I just bought the TONEX pedal a few months ago ... after playing with the computer based version of the software. The pedal will make playing under the typical constraints on stage these days much more practical. In the studio, it will still be my tube amps ... why use an imitation of the real thing when you can have the original. Very satisfied so far with TONEX.
I was looking at this pedal, the NUX Amp Academy, an HX Stomp, the Humboldt Simplifier, and a few other options. I finally decided on the cheapest option available - the Joyo Preamp House R-15. No programming, no micro/sub menus, no edit software, no delay or reverb, just the pedal, with 9 amps (a clean and a dirty option for each). Just turn the knobs and save one clean and one dirt preset. That's it. Plain and simple. Oh, it does have an FX loop. And sounds great.
I've been very happy with the ToneX and combined with an H90 it's been my choice for low volume home practice and recording. I think some of the software UI will improve over time and I think they intended the workflow to be that you would solely use the software to play and tweak your presets and then transfer them over to the unit. I think it would make a lot of sense for IK to add some kind of social media style upvoting and commenting to the amp captures. Also the ability to tip someone for a cool capture would be nice. Also, I've found it helpful to name all of my captures starting with my initials. So for example, "TF DRRI Clean" This way when I search the library for "TF" all of my captures come up.

Absolutely agree with the desperate need for lo-cut and hi-cut! It needs to be implemented into all the cab modes, including a full amp+cab capture. Honestly blows my mind they left this out. I can understand from the point of view that Tonex was only computer software first, in DAW slapping lo-pass and hi-pass ain't such big deal, but a live pedal format for gigging... Can't believe they don't have it. Way to cripple your own device
I got one to complement my axe fx 3, and to have decent amp sounds when gigging again (I recently started after years of inactivity). Paired with the h90 it sounds great, ut it's so painful that to set either the tonex or the h90 I need a computer. I have been waiting for ages for a mobile app for the h90, and for the tonex it would be amazi g to be able to load captures and IR's from my tablet or mobile. But the feature I would beg the most for is a tuner in the tonex. It has the dsp power and the display capability and would be super easy to implement. I wonder why they haven't done it. Thanks Leon for another great review!
Tonex is a game changer in size format and amp sounds ratio. But the good ends there. They have a ton of work to do in terms of usability. That being said, I have in on my main rig with a Helix Stomp XL. Ridiculous combo. Excited to see Tonex hopefully make continued improvements.
Your criticisms are spot on, I hope IK take note and do something with that clunky software. It's a great little device though, I think your right that it may well become a classic.
These are great. But there are so many thousands of IR's out now that I don't know how necessary any more capture hardware is anymore. I get Option paralysis anytime I think beyond 5 cab manufacturers with 6 cab configuration and 10 different speaker options, 8 different mics in 7 different positions. That's already way more than I need. Anything else can be done with compression EQ. I'm just straight maxed.
Great review! I’ve had HX Stomp, Headrush etc but Tonex gives me the right sound, feel and dynamics with monitors for the first time. I don’t have use for a big pedalboard so for me: no negatives at all. I love it! Only wish there was a built in delay as well.
I'm still playing with the IR's you gave us👍🙏 so I don't pretend I know how this capture revolution all works....but it sure is interesting... watching the technology quite rapidly become affordable and more accessible. Sounds bloody awesome to me!
How does ToneX stand up going straight into a cab. I wish more people would make videos that do not require speaker sims. I love my cab and the sounds it poduces, but will these things be any good through it?
Agreed on the meaningful hierarchy and organization of profiles. I've already started doing it manually with NAM profiles and I know who the top capture makers are so far. The second a company makes a working capture player with stereo inputs/outputs and dual amp capability, the future of mono guitar rigs will begin to move further into the distance.
FX loop not needed. You don't need to have your effects after the power amp but before the speaker cab, after the cab is fine and traditionally where time based effects were added for recording the music you've loved all your life.
Unbelievable, Im going to purchase it, aswell the captures of JP2C man that thing is going to give me full joy. I love to do dream theater stuff, the harmonics and that articulate sound.
I'm pretty sure the weird captures were dropouts in the capture process, i was told to try increasing your buffer if it happens during the capture process
Thanks ever so much for the captures, must have been time consuming. Your critique is spot on but I still love the sound and the fact that you can strap it on your board and enjoy a wealth of amps and run with it. Cheers
That ADA sounds so great. Might be because I grew up in the 80's but that is just the ultimate tone for that era of hard rock and metal. Of course I downloaded it right away.
I’m bit confused on usage. Is this a a good pedalboard option. That is. Dirt in front with delay snd chorus etc after direct into an audio interface or foh board? As usual. Excellent content.
This is the first video i see showing bigger flaws and getting deep into things. I hope the filter bubble in favor ok ik multimedia, i was stucking the last months in, will disapear over time... Thanks dude
What is the learning curve like for these new units? I'm a fairly simple player . I always focused on my playing rather than effects because the guitar is so hard to Master.
Personal opinion: FM3 sounds better as the “amp”. Only reason I’d consider toneX with the FM3 is if I needed all of the fractal cpu for effects and none left for an amp/cab block
My complains about this product are the same as yours. No Fx Loop (if I add a delay after the output I'll not hear it in headphones), no stereo input, strange stereo output, difficult to use (there are two volumes)... It's a pity because it sounds very good
the bug sounds like the sampling has clipped (overload/saturation) on the specific notes ? digital clipping can produce silence (flat oscillation at max level = no sound) , that's why I think it could be due to clipping...
Very cool device, have a friend that has one and loves it, but I couldn't agree more about editing at the component level. I love the idea of profiles/captures on paper, but I'd pull my hair out coming from an AxeFXIII. I don't need 200 different amps, but I need to be able to pick the one I want and start from scratch.
The other issue with capture is the static nature of them. Often captures won't need tweaking because the whole point is they're a great sound right out of the box for the really good ones. But everybody is diffferent. I think Leo Gibson did the math if you want to capture every setting on even a simple amp like friedman pink taco it'd take 30,000 plus captures and over 400 days of amp training. Alternatively, it might be possible to capture the each knob range? Like run the bleep bloops through and it prompts you to turn Bass knob full range back and forth, then prompts you to do gain knob etc.
Great review, thanks so much. I think a mic preamp XLR input with phantom power would be good then its your interface too. Software looks clunky but so is a lot of amp sim software. NI's Guitar Rig is horrid too. The Deluxe Reverb capture you did sounds aces. Should Plague Scythe get a link?
I've been getting some great sounds with the Tonex VST, but the software is clunky as hell, and the pedal is not ready for the big time. But the platform could be great if users with sick amp collections fill it with great captures.
Exactly my thoughts, re: the criticisms of this thing. I had it for a few weeks and struggled to resolve a long list of issues. After most of them were answered, i was still left with one or two glitchy problems, but the most frustrating was that the app did not operate as an editor for the pedal. I would have kept the ToneX pedal had there been even basic integration between the app and the hardware. But, i returned it and i'll stay with my Kemper for a while longer. The ToneX sounds great, though.... Maybe i'll revisit it in a year, if the UI has been evolved, but as it stands, it's a ridiculous mishmash of two many independent elements, with illogical layouts and integration. If you're the kind of person who just wants to play the pedal out of the box, or maybe just load in a handful of profiles and then not rely on the app again, it's probably a great device. But, i am used to the Kemper and having constant interfacing between the editor and the device. in fact, i never even touch the Kemper itself-all the manipulation is in Rig Manager. Which is simple to use and just makes sense-and this is after i used to think it was kludgy. But, in comparison to ToneX, Rig Manager is brilliant.
Yeah when cheap stuff like the NUX/Mooer modellers have full software editors it makes you wonder why 'industry leaders" can't get one done for launch.
Leon, thank you for sharing your captures for free. However...if one only has the PC version, we can not access them. Another channel, Tone Junkie, managed to make a capture of a "Purple Plexi" and through a link on his site I was able to import that capture. Is there any way you could look into that? Your captures...especially the ADA MP1 caught my attention since I had both the MP1 and MP2 back in the day. Thanks for at least considering this. Great job showing the pro's and con's of the unit.
I think the biggest problem with user captures is that most people don't know how to mic a cab, or don't always have the best environment for miking a cab. The vast majority of captures include the cab and they are usually cringy. Tonex allows you to "disable" the cab but it's using some sort of algorithm to remove it and it just does not work well.
Every time I watch videos on these new Tonex captures I think someone somewhere with lots of time and money has or will rent a proper studio out and spend months capturing as many amps and cabs as possible. If I were a guitarist, that's what I'd be doing, but I'm a drummer and have software like Superior Drummer that's already done it for me.
Thats exactly my experience with theTonex. Its like for one good capture there is 20 that are bad/mediocre. I think that paid capture packs is the way to go.
Yup, I've found some captures that make me absolutely love the ToneX more than anything else I've owned, but trawling through the user captures is definitely a lesson in just how many people have no idea how to record guitar, haha. I know tone is in the ear of the beholder and all that, but some of them sound like they recorded a transistor practice amp under a pile of blankets down the end of a hallway.
I wonder if it's possible to use TONE X as an external IR player? I mean, is there an option to turn all other blocks off on the pedal itself and just leave the several cabs to click through the show? And also, does it behave like a tube amp in terms of rolling back volume? Does it clean up well? I tried a few presets on the TONE X software and wasn't impressed exactly by that point. Other than that, the unit sounds awesome and seems to translate tones well!
So the Kemper rig manager has both a crowd rating system for rigs in the online rig exchange and you can also quickly audition them on your actual kemper by double clicking on the rig. So not sure why you lumped the Kemper in with the others?
I'm getting ready to purchase either this unit or the Boss GT1000 Core. So far I'm sold on the Boss unit because of the reviews and the reputation Boss has and especially the 32bit AD/DA. This unit is cheaper but you know what they say, you get what you pay for. I've seen some of the reviews this unit sounds great. Has great effects. The GT1000 competes with Fractal and Helix. Unless you can hear these units in person you can't really tell what's going to reach you. I'm going to try the Boss unit I can always return it. I don't think I'll be disappointed.
Hey Boss. Lace Sensors in the Strat at the end? What type are they and do they still have a bit of sterile sound or what? Thank You for the video/information and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
I recently quit my live impro band, going solo in reaper and all.. almost bought the tonex pedal but then came NAM.. and now things got more crazy, just ordered the i/o one thing 😛
Hm, about the ranking captures complain - Kemper gives you that 1 > 5 * rating option, plus marking a favorite captures. Not sure what you are missing here. 🙂
Pedals and the lot should be made with ergonomics first in mind. It may sound like a million but if you can't get your sounds sorted its of no use live.
I see more and more test videos that try to touch the ToneX pedal more critically and mostly overshoot the mark a bit with the benchmarks. As a few other comments here have already written, I will also wait with a purchase until the next version or the next development. The FX loop criticism is bullshit, but would make sense if the pedal still gets a power amp. And of course an XLR for the IR. And then it would be a 100% competitor for Kemper and QC. Sorry, but the profiling already beats the Kemper and the QC would have to be cut in half price wise to remain relevant then. What IK have done there is a game changer and if I worked at Kemper I would have many sleepless nights.
Metal preamp pedal shootout next? :) recently downsized from an or100 and orange 4x12 to a fender 59 bassman combo to save my poor ol’ back. The combo slays and I feel like a rabbit hole of preamp pedals is about to appear. Would love a video on that kinda thing. Revv 3, be-od, victory v1 kraken ect Nice videos you are an absolute gem of a resource and seem like a top bloke :)
I have one on the way and was just wondering. Can you save these captures to your PC and load them on to a hard drive as a backup for ones you like? Or is it only able to store them on the unit itself?
I have the app and planning to buy the pedal but after a while I think I don’t need one anymore. There are a lot of useable tones and my favorite are the dumble tones done by IK but there is a lot of other bad ones too. I’d rather go with something that offers 3 amps option with high quality sounds over something like tonex that has a lot of options but has too many trash captures and the Simplifier MKII or iridium interest me more.
Kemper doesn't have an FX loop either and with a complete pre-amp/power-amp capture/picture not really feasible. I suppose you could do it with 2 Tonex pedals by capturing a pre-amp on one and a power amp on the other and then insert your effects between them. Really only modelers not capture/profilers are going to be able to have an FX loop.
I'm not suggesting being able to place something between the pre/power amp like an fx loop on an amp, more a "stereo insert" that can be placed after the amp/cab and routed to the stereo outs or headphones
Seems they made one product, then the other and one is for PLAYING (the pedal) and one for playing OR cloning and they included a way to transfer a patch to the pedal. Seems you are complaining about a pretty minor thing. Wanting every change you make in the software to be realtime transferred to the pedal. ? meh.
At the end of the day I'll take something that sounds good with clunky software than the other way around ;) Every other modeller/profiler does syncs with the software though so I find it an odd design choice. PS love your videos! The Dio and Halford stuff is particularly impressive.
My main complaint is that I simply think it isn't as good as Neural DSP for ease of use or stereo width in my DAW. The Quad Cortex seems like an easier device to use too. Also, the effects are better from Neural DSP. Personally, I use the FM3 for real life stuff. The effects can't be beat and it sounds great. Mostly, it's not that expensive for something that does it all and is compact.
Quad Cortex is also 4 times the price, so if you only need a capture player this makes a lot of sense. For price/tone/size the FM3 is in a real sweet spot IMO which makes it one of my favourite pieces of gear ever.
You know I don’t want to have anything to do with capturing sound. I want to know how it functions as an amp with tons of sounds to lode in it. I’m done lugging around all these have tube amps.
I ended up getting the Tonex pedal about a week ago. I really like it. I am running it in the loop of the AxeFx 3. I like a lot of the captures! I still need to experiment with using the drive captures in front of a real amp (with the IR shut off) I think the thing I like the most is the Plate reverb…I really like that a lot for some reason. Glad you have some captures up!! Your Axefx patches have been great, I’m sure these captures will be great as well! Are you going to capture your Marshall JMP-1? I had one of those back in the day…kind of miss it. Haha
Every time I click on these videos, I always think someone is going to make some cool music with new tech. And it is always the same heavy rock, treble pickup, high gain, fizzy stuff. Over and over on millions of channels. Ola's channel alone proves that this type of sound can achieved now with nearly any amp. And you kind of tricked me because you said you had criticisms of this pedal - but of course it was not the sound.
I hear you, loud and clear. Electric guitar is a very versatile instrument and you wouldn’t know it from UA-cam demos of preamps. You might check Michael Nielsen and Leo Gibson sites for a more musically flexible look at these devices. Each is a brilliant composer and player as well as being very astute about the market and technologies. You will hear not only beautiful clean tones, you will hear them applied. Best of luck.
Yeah NAM is basically a passion project that's had a user base explode very quickly. I'm sure they'll come up with some more streamlined workflow with it, but for someone used to modellers ToneX is seamless
Hi Leon - love your channel! Just a friendly heads up - Kemper has pre or post eq within the amp stack too - and obvs you can put an eq block before or after the amp (or both too!) Cheers!
With my blown out Line 6 XP and my current GT-100, I can run music through my pedal box to practice to. Can I do this with TONEX, or do I just hear the guitar?
how does the sound react to the volume pot on the guitar? I tried UAFX pedal and it was incredible in how it reacted. Wasn’t too impressed with the tone though 😢
12:05 you captured the sound of the gain over saturating the preamp tubes. My Triaxis didnt do this until i switched the pre tubes out to tung sol and my Soldano x88 stopped making that sound when i dialed back the pre tubes, so this was all i was left with.

Your criticisms are spot on, I hope IK take note and do something with that clunky software. It's a great little device though, I think your right that it may well become a classic.
Loved the JTM45 capture, but all sounded great. Thanks for the demo.
Yeah I'd love a delay option!
30 minutes! Let me close my free Neural Amp Modeller Dirty Shirley capture and strap in!
I'm still playing with the IR's you gave us👍🙏 so I don't pretend I know how this capture revolution all works....but it sure is interesting... watching the technology quite rapidly become affordable and more accessible. Sounds bloody awesome to me!
These tones sound amazing
Thanks for supplying the pedal Kev... 🥇Thanks for the review Leon...
Thanks for the Recto capture Leon, I was looking for a good Recto sound for one of my bands, and this one fits what I was looking for perfectly.
Enjoy!
. @@LeonTodd its gone 😞
How does ToneX stand up going straight into a cab. I wish more people would make videos that do not require speaker sims. I love my cab and the sounds it poduces, but will these things be any good through it?
That Ada mp1 sounded better than my ada with extra dist pedal. That was like a killer thick double sound. Sick!
Those are some great sounding captures. I like how you made them without cabs. That makes it easier. I especially like the JVM410H. Thanks.
Glad you like them!
Sounds fantastic. Just a detail, the Kemper does allow you to move the EQ around too.
Yes and you can have multiple EQ blocks.
Wow man! Much better video on this unit than the one i saw earlier today. You know who i’m talkin aboot. 🤘😉
I'm pretty sure the weird captures were dropouts in the capture process, i was told to try increasing your buffer if it happens during the capture process
wow i became a fan the minute you played ratt.badass playing.hello fromTexas.
It's THE sound
@@LeonTodd Hi Todd - which IR did you use for the ADA?
I’m bit confused on usage. Is this a a good pedalboard option. That is. Dirt in front with delay snd chorus etc after direct into an audio interface or foh board? As usual. Excellent content.
A fair and honest review!!! Thanks Leon!!! 👍🏻
I use it in my Helix rack loop, works great allowing me to use high dsp effects!
Imagine this as an amp + Fm3, amp is in the FX loop and the Fm3 controls the patch change of the tonex over Midi!
Totally agree!
Yeah that video Leo did is GREAT. Very curious to see where potential hybrid approaches go.
Leo is an amazing guy! Love his music and his vids.
Problem with that is that the knobs interact with each other on tube amps.
I really wish that it had the ability to do 4cm built in and also to choose a cab IR for one out and not for another.
awesome job on these captures man, thanks for showing us the goods
Great review, thanks so much. I think a mic preamp XLR input with phantom power would be good then its your interface too. Software looks clunky but so is a lot of amp sim software. NI's Guitar Rig is horrid too. The Deluxe Reverb capture you did sounds aces. Should Plague Scythe get a link?
Great job !! Captures sound sick!!
Exactly my problem, with the gain, i send my unit back and asked for a refund, cause it happened with captures from ToneX itself as well.
I love the tonex pedal! Use it in the 1st send and return in my Helix rack. Not using the virtual IR or IR loader. I use the Helix IR loader
I've been getting some great sounds with the Tonex VST, but the software is clunky as hell, and the pedal is not ready for the big time. But the platform could be great if users with sick amp collections fill it with great captures.
My not so favorite thing is the lack of an effects loop!
Delay instead of reverb would be cool, would also like to see the option of a boost instead of a compressor
That JTM45 and Deluxe Reverb Oh MY FREAKING GOLLY ❤🎉
My big problem with the ToneX Pedal from a bass players point of view is that there's no way to send the signal out the second output without the IR.
Sounds like clipping of the Analogue to Digital Converter with captures of ultra high-gain amps like the Überschall.
Took the words right out of my mouth! Great vid. Thank you!
Nicely done Kev
A tale as old as time. This was the only life we had as Kemper owners back like 10 years ago when it came out and there weren’t any pro captures.
I’ve got a core , totally pleased !
Hey Boss. Lace Sensors in the Strat at the end? What type are they and do they still have a bit of sterile sound or what? Thank You for the video/information and Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Yeah golds. I really like them
I recently quit my live impro band, going solo in reaper and all.. almost bought the tonex pedal but then came NAM..
and now things got more crazy, just ordered the i/o one thing 😛
Question for you, Could you use the ToneX with a Boss Katana MKII amp as a live rig and have it sound good?
Yeah. Remove cab sim and run the tone X into the fx loop to just use the katana’s power section.
26:00 I couldn't even figure out how to do this. Thanks Leon!
Hm, about the ranking captures complain - Kemper gives you that 1 > 5 * rating option, plus marking a favorite captures. Not sure what you are missing here. 🙂
Would love to see contemporary metal tones in future reviews of gear 🤘🏿
The kemper is able to place the EQ pre or post n the Rig Manager software.
Revv 3, be-od, victory v1 kraken ect
Nice videos you are an absolute gem of a resource and seem like a top bloke :)
Much appreciated mate :)
Good on you, Kevin! Cheers, Daniel
Hi leon..what exactly ir u use.. original Lt tv mix ?
Do you plan to cover the new Tonex One pedal? - it looks amazing!!
Nice one, Kevvo, mate...good on ya!✌
Haha
Yeah I'll dust off the JMP-1 and capture it over the next week or so, fun unit. The Axe-Fx JMP-1 is pretty much sot on as well.
Is it just me, or is there something "clipped" sounding in high gain captures with Tonex? Like it's out of headroom or something.
The preset that Taylor Danley used yours sounded sick on NAM. Tonex seems a bit clunky but much easier than Nam to interface with
Yeah NAM is basically a passion project that's had a user base explode very quickly. I'm sure they'll come up with some more streamlined workflow with it, but for someone used to modellers ToneX is seamless
Hi Leon - love your channel! Just a friendly heads up - Kemper has pre or post eq within the amp stack too - and obvs you can put an eq block before or after the amp (or both too!) Cheers!
great to know, thanks for that!
@@TFT-bp8zk 😂
With my blown out Line 6 XP and my current GT-100, I can run music through my pedal box to practice to. Can I do this with TONEX, or do I just hear the guitar?
EXCELLENT review, thanks a lot!!!
My pleasure!
how does the sound react to the volume pot on the guitar? I tried UAFX pedal and it was incredible in how it reacted. Wasn’t too impressed with the tone though 😢
12:05 you captured the sound of the gain over saturating the preamp tubes. My Triaxis didnt do this until i switched the pre tubes out to tung sol and my Soldano x88 stopped making that sound when i dialed back the pre tubes, so this was all i was left with.
I've never had that issue with any of my amps or preamps before
@@LeonTodd Yeah triaxis was my first encounter. I usually run my gains between 5.5 and 7.0 max, so it wasnt a big thing for me. I didnt notice tone differences, so outta sight outta mind. Thanks for the reply. Great vid as always.
@@LeonTodd Hey man, where can i reach you in private?
