Form III - SORESU - Lightsaber Forms Explained (The HELLO THERE form)

- Form III, also known as Soresu, the Way of the Mynock, or the Resilience Form, was the third of the seven classic forms of lightsaber combat that was recognized by the Jedi Council prior to and during the Clone Wars. Soresu was developed during the widespread emergence of blasters as an offensive weapon. Essentially a development on Form I blast-deflect training, Soresu relied on tight bladework and subtle dodges to provide maximum defensive coverage, minimizing exposure to ranged weaponry. Over time, Soresu transcended this basic origin, and came to be considered the ultimate expression of non-aggressive Jedi philosophy.
Like Makashi, Soresu relied on economy of motion and energy efficiency, keeping up constant blade movement to build up momentum and minimize energy expenditure. Form III focused on strong defensive technique to essentially outlast an opponent, waiting until he/she began making mistakes due to frustration or fatigue, before taking advantage of these lapses and countering. Despite its effectiveness, Soresu was heavily criticized for its lack of offensive capabilities, as it facilitated survival rather than victory. As an answer to these weaknesses, the highly aggressive Ataru and Shien forms were developed side by side.

Enjoy todays video! CHANNEL UPDATE! From Feb until MAY this channel will be on a sort of hiatus due to a LOT of life stuff coming up. I will still finish all my videos regarding lightsaber forms and the YODA video which are luckily easy enough for finish in an hour or two, but beyond that all hours of my day will be occupied for a while.
My goal is hopefully for the channel to not turn into a deadzone come May, BUT, if thats the case have no fear because ive been coming up with a new channel for a while. Potential name is Gods of Mortis and for it to be focused primarily around long format videos regarding the FORCE. More of a once a month deep dive video. I will also be active on twitter through this hiatus!

I was wondering what happened to the channel, just saw this. Hope your irl stuff goes well!
This definitely deserves to be called “The Hello There” form
4:05 I love when Obi-Wan switches stances between his classic Form III to Qui-Gon's stance when fighting Darth Maul the final time.
Such a small but important thematic moment for Obi-Wan.
Yeah its so good. He does it to trick Maul into performing what he did to kill Qui Gon, what a legend Obi is.
@@ATATChat that’s why he’s the master of trolling! :)
“Hello there.”
The hello there form indeed!
I mean, he even points to you as his open. HELLO THERE! NOW PERISH.
Hello there!
General Kenobi
Ultimate defense for the most Jedi of Jedi. Bless Obi Wan
Obi-Wan was always known for having really good defenses while Anakin was know for aggressive attacks.
Which is why they were such a good team. The Negotiator and the Hero with No Fear.
This style reminds me of the martial arts technique of "emptying one's mind" in the middle of the fight.
Exactly
Definitely going to be calling this the "Hello There" form from now on 😂
So say we all. Wait, wrong franchise.
@@ATATChat 😂😂😂
@@ATATChat the best Jedi and my favorite Star wars character Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi
How many in the Galaxy can say they beat Darth Maul and Darth Vader ?
Obi-Wan can
Obi Wan is my favourite Jedi
HELL YES
Fun fact: according to the ROTS novelization (which is just... SUCH a good book), it is stated that Obi-Wan Kenobi's defenses are so good that he could handle up to twenty strikes per second.
It is a fitting form, too. Obi-Wan Kenobi is in it for the long haul. He has lasted so long simply because he CAN last so long. Or, as a famous superhero put it, and others have commented: "I can do this all day."
I cant imagine doing anything 20 times in one second. Obi is the GOAT.
Well I guess no more AT AT for another 3 months 😐. That's a bummer
Ill make sure to finish out this series! This is will going to happen.
@@ATATChat well that was a lie!
Love the content
Thanks, Ethan! Means a lot!
The eye of the storm. Could also be called the 'I can do this all day' style.
Form III (Soresu) paired with Captain America's shield? Nothing's getting through that.
Hey these form videos are great!
Yes yoda vid and ataru
Wish you would have made the rest of the videos 😢
Where you at
at
Will u split Djem So and the dual wield cant remember name
And
Form 7 and vaapad
Those will probably just be extended. Just talking the variant itself shouldn't take up TOO much time. Maybe 2-3 minutes dedicated to it.
If i remember right
Fisto
Dooku
Obi Wan
Yoda
Anakin/Ventress
Syn Dralleg
Big Palpy/Windu
This form is extremely fitting. Obi-Wan's resilience is his greatest strenght, he has been through more pain and heartbreak than pretty much any character in the franchise, yet despite he has never been tempted by the dark side, not even for a moment.
Keep em coming! Love these
Hello There
General Kenobi?
@@ATATChat Man I love the Star Wars Community
This is really cool. I always thought this form was legit. But common, it's obiwan Kenobi.
I can only find the first 3 did he give up or delete them ? Or am i blind ?
The virgin djem so vs the chad soresu
lmfaoooooo. I want to title a video this.
@@ATATChat would be beautiful
So we finna get another video about forms
It's a really fascinating lightsaber form. Just the amount of thinking and focus that's needed while using that style makes it awesome.
4:20 looks like the katana forms 'Te Ura Gasumi' (or should it be 'Ko Gasumi'?), and at 3:43 the 'Tachi No Tori', but held by an amateur 🤭
At 4:04 would be Hasso No Kamae (not so wrong, but still an amateur hold tho 😅)
Just looked those up! You are right. Its wild that Star Wars "Forms" are adaptations of whats exists, but then again, it makes sense.
What better way to embody the calm in the storm than casually saying "Hello there" while you put yourself bang in the middle of enemy territory against the fury of the Jedi killer?
Such a good way to calm
Activate the Subtitule plis
Well that explains the Panaka tweet 🤣🤣🤣
HAHA yep!
I think form 3 would be my main form
Seems like the best form for a JEDI and peacemaker. I dig its idea of the calm of the storm.
Great video, glad I found this channel today
Thanks!
@@ATATChat just getting part 3 looking forward to your videos
Gaming
The best offense is a good defense while standing upon… the HIGH GROUND
Why hasn’t a Jedi, or sith, used the force to turn off an opponent’s lightsaber during a duel? Good timing on that and it’s all game over
Great question. I shall ponder this.
Because it's risky. Although, I think there's one sith who did this in the Legends.
Very few force wielders can do thAt, Yoda is the only seen to be Powerful enough to disarm with the force. I can imagine vader did it in the jedi temple since he was basically fighting fodder jedi/padawans
Lol, "Wow, that was dark... Anyway, thanks for watching!"
Blaster deflection is form 3 soresu. Blaster reflection is form 5 Shien.
Could you please do a break down on anakin vs obi wan and see who would win if there was no high ground and no other geographical advantages and say they were just in an open field
When you do the form 5 video are you gonna make a video on both variants of form v and are you gonna do a video on vapaad
I think Luke used Soresu
I think a combo of that and form 5.
@@ATATChat oh right ok cool
Obisu... The short hand, civilized form of Obi-Wan Kenobi
yes, this is canon
Now, the big question: Will Form 4 focus on Yoda or Luke?
Why not both!
This is my form.
Zannah?
@@ATATChat ?
You should cover all the forms!
The brace form is used in Ataru tho because qui-gon uses that form in the phantom menace
I think it depends. According to the essential guide to the Force, Jedi Path, and the SW Insider Mag, they all had this information. My guess is perhaps 1999 was still before they confirmed what style was what. I believe it wasnt until AOTC that anything was made official.
Form 3 is my favorite form.
I would love to see two masters of Soresu just go at it. It would make for a great what if.
Do you mean Soresu?
@@FallenOne669 Got it, thanks 😅
@@molliethomas2585 Damn you, AutoCorrect!✊

@@molliethomas2585 I don't have a story at the moment but I am working on a small project involving pictures where I put pictures of or images of the location of where certain novels have taken place and have Ben and Rey visit them while looking for pictures of Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley such as visiting the Orchard House, the house of Little Women in Concord, the Gatsby mansion in Long Island New York, Anne Gables Foster parents home, and then they spend a week in the countryside of England for Jane Austen attractions
In simple words, Form 3 is Defense. Obi Wan is not a master , but THE MASTER of perfect DEFENSE.
