses the light. That’s why it looks matte. It scatters light just like dirty headlights with winter salty road film cause glare (which other drivers will flash you for). I wonder how the headlights would look with a much lighter, but not clear, gloss tint.

I am going with No tint. Well i am very neutral about the rear lights. I like both. But in the headlights the tint makes it lool like it is so much bigger than the untinted. I guess it effects "extra" because the car is white and inside the headlight it has white (wich turns into black with the tint) and then it is also how much light it kills (according to the phone light meter thing hehe) my 2 cents

I would propose actually cutting the tint halfway up the headlight, tinting only the lower half and leaving the "lighter" area on the top exposed. I think that would look better. It would just accentuate the the light and dark contrast of the headlight. So maybe cutting a long the upper ridge of the headlight, you'd have to have a steady and light hand with your blade though. I'd be curious to see how that looks. I also think your tint would look better on a dark car.

The original was a far more sophisticated look. Not sure why you would want to reduce the effectiveness of a safety feature in the first place. I agree with David. Clear protection, yeah sure, why not but definitely not the tinted version. Not sure what your insurance company would think about it.
