      @Valk_72 Indeed. The EU had fallen into a sort of "villain of the week" state of complacency where the New Republic or its heroes ran into a problem and immediately solved it without too much fuss. The Yuuzhan Vong flipped the table, redrew the map, and gave the story stakes it desperately needed if it was going to continue. And the Yuuzhan Vong themselves were fantastic villains, with their own technology, culture and customs, strengths, and exploitable weaknesses. I think they could've handled Anakin Solo's arc better, but they played the hand they were dealt. It would've been interesting to see the version of NJO where he wound up being the main protagonist. Dark Tide really felt like it was building that up.

    If a Venator could hold 400 fighter crafts in a ship of its size while still being a effective combatant, a Imperial Star Destroyer could've used that extra mass to hold WAY more Tie Fighters to protect itself if properly designed with more Hanger space. One of the abilities of the ISD you missed:

    • @Tomyironmane
      @Tomyironmane Рік тому +35

      Yeah, the hangar bays, storage spaces, magazines, and so on to carry the transports that can lift and deliver an AT-AT battalion, the sometimes dubious combined arms of the Empire, and all its logistical trail can't be easy. Honestly, I think the Star Destroyer as a concept is flawed, based mainly around a "Do Everything" that relied as much on intimidation and being Very Big as it did on guns... and once it lost the intimidation factor, it found itself under attack from an equal weight and value of vessels that could out-maneuver, out-fight, and out-gun it.
      The primary purpose of a Star Destroyer was to be a big "enemy ship" with such broad and ill-defined capabilities that no one could bitch at George Lucas for copy-pasting them all over the place and having one act as a battleship, carrier, or troop transport, as the need of the plot dictates. In practical terms, however, it doesn't make sense to have your carriers on the front line of battle, your troop transports not loitering in orbit to interdict planets and support and supply troops, and instead haring off to play battleship, or your battleships burdened with flight decks, ordinance magazines, fuel bunkers, and vehicle bays that have to be armored and hauled along with them.
      Every generation or so, you get some bright spark who thinks they can build a "Do Everything" weapon. The history books abound with these overpriced, overcomplicated, ultimate drains on warfighting capability... and it is the rare example that is even passingly good at some of the things it was designed to do.

    To be fair, the X wing was SUPPOSED to be an imperial fighter, until Incom defected to the Rebels. Without those X Wings, it's a LOT harder to bring down ISDs. Y wings don't do terribly well against TIEs, A wings don't have torpedoes, B wings weren't developed until MUCH later, and ISDs will usually win a fight against most larger ships. Let's not forget the ISD was primarily designed to blast the hell out of ground targets with orbital bombardment.

      Thrawn's strategy to defeat the Rebellion permanently was to introduce a radical new starfighter, superior to anything the rebels had or could even dream of. He recognised very early on that superior rebel pilots and fighters could be a significant advantage as the rebels grew increasingly organised.
      Tarkin, of course, wanted the Death Star. It was symbolic: Tarkin thought big. Thrawn thought small. Both projects were brought to an end within weeks of each other, both by Jedi.

    • @rmartinson19
      @rmartinson19 Рік тому +48

      To be fair, the Venator's stated fighter complement doesn't actually make sense given the known dimensions of the ship's interior. Its best realistic capacity is probably somewhere around half that, and I would bet that loading up that many fighters would put a real crimp on the Venator's consumables (fuel, munitions, spare parts, etc.) and overall cruise endurance. That's still more than the Secutor's 144 fighters and bombers, but it's also worth bearing in mind with a bunch of Imperial ships like the Secutor that some of these numbers might not be the maximum capacity of the vessel, but rather how many the Imperial Navy typically chose to field them with.
      Given the Secutor's size and stated role as a fleet carrier, I would guess that its true capacity would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 48 - 60 squadrons, or 8 - 10 full Imperial Wings (576 - 720 craft). But knowing how small craft were de-emphasized by the prevailing naval doctrine under the Empire, Imperial planners may have decided that 144 was enough for a working loadout, and chose to use the credits they saved with that decision to build more warships.
      Another possibility is that the Empire might actually have been chronically short on TIE pilots. You can't conscript a starfighter pilot. Each one was a professional who volunteered and went through 3 - 4 years of training as an Officer of the Imperial Navy. Then, at the culmination of that huge investment of time and resources, they are assigned to a blazingly fast, but otherwise rickety and unforgiving death-trap of a starfighter. Every TIE Fighter blown up? Literal years of time and hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of credits of investment into that pilot just got vaped by a teenage farmboy savant from some backwater shithole that learned to fly by sniping oversized rodents from an ultra-light aircraft his uncle got him.
      The Empire's doctrine of treating its highly-trained and educated pilots like they were completely and totally replaceable is one of the few things they did that was purely and unambiguously stupid. You can make arguments in favor of most of their other policies if you're willing to play devil's advocate, but there's just no defending that one.

    • @pyronuke4768
      @pyronuke4768 Рік тому +22

      It's because of game balancing mechanics. The guy who designed the original model, Fractalsponge, said he made the two hangers large enough to hold four or five times the fighters of an ISD each, or eight to ten wings in total (576 to 720 starfighters).
      My headcanon explanation is that the Secutor was built as a successor to the Venator, but with more displacement devoted to armament and armor making it a true hybrid battle-carrier; but with the decommissioning of the CIS fleets such ridiculous numbers were seen as somewhat overkill for glorified police duties and they scaled back the numbers carried for "peacetime" operations.
      It's something you see irl: many aircraft carriers don't typically carry their full complement until wartime, to cut back on operating costs.

      @@rmartinson19 you read my mind exactly. I've always felt the 400+ figure was a little high for a Venator. Like, they could technically fit that many in, but only by stacking them like tetris peices.
      Also, 144 fighters is the stated complement for an Executor dreadnought, which is absolutely pitiful for a ship that big, so I think it lends credibility to your "we only require this many fighters for operations" theory.

    Just a couple of notes:
    1-The balls on top are possibly not actually shield generators. This is based solely on assumptions the first game developers made based on an ambiguous line from Return of the Jedi. It is likely, they are instead a targeting array, as they most closely resemble sensor systems on real world ships. Remember that the design language is based on real world ships. The line used from RotJ is possibly said because the port targeting system was destroyed when it was supposed to be covered by the bridge deflectors.
    2-The big ball on the bottom, once again, is just assumed to be part of the reactor. Alternatively, it could be part of the gravity manipulation system, letting large ships with it loiter close to a planet's surface. Something we have seen ISDs do in canon.

    There would have been an extremely simple bit of lore that could have been added to address the exposed Star Destroyer command tower. Just have the most accessible and best escape pods be on the bridge. The reason for having it sticking up like that instead of having the bridge deep inside the hull would be because it would take too long to evacuate the command staff if they were far inside the ship and you'd have more and more easily taken flight vectors. If the pods were on the bottom they would need to fly pretty far to go up, opposite issue if they were right on top and if they were on the sides, front or back the pods may be in danger of an explosion from the ship taking them out. This would be even more true for something like the Executor.

    Venator placement makes me sad, I also feel like using the Remake Mods stats would've made for a better ship comparison, the ships in Thrawns Revenge are made of paper

    • @evanhenderson1760
      @evanhenderson1760 Рік тому +15

      well by TR standards the Venator is even more made of paper than other ships... which is pretty accurate. The Venator was always a design that focused on its ability to carry fighters at the cost of firepower and durability. This means that the Venator has amazing fighting ability when its fighter complement is considered, but struggles against even similarly sized ships when those fighters are removed from the equation.

    • @michaelscalese3142
      @michaelscalese3142 Рік тому +10

      @Evan henderson the Venator had rather powerful shields from was I remember, and the hull was not exactly thin, it could win against the much more heavily armed separatist ships. And the weapon systems I feel were always comically underpowered, the turbolasers should've been heavy turbolasers the ship had the reactors to power stronger weapon systems.

    • @evanhenderson1760
      @evanhenderson1760 Рік тому +6

      @@michaelscalese3142 The main source I could find that indicated that the Venator had significant durability were not comparing it to similarly sized ships, and referred to many others in the same way. Most places that did compare them put them quite a bit lower than their competitors, like RPG reference material (which often forms the backbone of lore for specific ship types). Most sources that visually depict them in combat still show frailty, TCW shows them losing to separatist ships more often than winning outside of exceptional strategies. The battle of Coruscant would not be the best example as all participants had been worn down by a long period of continuous fighting, and frequently involved several ships ganging up on other ships. Also this mod DOES give the Venator Heavy Turbolasers, they just only had a small handful compared to the dozens that their competitors had.

      @evanhenderson1760 Рік тому +4

    While I know it's not in EAW, I wish the Resurgent Class Star Destroyer was added. ~30% longer than the ISD-II, and using Kyber Crystal-enhanced turbo lasers, the Resurgent can go toe to toe with any other ship. It's design also learned from the mistakes of its predecessor, being it's own dedicated carrier - much like the Venator Class of the Republic Navy. It is also a highly maneuverable ship, capable of outrunning it's TIE Fighters in real space if going at full speed. With the exception of much larger vessels, I'd argue its power and capabilities are unmatched, and would easily be put into the S Tier.

    How you gonna do the Venator dirty like that right out of the gate? It has massive firepower, since it can channel 100% of its reactor output into its 8 heavy dual turbolaser batteries if it so chooses. Its reactor output is 50% of the ISD's output, so that means it is 50% as powerful in terms of turbolaser armament, not including its heavy proton torpedoes, the SPHA-T in its ventral hangar bay, and many AV-7 deck guns, which don't draw energy from the reactor. That's also not including the 420 starfighters a Venator can launch, including at least 36 heavy strike fighters, like Y-wings, ARC-170s, NTB-630 bombers, or Z-95 Headhunters. Plus, Venators can actually land on a planets surface, unlike an ISD, and they cost less than half of an ISD. I'd take a Venator over an ISD, Tector, Interdictor, Victory, and Gladiator. The Secutor is the only star destroyer I'd guaranteed take over a Venator (not considering legends star destroyers). The Venator should be in the A tier.

    I kind of disagree with Victory 1 vs Victory 2 opinion. It is true that missiles do more damage then canons, and therefore Victory 1 does better damage when left unchecked by enemies. However besides missiles can be intercepted and jammed, enemy can focus destroying missile launchers as primary thread. Once it is done. Victory 1 is just waste of pop cap. Same cannot be done to Victory 2, as its armament is better rounded and thus cannot be disabled as ease as Victory 1. Besides its damage cannot be intercepted. Simply Victory 1 advantages over Victory 2 quite situational, while it isn't case reversed. And thus I find Victory 2 more flexible than Victory 1.
    I am not saying that Victory 1 is necessary bad ship. It just is better use in different role and is more dependant on other ships than Victory 2, which actually better at job of holding its own in ship to ship combat.

      Allegiances focus on quad light turbolasers along with decent laser cannons makes it extremely accurate and deadly to smaller units, while being too tanky to be easily taken out by bomber swarms. It can destroy 2 isds at the same time too, especially since its main batteries of quad heavy turbolasers are in the back, makiing them one of the last targets for AI to destroy. It also packs those triple ion cannons to quickly take out enemy shields.
      Secutor has a lovely amount of turbolasers, but their bow placement makes them the first hardpoints to fall when shields are off

    • @EyeOfMagnus4E201

    I think the Vic2 would be far better in EAW(and its various mods) if ships just had a general health pool instead of exclusively hardpoints. I like the hardpoints mechanic, but it means ships like the Vic2 and Tector sit in awkward places. If hardpoints instead had their own HP pools, but ships could simply be directly damaged if so desired, turbolaser-heavy ships would probably be a lot better, and small frigate spam would not be as overpowered. Small ship spam has innate advantages of multiple ships being able to hit multiple hardpoints at once, whereas large ships can usually only hit 1 or 2 at a time, leading to a lot of wasted shots.

I'd personally take the Procursator over the others. Whilst the bigger ships are harder to kill they're also inefficient. For the price of one Allegiance you could have a handful of Procursators. You don't have to be a genius to se that the smaller ship loses to the bigger ship one on one, but in terms of the bigger picture the Procursator is the most useful ship of the three.

That made it about 30% larger than the ISD I&II, and much smaller than the Executor, the longest known warship in Star Wars, at 19,000 meters. Secondly, the Nebula-class Star Destroyer was, as far as i can tell, slightly shorter than the Venator, at 1,040 meters long, whereas the Venator was just shy of 1,200 meters long, most often quoted as 1,137.
