Alright finally I tried it out! And yeah, this is a contender for sure!
Neural Amp Modeler next, pleag!
impressive for that price compared to way more expensive units. Are the sounds better then lets say in unite from Line6 or so?
do the NAM
please
Ola, do this viseo again and put the guitar in a full mix. The difference is almost impossible to hear. Glenn Fricker just did a vid showing this. The price difference makes it an even biggr competitor. Cheers. 🍻
That mid tone on the first capture was pure metal bliss. For me, capturing just the right mid tone is always the hardest part of getting a good distortion sound.
Matt Pike does an excellent job of this in High on Fire.
Tbh when you switched to the real amp I couldn't hear a difference lol.
I couldn't hear any difference either....if there was a difference it is very subtle.
I love my ToneX pedal! There’s something to be said about simplicity. I just drop in the other effects I need into my UAD Apollo. I was going to save up for the Quad Cortex, then this came out. It was a no brainer.
6:14 the gate....perfect
I made that Ola Starzinger Preset! I used your video and just matched up the gear and knob settings. My badlander has 6L6s in it so hopefully that's what yours had as well at the time.
I love the honest and genuine review, a review I can trust!
lol
awesome review!
I would love to see a desk setup video
Finally a video about the AmpliTube Tonex that starts by explaining how all the Tonex and AmpliTube stuff is working together... I shouldn't have wasted my time on the other video's I watched earlier and should've just waited for yours. Thanks Ola
I’m waiting for a TONEX rack unit to compete with Kemper etc. that’s what they need to compete in the professional touring segment imo. I love my Kemper with the foot controller and add on mission expression pedals but to each their own.
When I had a Kemper I found it too much to dial in pedal sounds. I was really only using it for the amps anyway. I'm excited to use my pedals for effects and be able to fit this on my pedal board too!
It sounds really close with headphones. The response you feel while playing would definitely matter. But then it’s not a bad deal for the price especially compared. Would love to get a neural pedal.
There is general agreement in the guitar community that ToneX pickups sound more faithful than Quad and Kemper. I believe this is real. Because in ToneX we have new algorithms and AI.
Null tests prove it also.
@@rossbalch Can you indicate some video?
@@daviguitar2000 try searching for Leo Gibson's comparison between Quad Cortex, Kemper, ToneX and NAM plugin
@@marinbegovic8500it's the most underrated channel on UA-cam
From the Null tests I saw that the ToneX came in third in the comparison tests. Second was the Quad Cortex but everything was left in the dust to the mighty, mighty NAM.
Glad to be back was busy for a while, I had a chance to try a solar guitar used I love the right arm cutout man there’s nothing like grabbing a guitar again after a break 👍
interesting thing here, for me, that in the future, you will be able find new presets. if new models keep option to "save as" for this model, that would be great
I love the Tonex pedal and Amplitube 5 that comes with it and Tonex software. I don't miss my pedalboard at all !
Sick tones 🤘🤘
8:16 Tonex is objectively more accurate in its captures than Kemper, and by a fair margin. Not sure what you based your opinion on, but if you're getting a worse result with Tonex than you are with the Kemper, then something may be off in your capturing setup for Tonex.
more accurate versus sounding better....two different things... Also, when liquid profiling comes out, the Kemper will be ahead of all of the competitors (feature-wise)..They also have cab-in the room (not just mic'ed cab) simulations with the Kemper Kone...which is amazing.
your t-shirt is spot on Ola! awesome demo as always
Sounds GREAT. I think most of us will never own a Friedman or whatever super awesome amp, and in that case we'll get freaking AWESOME sound at home for a good price (compared to the competition).
I bought this to use other people's captures. For someone who just plays at home this is a game changer. I wanted something I could also use with an amp and headphones when it's too late for the amp.
I've owned the Quad Cortex and Fractal stuff, but from UA-cam demos alone the Tonex captures seem to have the best sound quality of them all. I travel 6 months out of the year and the thought of taking my expensive studio rig on the road with me is just unreal. I'll be purchasing it in the next week to try out once I get back. I'm also using the Apogee Ensemble like Ola here, which even though it's been discontinued for awhile still has to be the number 1 guitar centric interface out there. I hope they come out with a MkII soon!
I have two Kempers at home, a powered rack version one in a flight case which I use for live, and a toaster which sits on my desk. I think Tonex might become my new DI / studio box, freeing up some desk space and I'll probs keep my Kemper for live performances.
Thank you Ola I needed this
These new modeling pedals are budget-friendly and sound amazing!
I'd been holding out on a Quad Cortex for years because of the insane price. I just bought a ToneX last week and can't wait for it to arrive!
Rumor has it, running an L6 Helix Stomp with the ToneX in the fx loop is superb, so I may even explore that route after a while!
Can confirm
ToneX + HX stomp is the bee's knee's. With HX Command center and MIDI you can effectively have each snapshot be an amp channel. Love my setup.
I have this setup and it's a blast!
I have a Tonex on order and that's how I plan on running it.
Wouldn't it be better to just run the HX at that point though? No one in the audience can tell which sounds more "real" so you save yourself the expense and possible complication.
I picked one up primarily to prevent having to lug a heavy ass amp head and cab around for something simple like a band practice. Tone-x really helps cutting down on the heavy load but still sounds incredible.
What are you using to monitor it? Or do you guys have a PA at practice?
@@AMusicalPsychosis There's a 600 watt PA.
I paid $199 (used) at Guitar Center-love it!
But no Tonex max or AmpliTube 5 came with it right? I bought a used on from GC and IKM told me GC shouldn’t be selling it used. It was such a hassle I returned it and bought a new one.
@@mvenuti1980 I think mine was a floor demo--came with original box and papers! I was not expecting anything but the pedal.
dude. I love how I can find your reviews on all the things I want to buy, before I leave my job at Guitar C... :)
sounds great!
Others have done Null tests comparing Neural, Kemper and Tonex and the Tonex has had best match to original amp. Null test: Record original and capture and reverse polarity on one to see if they completely cancel each other out.
need to try this
It would be perfect with send/return. I'm waiting for the V2
Why does it need a send return? It's not like a real amp where a speaker out can blow up your pedals. Anything you would put in a loop can just go after this? Post cab is the preferred method in the studio and the loop is essentially a compromise in live situations.
The tone is stored in the balls
And when you handle them, it sticks in the fingers 😂😂
and your cats!
You misspeled TOAN
Many videos state that this device sounds better than the kemper and the quad cortex. I have ordered it and test it myself. I have heard a video where you definitely hear no difference compared to the original. Probably you have to choose the best capture method. But the play feeling might still be different.
Listen to your comparison I can hear that the capture lacks a tiny bit deepness (bass). But in the studio you can easily adjust it.
That noise gate did a good job.
it's probably worth a mention that it has an effects loop too to add modulation pedals and such
great video Ola. i honestly couldn´t hear the difference between your capture and your real amp and cab. awsome capture you made❤🤘. i cant say the same for the kemper, ore even quad cortex.. i never heard a comparison with those, to the real amp, where the capture didnt sound noticeably different.
LAVATE LOS OIDOS HERMANO.
I litterally would buy this for your Freidman Capture. That is THE sound its OldNuSkool. Its perfect
Thank you 🙏
Hell yeah 🤘
Can you capture axfx and kemper captures ? Also if it doesnt do effects, capture amps models with effects added ?
Can you capture archtype petrucci with it?
I’ve been drying too get my hands on one of these.
Would like to hear the JJ capture back into the Mesa cab and compare with the real head.
I'm interested to know how this would be used in a gigging / live setup (say, a smallish venue with just a mixing desk and PA). Would you go straight from the Tonex to the mixing desk? What would you use for a monitor on the stage? If you used a guitar amp on stage after the Tonex, you would get an amp sim + real amp, not sure would that would sound like.
i would do what the lightning bolt bassist does and just get a power amplifier that has more than enough power/headroom to cover your cabinet you want to use
I replaced my REAL tube amp, Fractal Axe-Fx III, Kemper, and Atomic Amplifire for The TONEX pedal and let me tell ya i have zero regrets. I couldn’t be more happier! A.I. is here let’s embrace it !❤🤝 🤙🏼 💪
@@TheBoss0Timewhat’s to regret? Not like you can’t go buy them again somewhere
Great shirt 🤘
8:49 9:06 sounds good but see how its missing that cab big amp feel sound !
Great for bass players, as they don’t generally pack on the effects! Would be interested to see how a bass sounds through it.
It works great for bass. I have a capture of my 300 lb all tube bass rig that I use all the time. It's pretty awesome.
@@joeMW284hello I would love to try your capture. What is it called?
@@giosundance5643 search "Chicago Post Punk bass"
What I have used is the power cabinet but what good ia u alwaya have a tone for any band any situation
According to the bull tests I’ve seen the tone X does capturing better than any other profiler right now
Ola is your Amp models free? would love to try the JJ friedman capture and the mesa boogie badlander.
In a live situation, let me tell you, these things slap. The biggest advantage is the guitar isn't going to bleed into the other mics on stage as easily, so the sound is much easier to control, especially in a small room. That makes the guitar way more punchy because you're not getting any weird phasing, especially if the band are using IEMs.
I think this thing + the Eventide HS90 will be the new go-to option for a really complete compact pedalboard.
This is what I use live.
How would this benefit a person who already owns the Amplitube 5 MAX software and the AXE I/O to studio monitors?
3:35 Uh, yeah... except that Quad Cortex still does not have a PC editor available to the public. Only how many years since its release?
I really wish there was a mobile app for backing up, transferring/loading and saving tones to the cloud.
I'm thinking about buying Tonex or Ampero II Stomp. The only thing that concerns me about Tonex is that it doesn't have fx loop. Do you think is it important? Or can I just connect my reverb and delay to the input of the Tonex and it will be good?
I just loved this guitar... awesome!!!
After doing a strait A/B with Tonex and Kemper, there is absolutely no doubt that the Kemper is second best now, the main things to note are the replication of tone is far more accurate with the Tonex, the algorithms are superior in every way, including the feel (sag) and such seems to be there in a much more organic way. Post capture, the Kemper seems to also implement that digital sizzle, and had to be further manipulated to get closer to its orginal capture.
Ola's thoughts on Tonex Vs Kemper etc are his own, however the proof is even when he A/B his own capture and rig, on my Focals, there werent any differences in tone, so i would have to say hes missing the speaker cab response more than anything.
I'll wait for the Tonex II that will hopefully have an effects section or at least have an external effects loop.
Why does it need an FX loop?
Wouldn't you just put your Reverbs/Delays after this pedal?
@@josuastangl7140 It doesn’t NEED it and it sounds great without it. Some folks don’t like their delays, reverbs and modulation effects with distortion in them. Hence, the Effects loop.
@@josuastangl7140 typically you want to run time based effects through an effects loop, and everything else into the front of the amp.
@@guitaristforfunn I know, because you want to run them after the distortion in the signal chain.
So why not just put in after the Tonex in your chain?
@@markjohnson1020 FX post cabinet = FX in the loop
Check out the Radial Bigshot if you haven't already. It's an A/B pedal. You can blend two amps together or switch between two amps without having to unplug cables. Also has ISO, ground lift and 180 phase flip which can be handy if venue power is making your amp buzz.
I'm not too familiar with the physical setup of these devices; Is this meant to go straight to a cabinet, bypassing the need for a head?
Video idé. Gör en capture av samma ENGL preamp du kör live med och testa vilken av alternativen du föredrar att köra live med eller om det är så pass likt att du kan ta den billigare på turné.
Metal gear, solid!
Good one
. o O (❗)
Great tones..I don't have anything except real amps never spent the money on anything but amp..cab..pedals..guitar...I wonder how good it would sound with all my Zakk Wylde pedals...because I love my chorus especially...4 cable method of course and od in front with gate
This gear is good but your tone is always great! Rock n Rooooooooooooooooll
When are these natural finish guitars getting on Thomann? Not that I could afford one
I cant wait for a Solar X Type in that Natural finish.
how would i go about learning about guitar gear like this? i have no idea what he said this whole video but i want to learn
Imagine you have to take a sip of your beer every time Ola says capture 😁🍺
Good enough for me .
I wonder what latency is like on the computer. When I use plugins I just can't quite get the feel tight enough. Maybe something like this would solve that.
Watched a video where a gear nerd did the math, 2.9-3.2 ms depending on amp.
This could be useful to me.
I've always used real amps and pedals, so if this can capture one of my amps (either my Laney IRT or Marshall JVM, depending on what I'm doing) then I could use the same pedals in the FX loop - exactly as before.
I do still love my amps but gigging with them can damage the tubes - especially at festivals where changeover times are ridiculously short...
This could be a great solution or backup!
Thanks Ola!! 🤘😎🙏
They completely missed putting an FX loop on the Tone-X..
It sounds beautiful... cannot tell any difference, of course, I'm just a regular metal guy, not a studio geek who can actually tell the micro differences
Does the plugin sound as good as the pedal ?
Can you choose one "capture" that you made as a preset and just plug yourself into a cabinet, so you can play it during live shows?
Hey, I tried your tone Olas JJ Jr, only with tonex, I dont add anything, as you do on the video and dont sound anything close to your video, I connected Guitar > tonex and regular but good computer speakers or headphones. ...? any idea. Maybe my mics on the guitar? whats your Imput trim ? maybe other tweak on the tonex. please advice
Thanks man!!!
Nice Ola says what it is ;)
So this is essentially a preamp? I'm really tempted to get this to pair up with my Seymour Duncan PS200 and Vader 2x12.
🤘🤘
Can you have a full preset all one patch. Clean, distortion ,lead ?
Really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about this, cool video
Do your Century bro 🤘
im worried I cant crate or find IR's I like. Are there many in the software to start with? Im not a huge IT Guy...thanks.
I think that this unit will be more than enough for a lot of people, especially for those that have some favourite pedals that they (still) like to use. I think you said it very nicely, this is more of a pedalboard unit which you can expand on with your own pedals. Having quite a few years of experience with Kemper units and having sold quite a few, my experience with my customers is that most use the Kemper as an amp, very few actually profile them. So, it would be cool if Kemper made their own stompbox style unit the people can use just for that. It would have been nice if the ToneX had an FX loop, I can't imagine that this would increase the price that much, or would it? I'm in the process of building myself a recording rig again, I'll probably give thie ToneX a spin too, for that price it's very hard to beat imho. And, yes, I need a Badlander in my life. Come on, Mesa, ship those bad boys to the EU alright...
What use would an fx loop be? The ToneX pedal has no poweramp section to kill your pedals. You can put any fx you want after this pedal.
Im salivating more about the Guitar LOL.. I need a Solar Guitar and a Rhoads like that.. No paint in body and headstock, just natural tone
So lost with all these new "hook to my Pc"type pedals i think im too old to start now or maybe its easier than im picturing but kinda dont get what it actually does.I know it captures various amp modeling etc to emulate an old tube amp or whatever tone i wanted but dumb question here, does it have its own effects too without the need of a PC? I literally just saw it in my feed and naturally have a few questions
I liked how honest you were Ola! Some UA-camrs are even claiming that the tonex is going to replace amps which I highly doubt it’ll ever happen.
It´s all about the quality of the captures! If the capture doesn´t sound good, than the Tonex-pedal sucks as well! Unfortunately most of the tone-net captures aren´t usable, at least for me! It´s very important to adjust the input-gain of the pedal to the right level! If the level is too low, or too high, it destroys the capture!
can I just use this with cabinet behind me for live and to get rid of my guitar head, or this is only goes with speaker and inear? I don't want to play without cabinet...
🤘😈🤘🔥🔥🔥
Blind tests, please!!! That's the only way to be able to say that!!
Do you like the Tonex better than Headrush? Actually will this work with my Headrush?
It will get even more less expensive as competitors develop this technology, not bad though for the price. 😝✌
It will get even less*
more less? what?
Waiting for that to happen. @$399, it isn't impulse buy priced yet :)
@@StephGV2 It would be cool to have a Amp like Line Six or something that could upload not just captures but plug-ins like Neural Plug-ins etc to play not just on a computer but through a cabinet to get the Plug-In Sound in non-computer like situations like just playing live :) Would be awesome people would be able to afford a great sound but in live situations. Who knows though what they will have in the future, lol.
I love my TONEX! Sick Video Ola!
the thing about axe fx, kemper, quad cortex is not many folks need all that crap, they just want something like this and they are ready to party.
Also, 400 bux so if beer gets spilled on it you aren't going to freak out as much
Insult to Axe Fx
What speakers do you use?
alright, im on the fence about buying an Axe-FX II XL+ but then I see this for wayyyyy cheaper. Is the axe even worth buying at this point?
Depends if you want the FX. If you don't, chances are the ToneX pedal is a way better option.
