Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold-standard evidence-based therapy for mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse problems, and borderline personality disorder, among others. It differs from talk therapy and counseling in the following: 1) clients and therapists work together to understand and address the clients' mental health problems and develop a treatment plan (collaborative empiricism), 2) therapists teach clients to think differently about difficult emotions and situations (cognitive flexibility), 3) therapists help clients face situations that produce anxiety or other uncomfortable emotions (for example, exposure exercises), and 4) therapists assign homework so that clients can bring the learnings from therapy to their real life. CBT has earned its status as gold-standard evidence-based therapy because of 40+ years of research supporting its effectiveness.

Could you do a video on a what a CBT session looks like (brief to fit a short distractible attention span would be helpful) ?

Why must we simplify? Wish our profession wasn’t so so broken into camps. We all have something to offer to one another. Psychotherapists do not, as a rule, give advice, but rather work to activate clients own ability to discover what helps them. To learn. One size never fits all. All therapy utilizes aspects of CBT but within the context of knowing and allowing them to experience the felt sense of what is happening within and without them. No blame, just sensing, opening eyes to awareness of how the past shows up today. Ignoring what it felt like to grow up in their atmosphere continues neglect of that child who then remains stuck. Benefit of psychotherapy is in being with clients, finding paths that allow them, themselves to respect, not blame, the challenges that are theirs. It is the art of making this life worth living with great respect for what that takes. Not evidence based. Only wats to measure these is in the lab. Not in life as we live it.
