    What a nice example of how far a fairly minimalist processing approach takes you when you spend way more time listening to what you want to do instead of going straight into tweaking! Very cool video!

    Hey Warren, had a laugh today after spending over an hour attempting to surgically recover this muffled kick.
    when I thought I lost all hope, out of the blue, something you said years ago popped in my head about always needing to stick a super narrow cut at 110 hz on your kicks.
    As a final effort, I cleared my maxed-out chain of EQ debauchery and gave it a shot and was jaw dropped how it magically salvaged it.
    Thanks for that!

    Hey Warren. Please would you consider doing a video on recording drums with totally bare minimum equipment and getting a passable sound. 3-4 mics, no samples. maybe have a little mess around with that Glyn Johns technique(one mic on the bass drum and two over the kit). would be interested to see what kind of results you get with such a setup. Im gonna start recording my drums with such a setup real soon😬

    I meant to add , at the moment I am using my TD 30 electric kit directly into a Sapphire 56 focus rite and use a matched pair of rectangular ribbon mics as overheads with a AKG c414 as a mono room mic. I am looking at purchasing suitable mics for my DW acoustic kit hence my interest in the Lewitt set up. Through the above though I can record live bands and it sounds pretty good.

    I love the Lewitt DTP 640 REX. I am thinking about buying one. What element did you use? Dynamic or condenser? O maybe mixed? There is my set: D112 and Yamaha subkick for bass drum, Beta 57 for snare top, C1000 for snare bottom (the old one with hipercardioid adapter), e940 for toms, e 914 for hi hats and ride, C 3000 for overheads (I want to buy a pair of lewitt 441 flex), a Rode nt4 for room (up the head of the drummer), a pair of Audio Technica ATM 450 for a wide room response, and a c414 XLII for a mono room. My room is not so big but it sounds really nice.

  • @Noeway22
    @Noeway22 4 роки тому +2

    I usually use Sm57s or e609s on snare, always match and always top and bottom
    On kick, i use a sE V Kick (latest addition. love it) or d112 (not my favorite) usually just one inside
    vintage Md-421-2s on the toms, sometimes use the d112 on the lowest tom
    Either a Cascade x-15 or 2 AKG C214s for overheads.
    No room mics, the room is heavy carpet and low celing (mobile home from the 70s) so the room is a really tight sound
    Cheers

    Even though the giveaway is over, I'm still posting my setup.
    I really dig the Presonus Xmax converters.
    And Eureka channel strip... great strip on a budget. Fragile though. Don't bump it...😆 pots break if you look at them wrong. But I have extras to solder in that the Presonus support guys were kind enough to sell me.
    CAD Black Pearl pencils for overheads, Audix D6 kick, just inside. 57s on snare, and toms. A very old radio shack pencil condenser with a AA battery for the hats. Old AT4033 for a room mic. Ambassador and emperor heads. Presonus Eureka fir the Kick, and another for Snare, the rest go into a Presonus D8 Digimax.
    I think I get a pretty good drum sound on a very tight budget. A lot has to do with room treatment as well.

  • @Polentaccio
    @Polentaccio 4 роки тому +1

    Glad I invested in an Audient ID14 and ASP880 a while back. The 880 allows me to bypass the preamps which the ASP800 doesn't so I can use external mic pre or hardware units. That said, I think your figures might be a bit off as the ID44 isn't that cheap and you likely expanded it with the ASP800. Then on top of that, you had the mics. I'd say your setup is close to 2500$. Still less than what you would pay in a fancy studio though yes!

    Hey Warren I've got a vocal recording issue, I would love to hear your take. A singer I record is always complaining about the level/sound in her headphones. I never seem to be able to give her enough volume even when it's pumped. Also she wants to hear the vocal with FX, reverb etc as she says that's what she had back in the day. Surely the vocal should be dry and unaffected when tracking focusing on the raw performance? Obviously in the box the system can't process and playback the vocal with FX when recording. Have you ever encountered this with a vocalist wanting a 'playback' sound when recording? Isn't an engineer who gives a vocalist reverb when recording engaging in bad practice?

    • @OrgChromer
      @OrgChromer 4 роки тому

      A little reverb helps the singer with their pitch! If your current system can't handle putting some reverb in her feed, a hardware reverb or a monitor mixer with an FX section could be an inexpensive zero-latency solution.

      Everybody is an expert on how you do your own things. The D12 was my first mic, in the 90’s I was happy with my D112 but then I discovered the Beta 52 and that’s the one I’m still using. Then I saw you using the D112, so I thought, let’s try it again, but no, doesn’t work for me.... But Now I’m wondering about the Lewitt....😀

      Hi@@socialbeats1 Interesting, people usually dislike the D112 because they find it too scooped (they still prefer the D12), the Beta 52 is even more scooped sounding. So your dislike is coming from the opposite place of most arguments against the D112 I read and hear. If you like the Beta but want something less 'metallic' sounding, then I would suggest the Sennheiser e602, it's wonderful! If however, it sounds like you prefer a more hyped sound, so try the Audix D6, that really is even more agressive than the Shure Beta 52.

      Hi@@drummerjeroensimons Yes, I agree it sounds as though Timothy likes a more aggressive scooped sound and the Audix D6 is all that and more!
