I'm genuinely impressed how big the change is, despite using only a few plugins and few EQ stuff here and there, nothing fancy, nothing drastic/extreme - and even with those subtle changes, it took over hour real work and ears,
many thanks for taking time into making this live session

That was awesome, Warren,. Thank you. I have to try the tom trick on my next mix. So far, I've always completely removed the bleeding between the single tom hits manually. Never had the idea to gain it down. I'm curious to hear the difference. Learned something new today. I love it!

The amount of teaching content you manage to put out, let alone the amount you put out for FREE, while also working your day job, is staggering. I value so much all of the content I get from you and how it helps me get better at audio. Your always great attitude would make working for you at a studio a total dream job for myself and I'm sure for many more. Keep doing what you do

This video was marvelously helpful and many thanks for sharing it. I have not had the opportunity, but understand micing and recording drums properly is one of the most challenging aspects of recording/mixing, however you presented this in a fashion that even a child could understand. One of the eye opening moments is when you EQed the low mids of the kick and mostly muted the snare bleed instead of gating (a concept I am still trying to learn). In your book you talk about making moves with intentions and asking yourself why are you making that move instead of being arbitrary. I will try out the concept of placing a reverb on room mics and use the Abbey Roads settings 😊

Nice to see the “cymbal on the floor” trick. Ages ago now, I worked on a Membranes album with Steve Albini, and he did something kind of similar by micing up some bits of scrap metal placed in front of a guitar amp in our live room (actually just a cellar underneath the studio proper).

To avoid weird phase problems, i prefer recording OH with 2 omnidirectional Bruel&Kjaer 4006 (and a supporting AKG 414 TL in the middle), and top snare with super cardioid Sennheiser 441. The bottom mic is a omnidirectional Bruel&Kjaer 4007, whis is not phase reversed since it is quite far away from the snares, also picking up some HiHat and bass drum depending on the EQ setting. And for a fat room sound, i got two old Neumann Gefell Tube Omnidirectionals in a distance of maybe 2,5 meters that boost the cymbal richness and also Bass drum ambience (if needed). I often also use those ambience channels als a feed for additional reverb, instead of using the Aux on every single drum. Btw, i tried the cardioid SE Electronics SE8 Stereo Set for OH and they are great, but after a while i came back to my B&K 4006. No i use them for my two Hihats, which seems to be a good decision cos they sound very smooth and there are no phasing or leaking probs. You can clearly hear a difference to other cheap small condenser mics. Those chinese SE8 seem to be a real usable substitute for the very much seeked after Neuman KM84. Also very nice on recording acoustic guitars if you want a smooth and realistic, warm sound.

i just split each tom into high and low end, and then gate the hell out of just the high end with a super fast response like a clicky kick drum. it lets you keep the ring of the tom in while keeping your gate very harsh.

Hi Warren, I love the "boost and cut" eq trick, thanks a lot. These days I'm trying to teach myself mixing with (almost) just a channel strip emulation and with this kind of eqing works great. I've tried it also on other instruments and it sounds good to me. I think that the concept of boosting fondamentals and then highpassing is extensible to other sounds. Do you do a similar thing on other instruments or vocals?

I am a drummer. I mix by audiance perspective. But! I am left handed!
By the way, I always hated a 112 on bass drum. I liked an ATM25 way more. These days, 2022, I like an e602. I use e902s on low toms. 16 and 18". I find I don't need eq with these mics. If I do, it is subtractive. If I add eq, it is for color. The 602 is punchy and has more than enough lowend. Also has plenty of top.
