  • Hey Legends!
    I've put together a full Mix tutorial of an Indie Rock song!
    if you want to mix along with me, you can also purchase a copy of the session multitracks here:
    spinlightstudio.com/product/m...
    You can also purchase my drum samples here too:
    spinlightstudio.com/shop/
    This is a great way to help support the channel and all the time that goes into making these videos! Thank you in advance!
    I chose this particular project as it was one of the very first band recordings I ever did, and it has some common amateur recording mistakes, like phase issues, which I will show you how to fix in the prep stage of this mixing tutorial.
    Its a long video, and it took a long time to edit this together, but mixing a song usually takes time, a lot longer than my cut down edited version here! hopefully this gives you some insight into my thought processing while in the mixing zone.
    Please consider purchasing the multitracks or sending a thanks to help support the channel :)

    There is always so much talk about ‘sound’ but the ‘admin’ side of file and track management is so good to see in detail. Once you have that, THEN you can spend time training your ears and being able to find what you need to adjust. Stella.

    Amazing. You're wonderful. Great pleasure to watch this. Your moves are a little fast for me sometimes, but everything seems so evident... I wish I had your ears.... I'd like to listen to the rough mix and the final mix at the same level for comparision. Thanks a lot!

  • @dagovevareberg
    @dagovevareberg 9 місяців тому +7

    Wow, this was very inspiring! You’re so fast and - and at the same time are able to speak your thoughts along the way. Really like how you’re able to keep the levels in check so you’re not hyping up the mix louder and louder, but actually work on the different sounds to make them slightly better with EQ and compression and sometimes saturation. My biggest takeaway is that you seem to go a lot by instinct, of course based on a lot of practice and knowledge- but you don’t use 30 min on a kick drum, you move fast and then you keep the momentum and probably also the overview?! Please do a similar mixing video on a country song, perhaps with Saralyn, “Last Goodbye” - or just make a mini course with the multitracks - I’ll definitely pay for that, and I reckon others will too! Keep up the great work, really digging your channel! Thanks again, man.

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  9 місяців тому +4

      Thanks so much mate! It’s actually difficult to mix and explain what you are doing as you’re right, a lot of it is instinct and once I find what I like I move on, much trickier voicing my reasonings haha. It’s so important to not just make things louder while mixing, loudness fools us into thinking something is better when maybe it’s not. I definitely have some plans to make more full mix videos, just looking for a good window of opportunity between my normal studio hours - they take a long time to make! Appreciate your comment mate and thanks for watching :)

      @dagovevareberg 9 місяців тому +1

      @@spinlightstudios Yes, I reckon the videos take long time to make! It would also be great to have some videos about production “hacks”/ideas etc. I really liked the section where you analyzed the song and felt something were missing and you threw in a reverse cymbal etc to get the transitions to work better. Small things like this is golden, so yeah looking forward to your next video, have a great day 👍😄

      It’s so easy to chase your tail! Usually I find it’s best to get an initial mix, listen to it somewhere else a maybe in your car, headphones etc a day later and you’ll be able to write a list of things you want to adjust, then just do those things - don’t open the session and start fiddling around, just make those changes :) otherwise you just end up tweaking forever haha

    How does phase come into play when working with double tracked instruments? I recorded the same guitar part multiple times and picked two to double track. When I zoom in on the waveform the peaks and troughs are all over the place like there are phase issues, but nudging doesn't work because fixing things at one point seems to mess things up more down the line. At what point is it phase and at what point is it just the subtle difference between a performance? I don't think I moved the mic while recording but it's feasible I could have done it a little bit by accident.

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  3 місяці тому

      Double tracking will have a chorus/phase effect when you play the two tracks over the top of each other. That’s why you might have one a little quieter - or pan them away from each other to create seperate on and width. Those differences are what helps create a wide sound.

    On the drums it looks like you’re expanding button is on why do you use expansion rather than the normal? Using the blue compressor on the drum buss the mix looks 5% is that audible?

      Expander sounds smoother to me than hard gating. The blue 1176 with a low mix % is still adding some sustain, particularly I find it helps bring the cymbals out a little more.

    Great video thanks! Noob question , must have missed something, in your setup what is the purpose of sending all the track stacks to a mixbus and then to the stereo out? Why not just the stereo out? Thanks!

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  5 місяців тому

      It’s useful if you use a mix reference in your DAW. So I might drop a track in to A/B against while mixing, the reference can go straight to the stereo out and won’t be affected by any mix bus processing :)

    Re-watching this great video and wonder if you could explain why you time align the OH’s to the snare? Wouldn’t that in reality mean lowering the mics at the same distance as the snare mic, which is very close to the snare? In short: Your drums will sound tighter because the OH are in phase with the snare, but don’t you loose the depth of the OH’s? Curious!

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  8 місяців тому +1

      It’s just about phase alignment, if the drums are out of phase, they sound thin and weak. You can also just flip the phase on the overheads to see if it sounds better, but by actually aligning the audio it assures the snare close mics and the overheads are in time with each other (I do this for all close mics in relation with the OHs) and have less phase issues. I don’t usually move my room mics as I like to keep the distance to create the space and delay between when the drums are hit and reach the microphone. I have a video on phase alignment with drums if you want to dig back through them :)

    I watched this from beginning to end. And wow. I’m brand new to home recording and have a long road ahead. I got lost right at the beginning when he said needed to drag the tracks in. So do you not do the mix inside the project file you tracked in? Let’s say I have a file and I just have guitar, vocal, bass and keys and track my song. Wouldn’t I do the mix inside the same project? Again I’m new to all this and lost right out of the gate with the dragging the tracks into a new file/project. Thanks.

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching mate. You only need to drag files into a new session if you’ve been sent tracks for mixing :) if you have a project you’ve been recording in, you can definitely just mix within that!

    Great video! I enjoyed watching your process. However, I think the point was entirely missed at the end because you didn't level match the rough and finished mixes. Just about anything is going to sound more exciting with a jump in volume that vast!

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. I think in some cases the loudness is also part of the difference, and while I do make a point to level match a lot of my comparisons, sometimes it’s helps show the full result as the added loudness is all part of the process. Thanks for watching!
