Since no else has made this suggestion I will. Folding fins that are canted at an angle to spin the canister. This may slow down the canister and help spread the flechettes due to centrifugal force.
Never been here. Im getting StyroPyro vibes. Subscribed, after first 18s. Im with StyroPyro from the beginning, now he's a legend. Be the next legend in cannons !
This reminds me of when I was with the 1st/155mm Howitzer Btry [self propelled], 4thBn/11th Marines [reinforced], at 29 Palms Ca, in the 1980s And it was called the "beehive" because of the bussing sounds it made when going down range
Perhaps a sabot style can, 2 halves lengthwise with a space for the flichets inside, indexing pins to hold the halves together properly, perhaps a short cap at the bottom to initially 'lock' them together for loading.
To get a better spread on the flechettes, put them in a bag instead of a can. Or a cardboard can. Flechettes are usually delivered by a bursting charge not from the barrel directly. Try a bag of lead fishing sinkers for scaled-down grapeshot.
Good video as always sir 😊... I do wonder what flew by the camera lol. For breaking them appart why not cut the wad down just a tad on the exterior walls and cut it like a shot cup... and hold the bundle together with a rubber band that way you have the pushing force and they cam expand... just a thought
I think it might have been the shot cup? I saw that too! We use to cut them up but it seems to make no difference with heavy things but I wonder if the lighter ones would have worked more like a shotgun. That might make sense as to why birdshot cups are cut...
@TheCannoneer so the running theory is if you under cut the shot cup it will expand like petals or a discarding sabot, for a spread shot you only need them pushed uniformly through the barrel then it should have some kind of drag that seperates the shot cup releasing the shot if that makes sense...again just a theory looking at how shotgun shells perform
Use a solid pusher (machined Delrin -OR- PETG/PA12, 100% infill) for the base with discarding petals (PVC pipe strips or heavy cardboard) so the flechettes don't need to break anything in order to spread.
To get the darts to spread out faster I suggest trying a cardboard cylinder. The cardboard cylinder in a roll of toilet paper or paper towels is slightly greater in diameter then your cannon’s bore but are easily unrolled and can be rolled tighter to fit the bore, then taped or glued to size. They will require something solid to act as a wad, but should fly apart quicker then the plastic tube did
Try PLA canister walls, pla base wads. that way the canister is more likely to shatter in the barrel. awesome shots with flechettes, slow enough for them to fin stabilize, enough of them for effect on target, enough target to have a good chance of impacts. all reasons they don't do well in shotguns, and do well in high angle howitzer shells
If you saw the tank canister rounds that's how they are designed and they worked really well. Sadly we hadn't filmed that one yet but I think the PLA canisters are the better option.
Just an idea, maybe try to 3D print self discarding sabot to help the projectiles disperse in tighter groups but not a large pattern. Well done with the last shot
One of y'all suggested it so long ago and I've had them forever but we can't shoot them at our normal ranges because of animals and their feet so had to wait for a trip to that range!
Another great show! Thank you for all of your exciting and entertaining content! I would love to see you hook up with the slow mo guys, None of the other guntubers have a cannon, you would be an excellent Addition to the community!
Slit the canister most of the way through, should be enough to peel it open to get 4 petals. You're not going to get much out of them at black powder speeds though, most of the APERS rounds had timed burst charges and drove them at "shrapnel velocity", and every note I find says they lose almost 400fps per 100M. The 50's-60's experiments in 'needle guns' were tossing larger darts at 4000+ fps too.
Dropping the projectiles in a column of water and filming their fall should give a good idea of how well they will fly since it's likely that they are subsonic. ( And as such I am totally expecting a cannon silencer).
I would suggest using a paper cup like a dixie cup. modified by cutting so that it will fit down the barrel, then use a couple single wraps of tape to hold it together in the cannon. it will come out of the barrel like a shotgun with a bit more spread than the printed canister you are using. Great video.
Thanks! We started with the dixie cups way back when but I didn't think of using tape to hold the shot in. That's the hardest part! Thanks for the suggestion!
I wonder if you placed the flechettes in wax like a slug, maybe the blast would destroy the wax while also helping propel them out of the barrel? Like, 100 flechettes.
You could probably make a very crude APFSDS round with a lathe and band saw, just turn down the projectile from steel or something, turn down the sabot as one piece too out of aluminum and then cut the sabot into individual petals with the band saw and the put some groove on the projectile and the inside surface of the sabot to have the projectile actually launch and not have the sabot sliding
Could you design the canister in such a way that pressure from ignition causes the canister base *to act as a wedge, forcing the sides of the canister outwards. I'm picturing a Minié ball kind of action inside the barrel, and once out of the barrel the canister will want to spread out, hopefully encouraging the flechettes to spread as well
Oof! You are getting really accurate with the regular cannonball now! Always a challenge with the new shots, which are great to see, but you hard to predict what each will do 🙂
Oh yeah with a lead ball it's deadly accurate, especially with that red dot! Right? I figured those things would just spread and go everywhere but they seem to just stick together into a giant mass...
I’d like to see some accurate impacts on watermelons with a better slowmo camera if you can find a way.
