Here's my hypothesis on the Customs aspect:
Yes, sometimes it's "who you know," but that doesn't always equate to bad/criminal. It can simply mean that someone messed up paperwork and someone with a verified reputation stepped in to "fix" it.
In other words, satisfying Customs the vehicle's intended importation purpose was legitimate, the required fees will be paid, and the paperwork will be sorted. i.e. this is all would be perfectly legal if the paperwork were filed correctly i.e. let's use some discretion... plus, a reminder Customs may be liable for any damage sustained while the vehicle is in their custody.
Not a problem for legitimate mistakes, as this situation clearly appeared. Totally different story if the importation was intended to be illegal and it was more than a paperwork issue.
Yeah, for nobodies like me it may not seem fair, but it's not necessarily illegal. On a smaller scale, plenty people benefit from officer discretion every day.
......well....customs agents ARE all FEDERAL agents....so....they USUALLY dont really respond to the....wrong.....kind....of pressure

It doesn't even need to be that Deep. If you know someone with a Security Clearance, it's very easy to say "this needs to come through". I used to be a DoD Employee and had a Security Clearance that expired in 2017. Even YEARS after I left that job, but before my Clearances expired, I was able to use my Clearance to enter Military Bases halfway across the Country doing a completely different job. I've crossed the US Mexico Border through Legal Checkpoints with absolutely no searches just by presenting my DoD ID Badge. They didn't even ID the other person in the Car once they saw my ID Badge.
Security is only as good as the people providing it. It was either a Cash Bribe OR it was someone with some kind of Clearance. Removing a Car like that makes me wonder if that Call went to some Congressman or likely in Socal it would be a Retired Military Officer and he sent a Friend.
@@justinlast2lastharder749 Or, it could be a perfectly valid use of "discretion." It's as simple as, this is a paperwork issue that can and will be easily rectified so let's not make a mountain out of a molehill.
Not everything has to be nefarious, and there have been numerous cases of things being detained for petty reasons. Spirit of the law versus letter of the law. "Shall" detain versus "may" detain.
It's far more likely they called a skilled lawyer who specializes in import/export to point out what I've said and it's perfectly above-board.
That's not "deep" or complex. It's pretty simple and routine.

Airport in atlanta has some shady, shady stuff. Any given time i'd say 10-25% of the people working there are stealing from customwrs, lying about safety stuff they arwn't doing, or bullying people for no reason.

You can't get through customs with bribes- too risky, and too difficult to make the mounds of paperwork disappear. My money is on a very well versed lawyer who not only knows customs procedure, but politically connected.

Gilbert, AZ. Your far south in the desert or San Tan/Queen Creek where at 2008/2009 is damn near empty after the crash. But now all that is built up like crazy. Gilbert police will arrest you and impound that car if caught... real aholes. DPS might ticket or arrest. In AZ, 20+ over is felony speeding and arrest/impound. But usually descresion of the officer.
Bribery works the same all over the world.

@@Mark-vn7et Don't be daft..I drive a Kia or a Dacia to work depending on what they give me to drive. 280kmh is not strange in an M sport diesel, it could do that from factory without the tuning. That is not supercar speed in any conceivable way. Spyker could only be considered "supercar" because of its exclusivity, build materials and price tag. Its performance is not supercar standard. Its a mid 2000's diesel 3.0d+ standard.
@@BurningSkyy sure it is buddy, first off bmw limits the speed to 250km so there goes your claim with tuning. Second I’ve owned a couple of high horsepower Germans including an M5, I took it on a backroad to 240km for a small time and that was scary as hell and way above what was safe! A proper German diesel will take twice as much time to get to that speed. But go ahead and show me the proof, and if you really did what you say you did you don’t value your life
@Mark-vn7et Yes they do limit the speed to 250kmh, but you can pay extra for the limit to be 280kmh. I'm happy to email you a picture of my vehicle order that raises the limiter. I don't disagree that it's unsafe speed, but it's more than capable. My car is only moderately tuned to not ruin the lifetime of the engine, ¼ mile is 12.6, which is pretty slow, but its a rwd diesel, so not all that bad. Top speed is 280kmh with a fuel cut off limiter, without the limiter I'd expect 290/295kmh from the performance and rev range when the limiter kicks in. 0-100kmh is 4.9, 0-200 is 19.3. I've not measured above that, but if you really think it's impossible for a tuned 335d e9x platform to make those numbers then you're massively mistaken. I've been to drag events where a 320d was early 11's with a big single turbo, and a first gen 1 series running early 10's. The bmw diesel platform is very capable, the Mercedes OM60# platform is even more capable.
@Mark-vn7et ohh and don't forget to bear in mind that horsepower isn't the only factor here. You might have had an M5 with high horsepower, no doubt that would be a quick car, but it has very little torque and it's gearing and diff are set up for acceleration. A diesel sports car is a very different game, the acceleration is sub-par and if you push the torque, very uncontrollable. Performance numbers don't mean much on the individual capabilities of cars, an E92 M3 would be considerably faster 0-100 than me, 100-200 is a questionable session, 200-280 is considerably faster for the diesel. The high torque, diff ratio and gear ratio would put the the M3 to shame at those speeds, but an M3 would put my car to shame around a tight track where acceleration and handling matter most. I don't know why this has become the focus of conversation. Moderate horsepower diesels with, on average, 2x torque are very capable of high speeds. The point was, a diesel BMW can easily do 280kmh, why are they making it out like this very expensive supercar is brilliant because it can go 280kmh. That's not fast, it's not the 1990's.

Probably not. Most likely a case of: someone screwed up the paperwork and made what would otherwise be lawful appear unlawful and someone of repute arrived to vouch for it. So here, we'll fix the paperwork, ensure the fees will be paid, and you can choose to continue holding this very valuable item over a mistake being corrected as we speak (and possibly be liable for damages sustained while in your care) or let the vehicle proceed while the mistake is being corrected. Either way, the vehicle will proceed.
It would be a different story if there wasn't any legal way to import the vehicle.
Simply put: Whoever showed up satisfied Customs the vehicle was intended to be imported legally and verified it would be imported legally. Assuming, of course, there actually was an issue with the paperwork as Vinny wasn't even sure what Customs issue was. It wouldn't be the first federal agency to misinterpret their own laws (looks at IRS and BATFE).

Its a Cool Story, until he brags about 175 mph. Bruh, my first car, a 2002 Volkswagon Golf GTI hit almost 200 on the Speedometer and the only upgrades that thing had was the 1.8L 20v Turbo 4 Banger got swapped for a 2.0 Turbo from an Audi TT Quattro.
