Mudlarking the River Thames - Finding the Treasures left behind by people long ago (May 2021)

  • Forgotten people from long ago left evidence of their existence in the dark waters of the River Thames. At low tide some of it washes up for us to find when we are out mudlarking. Join me down on the Thames foreshore as I search for lost, forgotten and discarded objects and then let your imagination run wild as you imagine who once owned it, smoked it, lost it and what were their lives like!? When we find lost objects on the Thames foreshore, it is really like touching history and these objects are a link to the past. Whilst researching the items that we find, we learn things that we didn't even know that we needed to learn! In today's video I find a special pipe bowl that conjured up images of pirates, but the reality of who smoked it is very different! Maybe you can help me to identify the coin I found too!
If you are tempted to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details here:-
    www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tha...
The following organisations are really helpful when it comes to identifying clay pipes-
    scpr.co/
    www.pipearchive.co.uk/
If you would like to treat me to a cup of tea, then thank you very much! You can do so here at my kofi account:-
    ko-fi.com/nicolawhitetidelineart
Thank you for watching everyone. and if you would like to see more of my finds then you can follow me on instagram and twitter @tidelineart.
Im even on tiktok now too thanks to my daughter and you can find me at tidelineartmudlark
Thank you. Take care. Be happy and be kind to youreselves and others.
    Love Nicola

    That river.
    In that city.
    YOUR city!
Ancient place, inhabited since time immemorial, has begrudgingly accepted the refuse of countless generations.
Thanks to you, that river gives back, in the form of tiny wonders.
    Treasures!
And, you share them with all of us.
    Thank you!

It's also wonderful to see a beautiful person getting mud under her fingernails without freaking out. From a mountain top in North Carolina, I love the way she takes me to the Thames for a day out in London because of her I hope to visit there someday. Be well, be safe, Peace.

I did a bit of my own research into that pottery find on the Internet - I actually paused the video, opened a new browser window, and pitched right in - and got several hits, all concerning Sunderland ship jugs. (Particular ceramic pitchers with a proprietary attractive glaze, all made in Sunderland, and bearing the illustration of a sailing vessel.)
The verse on each was: ‘This world is a good one to live in/To lend, to spend, to buy, or give in/But to beg, borrow, or get a mans own/It is such a world as never was known’. Which I took to mean "this is a good world". On reflection, I believe your friend's interpretation is probably the accurate one, though.
Thanks for another great outing! The 17th Lancers bit was brilliant!

Greetings from sunny South Africa Nicola. My partner and I are very fond of your Mudlarking channel, when we see a new video the excitement builds:) We went "sea larking" this past weekend but sadly the tide got the better of us and it was on the high. Thank you for these inspirational videos

    Hiya Nicola,
Another great video, thank you. I liked the pirate idea more than the lancers, but such is life. I thought you looked very lovely, clean fingernails et al, you do scrub up well! Loved the baby birds with their mums'. You have a fantastic ability to find what to us is hidden, very envious, but as I'm binge-watching I am seeing more, when you tell us where to look that is.
    Stay safe, Steve...

Happy Mother's Day, Nicola! The skull pipe is an amazing find and at first I thought it might be a type of memento mori. But I'm glad you researched because the true history is just as exciting. :-)

A wonderful video Nicola, thank you. I especially liked the piece of chain mail and skull and crossbones pipe! This has been comforting to watch, we lost our beloved dog Archie last week which was utterly heartbreaking. He was such a beautiful soul. Mudlarking is going to be one of the things I throw myself into now to keep busy and to heal. Sending much love and best wishes to you xx

Thank you for sharing this interesting day of finds! I really liked the skull and crossbones pipe and, as a long-time viewer, I think that may be my favorite one of all! Good job, Nicola, you must certainly have been a pirate in a previous life. Now, about those fish teeth! What? Ewww! I hope you washed your hands! LOL! Happy Mother's Day Nicola!

Lovely finds , Me and my daughter found two of the skull and crossbones pipe bowls in a river site near Manchester city centre (strangely) amongst many other pipe bowls back in about 2005 , we probably found about 80-100 over the couple of years we lived in that area most of them were Pollocks pipe maker pipes . I think we were the only people in the area who knew about the site. we used to find loads of the old bottle stoppers too a lot have war grade on them.

Fantastic as always. So happy you found some of your favorite things and a first time chainmail. Everything about this bid was fun and I of course love the birds. They're so peaceful even fighting over and dead eel. Lolol

Your funds today were fantastic! The pipe, chain mail, and onion bottle neck graze so much history! And while I LOVE those items, the Toulouse Geese and their babies grabbed my heart. Two females showed up at our home in far Northern California and have made their own home here for two years now. Thanks for your love and care of the feathery finds, as well! ❤️
