Could NOT agree more whole-heartedly! I was watching a couple vids of "greatest male vocalists", and NONE of them had David Gates OR Brad Delp from Boston.
Everything about this guy and Bread was something very special. Their music is so sophisticated that very few bands could compare to them. Their music is so intricate, yet they make it sound so simple. They were the best.
David Gates is an amazing singer and writer!!! Never really got the recognition he deserved.Just to let you know david i really thought all you songs were great and you are so talented !!! Thank you for your beautiful music!!!! \
Agreed if they haven't already. The man is in his 80s and we hope he and his group Bread get inducted while most of them are still with us and wish them all well!
Listening to this song in 2024. Grew up with this talented band in the 70s. David Gates was one of the best singers back then. I'm 66 years old now 🎵🎶🎸🎹
My late husband was in the Navy in the 70s when we met, this was our song everything he had to leave, brings back memories of then. Great singer and song writer.
Thanks for sharing, I was only 4 when this song came out but I love hearing folks share their experiences and stories about how these certain songs affected them and their experiences
One of the greatest singer songwriters from the seventies you will never hear music this good again. All the great songs have already been written sorry for all the new performers
David's voice, you can feel his soul in all his songs. Loved the movie, saw it multiple times.I loved The group. growing up I would listen to the greatest hits on my portable player.Still have the album.God🙏Bless you and your wife/family.My husband & I are highschool sweet hearts. We were 16 Now 61 , 45 years together ,grew up listening to the songs ,all have special meaning for us They don't make music like they used too. Sooo glad we grew up in the 70's
The movie was the story of my life with my mom at the time. I watch it every time it's on and it brings back such bittersweet memories. This song always brings me to tears.
At the beginning of this song I always feeling like taking a deep breath, relaxing, closing my eyes and going back to the 70's at the rollerskating at the rink.
Simply beautiful !!!!! this guy pours his heart in every word he sings, excuse my english it´s no the best and trying to express my feelings is even harder,I am from colombia ,never had been abroad but i grew up listening to this amazing music that has taken me to many places ,to many special moments ,to smile remembering those women who loved me i loved back, those friends who for a long period of my childhood and adolescence were family to me, every song brings back different moments of my life and when that happens ,some of them make me happy and some others make me sad and nostalgic ,but that is life and music has helped me at the age I´m now to get by,I Would love to take it with me to eternity where I Hope to reunite with my loved ones and friends that have already departed,I Thank music for being my eternal good and faithfull companion
I was 16 and my first love ran away from Pennsylvania to Florida to live with her father. She told me that night, kissed me, and she was gone. Driving to school the next morning I heard this song, pulled over and cried.....hard. Still hurts to hear this song and I'm now 63.
David Gates solo is a pleasure. Gates and James Griffin together equals magic. Especially when you bring in drummer extraordinaire Mike Botts and the musical excellence of Larry Knechtel! Bread remain the finest Soft Rock band ever yet their rocking more uptempo material is criminally underrated.
@@jlockwood65 Like EVERY single Uptempo,"raunchy" Bread song, because they're unfamiliar to the public. Unless you bought the albums and actually listened to to them, youd think Bread was only this bland ballad type band when in fact they had just as many rockers as ballads! LOVE Three Dog Night, by the way!
A greater golden singer with bread, classic music that will never come back to our generations. I was 14 years old a gift that God gave it to me, this great singer and bread musical band.
Grew up listening to Bread, the Carpenters and other great 70's bands, and had the pleasure of meeting David Gates [he lived next door to some friends of ours in Hidden Hills, CA]. Tremendous singer, will never be anyone like him....
Great song. Ol the memories of the 70s. Transport me back to 1978. I had been out of the Marine Corps 5 months, when this aired. I let my hair grow, and a different date every weekend.
Are you still alive today sir 😊 well, just wanted to say hello to you after reading your comments here. Actually, this is my first time knowing this song, one friend sends to me this few days ago, am still can't believe there's this such incredible very warmth so much dedicated song, it's like am living in another world, world of fantacy where everything are so much loved 💞💞💞💝💜💙💚💛⚘🌸🌷🌻🌺🌹🌿

Years will pass and times will change . But Quality Beautiful Timeless music that is well written and crafted like this and could be transported back 100 years in the past and be liked or transported 100 years in the future and liked. That is the definition of a timeless classic like this song by David Gates.
The 20 track The Sound Of Bread compilation may be the finest collection ever released. All the David Gates written hits are to be found, some superb Griffin/Royer songs and a few selected album tracks.

Greatest songs i was 17 yearls old when this great golden singer came around. He belonged to a great group, bread. A gift from God. Thank you David Gate.
True. Every sound, instrument & Nuance exactly as the Studio Recording. At first I wondered if he was singing LIVE to a Studio backing track, but everything was exactly like it. Not even the finest performers are THAT exact in every detail?
I was just thinking of my favourite band "Bread" yesterday. Somehow this song came to my mind and then I started to tear up. Brings back such wonderful memories of the 80s.
OK, So here is the deal with David Gates and Bread: As good as this music is, when they were popular in the 70s, if you were a guy in your teens, 20s, even 30s, you'd get laughed at and called names (politically incorrect ones) if you admitted to liking Bread and/or Soft Rock in general. It just wasn't considered manly, as stupid as that is. But, I have no doubt there were many guys like myself who liked it anyway, although we just didn't admit it. And being able to appreciate it more now, they were musical geniuses. The songwriting, the guitar playing was fantastic and David's singing of course. Before music videos, MTV and VH1, they were played on the radio ALL THE TIME, which indicates how good they were, whether people wanted to admit it at the time or not.
my papa tells me whenever i sing this song, he said its like the real one who sings this, lives in me, or more likely its my own voice that is almost same as his ❤
Still. Listening in 2023. The voice.. So special.. No. One can sing like him.. ❤

Beautiful voice, beautiful song, and one heck of a movie! Thanks!

His band should be in the r&r hall of fame

Hall of shame they rather have rappers or madonna the likes
I love David Gates and Bread. My husband would heartily disagree. LOL 😆 🤣. I force him to listen to Bread.

Still an awesome hit single after so many years!

70’s love songs had a big part in who I am as a person. It connected me to my Soul and grounded me there.
No one who sings love Ballads comes close to this man. He gets me crying every time
Exactly and I'm a 50 year old woman. Have loved this song since I was very young. Mom and Dad played it constantly....
I remember when this came out, I was 19 years old. I felt like I was the Good Bye Girl. Loved Bread!
I would say Karen Carpenter.....

For those who want to sing along
All your life you've waited for love to
Come and stay
And now that I have found you, you must
Not slip away
I know it's hard believin' the words you've
Heard before
But darlin' you must trust them just once
More, 'cause baby
Goodbye doesn't mean forever
Let me tell you goodbye doesn't mean
We'll never be together again
If you wake up and I'm not there, I won't
Be long away
'Cause the things you do my Goodbye Girl
Will bring me back to you.
I know you've been taken, afraid to hurt
Again
You fight the love you feel for me instead
Of givin' in
But I can wait forever, a-helpin' you to see
That I was meant for you and you for me so remember
Goodbye doesn't mean forever
Let me tell you goodbye doesn't mean
We'll never be together again
Though we may be so far apart you still
Will have my heart
So forget your past my Goodbye Girl
'Cause now you're home at last
