    SpinRash Great questions! We use IGI 134 It has a melt point of 160 and pour temp of 190-200. Provides a great shine finish- but since it is not pre-blended it also allows you to play with that be introducing additives. Wick is the engine of the candle which in my opinion makes it really important. For a pillar candle I use square braid wicking to produce a nice full flame. They are sold in diameter ranges for the candle- make sure to get the right size for your molds. We carry 2 sizes.

      +Hunky Dory Thanks for responding, i love your molds and all various chunks with colors. Am still fuzzy on adding alcohol, can you give an example of alcohol your talking about, there is rubbing alcohol, alcohol you can drink and what candle supplier offer alcohol to mix in wax. Thanks

    When you bring a liquid to a solid it shrinks...so the candle looses volume as it cools...so yes it just slides out once you cut the wick and remove the screw from the bottom. This is especially true if you make scented candles. If you make unscented candles I have had a FEW over the years stick to the side while cooling which ruins the finish- but they still come out- in those cases I always use the cooling bath to prevent the stick. I get my molds from North Valley Candle Molds- love them!

    I always set a timer. Cool time will vary depending on how hot you pour your wax and the temp in the room and how large your tray is...but once you get the time right- it works like a charm. My chunks usually take about 40 minutes.

    What was the thing you are applying to the candle for finishing? The one that I just saw at the end of your video to make it more glossy? I really like the video, it inspires me. Thanks! Hope that you'll upload more videos and the materials you are using, because I would like to start doing this as a hobby. Thanks a lot!

      Check candle Part 2 material List- I go over all the items you need to get started. And also Part 3 the equipment list. Both great segments for beginners that are looking at how to get started and what to invest in. The tool I was using to make the candle glossy was a skillet- found at any big box retailer for under $20- normally used to make pancakes and bacon. So look in the section that sells toasters and coffee makers. The key to using the skillet is a 200 degree setting/ and getting your swipe right on the paper towel. It takes some practice. It is speed from skillet to paper towel and pressure on the paper towel balance.

    Hi, Fantastic Video, what are you doing in the video when you say 'finishing' please?

    • @everythinghunkydory
      @everythinghunkydory 9 років тому

      Sharon Hunt you build most candles upside down. So the bottom of the candle/top of the mold is not even/flat. We use a skillet to melt the wax off the bottom so the candle sits perfectly flat. That is important to prevent a candle from leaking wax.

  • @LaurensLollipops
    @LaurensLollipops  11 років тому

    Thank you so much. Yes we quickly melt off a small layer of the wax to reveal more of the colored chunks and color. Good luck- you can get most of your supplies at the good will-

  • @LaurensLollipops
    @LaurensLollipops  11 років тому

    To the side of my skillet is a a couple of layers of newspaper- to have a somewhat soft surface then I begin with one piece of paper towel. Once I have wiped and it has absorbed as much wax as it can I flip it and use both sides. When that side is filled I put another piece on top. Stacking the paper towel- works the best until a point...then you have to start over.

    Yes they are cookie sheets most of my supplies you can get at restaurant supplies stores or hardware stores- which will be cheaper then craft stores. The chunks can be made ahead of time and keep forever! They should be made unscented so you can use them with any candle. Good luck and come back if you anymore questions.

    Why doesn't the hot wax melt and blur the edges of the chunks? Are the chunks a higher temperature wax?

    • @LaurensLollipops
      @LaurensLollipops  5 років тому +2

      Both wax is the same. The only difference being scent in the white pour over wax and color in the chunks. They have the same melt point. If you pour the wax within temp it will start cooling immediately and not be able to reach a melt point in the mold/container. If you raise the temp of the pour over wax you can get color bleed. I love to do this with red chunks and white pour over for valentines day.

    sorry I have been on vacation. You finish the candles on a skillet. That easiest way...you can see me do this in my later lessons. IF you don't have a skillet you can also warm a cookie sheet in the oven and then take it out and finish- but this is a more time consuming and tidiest process.

    Loved the video. I'm going to start making candles but watching all videos I can to gain knowledge. When you say you are building chunk candles upside down, so the top is actually the bottom, I'm not understanding how to place the wick so when you take the candle out of the mold the wick will be at the top of the candle. Can you please explain? Thank you.

    • @everythinghunkydory
      @everythinghunkydory 9 років тому +2

      Dispense Spencer Hope you have your answer already but just in case. There is a small hole in the bottom of premade molds that allow you to thread the wick through- securing with small screw and if needed some plumbers putty

    If the color ran there are 2 options- the color dye you are using is low quality? Or the wax you poured over the chunks was too hot. I use a pillar paraffin that has a melt point of 140 but should be poured at around 185/190 for the best finish. Bringing the temp of the wax over 200 will pull the color from the chunks, burn off the fragrance you add diluting the intensity and in some cases leave a finish with tiny bubbles under the surface if the wax was hot enough.

  • @QuincysBoo09
    @QuincysBoo09 10 років тому +1

    Can you mix soy wax with paraffin wax, if so what would be the melt point and the pour point. I was told the both together holds in the scent stay in the candle to the end, and makes the candle burn better. Is this true!!!!
    Thanks
    Tracey

    • @everythinghunkydory
      @everythinghunkydory 10 років тому

      you can mix- blending wax is one of my favorite things to do- but it requires a little trial and error to get the right balance. If your goal is a pillar I would start with 30% soy and 70% paraffin and I would pour the wax at the paraffin temp or ten degrees lower. Start there and depending on finish, feel and effect start to play to get the results you WANT! Recommend keeping notes on what you are doing do you can recreate. Good luck!

    • @QuincysBoo09
      @QuincysBoo09 10 років тому

      Thanks a bunch. I was curious on how hot I should let them get since I was mixing both waxes together. I firmly believe mixing them together, I think it holds in the color and fragrance better.. But still struggling on container candles getting a cave hole near the wick. Whether or not mixing waxes most of the time I get 1 cave whole near the wick, Does that mean I am doing something wrong or something.. Should I wait till it cools completely before the second pour or half cooled or does it matter.. My loaf-petite tart bars and regular tarts don't do that, just in the jar candles.. I tried pouring slower, letting wax cool more before I pour but haven't mastered it yet.. LOL.. Any ideas would be appreciated..

    • @everythinghunkydory
      @everythinghunkydory 10 років тому

      Tracey Lockhart You are getting the cave at the top because of the natural chemistry of the turning a liquid into a solid; you loose volume. It is best to wait until the wax is cooled completely before you fill this void or it will just keep happening. I think I go over this in single pour and layered candles. Your punch then and then do a over pour at the end. Same principle here.

    Juls- I just uploaded a few more videos that might answer your questions. Material list- Gel Candles are usually made in containers. The chunk candles I was working on are paraffin and use metal reusable candle molds that have a hole in the base to thread the wick thru. You can find them at general craft stores like Michael's I buy mine from North Valley Candle Company- they supply everyone else but have min orders.

    wax is very important. I use all kind of wax soy, paraffin, beeswax, etc- in these videos I am using paraffin pillar wax- with a melt point of 165. I try to find unblended wax that does not have additives- so I can get different results. Try to find a supplier close to home - shipping will add to the cost. Start at craft stores and go from there. Let me know if you need more info.

      pitu maciel yes more chunks will help. But also be specific and get your chunks in patterns flat against the wall of the mold. Anything not touching metal will be lost to the paraffin. You might still see some chunk color when you have the candle lit and glowing.

    Dear m making candle but it's look very dull .What Can I do to make it shiny like shop candles

    • @LaurensLollipops
      @LaurensLollipops  5 років тому

      Not knowing many details it is difficult to know exactly why your candles are dull. A few of the things that could cause that problem- pouring wax at a low temp. My wax melts at 140 and I pour at 190-200. This gives me a shine. The other reason could be wax quality....or type. Both Palm wax and soy wax have a duller finish and need additive to increase shine.

    I get my wax in pallet, by the ton. You most likely will not need that much. So looking at local craft stores will be the best bet, because wax is heavy and the weight will add money on to the shipping. Make sure you look for pure 139 melt point wax with no additives if you can find it.

    • @LaurensLollipops
      @LaurensLollipops  5 років тому

      The situation you described is caused by one of two things. The wick you used was not large enough. When you purchase wick it comes in sizes- you want it to burn the diameter of your candle. If you can confirm you used the correct wick size for the diameter of the candle then you are under burning- when you light a candle it should be burned long enough to create a liquid well to the edge of the candle or in the case of a container the complete top of the container.

But yes candles should be wax, color and scent. melt, stir and pour. Temp is the tricky part. So make sure to get your wax to it's proper temp.

  • @LaurensLollipops
    @LaurensLollipops  11 років тому

    Wax should never be placer directly on a burner- it has a flash fire point of just over 400...meaning it can catch fire on the stove. ALWAYS- heat indirectly- either with a wax melter, water bath or as you mention a crock pot. If you plan to work it in as business- I would get a melter from CES- they are worth every penny. You can see me using one in the video- they last FOREVER and keep their value so you can resell if you change your mind.

      For pillars I use IGI 1239, it is a general all purpose wax. It is possible to purchase wax that is pre-blended for specific uses like votives, containers, etc. It adds a level of complication but I like to blend my own wax...meaning I will use additives to alter the wax to perform better in different situations.
