I always believed that the sovereign was meant to be the standard ship, while the eclipse was just Palpatine’s Deluxe, Limited Edition, Ultra-Rare, Legendary Variant
Same, I like to think that the sovereign meant to be a escort ship, to protect the eclipse. I would like her to be a bit smaller but this is fine too

The Eclipse was like an Entei for Sheev while the other guys just got Flareon.

Scarily even with the similarities between Episode 9 and Legends, Legends still managed to put a little more sense into it
Episode 9 has all the bad parts of legends, without the cool stuff
Episode 9 was just Dark Empire but somehow dumber.
Because those were books and comics. If they were movies they couldn't have explained everything.

Yeah, legends had Palpy putting super lasers on SSD, but he wasn’t planning on building 10,000 of them, and instead a core of these SSD that would be supported by fleets of SD.
I just love the lines on this ship, it’s such a beauty, and REALLY wish we had gotten to see this, in detail, on the big screen.
I'm fairly certain the only reason the eclipse was made was for palpatine himself. There was only ever going to be one eclipse, since palpatine wanted to rule the universe, this way he could travel between galaxies and be heavily protected, whereas the soverign was intended to be mass produced and act as a main line ship
If that’s their main line ship I can only imagine how big a corvette would be.

That isn't true though. You don't even have to look at secondary sources like the Dark Empire Sourcebook or anything to verify that; even from Dark Empire alone, the mere fact that there are 2 Eclipses (likely more) indicates it wasn't just a one-off flagship or prototype or whatever. It was meant to be a full class of vessel. The sourcebooks just made that even more clear; the Eclipses AND the Sovereigns were meant to be a new breed of Star Dreadnaught.
How I believe it was supposed to be was the Eclipses would be regional dreadnoughts while Soverigns would control local sectors while system patrol, escort, and flexible naval operations would be handed to the “normal” sized Star destroyers like the ISDs.
Say what you want about Dark Empire, but it really gave us a lot of cool tech and ship designs!

There is a HUGE difference between giving a limited number of Dreadnaughts (axial) superlasers and giving it to thousands of plumped-up Imperial-Is...

The Sovereign SSDs would've been near impossible to destroy while the Xystons ISDs were glass cannons
Not to mention how the Sovereign wasn’t able to destroy planets, unlike the slightly larger ISDs with full on planet killing lasers. It made the power of the DS laser seem all the more terrifying because it showed how only expensive/massive dreadnoughts were even capable of wielding just a fraction of that power (I believe the sovereign was the minimum size).
@@mr.iankp.5734 The ISDs with death star superlasers aren't even anywhere near the size of the Sovereign SSD, the Sovereign is close to the size of an Executor while the ISDs with planet-killing superlasers are the size of a regular ISD
@@Stormyy6310 Yeah, looking back I can see what I wrote being confused with super laser ISDs being larger than the sovereign-class. I knew the super laser IDS were around 2 to 3 km (something of that scale at least), being way smaller than the Sovereign-class’ 15km.

why do you need any, when you have so many heavy laser cannons and tractor beams? Rapid firing point defense cannon might be unable to one shot a star fighter, but heavy laser cannon or turbolaser can. And point defense weapon is useless against bigger ships. But first you need to hit it, that's when tractor beams come in handy, they can quickly immobilize any fighter, that would allow to destroy it with heavy weapon. And gravitational waves travel at speed of light, unlike the plasma from standard SW weapons. So basically: capture, shoot, repeat. I have the feeling, that's the way KDY would envision countering fighters, and exactly the reason why ISDs were not equipped with point defense guns, Imperial Navy just didn't read the instructions.
@@TheCoolCucumber well, I tried to suggest the reason why Kuat could go from the design with multiple point defense cannons (Venator), to one with nothing but heavy armament (ISDs), and why would you need a dozen tractor beams on ISDs and hundreds on SSDs as they seem to be very situational equipment. If used only as it is shown in movies (in this case, only one would be enough). And from Kuat's point of view, more complexity and cost is good. The more expensive and complex the product is, the higher margin can be earned. As for why crews didn't use this tactics is entirely different question and can have lots of explanation possibilities lore wise.

The appearant lack of point defense weaponry doesn't mean much when the literal only source for the ships mere existence is a table top roleplaying game.
Your second point is equally meaningless. Brainlessly repeating that the Empire was "TEH BIGGGZZZ DUMMMBBZZZ" because your favorite youtubers said so doesn't make you look cool, it makes you look like a brainwashed drone spit out of a factory. By all means, how, pray tell, is the Empires tactical and strategic fatally flawed, as you suggest? I will even be nice and give you yet another hint: parroting the supposed lack of point defense isn't going to help you.

I know the Imperials was all about 'Domination Through Fear' but damn, the names of some of their ships were really on the nose. Lol! 'Despot', 'Executor', 'Ultimatum', 'Ravager'...Im surprised there wasn't one called 'Legbreaker' or 'Spinesmasher'.
The Eclipse is my favorite ship of all time. Its just so... pretty.

Nice video! I would like to point out one thing in that the initial 3D design of the ship, at least the ones you show in profile an drop down view, were not created by your source on deviantart but rather I modeled them for fun years ago for the Star Wars Modeling Alliance using references from Dark empire mostly. Still have the original models for it and some others I made for them. Still awesome to see the model spread around the web. Thanks for the work👍

Great video of an interesting ship that doesn't get enough love! The only quibble is the line about a "steady decrease in size from the Executor to the Eclipse to the Sovereign", which isn't really accurate. It's a steady decrease in length, but not overall size. Although shorter, bot the Eclipse and the Sovereign are actually much, much larger ships. For example, in actual naval terms, no one says the Iowa Class are the largest battleships in history, even though they are the longest by about 25 feet at 887'. By comparison the Yamato Class were 863' in length, but they are objectively larger than the Iowa Class, with a standard tonnage of ~64,000 tons, compared to ~48,000 tons for the Iowas. In real ships, it is displacement that is the actual arbiter of "size" and it would follow that mass would be the equivalent arbiter for starships. Wow, I really went on and on for such a minor quibble! LOL Hopefully that doesn't come off like I don't appreciate your video, because I actually am a big fan of your content!

Not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but why was the Sovereign-class never finished? It couldn’t have been economic problems, the Eclipse-class was even bigger and they managed 2 of those AND a Galaxy Gun. So what made them stop making the Sovereign-class?

1:00 But in this case the eclipse and sovereign (which was all they were making with axial superlasers to my knowledge) were 17.5 and 15km respectively were as the xyston was 2.4km which is way to short to have the needed reactors to be even more powerful than those two (since the xyston could destroy entire planet rather than just shatter the crust)
My only real gripe with Eclipse is its relative dearth of sublight engines. You can’t ram ‘em if you can’t catch ‘em.

Idk man i feel like if you had an eclipse, an executor and a sovereign class in the same fleet with a large amount of tie defenders. I literally don’t think anything could stop it.
Honestly probably not the superlasers alone would make short work of any opposing dreadnoughts. And the defenders would take care of bombers.
It’d be vulnerable to battleships supported by a large swarm of corvettes and frigates attacking from behind.
You’d still need a good amount of normal Star Destroyers and Imperial support ships to support the dreadnoughts, as well as TIE Interceptors to screen.

In star wars rebels season 3 and 4 grand admiral Thrawn uses an sentinal cargo shuttle why is he not using a lambda class shuttle?
I thought they customized an animated Sentinel to look like a Lambda, near the end?
chris sonofpear1 no they didn’t I’m the 2 episode o f season 4 you know the one with the Kybre crystal Ezra and Sabine steal a lambs shuttle to escape. But later in that season in the episode flight of the defender Thrawn uses a sentinal class cargo shuttle
This would be more logical for this ship to be revised for the best of the best for the empire and it could have tie hunters and for the flatten so the shield can go smoothly over the hual of the ship.
