What a great talent. Retired too soon but I hope he is enjoying life for he gave us such great music as fresh today as it was 50 years ago. Never get tired of it.
Every single song David Gates ever composed/sang just moves smoothly throughout one's circulatory system. He is definitely one of music's heavyweights.
David Gates voice has never changed, and it seems strange seeing him as an older man still sounding like he did when he was in his twenties! Im not complaning one bit, the man is a legend.
W8TN4IT I love this song! It was playing when I met my husband. Although we are no longer together I still love this this song and it reminds me of the good times we had!
Just shows what talent is still got a great voice years on not like today dont write songs like this anymore David wrote some great classics songs those days of gone now 👍
Simply one of THE most prolific song writer/singers of this or any generation. David Gates' falsetto is among the best I've ever heard, comparable to the might Bee Gee's themselves. Though very different styles, the sound which Bread and Mr. Gates has given us, has stood the test of time! Few albums sold as well as this classic soft rock band did! Mr Gates has been inspiration to me, and to my generation for sure. For all those who listen hereafter, why on Country stage? Why in a country format? Because he was the essence of country before country knew what it was. A story teller, a lyrisist a musician and more. Melodies, harmony and a sound never before, or after heard. Bread rivaled such blazing stars as the Carpenters, Ambrosia and ballad driven bands of that era. This sound is pure...for a reason!
Watch the Gates/Campbell medley, when Gates starts vocally there is a "WOW"! expression on Campbell's face- he fights it, but, GC knew he had the real deal with him that night. GC's falsetto is one with Gate's . Two massive talents together for a few minutes.
Happy Birthday David! Wow, 77 years old today! Thank You for what I'd call, some of the most romantic, heart felt songs to ever be written and performed that sounds this beautiful! I had the Best of Bread album, and played it so much throughout time, that I wore it out!
It's often commented that David Gates is "so underrated as a singer-songwriter." While this may well be true for others, he remains my all-time favorite.
Robert , you get it, you really, really get it! ( I was channeling Sally Field there! ) That's what made the seventies so precious it was the songwriters that made all the difference they that really spoke to you! For the first time men were not railing against something but, well surrendering to their better emotions. And it was a beautiful world as a result. Generation Jones had the cream of the crop, I tell you!
Always loved David Gates songs, there is nothing wrong with being soft hearted , love him, especially his love songs, and Last Train, love them all. the best. fan in Kalamazoo *
Yes I agree David Gates Is one of the most unique singers song writer's of the sixties and seventies never will their be another one like him .I met David In San Diego California It was a Pleasure meeting him. talking to him A very nice man. My favorite song is ( IF) and the song he wrote about the passing of his Father Clarence Gates.( Everything I own). A very touching song. Take care David your friend Rick Peak Drummer of the Band The Young Youths.
These are two very special songs that helped landmark loving memories in my life from almost 50 years ago. Sadly, those involved in the making of those memories with me are no longer here yet, those feelings remain just as strong.😔
One of my favorite bands and a all time classics! Great love songs and the gentle side of light rock country and your mom would like it too. These guys good with words and nice to hear soft music too. Awesome voice and harmony.
Around 1981 I met a girl at one of the local clubs in West Phoenix. Since I lived in the barracks at Luke AFB, we went back to her apartment. She went to fix us a couple drinks and I went to the stereo to put on some music. i flipped up the dust cover on the turntable and Bread's Greatest Hits was there. So I started it up, set the needle down, and got busy!
Spent the past 3 days doing a deep dive into Bread, and especially David Gates. Although I always liked this music as part of my youth (I was born in 1962), I appreciate it now more than ever.
Love David Gates and Bread. Neat that Billy Dean is on stage with him. My brother recorded some of his earliest demo pieces, out of Tallahassee, FL ... in fact, this photo of me, is at the console in that same studio ...
I was shocked to hear that David is the only surviving member of Bread. Sad. What music they made. David, please go on the road so I may get tickets and listen to your wonderful ballads.
Guitar Man literally was my anthem when it first hit the air waves. I was an 18 year old kid with dreams of rocking away the rest of my life but then I met my precious Teri. Career, family, military and love of the change in my life’s direction took over and by the mid ‘80s my new anthem became Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive as I wistfully recalled my earlier dreams and allowed my V-twin to become my steel horse and my guitars to take a significantly less important part of my life. Now at 64, I still smile as I listen to Guitar Man while holding my Teri’s hand through the rest of our lives together. She’s so much more precious than any stage I could have hoped to stand on!
Carlos Vargas I was rough and tough Infantry United States Marine in the early 70s. I listened to David Gates & Bread in the barracks all the time. Semper Fi.
Carlos Vargas IT was the same for me when I was growing up, the other people in my crowd made fun of me to, but I didn't care, because these songs made me feel better.
His voice is still wonderful. Pure talent. Thank you David for the beautiful songs.
What a great talent. Retired too soon but I hope he is enjoying life for he gave us such great music as fresh today as it was 50 years ago. Never get tired of it.
You do have a way with words and you are so right.
Every single song David Gates ever composed/sang just moves smoothly throughout one's circulatory system. He is definitely one of music's heavyweights.
Another reason why the 70's were the best decade ever...
Unforgettable voice of the 70's with Mr. David Gates
One of the most under-appreciated singer-composers ever .
For me, the 70s is the best decade when it comes to music! Best artist/singers too.
David Gates voice has never changed, and it seems strange seeing him as an older man still sounding like he did when he was in his twenties! Im not complaning one bit, the man is a legend.
A poignant song with simple lyrics and the unforgettable voice of David Gates.
Wow...i was just 19 years old but this song touch my heart...its worthy of praise
Bread was such an underrated group of the 70s. Guitar Man and If were my two favorites
I wish they would still make music like this... I miss the 70's.
70's is the BEST EVER Music.
W8TN4IT I love this song! It was playing when I met my husband. Although we are no longer together I still love this this song and it reminds me of the good times we had!

I agree. Brings back the good ole days and music
Just shows what talent is still got a great voice years on not like today dont write songs like this anymore David wrote some great classics songs those days of gone now 👍
I really miss the 70s. I want to go back and stay. Thanks David Gates for being there, to take us into the 70s and through the 70s.
Roxie, I say the same thing, I'd love to go back in time and relive those great times
The best music was the 50s, 60s and 70s, IMO.
USMC 73-77 My friend, I say that all the time. There seemed to be much less discord and hate in the 70’s and the music reflected that.
USMC 73-77,
I really agree with you.
@@robertwaldecker7209 I'd go back to the 70s and even repeat my 4 yrs in the United States Marine Corps.
An incredible composer, performer and artist. My era was so special because of the quality of music such as this

Once again , David was able to archive what only few men's can archive not only musically but after music in personal life
Bread was a great band. Way under rated.
Man Bread was my favorite group in 1970. Saw them live. David Gates still sounds like he did 40 years ago. Awesome!

DG was older than most his peers back then- He has to be at least 75-80
It's often commented that David Gates is "so underrated as a singer-songwriter." While this may well be true for others, he remains my all-time favorite.
“Guitar Man” is so underrated. It’s brilliant.
Meu Deus essa música Guitar Man mexe com o meu coração me lembro muito da minha adolecensa
One of the most endearing (and enduring) song writers to come out of the most lyrically meaningful decade in popular music.

Robert Henry Love Bread, David Gates. Superb lyricist
So true

Gates voice is pure gold, his music sublime, lyrics- poetic brilliance. The best music created by Bread.
So much love for Davids beautiful voice. I don’t think anyone can make me tear up quicker than Everything I Own.
RIP Jimmy Griffin, Larry Knetchel and Mike Botts Thank you for the most beautiful music....
wow I never heard that Jimmy Griffin and Mike Botts passed too, this is news to me. They are surely missed and also Larry Knetchel whoa
