- The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is a giant point of contention in fandom. While I personally enjoyed the first two films, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi very, very much, the final entry THE RISE OF SKYWALKER made me rethink a lot of what I felt. It is unfortunate that the final Skywalker Saga entry was a bit of a mess while also retreading story beats without really pushing further. My retrospective is of course my own opinions so no worries if you LOVE each of these films equally. For me, it didnt work out that way. Thankfully we got some interesting new characters like Kylo Ren and Rey but I definitely wished for more.

I agree mostly with what you say. I still love TFA & TLJ. Call a me a sellout or whatever. But TROS Kinda kills all of the previous 2 hard work. So in the end its like a ship that its ultimately sunk by a single mechanical failure. I'd give the sequel an overall 5.8/10. Due to the TROS killing all the potential both previous films had. But YFA is a solid 9/10 for me and TLJ is 8/10. I kinda wish episode ix didn't exist tbh.
@@torahibiki Thats kinda literally how I feel. I feel that TROS made me enjoy it all much less when its all said and done. But Ive also gone through Star Wars disappointment before with the PT, which as I stated, now look like MUCH better movies in hindsight because at least they tell a story that mostly makes sense imo.

I'd say they had the potential of being a great story and we're retroactively made better by the existence of The Clone Wars.
@Geralt of Trivia The visuals were nice but I don't consider it as good visual story telling. IMO all the money going to Kathleen's pockets should go to the artists because they carried this movie on their shoulders.
@Geralt of Trivia I'm not OP but could rebutt some. First off, weird flex to throw around writing credits from other projects. Vince Gilligan wrote Breaking Bad, Rian directed it sure, but the groundwork was already there. Also, to excel in another context is not necessarily to do justice to Star Wars.
OT remakes being labeled as bad stories may be due to the fact that they are exactly that, remakes, complete rehashes. That DOES NOT mean the original trilogy has a bad story, and the whole notion is a pretty lazy argument. By that standard we should praise every franchise that just remakes the first film if it was great. I still think the biggest reason why people criticise the new trilogy's story is that it's not coherent as a whole. It's not actually a trilogy, it's three separate movies with clashing views of what are the themes and what should it be about. For all its failures, the prequel trilogy still had a logical narrative that went from a to b to c, whereas TFA gave us a rehash of A New Hope, TLJ told us to forget everything that happened in TFA (and everything about Star Wars anyway) and TROS hastily tried to erase the narrative of TLJ and just focused on making up a new big baddy for the final film. Hence, the individual films may have their merits, but the trilogy as a whole is a big fucking mess with more narrative and thematical holes in it than swiss cheese.
Well, that's sure a wall of text. Some nice pointers too, though I could do without the constant talking down, hopefully we're all adults here. Also, repeating "ironic" does not make your arguments any more valid.
Considering BB and Gilligan, I would still give very little to no weight to directors praising directors they've worked with. It's a circle jerk of empty gestures that are required to keep you working.
I am fully aware of the works that inspired Star Wars, but it's one thing to pay homage to Kurosawa or Leone and from that build a space opera of immense scale, and wholly another to replicate the plot line within the universe. The OT trilogy is an original story within the parameters of the lore, the sequels are not. The same can be applied to your point of Harrison Ford playing a similar character. That is a notion of him being typecasted and has nothing to do with Star Wars.
I don't disagree that the actual handling of the narrative was lacklustre in the prequel trilogy. It was very lifeless. What I would argue though is that beneath all that nonsense was a coherent script that enhanced and built upon the Star Wars universe, instead of copying it and cheapening the original trilogy, as the sequels in my mind did. The sequel trilogy compeletely erased all feeling of achievement and weight of the story from Episode VI. "Guess what, Palps didn't die and another Empire just came up and we don't really feel like explaining why".
I'm not sure I totally grabbed your point with the snippets from TFA, other than you nicely pointed out how they recycled all the concepts.
About TROS and its connection to TLJ and what I meant by erasing the narrative: First off, Rose gets totally sidelined, as if the script writers forgot she existed until they were shooting. TLJ makes a point of Kylo's coming to his own, and removing his helmet when Snoke scolds him. ROTS instantly returns Kylo to the state of mind he had in TFA, also reinstating the Knights of Ren who were nowhere to be found in TLJ and turned out to be a complete waste of space. Rey's parentage and soul searching gets wrecked, this needs no further explanation. Also in hindsight the whole spark for the rebellion narrative amounts to nothing since in the beginning of ROTS they're still a small band of misfits and the deus ex machina finale armada just falls from the sky.
And what I meant by the new big baddy is that Palps suddenly making an entrance is cheap writing, nothing more. There's the diminishing of episode VI, of which I wrote earlier, also there's the missed opportunity of Kylo Ren actually being in charge instead of yet again playing the second fiddle. Also the whole scenario is a writing rookie mistake 101, where a villain appears without notion and suddenly has an armada of amazing power. It's a move that flies in the very face of dramaturgy. Lessing is rolling in his grave.
Amazing imagery rings hollow non stop though, and isn't remotely enough to make up for the rest ot the garbage. It would have worked much better as a game trilogy with cutting edge graphics. With good gameplay it's easier to forgive garbage characters and events, but never in a movie
The fact that the “big bad” in the sequel trilogy was basically the Empire 2.0 doomed this trilogy from the start. It made it seem like the efforts and victories of the heroes in the OT were ultimately meaningless as the universe was basically back to square one by the beginning of the ST. The ST carries no momentum from the OT and the plot lines between the two are disjointed as hell. The bad guys needed to start out as the unexpected underdogs in this trilogy.
@Owen Grady they could have shown a galaxy where problems overwhelming the Republic, leads some planets to long for a more prosperous time under the Empire. Several systems trade their independence for the promise of the return to a more secure time.

The trilogies felt like they were arguing with each other. like rise of skywalker was trying to undo the criticisms of last jedi, and it seemed like abrams was still adamant on going with his direction. but the deconstruction of the last jedi already cemented what direction it was going in. I know people are mad at Rian Johnson way more, but rise of skywalker could've been completely different. Everything they did with ROS was way worse than last jedi
This is 100% accurate. They should've gone in a different direction straight from the start. The Force Awakens was just a complete replica of A New Hope, The Last Jedi fucked it up even further and with nothing left to save, Return of Skywalker was already doomed...
@Owen Grady they weren't too old. In Legends, when they fight the Yuzhang Vong they are in their late 50's, early 60's and in the ST Luke and Leia are early 50's, they could have had them fighting new enemies.
The new Star Wars trilogy is like a rollercoaster it has its ups, it has its downs, and by the time you get off, you might be feeling nauseous by the things you saw along the way.

The only redeeming quality for the sequels is Adam Driver and his amazing acting ability.
John Boyega is also awesome, it's a shame how underused his abilities were.

Honestly I didn't wanna see TROS but I watched it yesterday and the fact Kylo could look like a menacing Sith dictator and a scared misguided manchild was amazing.
All the actors were great. It's just Kylo had the best character arc.
One of the biggest problems post OT Star Wars has had is that they’ve tried to shove super complex stories into just three films. If I was Disney, I’d tell the folks at Lucas film to make as many movies in a series as they need to tell a good story.

Brings the force timeline to a close in my mind. I don’t disagree that one could find themselves wanting more, but if you follow the force through all characters, you’ve no doubt it ended the way it has to. Beautiful in my mind.
Honestly without the sequel trilogy I might have not really gotten into Starwars.
Either way, I'm grateful the ST exists. It was a fun 5 years.

My personal favorite was The Last Jedi. The issue is how the Sequel Trilogy got two directors with very different visions. Abrams is nostalgic and wanted to connect the Sequel Trilogy with the Original Trilogy in a cyclical way. (Lucas: "It's like poetry. It rhymes.) Johnson is iconoclastic (for better or worse) and wanted to break the cycle with new ideas. Either way, I always enjoy watching Star Wars.
Nice retrospective! The sequels was pretty good for me. In the end i rather enjoy than being critical, and it served. Loved all of it!

Of all 3 movies that I've seen from the sequel trilogy, I thought Force Awakens had a solid way to set up the narrative, it would've been better if JJ Abrams to direct Episode 8 maintaining storyline consistency (with a different title), while keeping Colin Trevorrow for Episode 9: Duel of the Fates. Between the last two movies, it's hard for me to decide which is more re-watchable, but I would lean towards The Last Jedi for its bold yet fucking derivative creative approach. The Rise of Skywalker felt like it was plagued by so much nostalgia and lazy writing with its final act. Ending would've been better if Rey died to save Ben Solo, then making him the Last Skywalker.
It would've been nice to see a pay off for Finn's arc, and a better family character for Rey. I've had this idea if Rey had a grandmother who was conceived by the Force, much like Anakin, but had a more peaceful life. She would cross paths with Darth Vader eventually, then she and her family were on the run from the Empire until their defeat. She taught Rey's mother/father to use the force. Rey's parents were trained by Luke, until they had Rey so they left the Jedi Order. Kylo Ren and the First Order rise to prominence, forcing them to hide Rey in Jakku. Therefore, I could imagine Rey's arc to be another from of a Force Messiah to finally bring balance to the Force and the galaxy.
Well, the day has come. This is a long look back on the entire Sequel Trilogy. Most of you already know my feelings on TROS. For anyone that LOVES all these films equally, no worries. What did not like about Ep7 was Rey quickly getting Force powers out of the blue and Kylo Ren the main antagonist losing in his first outing. Everything else was well and good.
@@ursaber Kylo Ren was wounded. He was limping and bleeding throughout the fight. The physical impact of the Wookie Bowcaster and the psychological impact of killing Han Solo had messed him up. Plus the Force was controlling Rey's actions, at least that's how I saw it.

Here’s a thought: J.J. had the right idea with Palpatine and The Sith Eternal it’s execution was just poor.
Ben’s redemption should have took place over the entirety of the film with him slowly becoming a better person as the film went on.
Instead of rebel fleet ex. machina at the end, they should have stuck with the whole First Order becoming a benevolent empire concept so when Ben finally fully turns back to the light he reforms The First Order into The Third Republic, and they come and save the resistance from the Final Order on Exegol. Seeing Rebel Troops and Stormtroopers fighting side by side against the Sith Troopers would have been a water shed moment for Star Wars. It would have gave incredible meaning to the end of the saga. The Empire, Vader, Kylo, and First Order were never the true enemy, they were just symptoms of a greater evil(Palpatine)
To expand upon that:
Palpatine should have never been behind The First Order. And pickled Snoke should have never been a thing. Snoke should have just been some random darkside user that took control of Palpatine’s abandoned Empire remnants. The Final Order would be a military Palpatine created in exile for the sole purpose of destroying the galaxy he believed abandoned him-actually give Palpatine some character development instead of copy his ROTJ self. Make it clear that he did fail in ROTJ and because of that failure he is back with a vengeance, and instead of putting him into the opening crawl make it a plot twist. Him and Kylo Ren working together should have never happened, and Ren wanting to take the Sith throne should have never been a thing because it was a total retcon of what TLJ set up with his character.

Yes. yes. and more yes. If bringing Palp back was going to be a thing, then this was the natural arc. It made less than 0 sense to have Kylo working with palp in any form. Ultimately the entirety of ST being super successful was Kylo's arc as the Skywalker descendant, especially once TLJ came out and his character earned much deserved popularity. And they effed that up royally in under-serving both Kylo and Ben Solo in IX. They could have written satisfying arcs for both Rey and Kylo in IX, there was room.
One thing I definitely enjoyed throughout the sequel trilogy was all the ruins and wreckage of things from the old trilogy. It was so cool to see and made for some great set pieces!
The Death Star surviving that much is ridiculous tho

The sequels don’t accomplish the same thing
Respectfully, I do not agree that the sequel trilogy is better than the prequels. The prequels dialogue is not the best but I think it’s fine. They add lore to the force itself and the galaxy as a whole. I feel like the natural progression from the prequels to the OT is well done because of the cohesive story George put together. The sequels however, don’t feel like the next natural step in the story. 30 years and no world building, nothing new, no new order, and a Luke who should have grown wiser just did the same thing Yoda and obiwan did. Luke should have learned from the mistakes of the Jedi of old and not make the same mistakes. Kylo was literally his responsibility and you think the natural response was to run and hide. The last Jedi talked about how the Jedi of old failed and he literally did what the Jedi of old did.
Luke DID learn from the mistakes of the Jedi. That was like.... The whole point of TLJ and how he was against the Jedi. But yea he was similar to them in ways but i dont think thats bad. Also yea they didn't world build too well but i do think it was a VERY natural progression. With a young boy trying so hard to be Darth Vader and another character who is a big fan of the Jedi and Luke's legacy really wanting to be like them and they did a good job fixing the whole problem with everybody being the same bloodline and made it so anyone could be a force user but then episode 9 ruined that..... Pretty much just forget episode 9 lmao. But it felt like pretty natural progression
Also yes Luke was responsible for Kylo turning and i definitely think running and hiding from that makes complete sense. When you create something terrible sometimes you're so ashamed and unmotivated that you become depressed instead of being motivated to fix your mistake. I think it made Luke a relatable character and just shows why he's the most interesting character in these movies. Also these movies are about war so im not sure why portraying war torn heroes as recluses is bad. It might seem repetitive but it just makes sense.c

i agree with you on somethings and not on others, but i would just like to point out that your criticism of the sequels and complementing of the prequels are things that were said about the prequels and the originals back when the prequels came out. And in 10 years probably everything you said about the prequels will be used the defened the sequels, and for luke the jedis of old didn't run away they forced their idiology to the point of creating that which they feared the most, in the mind of luke he came to understand the jedis had as much contribution to the creation of vader as the emperor.

This Trilogy basically comes down to three things; Some neat to even great ideas implemented by people without the talent to handle them properly. Using nostalgia and "mystery box" plot elements as a substitute for good writing and creativity. And, having no real plan and two directors that basically ignored each other's work and made their own thing.
Honestly, here's my thoughts on the films in the sequel trilogy: outside of star wars and not being connected to that world and it's lore and established rules, as if it were it's own thing, the sequels really aren't that bad. The issues start coming in when you realize this is supposed to be the continuation of an already developed story "Skywalker Saga". Even in terms of a trilogy, I wouldn't say they're incredibly great when it comes to telling a coherent and good-flowing story as a whole. But I personally find them fine if they were considered seperate films that was in its own world.
So for me, imo, the sequels aren't bad movies, but they're not very good Star Wars films.

"as if it were it's own thing" Tbh this is the kind of talk i just honestly dont understand when some people keep saying things like, "if you look at them as standalone movies, their own separate thing etc, etc" Such words just sound like excuses for the ST and like they're words coming from "Casual Fans".
They're simply NOT meant to be viewed as separate and standalone movies. The Disney Sequel Trilogy was always meant to be the concluding part of the continuing Skywalker Saga.
Maybe its because im a big passionate Star Wars that i simply cant seem to view ep7 ep8 and ep9 as standalone movies on their own.
Ofcourse its all subjective i guess and you can view these movies in anyway you like, but if you do prefer to just think of them as "Standalone" movies and just "movies" in general, that just really shows the Disney Trilogy is a failure overall.

I say that because the sequel trilogy seemingly disregards so many things that were established in previous films, from continuity errors to the rules itself. If it was its own movie(s) without worrying about appeasing to these rules and established continuities from previous films, it wouldn't have mattered. Now what do I mean by these disregards? Bare with me and my lengthy comment (which I apologize for).
The Sequel Trilogy seemingly just says no to Episode 6. It wasn't entirely that way initially, I feel..it kind of was, but it only REALLY got that way when they decided to make Palpatine's resurrection a thing.
Everything in the OT built up to this moment - Vader's redemption and the defeat of the Emperor. And that was fine, we had a nice little trilogy with a solid beginning and a solid ending. Then the Prequel Trilogy came out, and it was all about building up to this moment - the birth of Vader and the rise of the Emperor to power. What I'm getting at here is that even though the PT came out after the OT, the OT feels like a natural narrative progression of and result of the events in the PT. Or to be more blunt about it, the PT feels like the end of an era but not like the end of the story. Episode 6 feels like the end of the story. The Emperor is dead, Anakin has been redeemed, the Empire has lost it's two most important leaders and its superweapon, and the galaxy is entering a new era of peace. The events of the Sequel Trilogy don't feel like a natural progression or result of the outcome of the OT. Everything that happens that is interesting that would have set up the ST nicely happens in the 30 year time skip that we NEVER get to see. This leads to a bunch of questions that everyone has already knows about or has asked, that can all be summarily explained by "Disney didn't plan out what they were going to do," and that's so obvious with their reintroduction of Palpatine. They said "no" to the ending of all that the PT and OT built towards, and made a series of movies which, to this day, don't feel like they really belong in the mythos despite being canon.
Then there's the added fact that a good portion of The Sequels feels and has so many parallels to "Rebels vs Empire" which we've already seen in 1970/80s for the Star Wars Universe. Even taking the secondary material into account, I feel like so much of the ST was Disney trying to make a bigger, better OT, not actually trying to make something that would flow naturally from the results of the OT. Again, if this wasn't connected to Star Wars itself or if it were it's own films, it wouldn't just feel like a blatant repeat of what has already happened.
I also feel like you can also be a major star wars fan but still criticize the Sequels and see where they went wrong. I love the prequels, I felt like they added so much to Star Wars and it's universe. However, just because I'm a big fan of it it doesn't mean I should be blind to valid criticisms the movies face because a lot of them are valid. From bad dialogue, to forced relationships, it wasn't perfect in any way. I hope if you decide to continue this conversation we can do so in a civil way, which I'm sure we can.

Still better than the prequels
I guess from a story perspective, the ST is about Palpatine’s revenge against those who overthrew him, his final attempt to return to power and gambit for reclaiming the galaxy. On a deeper level, I would say the ST is oddly enough, mainly about the past. Our upbringing, how that defines us, our choices we make and how those define us, learning from the mistakes of old in order to work towards a better future, rather than trying to “let the past die.” If there was a central theme for the ST, in my opinion it would be that no matter where you come from, you have the opportunity to do good. This was mainly pushed by TROS, but in any case, Rey, Finn, and Poe all came from places of evil (the dark side, the First Order, and the criminal underworld) yet they rose to become the new saviors and leaders of the galaxy. And I think that’s a really cool message. Overall, I love the ST despite its faults, and while I wish some aspects were better or more coherent, I enjoy it as Star Wars all the same. Nice retrospective, ATAT, btw.
Interestingly the saga was never actually called the Skywalker Saga until Rise of Skywalker was being marketed. Chris Terrio and JJ actually talked about making the Sequel Trilogy retroactively about the Skywalker legacy, a family tale and poetically wrap as the tale of the battle between Anakin Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine. Anakin chose to be selfless, Palpatine chose to be selfish. So it isn't just Anakin's descendant this is fighting against Palpatine but his own descendant too. Rey and Ben are both Anakin's legacy and finished what he started. Rey, a Palpatine completing Skywalker's fight and finishing off the undead Emperor, Ben, a Skywalker doing what his grandfathet initially couldn't. Save the one he cared about from dying. Not by being selfish and being controlling death, but by being selfish and embracing death.

Despite the criticisms people have of the Sequel Trilogy I will always love it! I’m 21 so I’m at a weird age where I grew up with the prequels but I was so young I can’t remember the theater experience when we went to watch them. So seeing the Force Awakens was the first time I ever “saw” a Star Wars movie in theaters and it was a magical! And watching The Last Jedi was the first time I think I absolutely loved a theater experience in its entirety. TLJ had me completely pulled in like no other Star Wars movie had done before. And sure TROS wasn’t my cup of tea, but I know a lot of people who really loved it so I’m glad they did. In the end I’m glad that we actually got these movies rather than nothing at all because it really ignited my love for Star Wars again!

Ahhh to be young, for you its just a movie. You haven't read the comics or books you were never immersed in the world of star wars. I'll give you an analogy, you watched these movies and you loved rey. Now imagine if the new star wars she's old and forgetton about. No one cares for her, even her parts don't feel real. Every time she speaks you want her to shut up and all you keep thinking is where is my hero. Where is the person I grew up watching....now replace rey with luke skywalker and think about the movies again.

The Rise of Skywalker was a total mess. A hodgepodge that rounded everything up in 2 hrs when it needed more time because not everything was answered. Love Palpatine, but he should never have been brought back, stupid storyline.

George Lucas actually wanted to tell the story of the prequels first but he wasn't allowed to because 20th Century Fox didn't like the idea. They thought it was too dark and wanted Lucas to change the story. He went through so many revisions until the story was right for the audience. Remember that Star Wars came out in 1977. During that time, we were going through so much war and conflict. People didn't need a dark story. They needed hope and that's why Star Wars became the franchise that it is today. I personally like the prequels because they're dark but I understand why 20th Century Fox didn't allow Lucas to make them due to the time they were in.

Great video and breakdown of the sequel trilogy. I really wish TROS would have continued the path TLJ laid out. Upon further review, it's pretty astounding how different my view of the sequel trilogy would be if TROS wasn't such a mess. Especially since watching Clone Wars and Rebels and reading Ahsoka, Rebel Rising, and Catalyst (in conjunction with my love of Rogue One) has turned me from a casual viewer of Star Wars to a Padawan level fan...I'm more invested in the overall story and see even more the missed opportunity of the sequel trilogy.

I disagree. I did not enjoy this movie at all. I had way more fun watching TLJ. During RoS I was just not there at all, not feeling anything and mainly rolling my eyes at the ensuing events. T'was just a bad movie and a bad Star Wars movie. Honestly I can't remember a single thing from it other than the Emperor cosplaying GLaDOS.
I really liked this video and this is exactly how I feel about the Sequel Trilogy. Honestly in my opinion I do like the Rise of Skywalker but in general this is exactly what I try to say but can never explain. Also I think this video really made me understand why I really like the Sequel Trilogy and why I think it's very underrated

I enjoyed it overall albeit it’s far from perfect. I think it’s not as bad as many fans make it out to be though and I enjoyed a lot of moments from characters like kylo, Rey, Luke, c3-p0, Finn, Poe and BB-8. Overall I definitely wish it could have been better and there are things I would have changed but I don’t think it’s terrible.
I’d give it an overall 5 or 6 out of ten.
And how I would rank the films I’d like this from best to worst.
Force Awakens (8/10)
Last Jedi (7/10)
Rise of Skywalker (6/10)

I have a great many thoughts about Star Wars, and the Sequel Trilogy in particular.
1. It's time for the griping to end. Every Star Wars movie since the Prequels has taken flak for doing EXACTLY what the fans wanted it to do. UGH.
2. Bullying actors for playing their roles WAS NEVER OKAY! Jake Lloyd's life was damaged beyond repair. Ahmed Best was suicidal at one point. Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley were called awful things and have left social media all together. ARE YOU HAPPY, Fandom Menace?
For me, I got pretty much everything I wanted out of the Sequel Trilogy.
I must make two things clear:
1. The Expanded Universe (pre-Disney) was NEVER canon. NEVER. George Lucas didn't really like it, and took a few things from it, but again, IT WAS NEVER CANON. Star Wars really was six movies and a TV show when Disney bought it. The EU was a pretty interesting place, I cannot lie. Timothy Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy is a REALLY good read. But all the EU was ever going to amount to was fun stories that never really happened.
2. Continuing on from Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Empire was going to take the OT characters places that we would never like, for one reason or another. It was inevitable, considering just how toxic the fanbase can be. I like Star Wars; I do NOT like being a FAN of Star Wars.
The Force Awakens got me SUPER hyped for this new era, though. The trailers looked amazing, and it was the first movie that I'd ever gone to see more than once in the theaters. I liked the new cast- all of them. Rey and Finn and Poe and Kylo and Hux. Han Solo was the best he ever was in this movie. Carrie Fisher nailed it as Leia. Han and Ben's conversation is awesome, my favorite moment in pretty much all of Star Wars.
The thing is, many of us should have known that the big left turn was going to be Episode VIII. The look on Luke's face when he sees Rey with the saber should have clued us in about where Luke was going to be in the next movie- and it wasn't how he was in Return of the Jedi. No. People do not stay the same for three decades. That's not how life works. Having to carry the legacy of the Jedi on his shoulders would have worn him down eventually, and few of us saw it through the hype.
Episode VIII should not have surprised us as much as it did. The Luke-Kylo-Rey stuff is truly amazing. The dyad, the slow reveal of the story of Ben Solo's fall, all of it. Fantastic. Poe vs. Holdo is also good because it's actually rather realistic. Holdo outranks Poe. Poe cannot speak to a superior officer the way he does and not expect consequences, and Holdo was never really obligated to speak to Poe for any reason. Finn's arc, while strange, actually makes sense. The first things Finn does in TLJ are, in order:
1. Try to find Rey aboard the Raddus.
2. Try to leave the Raddus to find Rey.
Finn had left the First Order, but he needed to commit himself to the Resistance. The best way to do that would be to tempt him with what he would have if he had followed through with leaving on Takodana. (The casino is a bit over-the-top, but the message was clear: There are other people who care more about their own agendas than they do about the actual conflict. No matter who wins, THEY win.) Rose was there as something of a counter to DJ, trying to get Finn to see that some things are worth fighting for simply because they are in the right.
And all roads led to Crait. Poe took a page from Holdo's book and led the Resistance to safety (showing that he could become the leader Leia needed him to be), Finn committed himself to the Resistance (going so far as to try and die for it), Rey committed herself to trying to find her own path, and Kylo began to understand that the path he chose wasn't the one he was supposed to take.
TROS kinda crammed as much as it could into its runtime, and here I will give my thoughts as to how it should have gone. I would have split it into two movies, actually, because kriff a trilogy, we have too many goodies to explore, we need another movie:
1. The First Order- This one would have actually been Kylo-and-Hux-centric, as these two consolidate their grip on the galaxy and snipe at each other. However, something is emerging from the darkness- something is taunting Kylo Ren's rule by saying that "I could do it better." This thing turns out to be a Dark Side clone of Rey- and Hux is pulling the strings. He successfully deposes Kylo Ren through the clone. Also, Force Ghost Luke haunts Kylo throughout the movie, fulfilling a promise he had made to Kylo on Crait. As a side plot, Rey trains under Luke, and whenever Kylo reaches out through the Dyad, Rey shuts him down. The last scene of the movie is Ben Solo being rescued by Rey.
2. The Rise of Skywalker- Ben Solo works to redeem himself over the course of the movie, as Rey finally learns her story- she is a clone of the Emperor, as is the new Dark Side version of herself- and Palpatine is trying to come back to life, but has not yet succeeded. Rey and Ben Solo break off to find ways to eliminate Palpatine for good, as Poe Dameron rallies the Resistance (and the peoples of the galaxy) across both TFO and TROS in the wake of Leia's passing for a final stand against General Hux. We venture across the galaxy, to Naboo and Kashyyk and Endor and numerous other places. Enter people like Hera Syndulla, Ahsoka Tano (the Jedi who just WON'T DIE), and so many others. The final battle takes places over Naboo, with Wedge Antilles coming in clutch at a crucial moment with a massive armada of Star Destroyers and fighters within. Rey and Ben Solo go to the surface to engage the clone, and win, with the ghosts of Luke, Leia, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gon jumping in to assist. The Rey clone dies via the Dagger of Mortis and the final scene is of Rey and Ben laying the Skywalker sabers to rest (Leia gave her saber to Poe, who passed it on to Rey and Ben) at the tomb of Padme Amidala Skywalker, before flying off into the sunset.
3. Post-credit scene: Rey and Ben's first recruit is Temiri Blagg, who was in TLJ as the boy with the broom. These three will be a new order of Force-users, combining both the Light and the Dark. The name of this new order? Skywalker.
These are my thoughts. The Sequel Trilogy is a great addition to the story.

I love TLJ as my favorite movie. I like TROS moderately, I liked the way they resolved Ben and Rey stuff but it all felt so dumbed down. There was so much needless fan service, and it felt like a sequel to TFA. The lightsaber is repaired? The helmet is repaired? Rey still has her white outfit? The dialogue was so simple and childish too. "if you don't face Palpatine, it will mean the end of the Jedi and the war will be lost"

I honestly think in the next few years TLJ will get the love it deserves. I remember seeing on opening day and thinking it was meh but the more I've watched it the more I love it.

But it still contributed to the feeling that nothing in the previous movie mattered to this one except Rey and Ben's arcs.
One of the most irritating things about that movie is that Rey gets a cool ass lightsaber, but never even uses it because they chose to repair the blue one. That gold contrast of her blade in Palpatine's blue throne room would have looked stunning too. Fixing the helmet was dumb too. In the marketing, I thought it looked cool with the red cracks, but in the film it just gets in the way and makes all of Kylo's scenes less intimate. I thought he grew out of the Vader wanna be stuff anyways. Such a bummer.

To effectively answer this question in any form of media or art, whether it be music, video games, film, fashion etc..., you need to ask how close it came to living up to its premise. In the case of the Star Wars sequels, there was no plan. They were written in a haste.
For that reason, all I can say about the Star Wars sequels is that we received the sequels we deserved by thinking JJ Abrams was a good writer and director.
As I said, TFA was great. TROS in the hands of JJ and Terrio alone? Bad.

I like the Sequel Trilogy. I like the characters, the planets, the new lore and all that cool music. Though, I do understand the criticisms people have, they just don't bother me really.

Obviously they were never going to live up to the satisfaction that the original movies brought to everyone who watched them but they were fun and entertaining even if they were a bit crazy. It's not like they were the worst movies ever made or anything they were still decent and I have watched them all multiple times. Plus a whole big part of star wars is making inferences and reading between the lines and reading the books and watching the shows and stuff this series was a perfect example of that. A lot of the stuff the happened had a reason even if it wasn't directly stated in the movies. I feel like if kathleen kennedy wasn't the head of lucasfilm the exact same story could've been done a lot better and that just goes to show that it wasn't the movies themselves it was everything surrounding them.

TFA: soft reboot, played it safe, pretty enjoyable the first time around.
TLJ: a weird mixture of GREAT and awful scenes. Visually the best in the series.
TROS: absolutely abysmal, hardly feels like Star Wars. Relied way too much on nostalgia.
The trilogy was a disjointed mess that ultimately ends the same way ROTJ ended and it feels like a waste of time. But in the end, it had good moments and I’m glad it introduced a new generation to Star Wars.
Also I’m happy if anyone really enjoys these movies, I really wish I did too!

But if you couldn’t tell I wasn’t really a big fan of the trilogy as a whole, hell i actually hated TLJ when it first came out (still I don’t particularly like it). TFA is my favorite of the bunch it’s just a shame JJ Abrams completely lacks creativity and nuance.

He wasn’t an orphan his father was a headmaster at an Imperial Academy who had an affair with a kitchen lady. Hux was physically and verbally abused by his father as he brought nothing but shame to him. When Hux meet Gallius Rax, Rax put child soldiers under Hux’s command and when he’s ordered them to murder a few Stormtroopers Hux got a sadistic thrill and later when Hux got the rank of General in the First Order he’d had his father killed

Now, about the sequel trilogy: it was the first trilogy I ever saw in theatres and the energy during my first ever screening of TFA was electric. Same with TLJ, and even to a degree with TROS. I acknowledge they all have issues individually as films but I can’t lie to myself and downplay how much I enjoyed them because I just had such a great time with each one. Is it a bit derivative? Yeah. Are there some missed opportunities? Yeah. Should some things have been explained better? Definitely. But at the end of the day I just love these movies so much for the joy they gave me. Great video, and keep making great content!

Honestly if they had actually had a coherent story and Rey didn't just know all the force powers and win right off the bat I could have liked these films... So much is 'good' but the good is largely due to the Disney budget rather than good character development and story telling. Will need to re-watch these again but it's hard re-watching these when their flaws are so prevalent.

TROS as a story is muddled but has a lot of good ideas. Done well mostly. With a few big slips us in there. Not really like any of the OT movies - like how TFA is like ANH (though not entirely).
I believe this trilogy is good enough. The Last Jedi being my personal favorite. However it became very clear that JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson had two very different visions. JJ is very much a fan of the OT. RJ wanted to do more of a deconstructionist take. For me I would have preferred an RJ deconstructionist trilogy. Rather than a JJ nostalgic trilogy. I know there are a lot of people who absolutely hate RJ (TFM), but for me RJ just had more of a fresh perspective on things.
Agree since a jj trilogy would've been just a remake I think Kennedy should have made them co director with someone else as producer's so that the trilogy is coherent
Rex Besong yeah I think if the two of them just collaborated on the last movie to find a middle road between their two visions then this trilogy would have benefitted greatly. I enjoy TROS but I do think it suffers a lot in consistency (though I said the same thing about TLJ. This is why you collaborate you don’t just pass off your work to someone else)
While I respect what you're saying, I find the misconception that TLJ was deconstructive really irritating. JJ Abrams stated in an interview that he thought that TLJ had a meta-take on the Jedi and it was deconstructing it, but that's because JJ Abrams didn't pay attention to the prequels. It wasn't a deconstructive or meta take on the Jedi, that was a major story point of the prequels and the Clone Wars. TLJ was just picking up that thread instead of leaving it dangling, it's not meta at all, it's literally just part of the story, something 7 and 9 didn't really seem to address at all due to JJ's lack of interest in the PT. If anything, his movies are SUPER meta in the way that they are constantly winking at the audience with nostalgia and call backs.
ed1rko17 I think the issue is that most people don’t know about the novel that exists where Luke has actually spoken with many of the previous Jedi (and his father) since RotJ. So it seems like meta because from a film perspective Luke weirdly knows a lot about the PT that he wasn’t even alive for and thus the discussion about the Jedi seems outta nowhere and from RJ instead of from Luke himself.
I feel like a lot of stuff in the novels and comics is needed to fully understand the larger context of this universe and I blame the movies for needing that lol. They’re too fixated on trilogies when it should be however many movies tells the story you wanna tell.

As someone who loves this trilogy, your review was very fair and respectable. I’ve been in the Star Wars community for quite a while I’ve seen fans bully actors because they didn’t like their character and they spend most of there time hating on these movies and being jerks to people who actually like them. One time when I said that I loved the Sequel Trilogy and thinks there better than the Prequels, one person called me an average 10 year old and that my opinion is wrong and another person said that I had terrible taste and that it was an embarrassment that I liked these movies. I used to think all Star Wars fans are like this but I was so relieved to see that while your not the biggest fan of these movies, you treat your opinion as an opinion like it should be and you are very respectful. I really think trying to focus on the trilogy as a janky shift of vision between JJ and Rian is such a glib way to view it and puts too much cynical emphasis on what seems retconned. It’s like saying Vader and Leia was never being alluded to being Luke’s father and sister prior to their reveals because of different visions. From a certain point of view, that is the case and it was conflicting visions within George’s own head because he couldn’t make up his mind. The sequels may have purposely tried to mirror that jankiness because it’s in Star Wars’s DNA. Star Wars has always been abstract art, each movie retroactively retcons each other with uncomfortable differences like the prequels being primarily advanced planets with rich civilization while the originals were primarily environment planets.
Internet cynicism and a broader knowledge of filmmaking nowadays really makes us much more apprehensive about the movies’ choices rather than going with the flow. As opposed to thinking “oh wow there was more to Rey’s story as JJ said,” fans went “JJ THREW OUT RIAN’S IDEAS.” As opposed to thinking “what made Luke so sad and depraved?,” fans went “RIAN JOHNSON NEVER WATCHED A SINGLE STAR WARS MOVIE GODDAMMIT I WANT HIM KILL HIMSELF AND I WANT TO KILL MYSELF.” If this kind of climate existed back when ESB came out, Darth Vader’s father reveal would be received with “IRVIN KERSHNER COMPLETELY IGNORED OBI-WAN TALKING ABOUT HOW VADER KILLED LUKE’S FATHER.” and completely ignore George’s involvement like how they ignored JJ’s involvement with TLJ. Over time, TROS will feel it naturally flows with TLJ and it does for me. I often hear people claim that the prequels and originals flow together well unlike the sequels and that’s really just the 2000s generation’s perspective (my generation) because their Star Wars were those 6 movies so it’s hard to process whatever’s new when you become older. Once I became a more mature adult, I started seeing how the prequel and original trilogies really differ.
The Final Order’s abrupt appearance is meant to contribute to that surprise factor and yet we just criticize it because of internet cynicism. I don’t think it ever mattered whether it needed to be alluded to, considering the OT’s deuce ex machina nature. It’s also part of the “phantom menace” idea with Palpatine pulling the strings behind The First Order. I never saw the The First Order as being undermined by The Final Order either, it just became an extension of it. Like, the first order of Palpatine’s contingency was to inject fear by blowing up the dominant government then the final order of Palpatine’s contingency is to then further take control with the Sith fleet while the galaxy was expected to not be able to stand up for themselves because they aren’t able to rely on the government. This is what “they’re just people” means and the “navy” was referring to the New Republic navy.

Seriously, that's my biggest gripe with the sequel trilogy. Nothing new got accomplished at the end of the sequel trilogy from the OG trilogy. i just finished rewatching The Rise of Skywalker and we literally ended up the same place we end up at the end of Return of the Jedi. The Emperor hoping our protagonist kill him so they will turn evil while mocking them that he forced them into a trap. Then the galaxy has a party because the final order was defeated and we're back where we started before. At least with the prequel trilogy we witnessed the rise of the empire, Vader, and the emperor.
EXACTLY. It completely undoes all the accomplishments of the Original Trilogy and overall is just the Original Trilogy remade. TFA was a remake of ANH but what others don't really see is that TLJ was also a remade of ESB. The Prequels were alot better.

Cytron1515 you forget the TROS is a rehash of ROTJ which is both the best and worst of not only the original trilogy, but also the sequel trilogy as well, seriously how does no one see this? Dare I say it? My favorite Star Wars trilogy. These movies were my open door to Star Wars and I loved each one of them.
For me the problems really started with TROS, but I love the movie now and I think there are things that could have been handled better but I also think there are some really awesome pay offs to both TFA and TLJ and I loved the Rey Skywalker ending.
It also could have been done better, but I found myself rewatching the scene a lot of times and finding new interpretations, not only what it means to Rey's character, but to Star Wars as a whole and it just makes me so happy that she is the first SW character that is actually very close to the two suns (Not even a sunset, sunrise).
But I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters. We need a post TROS animated series and perhaps, like Clone Wars, it could change our way of viewing the sequels as whole. TROS changed the way I watch TLJ and TFA and I've grown to love these films even more.
In Rey's words: "If there is one thing I'm beginning to learn, Poe, is that you can't dwell on changing the past. Concentrate on the present. Work with what you have."
And I have these films as my comfort films, so, I'm happy.

Instead of saying what happens AFTER the rebels beat the empire, Palpatine exploded, evil Skywalker dies saving someone from the Emperor, and desert planet hero turns into the last jedi after finding out they're the offspring of a sith lord... Disney just told that story again while swapping names out. Death Star is now Starkiller, we got a new drug smuggler turned ace rebel pilot. I could go on for pages and pages.

In Force Awakens and A New Hope the heroes go to a Cantina to find a Smuggler to bring the Droids to the Empire. There's even a deleted scene in TFA of Rey being bullied in the bar and that bully losing his arms like Luke in ANH. In A New Hope it was World building. In TFA it was fanservice. Utter shit trilogy IMO
I also find comfort in these films because I got to meet and grow up with these new characters. Yes, I see the flaws too but that doesn’t stop from loving these films. I never got to grow up with Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padme but I got the chance to grow up with Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo, who is one of my favorite Star Wars villains.

Finally people are talking about the film TLJ WAS. And not about how it wasn't what they thought Star Wars is
To me, they could've been so much better, instead of just tearing down all the old accomplishments like getting rid of the new republic, Lukes Jedi, and making the empire back and having more death stars and rebellions.
We should've got to see Luke, Han and Leia's children at the forefront, Mara Jade as well, this way they have way more characters and story options, it should've focused on Lukes new jedi order fighting a new threat, not just Palpatine again, have one of the Solo twins fall to the dark side and Have Lukes son, Leias Daughter and a new Jedi character be the main characters, trying to get there family back together, there is so much more weight this way.
Have the focus be on the ot characters in the first part of the trilogy and slowly melt the two together, then once people like these new characters, they could just do more films with them.
I wanted to see part of the eu and something new with the sequel trilogy and combine them together to create something original. Luke doesn't need to be an all-powerful god jedi, I simply wanted to see him at his highest point, see what Luke was like training a new generation, cause we never got that.
The sequels aren't in my canon because they are just too lazy and unoriginal and make the OT completely meaningless in the grand scheme of the saga. Ill stick with the eu Thrawn trilogy, but I do liek alot from them, and Adam Driver was the best thing about them

@@darthtrip7188 euh not really. TLJ is far worse than AOTC. First of all AOTC actually mattered in the grand scheme of things and put things in motion. The clone wars started, dooku was introduced.... TLJ showed us how the 'resistance or rebellion' idk but the movie doesn't either so what does it matter, showed as a slow chase that took like 3/4 of the movie and made no sense at all and was boring af... So all the pacing issues u have with AOTC are even worse in TLJ and the bad lines such as 'i don't like sand' and the majority of the romance comes back in TLJ too. 'saving what we love' and pretty much rose's entire character...
TLJ mainly served to kill off luke. Nothing else happened but the near destruction of the resistance because of the inside job from Holdo.... Oh and rey became god after 2 half-assed not even correct lessons from jake skywalker. I'm sorry but AOTC and TPM are far better than TLJ that did more damage to the franchise than add anything. On December 18-19 I got the opportunity to watch all nine films of the Skywalker Saga. From 7pm on the 18th to ending on the 19th at 7:30pm. From what I gathered to formulate my opinion, is that all three trilogies do not sync up visually, but have the heart of Star Wars' storytelling in terms of focusing on the Skywalker family. Star Wars 1-3 focuses on Anakin's fall to the dark side. 4-6 Focuses on Anakin's redemption on top of his son training to becoming a Jedi in the middle of a galactic war. 7-9 focuses on Ben Solo's redemption from falling prey to the dark side, Rey Palpatine finding her place in the Galaxy in the middle of the unfinished galactic war from the original trilogy.
Most everyone, and the sequel trilogy felt jipped, because their nostalgic characters were dying left and right when it really wasn't their story. I think people wanted the characters from the original trilogy to be a larger focus, rather than a story of passing the torch to the new cast members of Star Wars. I've told people many times the reason we did not get flashback scenes as much that are were post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens, because of the fact the actors are old and de-ging CGI affects on them would like far worse than when they de-cgi Governor Tarkin and Princess Leia in the Star Wars spin off film: Rogue One.
We did get a flashback in the Rise of Skywalker And it was pretty decent, but imagine if we had three films with that de-aging CGI mechanic and then three films of the new cast of Star Wars. That's one of the reasons the prequel trilogy going into the original trilogy and the original trilogy going into the sequel trilogy doesn't look as good visually. They still captured the heart of telling the story of the Skywalker family, however in my opinion. They all are beautiful movies visually, but it is clear how much of a contrast in technology is in the movies.
Disney is making up through novels and comics and video games and spin-off TV shows of what happened post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens and I think that's the smartest approach in terms of telling a conclusive story for Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca and Lando. Otherwise telling their story post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens in cinematic fashion would confuse and bewilder and even disappoint many fans.
From the get-go, the reason I feel people were excited for The Force Awakens was primarily the fact the original cast from the Original Trilogy was making a return and they wanted their return to be nostalgia filled and them going on an adventures together and coming out on top from the villains. Instead the sequel trilogy taught that these legacies were broken all because Palpatine little by little corrupted Ben Solo in falling prey to the dark side just as he corrupted Anakin Skywalker. It shows us life still happens even after wonderful victories and triumphs. It also teaches that if we aren't careful, history will repeat itself within family. The Skywalker has and will particularly effect the entire galaxy, because the the family is strong in The Force. Their impact in the galaxy is game changing in every sense of the form.
You have Anakin Skywalker who is created by Palpatine and inadvertently the Force intervened by making him a messianic figure to defeat the Sith for a time, then you have Luke Skywalker who is to redeem the Messianic figure and then you have Ben Solo, who has to grow beyond them all and carry the legacy onward. "We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters (and parents)." -Yoda
Now many are upset with Palpatine's return. For me I feel differently, because his return was inevitable for a number of reasons.
1. Books that were published by Disney of Star Wars that were set in after Return of the Jedi foreshadowed heavily his return. He is the main villain throughout Star Wars 1-6 and it makes sense to me that he wouldn't be defeated so easily by Anakin throwing him over a figurative cliff. The mastermind who raised up an empire wouldn't die so easily. In my opinion he knew that Vader was going to be redeemed by his son and that his empire would lose to the rebellion. We learn from books published by Disney that the emperor provided the necessary contingencies foreshadowing his return after losing the Battle at Endor.
2. I was very concerned in The force awakens when Ben Solo spoke to Vader's fractured charred helmet calling out to his grandfather and showing him the darkness of the Force "again". Mainly because Anakin had restored balance by bringing down the Emperor's Empire. Then you find out in the Rise of Skywalker that Palpatine spoke to Ben Solo and showing him the dark side of the force with the voice of Darth Vader. Palpatine also created supreme leader Snoke whether that is a broken clone of Palpatine or that he biologically made a Frankenstein of a monster I don't know. But it makes sense that he would create a dark side force wielder no one ever heard of.
3. With Rey, being directly Palpatine's granddaughter, it would be a wasted opportunity if she did not confront her very grandfather at the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. Let alone a wasted opportunity, if Ben Solo did not confront the very being who seduced him to the dark side.
4. I was once told Palpatine's return in The Rise of Skywalker nullifies Darth Vader's redemption in becoming Anakin Skywalker. For me personally, redemption shouldn't be discounted by the amount of lives you take rather, the life you take for yourself in self-sacrifice for something greater. Their actions are not in vain merely because their greatest foe survived. Luke himself told Rey that there was balance of the Force for a time. Darth Sidious was no longer the emperor and the way of the Sith was destroyed. We learn from various sources that Kylo Ren and supreme leader Snoke were not Sith. We know that as well mainly because they did not have Sith eyes.They simply used what force they could for dark purposes based on the knowledge of their ability. Kylo Ren thought by killing his father he would become a true sith, when we see throughout the later movies he felt extreme guilt rather than satisfaction for killing his father.
I love how by the end of the rise of Skywalker you see Finn, Rey and Poe in a group hug. My mom asked me why Finn was in the middle of the hug and not Rey. My answer was simply because Finn rescued Poe and he also met Rey. He brought them all together because he had the courage to leave behind the First Order even if it was for just running away at first. I love that the film ends with Rey visiting Luke's home on Tatooine. The very first Star Wars film that was released in theaters known now as A New Hope began on Tatooine. To me there was no other way to end the Skywalker saga in many regards and I'm truly grateful for the sequel trilogy being created. I'm looking forward to see what else Disney has in store for a galaxy far, far away. . . .
I have only two complaints regardingThe Rise of Skywalker.
1. We do not see the political state the galaxy is in now that the Emperor and his military are finally defeated. I am honestly one of the fans of Star Wars who enjoys the politics expressed in Star Wars.
2. By the end of the film Rey looks out in the distance and sees the force ghosts of Luke and Leia. I would have loved if it showed the force ghosts of Anakin, Shmi, Padme, Luke, Leia and Ben personally. I know Shmi and Padme are not a Jedi, but I think personally it would give more depth to the mythology of Star Wars if Jedi could bring back their loved ones in spirit form who are not Jedi.
I would be seriously surprised if anyone reads this and agrees with what I say. Either way I love all nine films of the Skywalker saga. Not equally mind you. But they definitely impacted me as a child, teenager and adult.
I agree. I also liked how Ben saved Rey through an selfless act. Palpatine only could CHEAT death, as he once told Anakin, in fact the only way he found to stay "alive" was creating a "zombified" body to hold his spirit, because he was too arrogant to accept death (sith)... (I also theorize that Anakin, who was a possessive person because of his past traumas clung uncounsciously to his wife's life vitality thus killing her in childbirth, and remaining alive in the tragic process...). This means that Ben found a way to accomplish what his grandfather was unable to do.
Selfless act: give life to save your loved one.
Selfish act: try to challenge nature to remain alive... in UNNATURAL ways (Palpi), and sucking the life force from others( Anakin in ROTS and Palpi in TROS).
I know that Anakin already did that by saving Luke but I just felt happy that this theme and amazing power was reintroduced in TROS. I was quite surprised by how JJ honored the PT working with this theme. But I feel that many people didn't undesrtand this hole saga arc. Maybe I'am wrong, but I don't think that Palpi killed Padmé, I just like my theory more haha. Reading and listening is easy, but I still have writing problems so please ignore the mistakes.

For those who like the Sequels, I'm happy for you. I loved the first two films, and was counting the days until TROS premiered. Then, I found out how it ended, and spent the next week crying my eyes out. The Sequels had their problems, after all, no movie or TV show is perfect, but I can forgive a lot of flaws if it's able to stick the landing. TROS, in my opinion, not only failed the landing, it crashed and burned.
I think one of the earliest problems for the whole Trilogy was Poe Dameron surviving and being a main character. I'm not bashing on Oscar Issac, I think he did a good job with what he was given, and I can't wait to see him as Duke Leto in Dune. But having Poe as a main character was one too many for the writers to handle, and I think that ended up dragging down TLJ a good bit. If there hadn't been a Poe storyline then that would have been more time to flesh out Canto Bight, and we could have gotten more Rey and Ben.
Another thing is that a lot of fans wanted Poe and Finn to hook up, which would have been ballsy, to say the least. Not everyone would have liked it, but I'm all for a gay main character if they're done right. My favorite from the Aftermath Trilogy was a guy named Sinjer, he liked other guys, and I freaking loved him because he was a three dimensional character who had a relatable arc, which was, to put it simply, dealing with the sins of his past.
I loved having Rey as a nobody, and the message that was sending, but at the end of the day I can accept her being a Palpatine. But the biggest problem I have, and this is what had me in tears, was Ben's death. The entire Sequel Trilogy had set up a great enemies-to-lovers arc between Rey and Ben, and after everything those two had been through they deserved a life together. Yeah, Ben had done terrible things, but he was still a young man in his prime and should have had a chance to atone. Even if the rest of the galaxy didn't forgive him, that doesn't mean it wasn't worth trying. This will probably change in a few years with books, TV shows, etc., but as things are right now Ben was robbed of his chance to make things right, and Rey was robbed of the family and belonging she'd wanted for most of her life. This isn't how you treat your main couple in a fairy tail. I have no idea what DLF was thinking when this ending was decided, but for a movie that was supposed to wrap up the Skywalker Saga, it failed utterly.
In a meta sense I love how Chris Terrio and JJ actually talked about making the Sequel Trilogy retroactively about the Skywalker legacy, a family tale and poetically wrap as the tale of the battle between Anakin Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine. Anakin chose to be selfless, Palpatine chose to be selfish. So it isn't just Anakin's descendant this is fighting against Palpatine but his own descendant too. Rey and Ben are both Anakin's legacy and finished what he started. Rey, a Palpatine completing Skywalker's fight and finishing off the undead Emperor, Ben, a Skywalker doing what his grandfather initially couldn't. Save the one he cared about from dying. Not by being selfish and being controlling death, but by being selfish and embracing death.
Initially I thought JJ made Rey a Palpatine to pander to fan theorists but it actually added on to Last Jedi more than I thought. Last Jedi was about exploring what make Rey's tick, she wants to fit into a nice legacy that would give her a place in the galaxy. But Last Jedi says she has to define herself and choose her own path. Her arc can't end with the second movie so Rise of Skywalker is saying even if you come from evil you define who you are not your blood, some things are thicker than blood. And that's the message the Sequel Trilogy is sending
Ben did make things right by selflessly giving up his own life to save Rey's. Rey does have a family with Chewie, Finn, Poe, BB-8 and C-3PO. Ben living would've been heartbreaking as he has no one left in his life except Rey and in order for her to live he had to die. I thought it was very beautiful I'm sorry you were so upset

I think we may well have gotten that with a director like Christopher Nolan, or Jon Favreau or even George Miller. Those talented directors have the "balls" to do something different but also stay true to what came before.
The reason is simple. The prequel trilogy was met with so much toxicity for not being “as good as the originals”. So disney wanted to play it safe and give fans something familiar. That’s why you get jj abrams. Just look at what he did for star trek. It was a strategy. They got rian johnson for the second one to do new things and take star wars into new territory. This obviously did not please everyone because star wars is considered sacred by a lot of the fandom. Imo the problem with star wars is the fandom. It became evident to me this was the problem with the prequels. Look at all the hate on jar jar, anakin, and the politics involved. They pretty much made george lucas sick of star wars which is a pretty amazing and sad thing to happen.
@@Heathboy420 It's not so simple. Blaming everything on "toxic" fans is never the entire story. It only serves as a great excuse for untalented and lazy "artists". The rejection of Johnson had nothing to do with the franchise being "sacred", even the dumbest fans are aware that SW is mass-producing corporate machine. Every fanbase has toxicity and it is handled quite well in most fanbases (and btw, criticism is not toxicity or hate, a differentiation many can't comprehend).
And when it comes to George Lucas, the man was sick of Star Wars in 1980. There's a reason there was almost a 20 year gap and I think one can argue that it's because he's a man who never totally comprehended his own creation or what worked about it. And say what you want, but it was clear that his main reason to return was money.
I think the ST is about the story of the Jedi that took the Skywalker legacy after none of them will be there to do it. At least that's my point of view.

TLJ had some of the best Star Wars moments in the saga, but it also was 1 of the clunkiest up to that point. So, I'd put them both around and 8.5 or 9. TRoS, as just a movie, is barely passable, which for me is a score of around 6. However, since I read the novelizations, the book actually saved the story for me. Imo, the novelization is a required companion to the film, and elevates it to a 7.
The only parts of the last jedi I genuinely love to rewatch are Kylo, Luke and Reys entire scenes, the rest like canto bite/Poe and Holdo ship plots I skip past, cause they are boring and that time should've gone to developing more of the great stuff like the history between Ben and Luke
@@BRONZALiVE I didn't care for the Canto Bight sequence either, but my boy enjoyed that part the most, so I'm forgiving of it. I want Star Wars to b multi-generational and even multi-cultural/sexual. I like that my Asian wife is enjoying Star Wars now, since they r including more Asians and women, which help her feel a personal connection. I enjoyed the Holdo/Poe stuff, regardless. I like the subversive nature of the movie. I even like the homage to BSG with the "slow space chase of the last survivors". But, I agree with u that the Rey/Kylo and Luke storylines were by far the best parts of the movie. The throne room battle is now my favorite moment in the entire saga. Gave me goosebumps even after multiple viewings.

The problems with new trilogy begin in the premise. You can’t have a continuation of a story and start it off as a soft reboot. You seriously can’t do it. How or why is there a need to continue a story as well by telling a story that’s already been told? They should’ve did their own new thing. The “Skywalker saga” ended with return of the Jedi. They still could’ve used the old characters in the first or second movies, but have the story be about something completely different. I get so frustrated talking about the new trilogy with people who defend it. You can’t just go into a trilogy with no idea where its gonna go, let alone BUILD ON TOP OF STORY THATS ALREADY BEEN CONCLUDED with no idea where you’re taking the story. It’s baffling to me.
So, I just learned that is was Kasdan who brought any nuance to TFA. I wasn't surprised. Imagine if he wasn't involved....
But to your point, yea, it's definitely strange in a sense. It's why I really enjoyed TLJ for being the only "new" story out of the 3. TROS tried so hard. But beyond it being visually star wars and rampant...the story is so whacky.

On the idea that the First Order was replaced with the Final Order, I’m pretty sure the First Order merged with the a Sith Fleet to create the Final Order, ie, the Final Order is the First Order.
Totally, I think that's what the intention was but as a viewer, before reading the novelization, it was kinda unclear to me what exactly happened. I thought the way the first order was portrayed on Kijimi was very interesting and kinda wished there was a bit more connective tissue to the one shot above cloud city. Cheers! 🤟
@@ATATChat It seems like there is a lot of confusion with the viewers in Palpatine's return/the Final Order/the First Order. It's all one thing. It's all Palpatine's contingency plan. That's why I'm always shocked when people say that Palpatine's return comes out of nowhere, and the First Order is just a copy of the Empire.... No, the First Order IS the Empire, in it's next phase. Then the Final Order is the next phase after the First Order, and Palpatine has always had a massive presence in the entire trilogy because the First Order is a continuation of his influence and creation. I don't blame the audience for being confused, maybe it could have been more clear, but yeah, Palpatine, the First Order, The Final Order, the Empire, it's all one thing, it's all connected. I think that's a huge part of why people think that this trilogy seems disjointed, it's that they don't understand this.

Honestly TFA and TLJ are my favorite SW films. TFA for being really fun and exciting, TLJ for slowing down and delving deeper into the characters. I really don’t like TROS but overall I think the ST is very good and does not deserve all the hate it gets.

Yess, the books! I've never heard someone point that out. In TFA, I thought that Luke looking for the first temple was a huge set-up for a reason why Luke went to Ahch-To. Like that some weird power was in the galaxy or something.

As far as I'm concerned it was good because I enjoyed every single one of them the first time I saw them in theatres. Now I like TFA, love TLJ and can take or leave TROS but that opinion tends to change fairly often.
I find that TROS is definitely one you have to watch a few times. Each time I've watched it I've liked it more. I don't think it's the best of the Trilogy but it's probably the most fun. It's just so entertaining all the way through.

I feel like if they made Fin more conflicted about killing his own brethren, it would have made Ep 7 more interesting for me. Him being part of the cast felt pointless without this conflict.
Also, if they would have found that the Starkiller didn’t have a single weak point, it would have been a nice plot twist with the stakes being raised in a natural way. But having the Starkiller having the same one weak point as the Death Star was embarrassing.
Finn was my favorite he brings something different however I did not like Rey and disagree with your point of view although I respect it. I think her not having the level of immaturity or other flaw makes her uninteresting. Here’s my other bit about the actual films. The Force Awakens was great, the build up, action, and characters as well as the return to old ones was brilliant from a screen chemistry standpoint. Bringing back the swashbuckling and heroism really captured me. Han dying was shocking and call me a nostalgia freak is when it dropped off a bit. I also think Rey shouldn’t have had the ability to defeat Kylo. The build up for her training and character would have been better. And seeing Luke (my favorite) appear was mind blowing. Otherwise 8.2 of 10.0
Now onto the Last Jedi, I don’t love it, but I enjoyed. I loved the opening scene, as it felt like a callback to the epic space battles of old. About Rose I didn’t hate her but I definitely don’t like her character, she didn’t feel original and inspired. I think that was the point. Either way I think Leia’s female character worked much better. She was more captivating as a character. But Rose was just kinda there. I preferred her role as a side character in RoS. I did like Finn be her traveling about, again swashbuckling. Admiral Holdo was not great either, she just introduced herself and we are supposed to care when she dies? Sure it’s a matter of the greater good but she seemed full of herself. Like disregarding Poe and the others. I don’t know how I feel about a hint to Leia having the force. It was good and iffy. Now Rey’s training is just annoying she seems to just agitate Luke who acts as if he never learned anything from the previous movies. He acts unlike himself. I didn’t care for the lazy plot holes and Rey’s overpowered being.

RoS I love this movie, the amount of action and “Star Wars” absolutely grabs me. I like the concepts and ideas. Although Palpatine returning is a lazy move and makes the OG trilogy feel useless. However the finale for the saga was heartfelt and wonder filled.

Cinematography and screenplay was great, concepts were interesting, but poor writing makes them seem underwhelming. I also feel as if they can seem disconnected and sort of too much. Despite this I think they are good films with some bad writing. They still hold up as Star Wars movies. Thanks if you read this and May the force be with you.

You did a masterful job on this video. I was completely invested in what you had to say, I literally agreed with almost everything you said. The Last Jedi is my favorite of the 3, The Force Awakens is a reboot of A New Hope & The Rise... is too fast & messy. To explain my complete feelings on the ‘Skywalker Trilogy’ ...a numb feeling... not really feeling the emotion I did after Return of the Jedi. Maybe that was 11 at Jedi & 48 at Rise, I don’t know. I want a serious no nonsense Star Wars film that makes me feel ALL the emotion possible. Which is weird because I love SOLO & ROGUE ONE I ways more than the Sequel Trilogy. Anyway, you again did a great job & Thank God we even HAVE Star Wars in our lives.

This is finally the first review that I agree with, I've been waiting for someone to say it. TLJ was the best in the trilogy because it had the guts to try to tell a story rather than just circlejerking over OT nostalgia. I personally would take it a step further: TFA is a good standalone movie, BUT actually set the whole trilogy up to fail. You can't waste a whole episode of the trilogy on a nostalgic reboot. TLJ was good because it was able to correct for that error: why the heck does Kylo Ren need a helmet? He doesn't, that's silly nostalgia. Why are there still Rebels after the OT, what even is going on in the war? At least the Canto Bight scene tried to explain since TFA didn't; yeah that part is also TFA's fault. Who is this bland, generic, rip-off emperor and why is our main antagonist with a great backstory just relegated to the role of henchman again? We already saw that movie, it was called A New Hope, give us something new. TLJ set up a great story for Kylo.
Rise of Skywalker then threw all of that in the trash, and so the whole trilogy was super confused.

Swing and a miss. The reason TLJ got all that backlash and basically almost destroyed the IP was because it took up all the setup/lingering plot threads from TFA and ignored or ended them, never progressed the narrative as all the characters end the film in the exact same position they were in at the start of the film, had no reverence for the lore as it was very meta, and it’s execution of its themes and ideas was flawed. That’s not even accounting for all the plot holes, irrelevant subplots, inconsistent tone, and debated interpretation of Luke. Plus, Kylo never needed that helmet and it’s pretty clear he had it because that’s what all the knights of ren wore and he was obsessed with living up to his grandfather as he was corrupted by Snoke. They’re not rebels, they’re a task force charged with fighting the first order. Canto Bight didn’t try to explain anything and it’s commentary on war profiteering, child slavery, and animal abuse was the most basic “this is bad” message. It’s all surface level. Coincidentally, all this largely exemplifies how TLJ couldn’t make a single point without being anti-anything or what came before it. At the end of the day, the audience is left with a 2 1/2 hour film about a ship being slowly chased through space because of fuel problems. I dunno, experimenting in chapter 8 of a 9 part story is a horrendous idea and doomed the trilogy by ensuring there would be no overarching narrative or consistency to all three films. I mean after TLJ, it took a break from releasing films and a collaboration between George Lucas’ protege and Jon favreau building upon preexisting lore in tv shows to make sw exciting and liked again. There’s a reason for backlash. Always.
People love to critique the 'Star Wars' sequel film trilogy for not having been fully planned out, but neither were the other 2 'Star Wars' film trilogies. George Lucas didn't come up with Darth Vader secretly being Anakin Skywalker until he wrote the script for 'Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back' after 'Star Wars - Episode 4: A New Hope' was released, and he didn't come up with Luke and Leia being biological siblings until he wrote the script for 'Star Wars - Episode 6: Return of The Jedi' after 'Star Wars - Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back' was released. However, the concept of Rey being Darth Sidious's granddaughter was actually thrown around while 'Star Wars - Episode 7: The Force Awakens' was being made, in addition to the concept of Rey being a Kenobi.
Ill just ask everyone these questions. Was the ending of 9 better then the ending of six? was there anything in this trilogy that justifies its creation? what was the aspect that most excited you to see before EP 7? and did the trilogy deliver on that?
Honestly, I don't have any problems with Luke's character in TLJ. I do, however, have a problem with him throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder. I legitimately hate that moment.

I don’t agree with everything you said but I think you did a good job on the video. I liked episode 8 when I first saw it, even though I hated what they did with Luke. But, retrospectively, after seeing the trilogy as a whole, I think the problem is in the pre production of the entire trilogy. There should have been a clear vision of all 3 movies before the first day of production. And instead they decided to wing it!
There were great moments in each film and the first one set it up for a great story arc. But there were fundamental flaws in each move that made them disjointed. And the biggest ones were in the Last Jedi.
Once again, though, I appreciate the alternate views you give compared to my own. Thanks.

Kylo Ren destroyed his mask because he was angry but he kept the mask pieces.
Ren could have had a new mask but its obvious that he wanted to maintain a Vader tradition.
Also, Phasma death was similar to Boba Fett....from a hole. Fans were pissed at that.

I have to disagree with you in the Last Jedi. Some things that were suppose to be explained and needed answers to were completely dropped in the movie. While there was balls, there’s lore to the universe that was completely ignored in what I can only image as an ego driven subversion tactic that the best editing and cinematography in the world couldn’t save. Who was Snoke? Doesn’t matter. Yes it does! How did this almighty powerful force user rise to power and pluck a bloodline student of Luke’s right out from under him? This is a sequel, the OT created rules and a state in the galaxy that needs to be addressed. Same with the inconsistencies in Luke. Yes it’s fine to have him be wise, old and probably thinking the Jedi need to end. All great things to explore along with new force powers. But for him to literally want to kill his own nephew for having a bad dream and then hide away to die while that nephew is kicking his friends asses is no where near inline with his character, the same person who was the only one who saw good in the second most evil person in the entire galaxy in the OT.
And to have Kylo be the only remaining bad guy for the final film leaves little to no stakes for the final film because Rey already kicked his ass in The Force Awakens and there’s nothing extra training he goes through in The Last Jedi since it takes place 3 minutes after the previous movie so it’d be very hard to believe he can best her when she whooped him with no training at all.
Luke didn't want to kill Ben. He had an extremely brief moment of weakness where he considered it, but then thought better. Ben didn't see it that way, though.

@@SeemsLikeSomething Show me don't tell me, is Rule #1 in film. Showing the sabre ignited shows his feeling more than a mere voiceover would. Luke felt afraid enough for a moment to kill someone who is family. Now that is some serious character work and makes Luke exponentially more interesting. Almost as interesting as Kylo's conflict. The dark side's pull never completely goes away. Flaws make characters shine more brightly than dull perfection.
Everyone says it had balls but for me the ballsy move would of been to have Ray turn and join Kylo.

I’ve watched a lot of these sequel critiques, and yours is the only one I agree with almost entirely, in relation to itself as a trilogy, as individual movies, and in relation to the OT and prequels. I’d just add that the Canto Bight jaunt, and Rose for that matter, should have been edited out of TLJ entirely. Great job, succinct and cogent.
That throne room fight among other things really takes me out of it. There was so much potential with the First Order but instead of making them a serious military threat like the Empire they turned them into stereotypical mustache twirling cartoon villains. That first scene in a New Hope where we see Tarkin and all the other high ranking officers was perfect. They felt like a serious military bureaucracy grounded in reality instead we get someone as obnoxious as Hux making hitler type speeches to an already brainwashed army. First Order having planet destroying star destroyers and then countless ships showing up feels like something a child would write.
